History Says Todd Bowles Wouldn’t Hesitate To Cut Ryan Succop
June 6th, 2022Todd Bowles lived his own kicker circus when he was head coach of the Jets.
It wasn’t as bad as the Bucs’ historic Ringling Brothers run, but it was hardly smooth and typical sailing during his four-year stint.
Bowles’ good veteran kicker when he got the Jets job in 2015 was Nick Folk (before Folk tortured Bucs fans). Folk got hurt midway through that 2015 season and Bowles and the Jets pulled kicker Randy Bullock off the street and he was very solid. Heck, Bullock is still in the league.
But in 2016, Bowles went back to Folk and had kicking ups and downs before claiming kicker Jason Myers off waivers following the 2018 preseason. Myers was given the starting job and whaddya know, Myers made the Pro Bowl for Bowles and has become one of the most accurate kickers in the history of the game.
The point here is that Bowles knows that no-name kickers like Myers shine every year in the NFL. Myers was out of Marist College and cut his professional teeth in the Arena Leauge.
Bucs Super Bowl kicker Ryan Succop is 35 years old and didn’t kick a 50 yard field goal last year. He is set to earn about $4 million this season if he makes the team. Young José Borregelas lurks as Succop’s inexpensive competition in camp. He was on the Tampa Bay practice squad last season and was honored as 2020’s top college kicker.
GM Jason Licht has talked about how he wants competition, and Succop told Ira Kaufman he’s expecting a kicking war.
Whatever the kicker decision is, it very well could come down to Bowles going with whom he’s most comfortable.
And Joe doesn’t not think Bowles would flinch at calling on the untested guy, especially if it meant more salary cap cash to chase a pass rusher or linebacker depth.

$4 million for mediocre with a weak leg?
What?
It’s Borregelas’s job to lose as long as he doesn’t pull a Gay.

Cobraboy
“pull a Gay”…..I saw what you did there….
I agree…..we save $3mil and get much younger…….go with Jose…

What I wanna know is: did BA get to keep using his golf cart at practice/OTAs?
June 6th, 2022 at 10:21 am
Succup’s as good as gone.
June 6th, 2022 at 10:37 am
Anything more than 2 mil is overpaying a kicker.
June 6th, 2022 at 10:40 am
Jose for nothing please !!!
GoBucs!

Cut em and get another veteran pass rusher in here Floyd or Trey flowers would be a good addition for depth i believe Floyd would be d dominant pass rusher him and Tryon can split reps lol

I think Raachad White will be wearing the #3 jersey by week 1 of the regular season.

Too many games are won or lost by a field goal or a missed extra point. Got to go with who is the most reliable regardless of cost. If the most reliable kicker costs $4M, so be it. That’s a drop in the bucket when you look at the big picture.

We will almost certainly have two new kickers this year. Pinion will obviously be cut too due to the drafted punter.
June 6th, 2022 at 11:47 am
Personally, I miss BA already. But…so long as Bowles runs a good Defense, then Brady will take us all the way this year.

A punter could easily go on the Practice Squad. I doubt Pinion will be cut before the season starts…but if he does poorly or gets injured? You are possibly right.

People have already forgotten our kicking woes of a few years ago…wow. Replacing a good kicker is not as easy as you people seem to think.
June 6th, 2022 at 12:15 pm
You don’t draft a punter to then put them on a PS….especially when you can save several million…..And, this punter is good…..can kickoff…….
We have another punter already on the PS….
Pinion is history

I’m hopeful that Bowles can teach his defensive backs what their assignments are in zone coverage, and that maybe Cooper Kupp should be covered by someone.
June 6th, 2022 at 12:56 pm
Luis Aguilar of the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars has not missed one kick FG or PAT. I like kickers that do not miss much.
June 6th, 2022 at 1:17 pm
I hear Roberto Aguayo is still available.
June 6th, 2022 at 1:25 pm
LOL, Todd Bowles would cut his own Mother, if it meant improving our team.
Unless this new kicker really screws up, I think Succop is as good as gone, simply because of his salary.
June 6th, 2022 at 1:32 pm
@AlabamaBucsFan, BlahahHa BlahahHa, good one.
June 6th, 2022 at 1:35 pm
Succop future depends on Borregales present simple as that.
If Borregales show stability and good leg, Succop will be gone….
June 6th, 2022 at 2:04 pm
Succub failed us last year vs rams…I’m open toa competition may the best man win.
June 6th, 2022 at 2:41 pm
We gotta save money….we didnt draft a punter with our 4th who can also kick a FG.
Adios Ryan.
June 6th, 2022 at 3:31 pm
(without a reason) Jeeze, i hate the way i cant finish statements sometimes
June 6th, 2022 at 4:49 pm
I can understand looking to cut costs, but how many games did we lose because of Succop? Dont get cute on this one. This franchise has been burned on the kicker carousel. Would be on brand though. This offense has been waaaay too successful to have to split hairs over a decision to kick 40+ yards and letting the GOAT be the GOAT.
June 6th, 2022 at 4:54 pm
Joseph could have beaten out Succup this year but I’m not so sure Borregales has that much of a chance. I believed he could before OTA but he’s not performed well so far. Especially the pressured No time out hurry up attempts. I wish him luck though it would be nice to be able to come away with points outside the 35s.
June 6th, 2022 at 7:55 pm
Succop was SOLID every time he needed to come up big. How soon we forget kicker hell. Don’t screw this one up Bucs
June 6th, 2022 at 8:08 pm
Kicker Hell remembrance still exists in the pit of my brain. It still rises up its horns instead of the goal posts. I can’t get it out of my head yet.
June 6th, 2022 at 9:21 pm
Succop is nothing special. Ought to be able to replace him.
