Yes, we are six days from the opening of 2022 Bucs training camp. But already BSPN is looking ahead.
In a feature on each team’s future for the next three years, Jeremy Fowler types the Bucs must have a succession plan to replace Tom Brady. In recent interviews, Brady sure has left the door open to playing in 2023. Joe doesn’t know what that may cost the Bucs but the core of this year’s offense, sans Brady, is under contract for next year.
Fowler doesn’t seem to think Brady’s Bucs successor is on the roster.
What could change for the better: We already touched on it a bit, but it’s an obvious one here. The Bucs have to lock up a succession plan to Brady, who is a free agent in 2023. There are a bunch of directions Tampa Bay could go, and the 2023 draft is well stocked with passers. The roster is good enough to lure a free agent or veteran via trade, too. After all, that plan worked with Brady two years ago.
Joe would like to see what Kyle Trask can do and Joe gets the sense so does new coach Todd Bowles. But the fact that Trask is the only quarterback drafted in 2021 who hasn’t taken a snap in a game (forget that he has yet to wear a gameday jersey) and his quarterback coach whined this spring how he couldn’t find practice snaps for Trask, it sure doesn’t fill Joe with hope and confidence Trask is Brady’s heir.
Joe hasn’t studied potential free agents after the 2022 season nor has Joe done much research on draft-eligible quarterbacks.
If the Bucs have an offense ready to compete for a Super Bowl, Joe doubts the Bucs would want to plug in a rookie quarterback. Though Joe admists to being intrigued by AR-15, Anthony Richardson of Florida.

Coach Christensen was not “whining” lol he emphasized it being hard even getting Gabbert reps behind Brady and that TB12’s return was probably the best thing to happen for Trask as year 2 will be another “redshirt” year for him to develop more. Mentioned Trask not being crowned the heir apparent and even that job, he’d have to earn which is much more important than being a back up to for Brady in 2022.
That said, the idea of 3rd year Kyle Trask vs. a rookie like Will Levis next offseason would be nice

This is something many teams are trying or have and many have failed. Other than Burroughs,Mac Jones was the only rookie that’s done remotely anything so far. Love, Fields, Wilson, Mills, the kids on SF & Jags all struggling. The Herbert’s & Burroughs are diamonds in the rough. Chasing the golden ring isn’t the answer. If you’re going to replace the best it needs to be with something close.

Who is simple. Brady.
If the Bucs are in position for a possible SB run next year, a big reason for that will because TB still has his mojo this year. If so, TB plays another year to get closer to AARP eligibility.
More predictions: Wirfs moves to LT and we use our very late 1st Rd pick on an OT to replace Wirfs at RT (nothing wrong with D. Smith, just need some cap relief to pay TB), 2nd Rd pick to replace LVD (hope he makes it thru this year), 3rd Rd pick to replace a departing DB who plays so well he leaves in FA to get paid, 4th Rd is either a DT or another OLB

I wish everyone would drop the reasoning that Trask sux because he is the only drafted QB not to take a snap.
He is the only drafted QB with Brady at the helm, nobody will displace Brady, not even Aaron Rodgers, so drop that potato.
I think Trask will show more consistent gain this preseason than Gabbert. That should give him the chance if anything happens. I don’t want to curse Brady, but father Time always wins, it is just the when that matters.
Trask should get the chance to win or lose.

That’s baloney. The Bucs have three practice fields. Bruce Arians was very clear the reason he hired so many coaches is for backups to get more snaps.
And Joe Gilbert said he had no problem getting three guys reps to battle for left guard.
Not only did Joe not buy what Christensen was selling, neither did Todd Bowles who three days later said Kyle Trask will get snaps.

If you search the Bucs YouTube page and go back to around the draft there is a interview with Trask, maybe it is just his personality and speaking still. He is underwhelming projecting leadership and confidence. That is just me , you can decide for yourself. That having been said it may have no bearing on him on the field.

This season hasn’t even started, and we’re worrying about next year? First off, there is a succession plan. Why did the Bucs use a second rounder on a QB when Brady had two years left on his deal? For the friggin future! Is it next year, or if Tom comes back the year after? Yes! Don’t believe any QB drafted next year will be able to compete with Trask who by then will have 2 years in the system, and have been groomed by Brady. It would be much wiser to use that late 1st round pick on an impact player that can help Trask succeed. If there’s a better FA available better than Trask fine. Saying there isn’t a plan is flat out B.S..

It’s not bologna Joe, at no point during the presser you eluded to did Christensen “whine” about anything regarding Trasks’ development or make a mystery of where he stood on Trask being a project relevant to the rest of the talent in the QB room. The point wasn’t about Trask NOT getting snaps at all, the point was what Gabbert & Brady command in terms of reps as option QB2 & QB1 relative to how it effects the quality and quantity of the snaps Trasks actually takes.
Developing multiple OLmen for reserve roles and developing a QB for the future behind a starter and his back up aren’t the same. There are always more linemen on the field than any other position on offense, there can only be 1 QB at a time, unless your New Orleans than you got 1 QB between Winston & Taysom Tebow.

If Trask was really the heir apparent, don’t you think he’d at least be on the active gameday roster, just once even? Don’t you think he could be the No. 2 quarterback? When is the last time a healthy guy expected to be a team’s starting quarterback struggled to get reps — in practice!
Right now, as of July 2022, there is zero evidence the Bucs plan to hand Trask the keys to the franchise in 2023.

If there’s not a replacement QB for Brady on the roster, it will be due to pure dereliction of duty by the Bucs. And, please, AR-15 is not a starting NFL QB. As previously stated, he couldn’t even start at Florida.

It is total baloney.
First, were you at that press conference? Joe was 10 feet away from Christensen. Joe heard every word, saw every grimace in his face.
The Bucs have three practice fields. Fact.
Bruce Arians multiple times said the reason he had such a large staff was to have at least two fields in use so backups can get reps and snaps. Fact.
Joe Gilbert said three guards will battle it out to start at left guard. You do that with snaps, not playing spades in the locker room. Fact.
Three days after Christensen bellyached that he could not find snaps for Trask, the head coach totally contradicted his QB coach and stated that Trask will get snaps. Fact.
Not sure why you are trying to play make-believe, unless concocted dreams makes you feel better.

LMAO @ Joe going hard to stand by his mischaraterization of the Clyde Christensens quote. No Joe I wasn’t there, but there year is 2022 video and audio quality are the best it’s been and I just went back and rewatched the presser there wasn’t any “whining” going on, but if that’s the hill you want to build, climb and die on then so be it. I just find it hilarious, when plain english gets spun in to not so plain English to drive a “story” wherever you want.

This guy just looks like a runaround QB to Joe. Granted, Joe has seen very little of Jefferson but when he does throw, it just looks like he heaves it and hopes a receiver can come down with the ball.
Jefferson has a cannon but that doesn’t mean squat in the NFL unless you can throw accurately (sort of like Josh Allen, who has a cannon but wasn’t an NFL QB until he became accurate). To be fair, Joe has no idea of the talent level of his receivers. Were they running sh!tty routes, etc?
At least AR-15 appears to be able to thread the needle and throw a guy open.

Trask or not the Bucs drafted him and will know a lot about him after 2 years. Our coachs should be expected to know if he is starting material or not.
To me that puts us ahead of the curve. If Trask is a flop like most drafted QBs we can save ourselves from wasting a year on the kid. Move on to plan B.
I like the fact that we got more options. If we gotta move on from Trask we get to do it the easy way and not the losing way.

Trask not playing meaningful snaps last year has nothing to do with him not being the future of the franchise, it was part of the plan With 3 vets ahead him one being Brady there was no reason to give him snaps. We were in SB mode, not get Trask ready mode. Why would they use a 2nd on Trask if he wasn’t viewed as a QB who had a future on a SB ready team? He was redshirted last year, this camp and preseason will give us a clearer picture of his future. Last season means nothing.

This is one of those fun, purely SPECULATIVE conversations!
I would think that the logical heir would be Trask. People get enamored with college QBs and forget the success rate is marginal at best. I do not think they start a rookie.
A veteran is a possibility but, you already have a guy in the system now.
I tend to agree with Joe’s logic (a little!) in that Trask should be getting meaningful reps if he IS the “heir apparent.”
Time will tell.

True statement, even if it’s been over used and is otherwise meaningless.
Joes, I typically enjoy your critiques and analysis, but every once in a while a stat/fact gets in your craw and then is just repeated everytime a relevant topic comes up, even if the stat has not direct bearing on the topic.
Trask not taking a regular season snap nor being dressed for a single game is not a knock on the kid. He was the last pick of the 2nd round for a reason, namely that as a QB he wasn’t exepcted to come in and contribute immediately, and needed time to develop. For all the other Rookie QBs that took snaps last season, look at their respective teams’ situations, none of them had 2 healthy veteran QBs (one of them the GOAT) ahead of them for 17 games while vying for playoff position pretty much the whole season.
Clearly the fact that he’s not dressed is not a glowing recommendation of the kid, but I don’t think it can be held against him either given this team’s situation. The Super Bowl was the priority in 2021, and will be again in 2022. Finding out how a second year QB plays in the regular season is much lower on the Totem pole of must do’s, as it should be as long as the Super Bowl is an option.
Now, your comments about Christensen’s remarks do have merit, and is part of that analysis that I was referring to. You’re making an educated inference based on your knowledge of the situation and coaches invovled. While some have commented you’re taking a leap, I can appreciate and respect your insight and thoughts based on your experience. Keep up the good work.

None of this is a “knock on the kid.” Joe is a big believer in actions > words. Someone or some people with influence in the organization are certainly skittish about Trask.
Don’t think anyone expected Trask to contribute. That’s a bit overboard when you have Tom Brady and are gunning for a Super Bowl. But to not even have the guy active against, say a garbage team like the Bears and tell him, “Hey man, if we go up by 21 in the second half we’ll get you on the field,” well, that’s not very reassuring he’s going to take over for Brady in 2023.

Exactly. What sense would it make dressing a 3rd QB on the 46-man gameday roster when we’re plugging and playing at other positions around the roster due to injury? Apparently, that detail gets zero consideration in this entire debate because some are in a rush to judge Trask in a vacuum and remaining oblivious to all the factors contributing to why a rookie QB isn’t the first backup behind Tom Brady.

I hope it’s Brady, but we’ve gotta prepare for the future at some point. The whole Trask deal is weird and it would be cool to see him play a ton the in the preseason. Seeing a quarterback that we drafted succeed here and play for 15 years would be amazing, but I’m not holding my breath…😛

Joe not sure its fair to make that arguement about a “garbage” Bears team. As much fun as it sounds to see Trask get into a blowout game Im not sure thats the wisest way to make a roster decision. One look at the Jets game tells us that you ought to be fully prepared for a dogfight no matter how “garbage” a team is.
As it turns out one win was the difference between playing in Tampa vs LA……..Could have possibly been the difference in winning another SuperBowl. A single game in the NFL is just too important.
Maybe we can lock up the #1 seed this year and Trask can get a shot in week 18.

@Joe, The team was trying to put itself in the best position to win games week in and week out last year, not develop Trask with playing time. It makes sense that the team would rather have an extra WR, DB or LB dressed over a 3rd QB, as that player could not only provide depth, but also ST help and more personnel groupings.
Having any 3rd QB dressed will be less useful in winning games week to week than any other position. It wouldn’t make sense to have him take the spot off another player who is more likely to contribute to wins, just in case the team was up by 3 TDs with less than 6 minutes to go. And thinking of that scenario, what kind of experience would Trask get? If he got 8 snaps, maybe one would be a pass and would likely be for 10 yds or less.
As has been a common theme the past 2 years, the team is all in with Brady and any little advantage they can get to help secure a win, even against garbage teams, they will take. Even if that means the developmental 3rd string QB doesn’t get a chance to dress all season long.

It’s pretty simple. Trask’s college stats were a mirage, he was bailed out by 2 NFL starters and had a superior receiving corps beyond Toney and Pitts. He has poor pocket awareness and stares down his receivers. If he has an NFL career, it will be as a backup. Think a dumber, stronger armed version of Danny Wuerfful.

So yeah, let’s have Trask dressed on the sideline doing nothing meaningful and not worry about the depth players who had to make up for the 7 players who missed that game. We were short 5 starters, 1 depth WR, and a CB we signed to compensate for the injuries at that position before we played Chicago.

I’m late to the conversation. Is Trask the answer? Idk. I believe Joe, he heard Clyde, could read his lips. It’s interesting how the microscope is on a player that nobody has seen take a meaningful snap in the NFL. Yet, No one is turning to the man whose mouth is moving, who’s been a qb coach since 1980 at East TN State. Why doesn’t Clyde get this kid some work on that 2nd …3rd practice field to justify the pick and his job. A 42 yr qb coach to essentially say ‘I can’t do my job’ is pathetic. What the hell?! Sounds more like deflection for a coach inadequacy than a qb one…at least until proven.

Because Trask doesn’t have the “look” most of the football world wants to see at quarterback (despite that “look” rarely winning Super Bowls). If Trask had the “look”, all the haters on this website would be calling the Bucs rayciss for not playing Trask. Remember, the last spot on the football field that does not look like the cornerback position is quarterback and head coach. So, next time you hear or read about a “mobile” or “athletic” quarterback (who never win Super Bowls), you’ll know what their true agenda is.
