Tom Brady Creates Rift Between Podcast Co-Hosts
June 28th, 2022One of the more interesting football podcasts out there is “Unbuttoned,” hosted by former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms.
Simms is not afraid to offer an opinion. He may ruffle feathers and get folks peeved at him, but Simms says what he thinks and Joe appreciates that. Also, Joe likes observations from a guy that worked on the staff of Bill Belicheat.
Additionally, it’s cool when Simms relays information from his old man Phil.
Simms’ co-host on the podcast is a former quarterback as well, Paul Burmeister of NBC Sports. Burmeister never made it to the NFL but he did play for Iowa. And like his co-host, Burmeister has learned to be direct. Subbing for Peter King in this week’s “Football Morning in America” column, Burmeister slapped around Simms.
Burmeister was irked that in Simms’ recent top-40 quarterbacks, he had the guy who led the NFL in passing last year, Tom Brady, listed as the No. 8 quarterback.
Tom Brady at 8? I’d have him higher. His combination of conviction and talent still wins the play most times. Chris sees a deficiency when the pocket starts to collapse around Brady, and Chris feels Brady’s reaction in that moment is not as good as those ranked ahead of him. That’s a valid point. But I think Brady’s decision making and fastball are still elite, and to me he’s a top 5 QB.
Simms is nitpicking here. OK, so Brady may have flaws when the pocket collapses. Yeah, he looked human against the Rams in the first half when the offensive line was getting its arses handed to them.
Then the Bucs adjusted and Brady came this-close to a comeback for the ages.
The greatest quarterback of all-time leads the league in passing with over 5,000 yards at 44 and you put him at No. 8? Com’ on, Chris.

Simms has been hyper critical of Brady for years. Simms has a entertaining podcast for sure but Brady is a top 5 QB in the league no doubt about it.
June 28th, 2022 at 11:35 am
I disagree. Brady is a top 1 QB in the league. While he is not movable compared to others, he is much more intelligent. I wouldn’t trade him for any other QB.
June 28th, 2022 at 11:36 am
What qb DOESN’T look deficient when the pocket collapses?
June 28th, 2022 at 11:42 am
Yea mahomes had the same issue in the Super Bowl when the pocket collapsed and most quarterbacks do so kind of a dumb argument
June 28th, 2022 at 11:44 am
Chris Simms always seemed like a guy who felt he didn’t get the “respect” he felt he deserved due to his last name, when the fact is he probably wouldn’t have the job he’s doing now w/o Phil Simms being his dad.

Ask Mahomes what happens when pòcket collapses!!! Just check his SB game against the Bucs…..
Every QB is in trouble on that situation…..
I like Simms as an analyst, but this one is simply ridiculous!!!

Bucs fans: NEVER LISTEN TO A WORD THAT COMES OUT OF CHRIS SIMMS MOUTH.
HE ONLY HAS A JOB BECAUSE OF HIS DADDY, PHIL.
HE IS WORSE THAN SKIP BAYLESS. DONT BELIEVE ME?

Another Chrissie pass batted down at the line of scrimmage!
June 28th, 2022 at 1:05 pm
Agree with RPK, Joe, do not connect this guy with the Belichick staff. He is too bad to survive in the staff of the Patriots. You can mistakenly rank Brady as low as 10 one year, but this guy ranks Brady below 8 for around 6 years with 3 SBs. It is crazy!
June 28th, 2022 at 1:15 pm
brady is and always has been the number 1 qb in the league. He will be until he hangs em up.

Brady has functional mobility. He has the greatest pocket awareness and movement in the history of the NFL. He knows how to evade sacks by making subtle movements in the pocket. Ask some DL in the league and they will tell you their frustration trying to get to him. That elite pocket movement is one of the reasons that he’s still in the league. Yes, he doesn’t really make plays out structure, but I see a lot of these QBs leave the pocket too quick after their first read isn’t open. Brady’s fast processing speed allows him to make decisions quicker, so he doesn’t always have to bail from the pocket. Simms also has some underlying hate of Brady. He’s one the talking heads like Shannon Sharpe who love contrarian hot takes involving anything with Brady.

Chris Simms is a dope. Listening to him speak English, makes you wonder how he graduated middle school. Correct GOB if he’s wrong, but since Simms started enlightening us with commentary, he’s never had Brady ranked as the #1 QB in the league. He’s besties with the coach in SF. So much so, that he has his initials tattooed on his leg. Simms told the world for weeks that Mac Jones would be picked by the 9ers. He’s not to be believed, or paid attention to. When you rupture your spleen, does it destroy the cerebrum too?

You Are What Your Record SAYS You ARE!
G.O.A.T!!!
June 28th, 2022 at 2:09 pm
Simms has been a chronic Brady hater for years
June 28th, 2022 at 2:16 pm
Why would anyone pay attention to what Simms says? Look at the list RPK posted. Simms also told us that his bestie would draft Mac Jones. Are the spleen and cerebrum connected? Maybe that top button is cutting off the blood supply to his brain.

Sorry, double post, same idea
June 28th, 2022 at 3:08 pm
As others have astutely pointed out, Simms has a long, festering dislike of Tom Brady. I think it’s a marketing gimmick so that Simms can differentiate himself from the other talking heads. I know this seems petty, but has anyone else ever noticed how Simms looks like he’s sucked on a sour lemon, or that he feels pained talking football to a general audience?
June 28th, 2022 at 3:11 pm
Only question I have for Mr. Simms is….if you have one game to win or your season’s over, who do you choose over Brady? And he doesn’t panic or try to do too much if the pocket collapses. Stats don’t win games and he’s perfectly fine with throwing the ball away or securing the ball and taking a sack if no other option. He knows he’ll have more plays so he doesn’t try to be Superman on every snap.
June 28th, 2022 at 3:19 pm
Rankings are foolish.
June 28th, 2022 at 3:26 pm
If I meet Phil sims on the street I’ll whip it out and pee on his shoes.
June 28th, 2022 at 3:27 pm
Oh, it’s Cris Sims.
June 28th, 2022 at 3:29 pm
Who cares what his name is. I wonder what names his wife calls out in the night?
June 28th, 2022 at 4:59 pm
Every quarterback has problems against the pass rush when the pocket is breaking down. Obviously Mahomes, Josh Allen and a few others that have the legs to run are viewed as doing better but the reality is Brady steps up and moves around the pocket as well as anyone still
June 28th, 2022 at 6:32 pm
I like Chris despite his association with that pompous, holier than thou, make believe artist that founded pft, but his lists are worse than that nitwit Priscoe’s.
June 28th, 2022 at 8:07 pm
Sure, other QBs can make plays once the pocket collapses, but superior NFL quarterbacking is and always will be about throwing from the pocket. We’ve heard this nonsense for years about how the running QB is the wave of the future. The league always figures these guys out.
Josh Allen is a bit of a different animal though. His size and running ability make him very difficult to defend. He’s like Big Ben, but much much faster. I can’t wait to what see how Belichick defends him this year
June 28th, 2022 at 9:23 pm
Chris Simms is a lightweight… He was as fragile as a China doll. He hates TB12 for being able to take a hit without needing major life saving surgery… Lol
Chris – you have no spleen… We get it. Get over it little guy.
June 29th, 2022 at 5:45 am
I think the criteria on which Simms ranked him #8 makes a ton of sense. His QB rankings are based on if all 40 QBs played on an average team with average O-line, average receivers and RB and an average defense supporting them. I see his point that Josh Allen would be the most productive in any setting. I also see his point with Burrow, Herbert and Stafford. I would still put Mahomes behind Brady.
June 29th, 2022 at 7:09 am
Simms is bias and big-headed which clouds his judgment
June 29th, 2022 at 11:07 am
LOL, Before you go and be critical of Chris Simms, be aware that it says in the “Football Bible” “No Greater Love can a Man have, as one who gives his Spleen, for his Team!
June 29th, 2022 at 1:14 pm
Yeah I mean if you HAD to win the whole thing this year and could pick any quarterback you want, name seven QB’s you’d rather have that would put him at #8.
June 30th, 2022 at 12:19 pm
Simms, if playing today, wouldn’t even be in the top 20. Easy to judge from an armchair while watching highlights. You all ready played yourself out of one career. When Brady retires and steps into the broadcast booth.. it will be TWO careers…
