Mike Tannenbaum Predicts A Big Year For Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

Former suit expects big year.
One reason Joe tosses in bed at night is the idea that the Bucs are banking on a whole lot of production from two players who have a combined experience of one full NFL season.
They are second-year edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and rookie tackle Logan Hall.
Gone are veterans Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh. To paraphrase a Toby Keith song, neither are as good as they once were. But a healthy JPP is a threat and Suh is a beast against the run, and as reliable as they come even if his pass-rushing may have slipped.
For Joe, that’s an awful lot of pressure on a couple of young guys.
But when it comes to JTS, former NFL general manager and current BSPN talking head Mike Tannenbaum, who co-owns The 33rd Team, is expecting a monster year.
How so? Tannenbaum expects JTS to be named to his first Pro Bowl this winter.
… On an extremely talented defense, Tryon-Shoyinka will have plenty of opportunities to rush 1-on-1 against a tackle or a guard. Last season, he had a pass rush win rate of 11.6%, and a 10.2% pressure percentage. Both the pressure percentage and the pass rush win rate were higher than Suh and JPP, by a significant margin. Along the defensive line, he finished 4th in pressures generated, and had the 5th highest pressure percentage on the 2021 Buccaneers. Pressures and pressure percentage are both statistically significant to future sack rate, which could bode well for Tryon-Shoyinka in 2022.
That is the first time Joe heard of those stats being a window into future play. Very interesting.
Joe will make this call right here and now: If JTS has a Pro Bowl season, not only will you see Shaq Barrett have a solid season, you will see the secondary play dynamite football.
And if all that happens, this Bucs team is going to win a sh!tload of games. That’s all there is to it.

I hope folks realize that the saints focus is to reclaim the division by any means necessary. They are stacking the deck so to speak. They have a top defensive line n secondary n have added two game changing vets n drafted a top wr so let’s not get the big head as if we have the division in our hands. I still have doubts about SMB n JDean. SMB sucks and n JDean is hit n miss, he’s inconsistent n often plays more like a rookie vs the 4 yrs he has under his belt.

Solid recap of Suh’s potential right there. He’s 35-years-old; although he may be a youngster compared to Tom Brady, he’ll still be the 2nd-oldest player on our team WHEN we re-sign him. And I suspect that DTs take a bigger beating on the season than most QBs do.
And yet, Suh gave us 6 sacks last year, his highest total since 2014 when he had 8.5 sacks with Detroit. Suh’s 6 sacks were 2nd on the team behind Shaq (10 sacks) on the year. And Suh contributed 19 QB pressures on the year, 4 more than Vea contributed (and Vea only made $18 mil). Not bad for an old man.
But IMO Ndamukong Suh provides much more than just numbers. He provides field LEADERSHIP and ATTITUDE. Same LEADERSHIP and ATTITUDE that Jensen provides on our OLine. And that’s incredibly hard to value, and even harder to replace. Rookies don’t replace that in Year 1.
Suh’s his own agent, and no one (except him) has any idea how many other teams have expressed an interest in his services. Neither he nor the Bucs has any urgency to re-sign him at this point (we don’t have the money YET and he doesn’t need the camp). Bucs passed on a full-time replacement for him in the draft intentionally (Hall isn’t Suh’s replacement). This is his home now; and this is where he’ll finish out his HOF career with 1 more Super Bowl notch on his belt. He’s a Buccaneer. Suh will be back.

Suh and Gronk’s future are linked by the salary cap trap. We will sign Gronk and offer Suh whatever is left. DR is right. Suh brings the “tude.
Bucs wont overspendfor Suh but a FA vet DT is a definate.
I hope Logan Hall has a better rookie season than JTS.

BTW, I can see all the Trask whining shows no sign of slowing down. For those struggling to recover, I’d reccomend a six pack or three of Bromosa ale and maybe a peek at Bob Kraft’s phone book.

JTS and I’m not sleeping on Anthony Nelson putting up some decent numbers this year as well. I would’ve loved for them to take a run at Melvin Ingram but it is what it is.

JTS sucks against the run. He runs around like an axe murderer who lost his axe. No Suh? This defense will get torched. Vita can’t play more than half a game. Need Suh, like many here have said.

Jts has all the tools…..hopefully, he improves as predicted…. I also believe that Suh will be back…..we have some more possible restructuring to do….

At the very least we should pick up 2 FA vets to replace Suh, McClendon & JPP

I believe Suh would still be an asset to the team… If the salary-cap-hell Saints can sign Matthew and Landry, we can sign Suh and Gronk. (JPP is a gamble, imo)

Concerned that JTS can not live up to the hype. He is a decent backup but just don’t think he is a run stopper or a bull rusher. Good speed but can he fight through blocks?

I mean JTS stayed in Tampa most of the year and has been training all off-season for this upcoming season with a pass rushing specialist and Anthony Nelson versus going home to Washington. That’s dedication!
If all that work can translate to the field I can see him making a huge jump this year! Especially as a pass rusher want to see double digits sacks. However, the biggest question mark will be his run game defense because he just runs wild sometimes and misses his assignment.
Let’s all remember he is young and missed a year of football before his rookie season last

And please just don’t point out to any position. Name the player you would have drafted at #64 as the Bucs’ GM. Anything else is just a rant for the sake of a rant.

TBBF … Salary CAP shouldn’t be an issue at this point, unless we opt to grossly overpay for Suh, Gronk or a possible 1-2 other FA additions. We’ve signed 4 draft picks already, so they’re counted in to our current CAP status ($12.7 mil available). The remaining 4 picks should only cost us $1 mil total (they’ll cost $4.6 mil but replace the bottom 4 in our Top-51 so that’ll save $3.6 mil).
We’re carrying Pinion AND Camarda as punters right now, as well as Succop AND Borregales as kickers. Almost surely 2 will get released by end of camp. IF Camarda does well, Pinion will probably be the one to go, saving us $2.9 mil. Personally I think Succop will weather the storm. Releasing him would save $1.7 mil, but we are shooting for the Super Bowl (going with 2 newbies as K & P would be scary).
Bucs will still need to restructure either D Smith or LVD to get where we need to go. That means committing to even more money (and years) for one or the other. My money’s on Donovan; this’ll be LVD’s last year (the wear & tear is taking a toll it looks like).

I think the generic overall gripe on Trask is he’s had zero impact. Zero. Zero passes, etc.
Almost any other player aside from a QB would have had more impact–perhaps a bust, perhaps not, or perhaps little impact. But zero impact is unlikely had it been any other position player. Any other player maybe could’ve helped last year & now we’d be hyped about a year two jump for our 2nd rounder.
I’m in the win now at all costs camp though.
If I were in the don’t screw the future totally camp, then perhaps Trask may not be a total bust yet…perhaps. Time will tell.

Here’s what i don’t like about these stats that look misleading, Suh is a tackle and they generally don’t create much sacks or pressure and an OLB would, and JPP played all year with a torn rotator, i sure hope JTS had more pressure’s/win rate than them.

You’re correct in regards to creating cap space. In terms of restructuring, it will have to be Donovan Smith. More likely than not, we’re looking at the twilight of LVD’s productive career.
I’d prefer Akiem Hicks, assuming that he’s available for a two-year deal in the neighborhood of something like $12 million total. I liked Suh, but the slippage was obvious last season. He doesn’t look like a $9 million per season player (2021) or an $8 million per season player (2020). At this point in time, he’s an above-average DT/DE that probably warrants a $4.5 million contract, despite the feelings of nostalgia among the fans. And he’s not committing, because any Licth offer is well below Suh’s pride threshold. The longer the team waits for Suh, the more likely some other GM will move on Hicks.
Honestly, even if Suh does sign for something north of $5 million, the Bucs will suffer from “Winner’s Curse”. I expect even more deterioration from Suh this season. While Hicks is a risk due to his injury history, it’s a safe bet that Suh will experience further decline if he plays this season.
I’d like to see Suh signed versus the front office doing nothing, but I hope you aren’t expecting 2019-vintage Suh and a contract offer of $8 million, he clearly isn’t that kind of player anymore. My hope is that Licht and ownership are looking into restructuring Donovan Smith and pursuing Hicks instead.

Suh played great in 2020. He even earned an 80 grade on PFF. In 2021 the slippage in play was real. He really was a shell of his former self and rated with a 49 which is replaceable. Even if the Bucs resign him I would spend more than 3-4 million and then still sign sheldon Richardson or Akeim Hicks for a stronger rotation.

I love when people jump to the conclusion of negative players will be in their second and third season like JTS, Darden, and Tyler Johnson. Especially the ones that say they will be lousy. Like the idiots that say cut Tyler Johnson after a great rookie year with a “drop” in the second year. JTS has put on some serious muscle mass from last year. Dean and SMB have shown me they do not have it (after three years). If we don’t sign Gronkowski, go find a good/great CB.

Lavonte David: 12 G, 97 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 FF. What is this wear and tear you speak of??? Of course the guy is getting older, be he’s a beastly leader type that could easily remain a solid starter on any team for 3+ years.

It’s LVD’s contract, which has only one year remaining. The only way to get cap space from LVD is to have him take a pay cut (nope, that’s not an option) or extend his contract for more years. The latter is not a good idea either as LVD will be 33 this season. LBs take a serious beating, and when the toll of the hits mount with age and use, they fall apart quickly.

OK maybe ‘wear & tear’ wasn’t the right descriptor. How about ‘LVD’s not the Ironman he used to be’? Better? Reality is that LVD’s lost a step (or more) and his biggest talents were instinct & speed-to-the-ball IMO. His instinct’s surely still there, but our defense is predicated on speed … sideline-to-sideline speed … from our LBs. I thought that Kevin Minter had good instincts too, but the speed just wasn’t there. Did you happen to notice any difference in LB play when he replaced White & when he replaced LVD? Ya, me too. And that’s MAYBE why they haven’t re-signed him. And he’s a full year younger than LVD, without as much ‘wear & tear’ on his body.

PassingThru…Im aware of the contract. Bottom line is he hasn’t shown any total downward spiral at 32. No need not to be able to resign him to a one-two year deal in 2023. I do guarantee he retires a Buc.
