Bucs Hopeful For A Week 1 Return Of Chris Godwin
July 8th, 2022Yesterday was the 200-day mark since Chris Godwin tore up his knee courtesy of a low hit from a New Orleans Saints safety P.J. Williams.
The math was done by ESPN NFL super insider Adam Schefter and revealed during his Thursday Bucs chat on NFL Live.
Schefter was asked about Godwin’s injury status, which has been a guarded secret at One Buc Palace.
“They are hopeful that he’ll be ready for opening day,” Schefter said of Bucs officials.
“So that’s encouraging. They’ll chart him, monitor him, track him during the summer, see how he’s coming along. Obviously [they’re] not going to rush him back. Probably would be surprised if we saw him in any preseason games, and I think the goal will be to see if he’s ready for opening day, which I don’t think is out of the question right now.”
Joe spent a bunch of hours sniffing out the veracity of Schefter’s report and everything Joe is hearing is that Godwin has been crushing his rehab and the team is hopeful he’ll be cleared to practice during training camp.
What fantastic news! And it also means Joe will stop referencing Booger McFarland’s emphatic April comment on WDAE radio that Godwin shouldn’t be expected to play until after Thanksgiving.
McFarland, the former Bucs defensive tackle retains a lot of close ties to One Buc Palace, but it appears he got this one wrong or Godwin has come a long way in the last 12 weeks.
For perspective, Rams receiver Cooper Kupp tore his ACL in Week 10 of the 2018 season. He didn’t miss a game in 2019 and had 94 catches, 1,161 yards and 10 touchdowns. Godwin’s ACL was in Week 15 last year.

Culpepper >> Booger

Best news I’ve heard in awhile.

It’s a new age of medicine. Surgeries are becoming less and less invasive, and focusing on the directly on the injury and rehabs have much more scientific information to strengthen a particular muscle group back up. Won’t be soon before an ACL is a 6 month injury.
July 8th, 2022 at 1:14 pm
With the advances in ACL surgery, it has become more common that athletes can fully recover in as little as 6 months. With that timeline, Chris Godwin would be ready for training camp. There are also the mental hurdles that come along with an injury. If you look at the more realistic 8-9 month recovery, that still puts Godwin on track to return around week 1. We open against Dallas, who we beat last year and honestly look to be worse on paper this season. Hopefully he would at least be back for week 2 at the Saints. Would be a great revenge game after they were the ones who injured him. LFG!

Encouraging news!!!
July 8th, 2022 at 1:19 pm
Jesus H Christ!!! That’s a hell of a news!!!
July 8th, 2022 at 1:33 pm
Wow, considering how Godwin tore his ACL in mid-December, this is a tremendous surprise. I hope Schefter is getting an accurate assessment.
July 8th, 2022 at 1:34 pm
Godwin is 6 months post-op, so this kind of blows the “return by thanksgiving” projection out of the water. More like back before Halloween
July 8th, 2022 at 1:35 pm
great news
July 8th, 2022 at 1:42 pm
Not surprised, word about Godwin his rookie year was that he was way ahead of the game in maturity and being a complete pro. I’m sure he attacked his Regan in the same fashion.
July 8th, 2022 at 1:44 pm
Great news
July 8th, 2022 at 1:52 pm
Godwin is such a great teammate and all around good smart dude who actually cares
And is wife is a personal trainer.
I Was not worried about november. Maybe a week or two tops.
Good to here.
July 8th, 2022 at 2:17 pm
Welcome news as Godwin is a team leader who makes other players better.
No drama, all football. Buccaneer man.
July 8th, 2022 at 2:18 pm
Amazing news!
July 8th, 2022 at 2:37 pm
Memo to Jason Light:
This is 100% your call only. Please do not rush things. The owners will support you either way. Fans too!
Anyone who follows football knows Chris can play. Only you can decide when!
July 8th, 2022 at 2:43 pm
I say bring him back week two or three if that’s the little bit of time he still needs to heal. Gage is the real mystery (???)
July 8th, 2022 at 2:47 pm
No way. Dr. Booger obviously knows best.
July 8th, 2022 at 2:55 pm
He’s young. That has a lot to do with healing time. Rehab has a lot of want to involved in it also.
July 8th, 2022 at 3:54 pm
Godwin tore his acl in New Orleans. I don’t think it was at home so it’s been 9 months ppl.
July 8th, 2022 at 4:02 pm
Advances in surgery, advances in recovery treatments and rehab regimens all help. So does hard work. But a lot of it is genetics. Some people heal faster…
July 8th, 2022 at 4:11 pm
I like CG14 going under the radar, we can come out SWINGING
July 8th, 2022 at 4:23 pm
I want him back week 2 against those slimy saints and have a career day against them soooo bad. A big middle finger to that team who played really dirty against us and got away with it last year.
July 8th, 2022 at 4:34 pm
The Saints side of the story is that we cheap shotted Jameis.
Dirty team, always have been. the league lets it happen.
July 8th, 2022 at 4:41 pm
This injury in a lot of ways is psychological. Waiting for the first hit, the first extension. The knee might be ready but has the brain caught up.
July 8th, 2022 at 4:53 pm
The speculation from the beginning was he was going to be ready for the beginning then booger said what he said and then people just started expecting the worse.
July 8th, 2022 at 4:53 pm
Beginning of the season*
July 8th, 2022 at 4:55 pm
You know what Biff, I mentioned the cheap shot myself about a month ago. We have to get back at them. Good call by the way.
July 8th, 2022 at 5:33 pm
I’ll wait for Dr Boogers diagnosis.
July 8th, 2022 at 5:49 pm
We may go undefeated this year now
July 8th, 2022 at 6:07 pm
no reason to rush him.
Game 1 is probably unrealistic.
Lots of rehab and if it’s not close to 100% you are risking a reinjury that would be the end.
July 8th, 2022 at 6:56 pm
Look if anyone can pull an Adrian Peterson type come back it would be CG! Hope he stays healthy and has a career best season!
July 8th, 2022 at 7:31 pm
Joe, you seem to have a friend over at CBS. The story on their site about this says “per ESPN (via joebucsfan) …” The way they wrote it looks like you got the scoop. I guess they don’t follow Schefter over there. Best for everyone to come here first anyway. BS filters already applied for all of our benefit.
July 8th, 2022 at 9:05 pm
From November to week 1? That’s a huge difference. Let’s hope it’s real. It changes a lot of things, one of them being the problem at TE, which would be partially alleviated with a full WR corps.
July 8th, 2022 at 9:08 pm
Great news!
July 8th, 2022 at 9:18 pm
tremendously great news – especially considering the opening 4 games
July 8th, 2022 at 9:40 pm
It would not surprise me to see him in a preseason game or two. He is obviously very close to being ready.
July 8th, 2022 at 10:03 pm
“Joe will stop referencing Booger”
Finally. That “after Thanksgiving” take was bad to start with considering numerous positive reports about Godwins progress over the last couple of months.
July 8th, 2022 at 10:08 pm
Tom knew where CG was with his rehab when he decided to un-retire.
July 8th, 2022 at 11:45 pm
Don’t play him week 2 even if he’s ready
July 9th, 2022 at 7:15 am
If I can have surgery to re-attach my Achilles tendon and be declared ready to return to sports in five months, Godwin can definitely return from ACL surgery in eight months. Nobody I know works harder in the gym than I do. I don’t personally know Chris Godwin, but I have a feeling, he’s no slouch. I’d be shocked if he isn’t ready by week one and I’ve always said that.
July 9th, 2022 at 8:57 am
I told you Booger didn’t know what he was talking about. But you had to keep referencing him as if he’s the actual team doctor in order to keep the drama up.
July 9th, 2022 at 9:29 am
Let’s not rush CG. We need him healthy later on. Let Gage fill in for the meantime.
July 9th, 2022 at 10:24 am
DO NOT RUSH IT!!!!!
July 9th, 2022 at 2:17 pm
In Dr Booger’s defense, his diagnosis is coming from the perspective of a fat guy that was getting surgeries twenty(+) years ago. Medical procedures and recovery science have improved exponentially since then. Back when he played it definitely would have taken his fat arse until at least November to recover from a knee injury.
July 9th, 2022 at 5:28 pm
Who knows for sure, but I sure do find it funny that all the negative nanny’s were predicting that Godwin was not going to be good at all this year or at least not play until after Thanksgiving.
They are pretty quiet on this thread today.
