Rookie Year (Take Two) For Kyle Trask?

“Kyle, coaches talking isn’t always a good thing. It wasn’t like that in New England.”
Count this as the second comment from a Bucs coach this year on Kyle Trask that raises an eyebrow.
“You know, this is Kyle’s really first year learning the offense,” head coach Todd Bowles told WDAE radio after practice today. “He saw it last year, but he didn’t get a lot of reps. This year he’s getting a lot of reps and he’s very decisive where to go with the football. Obviously, he has some things to learn. It’s tough to play against a bunch of coverages in practice in the first time, being our defense. But he’s making all the right decisions. He’s commanding the offense and we just look for him to grow.”
Joe nearly drove off Dale Mabry Highway when Bowles starting by saying this is really more of a Year 1 situation for Trask. Odd choice of words.
This whole notion of reps for Trask has intrigued Joe for a long time, ever since quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen said in May that Trask wasn’t really competing for the No. 2 QB job and 2022 would be another “learning year” for the Bucs’ 2021 second-round pick.
The Bucs could have gotten Trask plenty of spring and training camp reps last season but chose not to. And they even spent more time on multiple fields. Trask also is in one of the great NFL quarterback incubators in history, surrounded by Tom Brady, Byron Leftwich, Tom Moore, Christensen and Bucco Bruce Arians.
Joe is very eager to see Trask on Saturday night against the Dolphins after he’s had a very inconsistent training camp. In last year’s preseason opener, Trask was 4-for-15 for 35 yards with two sacks.

I can’t remember which preseason game it was last year (though according to those stats, definitely not the opener) but in one game Trask followed Ryan Griffin and looked WAY better than him. Griff looked awful, and Trask actually led them to a TD.
I know that and $4 gets you a cup of coffee at Starbucks, but honestly I’m still going to believe Trask has the chance to be an effective NFL QB until my eyeballs tell me otherwise.

The silver lining is he’s decisive and making the right decisions. He just need to know what type of passes he can and can’t throw in the heat of the moment. It’s encouraging to know this. Reading and studying is one thing. Applying the knowledge is a whole different animal. He just need more experience.

So I guess it’s either the coaches didn’t want to spend time with Trask? Maybe because it was an all in season last year? Or Trask is such a project that none of the coaches want to take him under thier wing? It’s a mystery to us fans. I have to be honest. This team doesn’t have a good track record developing Qb’s. They have a better track record of Qb’s leaving to play for another team and being successful.

Because he is a high second round pick I hope he turns out to be the QB of the future.

Trask will be just fine. They say he was better than every aQB who came out this year. What he did versus SEC competition was phenomenal

I thought Trask looked decent last preseason surrounded by future beer truck and UPS drivers, against the same.
I want him to get a LOT of work this preseason.

This isn’t news. He didn’t get a lot of quality reps last year. He was taking a redshirt year to work on mechanics, velocity, and mobility. So, yeah, in terms of practicing with the intention of getting ready to play, this is year 1. I see what Bowles means.

I still wonder about his position coach, Christensen. His first time here he was almost run out of town on a rail.
A couple years later he comes back, Arians says he is great, and we believe.
The he throws Trask under the bus.
I about fell off my chair when I heard that Christensen quote back in May.
Trask deserves better than that, as does every other professional athlete. It makes me wonder if Trask is being brought along properly.
I have hope for Trask on Saturday and can’t wait to see it.

He is not good from what I have seen. I would love for him to be a great NFL QB one day, but I highly doubt it will happen.

Bucs have a history of not developing QBs Williams, Young, Testerverde, Dilfer, Winston and probably Trask. Lets hope not.

You got to be kidding,
1st year, 2ed round qb in street close with no reps.
2ed year, getting some reps with third and fourth stringers without even competing for a back up position as qb coach stated earlier this year prior to the training camp.
Why did they even drafted him to waste him and the second round pick.
I am not sure how did Kyle play last season games without any reps.

This is not news and Bowles is exactly right – this is Trask’s de facto first year. The other day I was going to write that same thing here in response to Joe’s asinine statement that Trask “is in his second year with the same offense.” It’s his first year, having been sidelined his entire rookie year.

When the ball is right in his throwing hand and he tries to throw it, but loses it, because I dont know, he forgot to keep the grip on it until time to release (i distinctively remember him doing that last preseason)….then Tampa, we have a problem!!! What it is, I dont know….Im pulling for the kid but we might have to move on. He looked good in college…dont know what happened.

PassingThru … Just as an aside, Miami impressed me in the 2nd half of last season. Won their 1st 2021 game, but then lost 7 in a row before turned it around … with defense. Won 8 out of their last 9 to finish 9-8 (but missed the playoffs). Tua got most of those wins & did excellent, well until the Titans whooped them 38-3 by running the ball down their throats (40 times for 198 yds). Still, Miami could be a team to watch out for this year in the AFC.

The Gators have had no NFL QBs with any success. I think Grossman made a SB, but almost all historically didn’t do much. Trask is nothing more than practice squad project, waste of a draft pick. Get RG4 in there….

JB … Trask MIGHT be the one exception’ you never know. I sometimes wonder if certain QBs could turn out to be successful but in a different system. It may be that this particular offensive system just doesn’t play to Trask’s strengths. The old ‘square peg in a round hole’ trick? He obviously had some positives at UF.

Trask could one up him when he steps in to fill Bradys shoes. I know the reports arent great on Trask but hes got BA whispering to him and Im betting them mistakes at practice are just part of the whispering process.

So we have a joint practice with the Fins, and Joe can only obsess over our 2nd year third string QB. Bucs said last year they were only asking Trask to work on his body, and footwork. Yet fans, and Joe think he should be over taking Gabbert after the first week of his second training camp. Amazing. Don’t know if Trask will ever be an NFL starter, or even a back up. Don’t even care much, because when Brady does leave, I’m sure Licht will find somebody. Let the kid play out the preseason Joe before working up the peasants to light the torches, and go after the monster. Give the kid a break.

The guy was a life long backup who took a hold of an opportunity and delivered. He saved that Charlatan’s Fanny on Gville. And a year after he was gone, the jig was up.
When called upon by this team, he will deliver.

Don’t you think it is telling if a second-round pick of a quarterback is regressing in his second training camp? Most second round picks at quarterback are at least competing for the backup gig. You are OK with this? (The head coach spoke about this on a blowtorch radio station. Joe is supposed to ignore that as well? What else should Joe ignore, dudes getting carted off the field in practice?)
Why? If he is that feeble that folks are not allowed to honestly critique him, maybe he shouldn’t have been drafted? The NFL is not good ol’ college try or puppy love high school. Dudes are drafted to produce, or else. The Bucs could have instead drafted a cornerback last year which the team sorely could have used. That bit them in the arse in the end. But hey, the Bucs drafted a quarterback who never dressed for a game (the only quarterback drafted who never took a snap last year). All good, right?

False. Grossman took the Bears to the Super Bowl. Only 30 or so NFL quarterbacks have done that. That’s an elite club. Others, like Spurrier, had lengthy NFL careers.
Aside from you being wrong, by your logic Brett Favre should never have been given a second year because he came from Southern Miss, which has produced virtually no NFL quarterbacks other than Favre.
NFL managers don’t think like you, for obvious reasons.

I’m not even concerned about a stretch of bad practices. How many picks did Jay-Miss throw in practices?
I’m not a Trask supporter or basher. I am patient because he doesn’t have to play, and he has another year to become a pro-caliber QB. We’ll see. Of course it would be great if we had reports that he was just tearing it up, but I’m not gonna worry. If we have to draft another QB, so be it.

Shaun King didn’t “lead” the Bucs anywhere – that 1999 Bucs defense was one of the best Defenses in NFL history…
Ditto for Dilfer’s Super Bowl win with the Ravens – exact same situation
Same goes for Rex Grossman. Bears had a very good defense that year and Grossman was just along for the ride….

Lots of fans act like some QBs are total mysteries if they havent yet played an NFL game…..for example, Kellen Mond, backup for the Vikings has never played in an NFL game, do people pretend like Mond is going to be a superstar QB if he actually sees the field? No.
Sometimes the writings on the wall, if guys arent impressing in camp thats usually a telling sign. Trask has not yet shown any sign that hes the future of this franchise.

King made a few plays over the season, especially the pass to John Davis the 8th string TE, but Dilfer would have won the Rams playoff game had he started. King got fat and lazy in his head and in his body. Dilfder got his hat handed to him that season, and say what you want, he won the following year with a similar team. Dilfder would have scored more than 5 points
And King just kept eating. Herm Edwards said all of us ever needed to hear when talking about Chad Pennington. Much preferred Chad over the distracted lazy King.
King was basically Freeman without the physical gifts.

Joe I think you clearly outline the greater problem, LEADERSHIP/COACHES. I am not a Trask fan, but let’s examine the situation. That “incubator” (and GM) evaluated Trask, used a 2nd rd pick on him, can’t seem to “find” reps for him, and are unable to get their choice up to speed in 2 yrs. Craig pointed out astutely that Clyde is a Muppet with a hand up his a$$ riding along. He hasn’t coached a single buc qb in the past or present, and has got to be the luckiest man alive with BA as his benafactor and Peyton, Luck, and Brady as cash cows to overshadow his ineptness. Trask is Trask, he hasn’t changed imo… coaches should have seen and known

As most have said I hope Trask can be a QB1 at some point but I doubt it based on what we see and read. And to think they used a valuable 2nd rd pick for him really irks me. It looked like a bad pick then and it looks like a bad pick now.

Wow, one day after Trask had a stellar practice passing and Joe and the Haters can’t control their hatred for the guy. Why? I know why. I’ll answer it this way: If we had drafted Justin Fields (who stunk it up for Chicago last season by the way) instead of Trask, Joe and the Haters would be complaining about Fields not playing and how that affects his training camp and how we need to give him a chance. You all know it’s true.
