Another Cornerbacks Top-10 List, Another Carlton Davis Absence
August 10th, 2022Joe’s writing this, in part, because of how Bucs defensive backs were all jacked up when NFL Network preseason-ranked the Tampa Bay starting cornerbacks duo as the worst in the league before the 2020 season.
The defensive backs all saw it and were talking about it — even after winning the Super Bowl.
These days, most Bucs fans puff out their chests when they talk about cornerback Carlton Davis and how he’s a top-10 corner in the NFL. Davis talks a big-game, too, and he yearns and burns to be elite.
However, over and over Joe sees cornerback rankings from knowledgeable analysts and Davis does not appear. Retired quarterback David Carr just released a top-11 breakdown and there’s no sign of Davis. Marlon Humphrey of the Ravens is his No. 10 just ahead of hated Saints corner Marshon Lattimore.
Maybe Davis will see this and pick up some extra fire to his game?
Joe still remembers how the Bucs secondary was roasted and toasted on opening night against Dallas last season. Dak Prescott threw for over 400 yards and the Bucs squeaked out a 31-29 win at The Licht House.
The two teams square off in Week 1 again in just 32 days. The Bucs defense is healthy and the Dallas receiving corps is a shell of what it was last season.
It would be fantastic to see Davis kick off his season with an interception and a top-10-corner-worthy game.

He’s not that good and has been exposed too many times. He needs to earn Top-10.

Another list. Don’t care.

He was carted off, but apparently Ian rapaport said it was just cramps. Fingers crossed.

No pass rush makes a secondary look ever worse

Carlton is far from a top 10 CB

Hey Carlton. CATCH THE DAMN BALL!!!!

Bottom line, to me, is that the Bucs can win a Super Bowl with Carlton Davis as a starting CB. Agree with the dropped interception post, some of them/most of them were right to Davis.

I wouldn’t say far from top 10, but he’s not top 10. He is a great cover corner, but top 10 corners make plays that Davis has yet to show he can make.

Carlton is a good player, but doesn’t deserve to be in the top ten as of today. Other than our safeties and 33 million nickel corners I think our secondary is the weak link on our defense despite having some talented dudes. If our first four opponents and their good quarterbacks don’t atomize our secondary I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I don’t care about rankings. Let’s see Carlton and his mates force a completed pass to be contested instead of so many wide arse open receivers running free in a busted zone coverage. Let’s see “off coverage” played so the cushion doesn’t yield an automatic first down. Let’s see some tackling instead of are whiffing. Let’s see the DBs hold onto a ball they touch with two hands.
Then we’ll be on to something.

Top 10 defensive backs take the ball away. Period.
Pass breakups mean very little. All they say is that QB’s aren’t scared to throw at you.
Davis is an above average CB that benefited in free agency because Dean and SMB haven’t developed fast enough to make him expendable.
