If you like to read into Jason Pierre-Paul’s Instagram stories feed (he rarely posts anything on the platform but is very active in uploading videos on the stories feed), JPP is a master of cryptic messages. They may mean nothing. They may mean a lot. Only JPP knows.
So earlier this week, JPP had a series of still shots of his kids on the field of the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway after the Super Bowl doing confetti angels wearing his jersey.
JPP also had additional photos of his kids wearing his Bucs jersey, all at the Stadium of Dale Mabry Highway, for other Bucs games — making sure not to crop out images of the Bucs from the upper portion of the photo backgrounds.
In one image, JPP had a cryptic message saying, in so many words, his career may not be done yet.
His career may not be done but it sure appears his Bucs days are over.
It was sort of a dead giveaway that JPP is toast with the Bucs when he hauled an SUV full of baggage onto a private jet and departed Tampa on a Saturday afternoon not long ago.
While the plane hovered over the city, JPP had video of the view and hollered, “Bye-bye Tampa!” and then he showed himself laughing so hard he was bouncing in his seat. JPP then referenced the city as “ho'” and you may determine whatever you wish in what tense JPP used that term.
Shortly after Joe posted a link to the video, JPP deleted it. Hhhmmm?
Then when the Bucs drafted Logan Hall, the Bucs social media team twittered out the rookie’s new number. It was No. 90, which was (?) JPP’s number. When underwear football began, Joe was told by a member of the Bucs’ media relations staff not to make a firm conclusion on Hall’s number, though the staffer’s body language sure gave off the vibe to not hold your breath on JPP returning.
Joe brings all of this up because of the way Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett spoke about second-year outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka this week.
While Shaq didn’t mention JPP at all, the way he spoke sure sounded like JTS is the Bucs’ go-to pass rusher now opposite Shaq. He believes it is just a matter of time before JTS dominates and it could begin on opening day.
“I think Joe can be a double-digit sack guy every year,” Shaq said. “I’m excited for him. I see him put the work in. So it is just a matter of time for him to get out there, get comfortable with it on a play-in, play-out basis.
“It could be the first game, it could be the second game. I have faith in him that he will be making not just sacks, but forced fumbles, tackles for loss, [raising hell in] the passing game, he is really going to affect the game. It’s going to fun to play with him.”
Joe does know that Shaq isn’t just using underwear football-speak about a guy working hard (gee, a professional athlete being paid seven figures a year works hard, imagine). Not only has JTS bulked up, but he also stayed in Tampa all offseason to work on his craft rather than going back to his home on the west coast. For a guy finishing his rookie season, that’s commitment.
JTS also went to pass-rushing guru Brandon Jordan’s camp at Michigan State in an effort to raise his game.
Joe sure hopes this dedication results in opposing quarterbacks eating dirt on the very same field where JPP’s kids made confetti angels.

Shaq will now be playing on the right side (mostly) where he generated most of his 19 sacks in 2020 is awesome. Left tackles are usually the more atheletic of the tackles – Wirfs being the rare exception. Sooo now…lightning quick bulkier JTS can feast on right tackles!

Can’t speak for other Bucs’ fans, but I EXPECT JTS to have a much bigger year than he had last year. Double-digit sacks? You bet your bippy; he’s a 1st Rnd pick & better produce or we’ll be in serious trouble. With JPP, Suh & McLendon all gone, JTS & Hall have some very big shoes to fill.
Shaq himself has shown that he can’t carry a team, but he does do a good job of feeding when others take the attention off him. Vea will do that some, but Shaq NEEDS a beast over on the other side of the DLine to create the conditions for him to really excel. Shaq really blossomed in 2019 with 19.5 sacks in 16 games, largely thanks to Vea & Suh both also playing 16 games, and JPP getting in for the last 10 games that season.
Shaq’s sack total fell off considerably in 2020 (to 8 sacks), I think largely because Vea was hurt (only played in 5 games), although Suh & JPP both gave us 16 games each (and 15.5 sacks between them). Last season saw Shaq’s sack total rising to 10; Vea was in there for 16 games, Suh got 17 games, but JPP was hurting the whole season (only got 12 games). Point being … Shaq NEEDS those other beasts to be on the field a bunch for him to hunt & maximize his productivity.
Like most others, I’m HOPING that JTS is the answer, but as many have said … ‘Hope isn’t a strategy’. He (and Hall) will need to prove it on the field or we can kiss any hopes of winning the 2022 SB hasta la vista.

JPP, Suh, thank you for your service. Out with the old, in with the new. Ten years from now, or sooner, we’ll be saying how could they let Hall, and Tryon go? I’ve been watching football for 60 years, it has always been thus. Like they said in Starship Troopers, I’ll tolerate you until I can replace you with someone better.

JTS had some obvious deficiencies I noticed. He’s still very raw. It’s a great sign he’s working on them. First, he needs to develop more moves. A one trick pony is easy to defend. He has trouble getting leverage, and gets in trouble when he stands up. He also must work on his run defending, or teams will simply run straight at him. He was something of a one year wonder in college. Like I said, it’s important he is working to get better. If he can give the bucs 8-10 sacks, it would instantly justify the pick.

I don’t think ALL the pressure is on JTS/Hall to perform, but if we aren’t bringing Suh & JPP back that’s a clear shot at more opportunities for guys like Benning Potoe’a, Cam Gill, Pat O’Connor, and Elijah Ponder to possibly etch out bigger roles for themselves on defense to possibly be the 2022 Nacho or Anthony Nelson. Granted Hall & JTS are the guys because of their draft status the underneath guys I mentioned earning their way to more snaps alleviates some the pressure on those two top picks. Also, Deadrin Senat seems to be the 8 year younger replacement for McClendon and I think once the pads come on we’ll be able to gauge better who’s rising out of that bunch. Should be interesting to watch how that situation unfolds between now and the regular season.

The doubters of JTS are the kind of people who condemn rookies to bust status if they don’t dominate immediately. It’s dumb. JTS did a lot of good things as a rookie, and he still has room for growth. He was raw. We knew that going in, but he still played pretty well. So, the arrow is definitely pointed up. He’s put some more bulk on his frame and he has a year of experience in the system. He’s going to succeed.

If I were in Shaq Barrett’s cleats, I’d be talking Joe up, too, trying to get opposing offenses to shade their blocking toward taking Joe out of the play and freeing up Shaq a bit. Maybe I’m just being too smart for my own good, but that was my thought.

I wish him the best. He’s a Buc and a 1st rounder. Raw, doesnt shed blocks, weak against the run. OK rookie, it’s time to become a factor in this defense.
Maybe competition from Hall can help light a fire. Another innefective year and Hall may take his spot.

Exactly Biff. I’m not saying the kid is a bust by any means, but there’s a reason he wasn’t drafted until very late in round one. He only really produced for one year in college. That’s a red flag. If he works hard, he can overcome some of his deficiencies. I viewed him as more of a project, but what do you expect at the end of the first. When a talented pass rusher falls, it’s usually because of liabilities in the run game. If you can’t set the edge, it’s a problem

How could anyone be sold on a rookie pass rusher who seen limited action ? I swear half of you people just love to hear yourself find a negative thing to say. Why don’t we all just wait and see for ourselves ? I mean the coaches are obviously not worried about it. If they were they would have either brought JPP back or brought in someone else. As for Suh , I would love to see him back but on a team friendly contract. He’s ALREADY made over $30mil off the Bucs the last 3 years. I think a lot of you forget about William Gholston and Anthony Nelson. Not to mention June 1st is in a few days and that’s when a lot of teams dump good players to save cap $ and those players will want to be a part of what’s going on with our Bucs. Go Bucs

Warren Sapp does not like JTS because he feels that JTS can not win many 1 on 1 battles. That is because he lacked the strength to win against NFL Linemen.
So, I am happy to hear he has bulked up! IMHO, this is exactly what he needed to do.
I agree with @Defense Rules that Shaq Barrett needs a distraction on the other side of the line, so he can feast. He had that in Denver with Vonn Miller, and here in Tampa with JPP. With it looking like both Suh and JPP are gone, JTS is really gonna have to step up his game!

Suh,JPP. JTS lacks strength and doesn’t have the moves. He isn’t a double digit sack guy and this isn’t the year to hand over the keys to the defensive line to JTS and Hall. Big mistake Jason.

I expect him to take a big jump forward. He looked a little raw and indecisive because it was the first time he played in two years and he was learning a new defense, trying to figure out where to go all the time. This year he added weight to be better against the run and he should be quicker because he knows where to be. I have high expectations for him and Shaquille. One thing that will help tremendously is if VEA plays 70% + of the snaps.

It’s good to see JTS dedicating himself to getting better. The problem is that he was raw coming out of college, a long way from being a finished NFL pass rusher.
He’s still developing. Hall is going to need the same amount of time. Both are promising LONG TERM prospects.
That doesn’t give us much confidence for Brady’s short (one season) window. If they don’t hurry and sign some veterans for this short window, we’re going to have problems.

Must always be hard when your not wanted anymore. But it speaks volumes JPP isn’t with a team already. Perhaps the bycs made a low offer that’s justified but he just doesn’t have it anymore. I will always appreciate his passion and leadership but it’s time to move on. Thank you JPP 🌟 GO BUCS!

Don’t be surprise if Nelson is are starter and JTS is our 3OLB. Nelson is better at stopping the run and holding his lane. He shows great progress last season and this being his last year on his rookie deal I would be surprise if he gets 5-6 sacks. That’s not a knock on JTS as I do see a good future with him but he is still raw so I wouldn’t count on him getting 10+ sacks this season. I’m more hoping he can control his motor and hold on the run.
