Donovan Smith Thinks He’s A Pro Bowler

June 9th, 2022

Donovan Smith

He trying to get the real Donny fired up on camera.” — Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith, June 8, 2022.

Yes, Donovan Smith thinks he got hosed/snubbed/screwed when it came to Pro Bowl selection for the 2021 season.

The Bucs allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL and sent three offensive linemen to the annual game in Las Vegas; Smith wasn’t one of them.

Asked about whether he was worthy yesterday, he uttered the above quote and then laughed. “Definitely a snub,” Smith added, before saying he wants that Pro Bowl love before his career is through.

Smith said he would make sure reporters and fans had the ammunition this season to lobby for him to get a Pro Bowl honor.

So was Smith worthy of the Pro Bowl last season? Joe doesn’t think so, but that doesn’t take away from Smith’s strong play for an elite offense. No quarterback has been sacked less than Tom Brady over the past two seasons.

Fans can point to Smith’s struggles, but the Bucs offense would not be the aerial machine it is if Smith was average.

I thought he was pretty damn solid.
I don’t know about pro bowl.

  2. dmatt Says:

I disagree. With or without Smith the offense would still be the aerial machine. Folks like Wirf, Marpet, n especially Jensen kept that engine running like a hemi last year. Smith on the other hand played mediocre last year n over the past several years. Saints player/s lick their chops when lined up across from Smith, because they know he’s passive n soft. Therefore, until he proves he can stop the Saints Cam Jordan n his posse, I’ll considered Smith average at best.

  3. Casual Observer Says:

Smith didn’t look stellar in the Rams loss – just saw again on the tube. Maybe just an off game.

  4. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Rarely does Donovan Smith misses a game or play. One of the most durable olinemen in the NFL. With that said, he is both consistent in the run or pass but not quite elite status. Definitely a top 10 LT and closing in top 5.

  5. mark2001 Says:

Consistency is the key. When he is on, he is a superior LT. But Pro Bowlers and All Pro players don’t occasionally show plays with less effort.

  6. Daniel Says:

Smith was terrible in the Rams game, but Von Miller makes lots of good LTs look bad.

  7. Allbuccedup Says:

Hes ok but its time to start looking for hes replacement in 2023 or 2024 hes getting to expensive for an average left tackle.

  8. dmatt Says:

Let’s set the record straight. If former Bucs Donald Penn was on the current Bucs roster while in his prime, this would be the top nastiest OL in the nfl. And, Penn would have about 5 pro bowls. He played at all pro level but was black balled while playing on the worst OL in the nfl back 2006-2014. I’d like to see Cam Heyward trying to beast mode him as he does DSmith. Penn was agile, mobile, n hostile.

What does the resident expert, Dooosh, have to say about The Durable One?

  10. BridleOaksBuc Says:

Jim Miller and Pat Kerwin broke down DS’s play from last year. When compared with all of the other LT’s in the NFL, he is actually very average. Definitely not Pro Bowl material.

  11. Stu Says:

    Pre Brady, NFW…
During the Brady Bucs era , who isn’t on the O-Line?
    Post Brady, we’ll see…

  12. DooshLaRue Says:

Durable Donnie wants to be a Pro Bowler?

Well…….I’d like to be a porpoise.

Rod Munch would like to be a fancy unicorn or perhaps a pair of GMC’s panties

    …..and Joe in Michigan?
He wants to be Dooosh’s buddy…….

Will these things happen just because we want them to?

    Probably not……..

But I suppose we can all keep dreaming…..

  13. Buccos Says:

    It’s good to have goals.

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

If he played in the usfl
    Dudes tripping

  15. PassingThru Says:

He’s a good LT, but Pro Bowler is definitely a stretch goal.

His collapse against the Rams left a lot to be desired. Even though it was against a healthy Von Miller, he’s going to have to do much better than that going forward.

  16. Joe in Michigan Says:

Doosh: With friends like you, who needs enemies? Hahaha

  17. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ^^^^^
    😀

  18. David Says:

He has been extremely solid for years. The last few years he has become a top 10 left tackle. His biggest concern has always been extremely fast pass rushers like Von Miller. But… Extremely fast sac machines usually give every tackle problems

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

Yeah- in the last 2 seasons, he’s playing at a pro bowl level.
Hes always been good. Now, he’s playing great.
Get him in the Pro Bowl- he deserves it!

  20. Buczilla Says:

Not a pro bowler, but still a good player. He’s also far and away one of the best offensive linemen that we’ve ever had, which kinda speaks to how sad our history with them has been.

  21. Eckwood Says:

At times he is !! against the Rams he wasn’t even 2 nd team NFc South …… watch the tape of your last game, be humble and be quiet …….. dude you might have won the first two min of the round decisively but you got knocked down twice and barely got back to your corner ……… Cut it how ever ya want You Lost the Round !!

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

Show him the replay of the Rams playoff game, that should humble him.

  23. DoooshLaRue Says:

Someone needs to put together a YT “highlight” reel of all of Durable Donnie’s blunders.
I’m guessing it would be a 20-30 minute video.

There is a funny one where a coach tears into him pretty good about poor technique.
    Son!

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

I see some of you want a PERFECT left tackle.
Same bunch that hated Donald Penn.
Ive said it before, but still true
Some people complain about O- linemen, to look knowledgeable.
Plus its hard to prove the critics are full of BS.
Qbs, Wrs, RBs, etc have volumes of stats- to show how they are doing
Not many stats in O-linemen. Easier to throw critiques their way.

Donovan Smith is playing at a probowl level.
He should have been a Probowler last year.
If you dont see that, then you dont know what you are looking at.

  25. DoooshLaRue Says:

I liked Donald Penn, so you’re theory is garbage.

Durable Donnie isn’t nearly as good as you guys think he is.
