Bucs Training Camp Notes (Practice No. 10)
August 7th, 2022
A cool-down trailer the Bucs have this year at training camp adjacent to One Buc Palace. It’s basically a walk-in meat locker about 20-25 feet long. The slimy Saints have one and they pack ice in it. The rig has two benches inside that are as long as the cooler. Players hop in from time to time during practice if they are getting overheated and sometimes after practice.
Rookie skill position players are really starting to make an impact. Cade Otton might just push Cam Brate at No. 1 tight end if he continues his recent improvement. Zyon McCollum finally showed off his athletic ability. Rachaad White continues to run effectively. Ko Kieft, who could always catch the ball, is beginning to look smooth in the passing game. And a backup expected to be a cornerstone player in the near future continues to see his arrow point down.
All of this and more in the final Sunday practice of Bucs training camp 2022.
* Playoff Lenny (twice) and Giovani Bernard try to punch the ball through the left side of the line and get nowhere.
* QB Ryan Griffin is getting snaps with the first-team offense. Over to the side, Kyle Trask is throwing one-on-one drills highlighting receivers vs. defensive backs.
* Tom Brady splits the defense and gets the ball to Russell Gage. Folks better start placing their orders for Gage jerseys. Don’t say Joe didn’t warn you when they are sold out.
* Playoff Lenny tries the right side this time and again, gets nowhere. Dang, the run defense has really picked it up the past few practices.
* Brady gets the ball to Gage over the middle for about a 15-yard pickup.
* Blaine Gabbert runs left and sidearms a ball to tight end J.J. Howland.
* Cam Brate is out again today (Julio Jones had a Vet Day and was on bucket hat patrol). Because of this, Cade Otton and Ko Kieft got a lot of snaps with the first-team.
* Running with the second team, running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn runs left and finds a wall. He cuts back to the right and there is all sorts of green real estate and he’s off to the races.
* The Bucs offensive line must be getting sick of seeing backs stuffed. Rachaad White runs left and there is a hole so big Joe could have driven his Bill Currie Ford F-150 through it. White houses it. This White is starting to look like a running back.
* Center John Molochon snaps the ball over Gabbert’s right shoulder, which basically blows up the play.
* Ugh. Kyle Trask’s first pass of the day is a pick-six. He throws to the right for Otton and the ball is way high. Otton skies and it goes off his left hand and bounces into the arms of Ross Cockrell, who houses it. Trask’s day actually goes downhill from here.
* Sweet catch: Gabbert aims for Kameron Brown along the right sideline and Brown catches it, getting both feet down as he heads out of bounds.
* Gabbert throws over the middle and Logan Ryan picks it off. Ryan has at least three picks in nine practices. Not a bad ratio for the veteran defensive back.
* Brady throws left and wide for Gage. It seemed as if cornerback Dee Delaney may have gotten a hand on the ball.
* Gabbert hits White along the left sideline and then follows that by hitting a wide-arse open Jerreth Sterns to the left.
* Sack! Gabbert has the whistle blown on him as the defense line swarmed. Looked like Will Gholston was in there first.
* Kaylon Geiger goes low for a pass over the middle from Trask.
* What a pretty pass: Trask patiently waits for a play to develop and hits Kenjon Barner as he was coming out of the backfield, right in the numbers. Sadly, this would be Trask’s lone good play of practice.
* What an atrocious pass!: On the very next play, Joe has no clue what Trask was looking at. He targets a short pass to Sterns towards the right, so short that it was damn near a screen. The pass hits outside linebacker Jordan Young squarely in the gut and he houses it. If that were America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, people would be throwing sh!t on the field in outrage. And that’s the God’s honest truth! But don’t you dare hint Trask is struggling. You’ll be branded “Hater.”
Red zone
* Brady fakes left and throws right and finds Tyler Johnson for a touchdown.
* Brady throws to the far left pylon for Otton and the Washington product pulls in the pass with an over-the-shoulder catch, just like it was drawn up. Who says the PAC-12 doesn’t produce players?
* Otton gradually gets better and better each practice. Remember, Otton was behind the 8-ball because he couldn’t practice through the offseason after ankle surgery last fall.
* Brady tries for J.J. Howland in the far right corner and linebacker J.J. Russell breaks up the pass. Dy-no-mite!
* Gabbert handles a bad snap and runs left for no gain. He follows that up with a touchdown to Otton on the left side.
* Gabbert gets the snap and waits and waits and nobody is open, so he runs right and scores. Gabbert ran so gingerly he looked as if he was tip-toeing into the end zone, almost begging the defense to not hit him, even though he had on an orange jersey.
11-on-11
* Brady goes left for Scotty Miller who is wide-arse open.
* Brady hits Otton on a crossing pattern from the left near the right seam for a big gain.
* Playoff Lenny catches a pass from Brady on the left side.
* Bernard turns a short pass from Brady into a good gain.
* Pick! Gabbert aims for Howland along the right sideline but Antoine Winfield jumps the route and gets a pick.
* It seems Winfield along with Ryan have made the most splash plays for Bucs defensive backs this training camp.
* Gabbert connects with Geiger on a slant pass from the right perfectly in stride. But, oops, Geiger trips over his own feet and gets far fewer yards than he could have otherwise had.
* Kyle Rudolph makes an appearance and catches a Brady offering for a big gain.
* Ko Kieft runs a crossing pattern from the right and smoothly catches a Brady pass for about 15 yards near the left seam and turns upfield. This Kieft is beginning to look like a weapon in the passing game. Joe can only recall once or twice he failed to catch a pass. Not bad for a guy the draftniks claimed was a one-trick blocking pony.
* Kyle Trask is rattled! Awful sign here, people. If Trask hasn’t lost all his confidence he’s close to running dry. On three straight pass plays he pulled the ball down and ran. Joe really doubts these were scripted plays. Once, sure. Twice, well, that’s a bit of a stretch. Three times? Nah. This is starting to become downright sad. But hey, the scrambles were productive.
* Right now, as in today, Aug. 7, 2022, Joe honestly doesn’t know if Trask is the third-string quarterback. And Joe’s not trolling or using hyperbole. Trask is regressing and that should not be happening for a second-year quarterback with the same offense and same coaches, a second-round pick in the final practice of his second week of training camp. Shoot, even Gabbert has improved over the past week.
* Trask throws to USFL star Bug Howard and he is blasted by Don Gardner.
* Likely a coverage sack on Trask as he throws the ball away.
* Whew. Trask throws a pass down the right sideline for a running back who tips it and the ball falls right into the hands of Vyncint [not a type] Smith. Touchdown! Dang if Trask doesn’t have a bunch of passes that are tipped.
* Superb play! Zyon McCollum chases down Bernard from behind, who got loose along the right sideline and tackles him. McCollum showed off that athletic ability that he was known for at Sam Houston State.
Goal line
* White is getting a lot of reps with the first-team offense.
* Brady finds Tyler Johnson in the back of the end zone and Johnson flips the ball in the air in celebration.
* Brady waits… and waits… and waits… looks left and then throws to the middle of the end zone right to Jaelon Darden for a touchdown. Good job of Darden to find a way to get open.
* Joe is sorry for not getting the gentleman’s name, but a reader noticed Joe left his phone and hollered at Joe to remember it. Joe owes this guy some Big Storm beers. He talked football with Joe for a good chunk of practice so if this gentleman remembers the conversations and leaves those subjects and players’ names in the comments, Joe will e-mail you with how to get paid in beer. A good samaritan indeed!

Itās sad that I couldnāt be more thrilled to have Blaine Gabbert as backup. Bucs can win games with him. Trask reads like he shouldnāt even be in the league. Bucs will still have sooo much talent going in to next yr and the next – I hope Licht is turning over every rock starting now for someone who wonāt wreck the car next yr when Brady is gone.

Iām sure all the UF fans will be triggered by this, but Trask seemed like a wasted 2nd round pick last year to me. No offense to the young man. Hope it works out but sheesh.

Good to see Gage and Brady developing chemistry. This Otton guy may prove to better than OJ. I havenāt heard anything about the O-line. How the hell is Hainsey looking? It sounds like heās doing well based on no report.

I have never seen Joe throw so much shade on a player, Trask.
I am fine with it. I believe that he is fairly giving an opinion on a guy in sports who has lost all confidence. No place on this team for him at this point.
I would gladly trade him and Goatfarmer’s sister for a bad of donuts.

In all fairness , is the dline that much better ? Or has our oline taken 2 steps back. Cause brady gets ball out so quick that he can make an average line look better then it is on pass plays. But cant cover up the same stink on run plays. Hope hainsey can figure things out by week 1. A return by jensen in december would be epic. And i Hope there is a clear winner at left guard spotā¦cause it sounds like a different day has a different guard (walton/ goedeke/ stinnie) taking snaps with the ones. I wish it was the opposite and one guy sticks out and deserved to be with the ones every practice

And i have said this before. My bro is a diehard gator. He didnt like the trask pick on draft night cause he thought he would be a bust at nfl level. Sounds like trask just goes thru the motions and isnt learning a dang thing.
And with brady out a few days he was given reps with ones and twos and no real difference in the results.
He will get time in preseason games for sure

I am only partway through, just thought Iād stop and comment about Trask. Joe mentioned how if you say something bad youāre labeled a haterā¦ Not for me. I have defended him and will continue to defend him as long as the Bucs have him on the roster. If they think he sucks and isnāt progressing and get rid of him, then so be it.
Itās just about reality and giving the guy a chance. Heās done nothing but practice for a year.
People who thinks heās ready to be the starter are out of their minds.
People who think heās a bust and Bucs should have never taken him are equally out of their minds.
I donāt care how it plays out, it wasnāt a bad selection at the time. I hope something clicks and he ends up great, but so far itās not looking good.

Good to hear about the improvement in some of these rookies. Also great to see Gholstonās name. As much as we talk about VEA and Hicks, we must remember their back ups are Nacho and Gholston who are both very solid.
The concerning thing was how many times you said a QB stood there waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. Where was Shaq, Nelson, JTS, Hallā¦.?

Look I loved the Trask pick, but not because of Trask, because I thought we needed to develop one. I was willing to give him a chance as I would for any young player. But if Trask sucks, he sucks. Draft another next year, and move on. I believe you see what you’re seeing with Trask. That’s disturbing. Can’t wait to see it myself

Buc’s staff were kind of tip-toeing around the subject of Trask last year and the off-season. (Didn’t the qb coach lament he couldn’t find a way to get him enough practice reps?) It’s starting to sound like no-one wanted to talk about the elephant in the room

I like that Otton kid but I’m even more encouraged that Kief can catch if we need him to. Maybe we won’t need to call Gronk in December after all.

Well, when we win the SB we won’t get much of a chance in the draft to pick a really good QB to train up, so I am a bit disheartened to hear this. I ask again, though, just how is that Hainsey doing at center if he is still playing it? I don’t hear him mentioned much. Heluva job writing all these practice notes. No wonder it takes some time to get it up. IDK what I’d do without this info and your hard work, Joe.

Not saying Trask will even be on the team next year. But Joe, he is almost a third-round pick. Jameis was the Number 1 pick in the draft…. that means he was worth at least a handful of high picks in that draft or any draft. Trask fails, another disappointment at QB. When a number 1 pick in the draft fails, it usually means that franchise isn’t going to be worth a squat for a decade. So I think putting Trask and Jameis failures in the same sentence is somewhat comparing apples to oranges.

I think people are “Triggered” by the Trask bashing because this site has never really given him a fair shake. I’ve seen tweets that Blaine has thrown multiple INTs and yeah this site mentions them in the notes – but that’s it. With Trask if he has a bad play its usually followed with a couple sentences adding to just how bad of a play it was for the QB (no matter if the WR drops the ball, or should have caught it but it went through their hands) i.e. see the notes today. I don’t know what they guy is going to be, or how he will develop. But Joe can’t act like their isn’t a bias when reporting on Trask. There’s such a bias you try to put a disclaimer that there is no bias before the article.

My only defense for Trask is that he didnāt get much rep as a rookie. Therefore heās playing like a rookie now that he getting more experience finally. Coach Arian went all in on trying to win versus developing Trask. What making the matter worst is the fact Brady uncertain availability for the past two years. Trask need to make the rookie mistakes to grow into a wise vet. The all out drive to win the Super Bowl hurt Trask timely development. Like rookie and second year players commonly say, āThe game is much fasterā or āThe game is beginning to slow down for me.ā Trask development is much different from JTS since we donāt play multiple QBs in a game.
If we keep Trask, then I hope we alternate Vet day off for Brady and Gabbert. We know what those two can do. Why stunt the development of Trask some more? Trask need the experience with quality players unlike the third and fourth team. Personally, I would sit Brady and Gabbert the first preseason game. Brady the second game. Finally, all three play. Itās unrealistic to expect Trask to be a pro bowl caliber player much less an average qb with little experience.
My concern with Trask is he making the right read in term of whoās open on time. If yes, then he need to work on what throws can and cannot work with actual reps. If no, then more video studying and working with Brady off the field is needed. Wrong reads may be a sign of bust territory. Right read but bad throws are experience base. There is hope in this case.
I dislike the Florida Gators, but I do want the kid to be successful with my Bucs. We definitely need a contingency plan after Brady really retire.

Some in the national media are reporting that Trask is a total bust, and might never be an NFL QB.
If so, what are we to do when Brady leaves next year, if he leaves ?
Of course, if we play and win a super bowl this year, Brady stays another year, to give us time to find his replacement.
It sure is not looking like Trask is that guy.

I’ve heard stories of players who just aren’t “good” in practice but come game time, are much better. Is it possible Trask just isn’t a good practice player?
I guess we’ll see how Trask does in preseason and go from there.

Trask better look like the second coming of the goat in the preseason or he might get put on the practice squad or cut. If he comes out and stinks it up then the Bucs just need to admit they blew it and move on from him. Donāt make a bad pick worse by carrying him and denying a position to another player who can help this team win a Super Bowl. Itās all or bust this year. We can worry about next year, next year.

I think we need to see Trask in a lot of preseason action. If he fails then itās time to cut our loses and move on. Practice has so many variables, especially when the majority of guys Trask is playing with will be gone in September. While I thought drafting a QB from UF was a mistake, I am willing to be proven wrong if he does well in preseason.

Kyle Trask never took one snap in practice in 2021 when the season started. You don’t develop a quarterback like that and it’s been confirmed by the pewter report. This year’s training camp was the first time he took a snap in practice since the last preseason game against the Texans. That’s why this franchise has never develop a quarterback and they probably never will. Yall might as well get ready for Jerry Golf , Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz, Sam Donald, Jimmy G and Ryan Tannehill to be the quarterback in 2023 and we ain’t winning nothing with either of those quarterbacks . Because all of them need a good running game just to look like a average quarterback and we run the ball 20 percent of the time.

Joe has been bashing Trask since they drafted him and he has set a narrative against Trask because when you listen to others who’s been at camp the only bad practice was wensday this whole camp and even then it was said he started bad but didn’t end bad . And they broke it down play by play . And I never cared about what college a player came from that’s a Florida thing yall do on here and that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen on a team website. I liked Jamies so I guess I was a FSU fan. I like Trask so now I’m a FU fan that’s the problem with this fan base to me on this site.

That’s not what’s important here some of yall care more about the school were these players come from than the players playing good or being developed. The bucs bringing in Brady was the best thing that happened to Jamies. He went to a better organization and coaching staff and he looks like a better quarterback so far . Just get ready for one of those average or below average quarterback that will be behind center next year for the bucs.

Trask will be an NFL quarterback ….hopefully with the Bucs. Let’s take breath and give him a chance. I followed him at UF and saw determination, a good head, a strong arm and a winning attitude. Let him develop under good coaching and he’ll fulfill his potential….stop commenting on the negatives and envision the potential. He is a Winner!!!….IMHO.

The only thing that’s been proven by the bucs is they destroy every single quarterback they drafted. Some end up with better organizations and they either win superbowls or they become better quarterbacks. Trent Dilfer said if he would have gotten drafted by the Colts his career would have been better than it was . Go look what Steve Young said about the difference between what he learned in SF vs Tampa and you will understand why I believe Tampa is where young quarterbacks careers come and die.

Joe, I love that our defense is standing tall against the run, but you’ve now got me concerned about our OLine. The only OLineman mentioned today was Center John Molochon (‘snaps the ball over Gabbertās right shoulder’). Are none of our OLinemen standing out? Has no one thrown Vea or Hicks or Gholston to the ground yet while run blocking? (ya right, like that’s gonna happen).

Trent Dilfer wouldāve sucked anywhere he went. And plus, Failed Bucs QBs In the past played with poor coaching staffs. You canāt really compare that to Traskās current situation because heās being coached by an OC who recently won a Super Bowl.

I read on another site that Trask has not been playing with the first team but with mostly camp meat. Put Brady with the camp meat for a day and see how many picks he throws. Hell heās had quite a few picks already and itās all first team guys.

Sadly there is no DVR at practice. Joe has to follow the ball, sadly. If Joe is monitoring a specific lineman or linebacker Joe will miss the entire play. Judging the oline is tricky anyway because who knows what the assignments are?

Look Trask is a Gator. That means you have to like him.
Other then that I dont get the fascination……borderline obsession. Trying to hit on a QB at pick #65 is a total longshot. You take the risk because its a freaking QB. If hes a bust you go draft another one or sign somebody else. Thats a much better position then half the fans in the league who find out their QB os a bust by pulling their hair out on Sundays.

Trask mostly has worked with camp meat. When Brady was gone he was with mostly second team and occasionally first team. Thatās when he started going downhill.
Joe has pointed out many times how the camp meat is not helping him. However, donāt you want your QB to raise the level of players around him?

@Defense Rules. Our OL is a big concern. They had so reps, but from what I’ve read, the front 7 have been having their way most of the time. The OL was once one the biggest strengths is now a liability. They just handed Hainsey the C position. They should bring in a vert to at least challenge him. The LG position is also unstable. I’ve been sounding the alarm on our OL since Marpet retired, and when Jensen went out it became an even bigger concern.
We invested all this money in a WR position, and yet this team is willing to go into the season with an unproven center and LG. This is malpractice at its highest. This is a receiver-driven offense where passing concepts are long developing. It requires time in the pocket to let those plays develop. We won’t be maximizing the ability of these offense because Tom will be under constant pressure.
I know some have said Tom will have the final decision on the center position, but i don’t buy it one bit. The OL is Licht’s baby, and he loves Hainsey. I think theyre perfectly fine with Hainsey taking his lumps even if it comes at the expense of Brady leaving on a stretcher. I don’t care how how hard Hainsey works. I want to see him get the job done on the field.

Joe, I’ve gone back and read your notes and it seems like half of Trask’s passes are dropped by the receiver. Yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe it’s not half, but it’s a huge percentage. That is very frustrating to a quarterback. It’s like being on the mound pitching and having your fielders commit three errors each inning. You can’t pitch like that.

Frankly, if the venom on this site is representative of the Bucs’ fanbase, if I were Trask I’d ask for a trade, or ask to be released so he can find a team with a quarterback coach. I don’t think the Bucs have it.

You will never see on this site about Brady throwing more than 1 pick on this site because of the promotion of Brady . When we win it’s all Brady but when we lose it’s the team fault. Brady has been throwing picks in practice and that’s playing with the ones . I hate this lie about the quarterback making the receivers better if a receiver can’t get open or if the plays require for a longer route pattern than the quarterback has to hold the ball longer wich means either more picks or sacks or throw aways. If it’s all because of quarterback why bring in 2 hall of famers and a pro bowl running back? And Brady even threw a lot of picks for him because of BA style of offense.

You are right the Bucs donāt have A quarterback coach.
They have two or three. Clyde Christensenās title is
QUARTERBACKS COACH. Tom Moore assist coach known for coaching Qbs and Bruce Arians aka the Qb wispier.

Ash . Payton wanted to go to the dolphins that’s been proven just like Brady wanted to play for the dolphins. Jamies played with 3rd and 4th string type of receivers. A good coach can see that so he fixed his offense according to what he had at receiver not quarterback. The saints were 5 and 2 with Jamies being the starter. He also was beating the brakes off us before he got hurt and that’s just the truth. Once Jamies went down the team went down it’s just facts. I tell you what Jamies at quarterback with us always put up more than 3 points. The last time we beat the Rams Jamies was the quarterback. Again so far Jamies has been looking better since he left . And the bucs still the only franchise that never developed a quarterback and that’s just the truth.

Stanglass. All those guys you just named ain’t never developed a quarterback either. BA is called the quarterback whisper because of a book he wrote call the quarterback whisper. Every quarterback he coached threw a lot of picks or they got hurt . Also those same coaches coached Payton Manning to a 100 picks in 5 years so they haven’t proved nothing and they had Brady throwing a bunch of picks at first until Brady said let’s win a different way wich is his New England Patriots type of offense.

I’m willing to give Trask the benefit of the doubt and see what he does during preseason. However, if you can’t cook, you gotta get out of the kitchen, so if he can’t play, cut him and pick him back up on the PS and let him develop for another year. It would actually be a benefit to the Bucs to not have to carry so many QB’s on the final roster.

@Joe Of course some of his teammates are high on him. What are they supposed to say? Wirfs said Haisney was his best friend. Are we really gonna get objective analysis from him or his other teammates? Hainsey is generally well liked, but that has no bearing on whether he can get the job done on the field.

If Trask doesnt work out, so be it. QBs taken in the 2nd and 3rd round can go either way. Its always a risk/reward situation. However these coaches have been working a lot on trying to improve his mechanics and footwork over the past year and he may be trying to overthink everything. If you completely change the way a guy plays, it’s going to look like a regression until he starts to figure it out and put everything together. Think of it like trying to fix your golf swing after doing it wrong for years.

I will never understand why they picked Trask and then basically ignored him all last year. Any fault has to be shared with coaches that were so all in for another Super Bowl win they failed to put mutch effort in developing him. Let’s face it, the Bucs were caught pants down when Brady said he was retiring. If they had given more reps instead of almost none they would have known what they had for sure. I have no dog in this fight. Plenty of valid criticism for team owners, coaches and water boys for not doing way more evaluation! If you hire an employee and let him get splinters in his ass because he never got significant playing time you get what you deserve. Nothing! If he got cut tomorrow we would miss nothing because we developed nothing. How short sided was that! He should have at least played every 4th quarter last preseason. Lots of blame to go around if Brady gets hurt and we only have 3 qbs that probably nobody in the entire NFL would want as a starter! We have no solid backup. PERIOD.

Is anyone even bothering to coach Trask up? Christensen chucked him under the bus during the off-season, and BL was a questionable QB.
To call him a waste at #65 is a blast against Brady, who was a sixth round pick. I know that Brady isn’t a mentor, so Trask needs something, like a start against the Dolphins and some sports psychologist to get his game back.
I saw Florida sputter with Franks and then I saw what Trask did when he came in. I can’t put it on Mullen because he was the most close to worthless.
Let the boy play, He still hasn’t been as bad, or as good, as Jameis.

Ko Kieft remains on pace to be the surprise star of not only the draft but possibly the season, receiving like a TE1, and everyone knows he’s a sledgehammer blocker.
If Otton also progresses, Bucs will eventually have a great starting tandem.

Note that Trask never beat out franks in practice at Florida, but was better in games for sure. Also Frank’s is getting reps at tight end yo Dave his career
Word was Tebow practiced poorly but of course he won games too.
Painfully, it’s a business. The guys around you need to have you play better in practice for their timing.
Hopefully Trask can catch on in Canada and get playing time there if his preseason isn’t good enough.

Gooffarmer. I’m from the south and it ain’t no excuses for Trask if he was practicing last year but he wasn’t his last time being behind center was the Texans game. That’s not his fault I don’t think he told the coaches that he want to practice until may 022 . And now he’s being evaluated as if he’s been practicing all last year . Get ready for Jerry Golf, Rayn Tannehill, Mitchell Trubisky, Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz, Sam Donald or Jimmy G one of those quarterbacks will be the guy next year and we ain’t winning nothing with those trash quarterbacks . All you see is Brady and Brady is out of here next year and the bucs have never developed a quarterback and they had 2 years for him to learn behind a hall of fame quarterback and still couldn’t develop him . Is that what yall call a quarterback whisper ?? Lol š š¤£!!
