Bucs Training Camp Notes (Practice No. 1)
July 27th, 2022UPDATED 12:40 p.m. – Face it: You craved this all offseason.
Behold Joe’s training camp practice notes. Joe jotted down notes from several plays as the Bucs opened 2022 training camp this morning at One Buc Palace. Good crowd on hand, enthusiastic crowd.
If you don’t see a player mentioned in the notes, it only means Joe did not see them flash. This does not necessarily mean a player had a bad practice or, as folks who like to butcher the King’s English say, that Joe “hates” a certain player. These are just innocent observations.
Enjoy!
How hungry are Bucs fans for real football? As usual the Bucs began practice with special teams work. When the team broke out of special teams units into offensive and defensive drills, the crowd nearly gave the Bucs a standing ovation.
* Former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians was at practice. He was in his red golf cart wearing a big straw hat in his usual spot: parked behind the quarterbacks. At one point Joe noticed Arians and Brady having a conversation and Brady had a big smile on his face.
* On the very first play of 11-on-11s, Playoff Lenny takes a handoff from Brady, runs right and is gone! Of course, this is underwear football where tackling is strictly forbidden.
* The first week of practice will be underwear football. The first padded practice (which means hitting is involved if not encouraged) is scheduled to be Aug. 1.
* On the second play of 11-on-11s, Brady hits the immortal Cyril Grayson on a crossing pattern from the right side. The ball appeared to be a little in front of Grayson and maybe a big high but Grayson went up and got it. Then, Grayson turned upfield along the left sidelines and turned on those LSU track jets.
*Aaron Stinnie seemed to working as the No. 1 left guard alongside Ryan Jensen throughout drills. Joe thought rookie Luke Goedeke looked smallish, almost like he dropped a little weight since the NFL Draft.
* Couple of rookies are playing on the second team in this series. Ko Kieft was in at tight end and Rashaad White was the lone running back.
* Russell Gage somehow caught a pass from Ryan Griffin on a crossing pattern with a defender draped all over him.
* Mike Evans makes a sick catch along the left sideline on a pass from Brady. The crowd erupted with approval.
* Tom Brady throws a bomb down the right hashmark to Breshad Perriman, who was in double-coverage. It appeared the thrown might have been underthrown. Perriman outfought the two defenders (one was Carlton Davis) to haul the ball in and run past the defense to house the play.
* Logan Ryan tips a Brady pass in red zone work high into the air and Davis comes down with the first pick of training camp.
* Blaine Gabbert lofts a rainbow-ish pass with that baseball delivery of his to the goal line and Grayson, who got a step on rookie cornerback Zyon McCollum. Grayson reels the ball in with one arm for a score without breaking stride at all.
* Gabbert rifles a ball to Devin Thompkins along the right sideline. Gabbert’s pass hits Thompkins right in the numbers with just enough room for Thompkins to tap both feet inbounds. Pretty play.
* During lapses in practice (field goal kicking, water breaks) Brady can be seen tossing passes to a Bucs staffer to keep loose.
* Joe wants to see a lot more of this during the season: Kyle Rudolph runs a pattern to his right and Brady hits Rudolph with a pass right on the belt.
* Joe noticed all the linemen had an extra exterior padded shell on their helmets. Joe is pretty sure this is to help protect against concussions. The padding makes players look like The Great Gazoo.
*Late in practice, rookie RB Rachaad White tried to juke veteran safety/cornerback Logan Ryan. It didn’t work. Ryan stepped into it and bear hugged him.
*Sweet pass breakup by Devin White on Rudolph, about a 12-yard pass over the middle.
*Damn, Lavonte David looks quick and healthy. Great coverage on Gage.
*Gabbert took a coverage sack and receiver Jaelon Darden wasn’t happy about it. He wanted Gabbert to have taken the deep shot but it didn’t come.
*Drop!!! A bad one by camp meat receiver Kaylon Geiger, Sr. It was a sweet, soft-touch deep ball end zone throw by Kyle Trask.
*Perhaps Trask got rattled. On the next play, he threw a pick to safety Chris Cooper on an overthrown ball. That was the last play of practice in third-team duty. Joe would love to see Trask play with the stud receivers, but that’s not likely to happen.

Logan Ryan also got a pick 6 on Brady’s last pass as a Patriot. From distant memory, I believe he grabbed a deflected pass. I’m sure Ryan is going claim that he’s got Brady’s number in the locker room.

Good stuff. Thanks, Joe. Out there in this heat.

The NFL season starts today! Been waiting for these camp notes. Thanks Joe!

Nice work Joe. Looking forward to padded practices. And not having to read the word underwear repeatedly in your posts.

Am I the only one who thinks Julio Jones looks like side show Bob????
July 27th, 2022 at 1:16 pm
not sure why arians was there in his golf cart ??
July 27th, 2022 at 1:17 pm
Goal line spread package….. Evans, Godwin, Jones, Rudolph, and Brate. How are defenses going to cover that???

July 27th, 2022 at 1:32 pm
Let the season begin!!
July 27th, 2022 at 1:44 pm
Thanks for the details Joe.
Id like to know what position Logan Ryan is actually playing.
Also, those pads on the OL helmets are called guardian caps and I think the NFLPA is making teams use them in camp.
July 27th, 2022 at 1:50 pm
Evans. Godwin. Jones. Perriman. Miller. Gage. Johnson.
Something’s gotta give.
July 27th, 2022 at 1:58 pm
Welcome to the NFL Mr. White. Logan Ryan might be the best FA signing Licht made this off season. You can bet that he’ll have everyone lined up properly. Hopefully he challenges Bowles, and his sometimes inane game plans.
July 27th, 2022 at 1:59 pm
Joe- ONLY 2 mentions of Trask?! You HATER!!! LOL!
Great notes as always!

Rookies must be in AWE

Passing, you’re correct. It was a Brady frustration ball, because nobody could get separation. The pass was intended for the ghost of Mohammed Sanu. I remember it well because I was at Gillette, and knew it was the last pass I’d ever see him throw in that uniform.
July 27th, 2022 at 2:05 pm
That Brady was smiling at Arians tell us the reported rumors of a rift with Brady are BS.
Believe me, if Brady wanted Arians completely out of the picture, he would not be anywhere close to him, and smiling to boot!
Thanks for all the Intel Steve and Lee !

Nice to hear that Lavonte David was looking quick and healthy.
July 27th, 2022 at 2:35 pm
Can’t wait for my August 10th practice with the Miami Dolphins.

Sometimes teams keep 7 WRs. I doubt they will, but if they really like all of them, they could do it.
July 27th, 2022 at 2:43 pm
I love these write-ups Joe, thanks as always for publishing them.
Also I agree with you about Trask – I wish they’d give him some 2nd team snaps at least, and I assume they will at some point. If Brady is willing to take any days off, that also would be an ideal day to slip him into that #1 spot. I’m not sold on Trask at all, but I’d still like to see what the results are if he’s not playing with complete trash players around him.
July 27th, 2022 at 2:51 pm
Thanks, Joe
July 27th, 2022 at 3:17 pm
David is the best news on Day 1.
July 27th, 2022 at 3:31 pm
Thanks Joe for all the great work you put in for all of us.

July 27th, 2022 at 4:27 pm
great news, good work joes!
How are our DE’s looking.
We need to sign another edge guy, very thin there.
July 27th, 2022 at 4:28 pm
Thanks for info, Joes!!
GO BUCS!!!
July 27th, 2022 at 4:53 pm
Odds are one of the wide receivers will get a semi serious injury by the end of training camp
July 27th, 2022 at 5:07 pm
This rift nonsense is just that. You have 2 grown men who dedicated thier lives to football. Perhaps Brady did want some things to change. I know thry worked it out like men. Arians looks healthy and happy win win.
July 27th, 2022 at 5:30 pm
I don’t know the details of Julio Jones’ deal, however, I think this is Light’s first mistake during TB12 era. He’s not worth $6 mil. They should’ve offered $2 mil + achieved bonuses.
July 27th, 2022 at 5:54 pm
Every season I pick an underdog player to make the team. Last year it was Grant Stuard. This year its WR D. Thompkins…
July 27th, 2022 at 6:36 pm
Rod … ‘Sometimes teams keep 7 WRs. I doubt they will, but if they really like all of them, they could do it’.
Wouldn’t surprise me a bit Rod if the Bucs kept 7 WRs, largely because of injury potential (and we are All-In), but just as much because of next season’s WR status. Julio Jones, Perriman, Miller & Grayson will all be FAs in 2023 (assuming they all make the 2022 team, which is not a sure thing). Mike Evans, Godwin & Gage would obviously still be under contract, and we’ll probably draft 1 WR, so next year we’d probably only keep 2 more for a total of 6. Competition will be stiff.
July 27th, 2022 at 6:56 pm
I want to know how our young players are doing . I want to know how our players we drafted from 2020 to 2022 are doing. I’m tired of hearing everything Brady and our older players are doing . Brady is going to be good and all the rest of our veterans are going to be ok . I want to know how Trask is developing or our new rookies tigh ends or doing looking so far. I’ve been hearing Trask has been out playing Gabbert since the mini camp . That’s what we should be hearing about more than our veterans players from last year. As long as they not injured I really don’t want to hear about them because I know they are going to be good this year.
July 27th, 2022 at 7:07 pm
Pretty sure I bought weed and trinkets from that guy in Jamaica a few years ago mon.
July 27th, 2022 at 7:21 pm
f you don’t see a player mentioned in the notes, it only means Joe did not see them flash
July 27th, 2022 at 7:44 pm
Kentuckybuc. Joe has one agenda and that’s Tom Brady . Joe doesn’t look for any other player but Brady . I saw on other bucs podcasts like the pewter report and I forgot the young guy name who be at the practices he has a podcast as well and he gave more of a recap than Joe. Ira Kaufman podcast doesn’t focus on other players but Brady and the rest of the veterans on the team. Julio Jones will be a situational player as well as Kyle Rudolph.

Most of us want to hear about players who will actually play in a game.
July 27th, 2022 at 8:39 pm
Can’t wait for 1st preseason game.
July 27th, 2022 at 9:06 pm
Oneilbuc: Read the article, there are several players mentioned besides Tom Brady.
July 27th, 2022 at 10:56 pm
Great camp notes. Keeps the fans well informed.
July 27th, 2022 at 11:55 pm
I’m a little concerned about secondary depth given last year’s injury issues.
July 28th, 2022 at 12:19 am
So in summary…
Dardung blames someone else for his not getting open. He sucks.
Goobert still sucks.
So does Trask.
White is a CFL player. Maybe.
July 28th, 2022 at 12:40 am
Ty for the observations Joes! Finally. with more to come! Go Bucs!

Goatfarmer: With all that is positive with Bucs football, you choose to complain about the backups and the backups to the backups? Wow.
