Bucs Sign DE Akiem Hicks

UPDATED: 2:15 p.m. – In what is pretty much the door closing on Ndamukong Suh, and Jason Pierre-Paul, too, the Bucs signed a defensive end today.
That man is former Pro Bowler Akiem Hicks, who spent the past six years in Chicago.
Joe is pretty sure now that JPP is gone. The fact rookie DL Logan Hall wears JPP’s No. 90 is a dead giveaway.
And even if the Bucs wanted to bring back Suh, they likely cannot afford to. Per NFL Network, Hicks has a one-year contract that will pay him up to $10 million.
Hicks, 32, was limited to nine games after multiple short-term injuries last season. He had 3 1/2 sacks, which followed the same sack total in 2020 when he played in 16 games. At 6-4, 335 pounds, Hicks and Vita Vea will make quite an inside duo.

So the possibility is that maybe Suh still wanted to start but they want Logan to start and therein lies the problem. Now signing Hicks allows him to come off the bench and the young guy gets the nod. Let the young men play and let these older guys get out the way.

I realize many folks here loved Suh, he worked his posterior off every season, for every franchise. I respect that sentiment, it’s part of being a fan.
Hicks is the more disruptive player, as long as he can remain upright. By rotating his snaps with Logan Hall, Akiem Hicks will increase the likelihood that he’ll be around for the postseason. This is a strong move by Licht.

Suh played very well against the Rams in the playoffs, but was really hurting the Bucs run defense this past year. The Bucs got a solid upgrade in Hicks.

Money is tight. I still hope for a cheap, ring-chasing vet at OLB as I project JTS to be wet behind the ears this season. He needs to process the game, develop moves beyond a speed rush, and fight for leverage with his hands. It’s a tall order, so I hope that Licht can find a way to hedge the bet.
A vet CB would be nice, too, just in case. The only guys left are older, cheap vets; there isn’t much talent on the open market.

Great. Now people can stop clamoring for Suh and JPP. The great teams, like the Patriots, know when to move on from players. That was our mistake. The key to signings like this is not to get better, but to maintain while getting younger.

Solid move. Suh was one of my favorite Bucs even though he didn’t play with us for a long time. Bittersweet for me since I’m glad that we got Hcks, but sad that we are losing Suh.

MEH, 2018 was some time ago, but I guess we’ll see what we’re getting from Hicks because he hasn’t played next to a Vita Vea the past 3/4 seasons. Not as thrilled about this as others, but I’m guessing time will tell how Hicks fits into the rotation. Just sucks to sign a guy and mutter in the same breath “hope he stays healthy” but thats just me

As I said earlier, Hicks would sign for less than Suh, who I figured was worth $3 million to $4.5 million, tops. This is an excellent signing in terms of value.
Let’s hope Licht can sign Trey Flowers (if he passes the physical) on a super-cheap, incentive-based contract. He carries a high injury risk, but he’s outstanding when he can suit up.

I’ll root for him like I do every Buc, but we’re playing with fire if we think that Hicks can replace Suh. Replace McLendon? Definitely. Replace Suh? Just can’t see it.
Suh gave us 49 games over the 2019-2021 stretch … 100% availability … PLUS he was a major factor in all 6 of our playoff games. Regular season: 14.5 sacks, 30 QB Knockdowns, 26 QB Hurries, 6 PD, 23 TFL, 64 solo tackles plus 48 assists. Playoffs: 2 sacks, 8 QB Hits, 1 TFL, 8 solo tackles plus 10 assists. And in that 3-year stretch gave us 2,377 def snaps … 74.5% of our total in that span.
Hicks gave the Bears 29 games over that 2019-2021 stretch … 59.2% availability … PLUS played in the Bears’ 1 playoff game. Regular season: 8 sacks, 25 QB Knockdowns, 15 QB Hurries, 1 PD, 13 TFL, 59 solo tackles plus 25 assists. Playoffs: 0 sacks, 2 QB Hits, 0 TFL, 3 solo tackles plus 3 assists. And in that 3-year stretch gave the Bears 1,291 def snaps … 42.4% of the Bears’ total defensive plays in that span.
Spin it any way you like, Suh was the more productive player in these last 3 years. And in the process, he helped raise the level of performance of our entire defense. And especially the run defense: #1 in 2019; #1 in 2020; #3 in 2021. We just got rid of the wrong player IMO, and I really hope it doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.

I’m going to guess that means close to min veteran with per game bonuses and stat bonuses that would count against next years cap. If I’m right, then it doesn’t rule out resigning anyone else since this is just a min contract.
Personally, for the money, I’d rather have Suh back, but I guess they just couldn’t get a deal done.
As for JPP, I agree that it’s really unlikely that he’s back, but this signing shouldn’t have any impact on him.
At the same time, I do wonder about last offseason when everyone was brought back, and all the chatter with the ‘experts’ was that you needed some turnover, you actually wanted some fresh blood to keep your guys hungry. I’m not sure Suh and JPP are the two guys I’d target to replace if that’s an issue, however.

BUT – we really don’t know the details regarding Suh’s situation. This signing might be a sign that Suh is retiring. Or it could be a sign that Suh is going to sign elsewhere (like Las Vegas)…
I would rather have Suh back – BUT – Akiem Hicks is a very nice consolation prize especially this late in free agency.

Defense Rules – I’m with you, I don’t like this if it’s being spun as Hicks is an ‘upgrade’ or replacement for Suh… BUT PFF says it’s an upgrade! Go f yourself PFF…
Anywho, I wouldn’t count anything out. All we know is he has a contract “up to” $10m, and as I posted above, I’m going to guess, with his injury history, it’s a base contract (or close to it) with per-game bonuses. If my guess is correct, it means Hicks, and the way the vet min contract works, Hicks would cost as much against this years cap as a UDFA.
So I wouldn’t completely rule out anything. Who knows, maybe part of the sales pitch to Suh, is — hey, we got another vet in here so you won’t even have to play as many minutes, and we can give you series off.
To be clear, I don’t think that is going to happen, but that’s the positive spin.

If Hicks can stay healthy that’s fine, but I question his durability. Time will tell if he is an upgrade from Suh. Based on the numbers Suh is a better player, but who knows what kind of money Suh is demanding. We still need to sign Gronk and Julio.

If a dealio with Suh was not doable, Hicks is a credible fall-back.
A Vea/Gholston/Hall/Nacho/Hicks rotation is still a solid piece.

Suh will forever be one of my favorite Buccaneers. I liked his grit and smarts. I think the team will miss that, but I know little about Hicks beyond what I see on film. I do know he’s injury prone.

Hicks is a risk, so you offset that risk by rotating him with Logan Hall, who needs the snaps to develop. It’s a win-win situation. Hall gets developed, and the likelihood of Hicks being available for the postseason increases.
As I’ve opined in the past, Suh was a degradation-of-performance risk and his asking price was likely beyond what the Bucs could afford ($8 million to $9 million is a reasonable guess).

Hicks has had two pedal injuries in the last two seasons. Pedal injuries do not heal well into your thirties as an interior Dlineman. Suh will be missed on the field and in the locker room , but most of all for his availability which was always.

Licht has access to all the data cited on this thread – plus more. I sometimes doubt that he is less informed than some posters as is often implied. His track record in the past couple of years has been excellent. I trust him in this decision.

Biff Barker – We will see on Hall, but a ton of coaches get fired when they count on rookie defensive lineman, they rarely are any good in their rookie seasons. Also Hall was playing against guys he dominated physically in college, it’s not like he was playing the SEC, there’s going to be an adjustment period.
Of course, if I’m wrong, then fantastic! But the Bucs had better be realistic about what to expect, and they shouldn’t expect much.

Hicks can be disruptive. Says a lot that they spend the money on him and not Suh and JPP. If DSmith has room for a restructure, there is about 8-10 million there for Gronk. This is a good pickup, and especially if you are looking to move younger players into the mix.

My guess is Hicks plays 4 to 5 games and is shelved with an injury or three. Suh takes immaculate care of his body & has NEVER missed a game (including HS & college). I don’t care for this move much but hope I’m wrong. Unfortunate 93 wouldn’t sign with a major discount.

Great signing! More than I expected them to pay but we all knew they needed another DT. As far as those who prefer Suh, there are reasons for that but he was not the same player last year. He was worse against the run as the year went on and his pass rush became almost nonexistent other than two games.
This tells me they felt SUH lost it or maybe he did not want to be in as much of a rotation because I think the rookie will be rotating in a lot.
The only thing left is to get Gronk in

Hicks had 5 sacks in 8 games last year. He had an ankle and a touch of the Wuhan flu last year too. The ankle shouldn’t be a problem. As long as Hicks doesn’t have long covid, he’ll be more productive than Suh. My prediction is that Suh retires. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of dude that would play for less than 5-8 million guaranteed. We’re talking about the same guy who said the only reason he went to Miami, was the money. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have done the same, but you don’t say it publicly. Any team that pays him that kind of cash, gets what they deserve. Yes, he plays almost every game, but what are you really getting every game. He no longer commands a double team. In fact he was hardly doubled at all last year.

Everyone keeps talking about the money we saved by signing Hicks (apparently $2 mil + incentives), but no one has definitive figures for what Suh was looking for to play this year. Keep in mind that Suh will make $6.8 mil from the Bucs this year for starters (the cost of ‘kicking the can’ last season). We could’ve probably done a deal with him for close to that amount, and ‘kicked the can’ to 2023, just like we did last year. But noooo …
Folks also forget the JPP made $12.5 mil last year. Suh made $9 mil last year, and McLendon made $1.2 mil. So the 3 together made $22.7 mil last year, and were effectively replaced by a rookie (Hall) making $1.7 mil and now by Hicks (making $2 mil). That’s a ‘savings’ of $19 mil … that for all practical purposes went to pay for the new contracts for Vea & Davis. And in the process we MIGHT have given up a lot of DLine productivity that we’ll need to make another Super Bowl run. LOTS of risk involved in this path. Only time will tell though how it turns out. Here’s hoping for the best …

Actually Hicks had 3.5 sacks in 9 games last year GOB according to Pro Football Reference. And painting Suh as a mercenary who only plays for the money is kinda low. He left Detroit for Miami because the Lions didn’t want to pay even close to what his talent commanded at that point in his career (he gave them 5 years; made the Pro Bowl 4 of those 5 years & was voted 1st Team All-Pro in 3 of those years … THAT’S why Miami made him the highest paid DLineman up to that time). I would’ve jumped at that offer too, and I’ll bet you would’ve too. Personally I think he’s got a very good chance of making it into the HOF one day … and it could’ve been as a Buccaneer.

One can argue Suh stayed pretty healthy. Hicks is a good pass rusher. Jut
pray we can keep him healthy. If he stays healthy, we have more than Suhs replacement.

I’ve been one of the many in here calling for Hicks for months. Good job, Licht!
Now sign one more—Carlos Dunlap or Justin Houston. Then sign Eddie Goldman, Larry Ogunjobi if they check out medically, or Sheldon Richardson. Last resort, get Suh back, but only if he’s healthy.
If they do all of that, or make some trades with any unwanted guy, then it will begin to look positive. Until then, it’s still dicey.

Not feeling Gronk is coming back 😥. He doesn’t seem motivated to play. It’s impossible trying to keep up with Brady, maybe Hronk’s just had enough of the physicality. Wish him well if he doesn’t come back. GOBUCS!

the way to replace that is get another sideline to sideline speedster linebacker in here, as opposed to britt and minter
