A football thought made rookie DL Logan Hall smile.
Bucs personnel executives often talk about finding players who love football.
The more Joe listens to rookie DL Logan Hall, the more Joe thinks Jason Licht drafted one of those football-crazed dudes at No. 33 overall this spring.
Joe asked Hall last week about whether the team is coaching him up at all to rush off the edge, and if he’d like to do that.
Hall replied that getting after quarterbacks off the edge isn’t on his plate yet, but he flashed a big grin when he said he’d like to do it.
“I would love to have the opportunity to rush off the edge. I feel like I’m athletic enough to do so,” Hall said. “But I don’t see that. If it does come to arise, then, you know, I’ll be excited to do it.”
Many draft gurus noted all winter that Hall has the talent to be an edge rusher, not only an inside beast. He was versatile in college and he’s got a lot of explosion for a 6-6, 283-pound guy.
Joe gets that Hall was picked for his inside rushing ability and the Bucs will need that. However, Todd Bowles would be crazy not to at least see what Hall can bring off the edge. It would be a shame to figure out that he could be a quality edge rusher after the Tom Brady era is over.

Let’s let him adjust to being an NFL D-lineman first before we start trying to make him a gadget player. I mean, if he’s a quick learner and can take it all in and be effective, eventually I could see it… But they need him to become a dominant interior player ASAFP.

They’ll coach him up , he’ll get to show his game , if he can flash consistently towards the second half of the season, that would be great!

I think they’ll move him around, trying to find his sweet spot. I don’t see him as a traditional 3-4 anchor. He’s definitely gained some weight, which will help. He should be able to play a bunch of different techniques. On obvious passing downs, they will probably kick him inside. He played at a much lighter weight in college, so it’ll be interesting to see how he adjusts to the pro game, with the added bulk. It’s a massive jump.

They drafted him to be a down D lineman. His flexibility to possibly go outside is a bonus.

Todd Bowles is sort of a “Mad Scientist” when it comes to defensive innovation, and is always trying unconventional stuff.
It is important to his schemes to ascertain all his players strengths and weaknesses, so you can bet that Todd will try him outside, sooner then later.

He’s a beast. I expect more from JTS. He is so fast and athletic also. Gotta see how Lavonte looks game one but could another monster front seven if we can stay somewhat healthy.

Neither do I. Still convinced that they drafted him with the idea of moving him around. How much of each will probably depend first & foremost on how effectively he plays the run at the various positions. That’s still Todd Bowles priority when it comes to players getting field time.
IF he was playing NFL 3-technique at his college playing weight (260 lbs at 6’6″) he’d have a lot of difficulty holding his gap. Everything says that he beefed up to 280 lbs or so for the Combine & now NFL, but there’s still the question of how well he can carry that weight. And my gut tells me they’ll want him to put on even more in due time IF they want to use him more inside. Watching his development will be interesting, but it’s all just a big guessing game right now.

He’s gonna be very versatile, thats why I wanted him, especially at 6’6 with those long arms. Hicks replaces Suh, and Hall can eventually replace JPP while giving Hicks a rest at times.
Bowles has a lot to work with. We did a fantastic job with our draft and offseason signings.

He was drafted to play 3 tech DT. He’ll rush off the edge on occasion, but he’s a DT.

Hall is initially goin to be tasked with controlling the A gaps along with Vita, Hicks, & Nacho. Especially in 3 man fronts, Hall will probably be the 3T when Vita is at the nose and coach Bowles will run those twists to try to get either of the 3 DLmen in a 1on1 matchup. Bowles’ 3-4 is traditional in name only and there alot of the smart, subtle nuances to how he applies his DL to disguise and generate pressure. It’ll be fun to see if Hall can get a rep or two in camp as an OLB, but he’s going to make his money(and biggest impact) bullying interior OLmen.

Hodad & Dooley … We all know what Bucs ‘said’ they drafted him for (primarily DT), but I still don’t buy it. I think that’s why they signed Hicks, and I’m still betting they’ll sign another DT before the season starts (hopefully Suh). However, time will tell.

Like you said it’s all a guessing game, but it’s not like there aren’t hallmarks of a Bowles lead defense that have stayed consistent over his NFL tenure. Coach likes to generate pressure from the inside out with and uses that to allow the rest of the front 7 to create mismatches. Not saying Hall isn’t capable, but he’s got to establish himself as a DT before we can start hypothesizing where else he can be effective. The fact that one of Halls’ few negatives is that he’s got the tendency of playing a tad too high at times with is pad level and his best move being a bull-rush, he’s going to need to improve that before we start seriously talking about plugging him in at OLB and being a difference maker is all I’m saying.
