History On Bucs’ Side Against Jameis-led Saints
May 16th, 2022Joe gets a laugh out of how Saints fans (and some Bucs fans) assume Jameis Winston having ACL surgery in November is no big deal and he’ll be a healthy quarterback for opening day and Week 2 against the Bucs.
In 2017, then-Houston quarterback DeShaun Watson tore his ACL in November. He made it back for 2018 opening day, but the Texans started 0-3 thanks to their offense averaging less than 20 points a game through that stretch. Watson threw seven interceptions in his first six games before settling into a good season with a very strong team.
The Goat himself, Tom Brady, came back on opening day 2009 from a September 2008 ACL injury. Brady threw a pick-6 in the opener against a bad Bills team and the Patriots averaged 17 points per game through Week 2 before Brady found a rhythm.
Carson Wentz admitted he wasn’t the same Eagles player all year in 2018, after his late-2017 ACL surgery.
And check out this quote from Carson Palmer, who has dealt with multiple ACL tears: “It’s all a feel thing. That confidence comes from how it feels to step into a throw or how it feels to really push off and explode off of that leg. It takes 18 months to where your knee feels somewhat normal again. It takes two years until you can’t really tell that you had surgery on it. So that first year, it just doesn’t feel right.”
Joe looks forward to betting soon on the Bucs to beat New Orleans in Week 2. Legions of people thinking/assuming Jameis’ knee will be just fine should keep the point spread in a good place.

Didn’t you see the video of Jameis juggling while riding a unicycle, he’s ready to go now.
May 16th, 2022 at 9:50 am
Best of my recollection, Saints seem to beat us no matter who is at QB.
May 16th, 2022 at 9:51 am
Unfinished business indeed, Bucs go 2-0 or at worst 1-1 against the Aints.
GO BUCS!!!!
May 16th, 2022 at 9:53 am
Might be mistaken, but when we lost to the Saints 9-0 at home last year I got the strange feeling that it was the Saints’ DEFENSE that we had an issue with. I’ve been wrong before (as my wife reminds me constantly), but when you don’t score any points, seems like it’s hard to win. Of course there are some who still blame the Bucs’ defense for giving up 9 points in that game, so there’s that.
May 16th, 2022 at 9:57 am
Man, good insight from Carson Palmer there.
It brings up mixed feelings about Chris Godwin and it makes me wonder how in the world Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and MCL on Christmas Eve in 2011 and then just 8 months later averaged 6 ypc and really had one of the best seasons ever by a RB.
Man how great would it be if CG is able to have a similar return as AD did in 2012? Time will tell.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:01 am
I read that Drew Brees is considering a return to Football, so we can not be sure it is Jameis we will face.
The Saints have not sat still, and have added 2 game changing receivers, in case no one has noticed.
They always give us trouble because they can bring pressure with just their front 4, leaving a ton of players to pass protect.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:02 am
Not worried about Jameis, just the Aints defense playing like the 85 Bears against us but then getting shredded by teams like Philly, ATL and the Giants
May 16th, 2022 at 10:08 am
Jameis is going to cook us I can already tell. He would have destroyed us and gone for 350 YDs and 7 TDs if Devin White hadn’t been instructed to take him out.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:15 am
Suh.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:17 am
@ChrisTucker
The Saints hope they have added two game changing receivers.
Do you really think either of those two new receivers are going to be any better than Russell Gage?
May 16th, 2022 at 10:21 am
Bucsdiehardfan, that’s just silly.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:21 am
Brees coming back to the Saints would be the best thing for the Bucs. Brees looked very done in his last year and that arm strength is not getting any better. I think Saints are better off trying to see if JW is their QB of the future. Saints have traded to much draft capital and their D alone will keep them from getting a top 10 QB needed to turn that franchise around!
May 16th, 2022 at 10:30 am
The same will be true for Godwin. I do not expect him to be fully recovered until well into the season, and not have a big impact until 2023.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:46 am
I watched the first saints game last year and Winston was doing nothing except running for first downs like crazy. Pass rush was flushing him out but there was no one in the middle level to pick him up. I swear they were designed plays cooked up by Sean Payton but made to look like scrambles. Then he gets hurt and their third string QB carves us up for the rest of the game. We have been getting out coached by Payton since gruden maybe even earlier. I hope it changes now that he’s gone but I’ll believe it when I see it
May 16th, 2022 at 10:51 am
Definitely not a Jameis fanboy but that cat seems to be built diferently especially mentally so I am not sure you can compare him to Palmer; I would expect Jameis to be the same on the field especially against the bucs and 100% for him to be scrambling how he did. Cannot stand the Saints, Falcons or Panthers and their fans.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:52 am
It won’t be Jameis. It’s going to be Brees.
May 16th, 2022 at 10:57 am
Well, the injury was to his leg and not his arm. He should be just fine throwing to Bucs defenders!
May 16th, 2022 at 11:02 am
I know Joe uses a quote from Carson Palmer that he did not feel right after his ACL surgery until 18 months after the injury. However, his football play was his best ever and well before 18 months.
Very fair point about Palmer but he also had a punishing running game that season to lean on. The Saints didn’t have that last season and it’s hard to expect it now. The guys you mentioned below were not quarterbacks.–Joe
Carson Palmer tears his ACL on November 2, 2014. In 2015, he played all 16 games. He threw for his most yards and TD’s ever and finished 2nd in the NFL MVP voting.
So, whether he felt right or not, he clearly had an impact that very next season.
Besides him other positive examples with short turnarounds are:
Jason Kelce – Center
Adrian Peterson – RB
Chris Harris – CB
JJ Watt – DL
Jeremy Maclin – WR
Jameson Williams – WR
Lindsay Vaughn – Downhill

‘Joe gets a laugh out of how Saints fans (and some Bucs fans) assume Jameis Winston having ACL surgery in November is no big deal.’
It’s obvious that those supporting JW will desperately grasp at anything to use as an excuse as to why he is no longer a BUST!….
All last season it was his eye surgery that ‘miraculously’ would make him accurate and dependable yet his coach call FAR less pass plays than the years before..
As long as the Saints foolishly stick with JW, I have a great feeling about the Bucs chances…. BUT If Dalton takes over, UGH!

Except when the Bucs were on the way to Super bowl LV……
May 16th, 2022 at 11:16 am
I would rather see Brees than Winston behind center. My wife could throw farther than Brees now, and she doesn’t know which hand to throw with.
May 16th, 2022 at 11:27 am
I don’t care who’s playing and who isn’t. Just beat them already. That 9-0 loss at home on national TV should be all the inventive these guys need to finally put the Saints in their place.
It was beyond embarrassing especially because it would’ve won them the South and doing it against your arch rival.
May 16th, 2022 at 11:34 am
No Payton no problem
May 16th, 2022 at 11:37 am
Who Dat Dat didn’t seen the last regular season game when we shot y’all out and there’s talk bout Brees coming back so we will definitely be looking at It
May 16th, 2022 at 11:48 am
@Aaron: Good luck bringing Brees back with the salary cap.
May 16th, 2022 at 12:06 pm
I wanted the bucs to address that secondary. You gotta be able to play some man coverage in this league. They got McCollum. Some corners out there still.
May 16th, 2022 at 12:07 pm
Aints Head Coach has 8 career wins as a Head Coach, without Payton making Bowles look silly I am not as worried about them.
Payton reeled Jameis in while he was healthy, Jameis being Jameis he will look Pro Bowl worthy for a few series then will look like he did here.

Bucs&Bolts: “No Payton no problem”
I kind of feel that way, too.
May 16th, 2022 at 1:32 pm
As Bucs fans, all we can hope for is the return of the brown bags for the Aints. Aint gonna happen this year, too much talent, but still one can hope.
May 16th, 2022 at 1:34 pm
Aints will always be the Aints
Took their franchise almost 30 years to win their first playoff game and almost 20 years to have a winning season
May 16th, 2022 at 3:11 pm
I mentioned a month ago that the Saints lost their best weapon and they would Not be the same. Maybe never again. That weapon I kept referring to was none other than Sean Payton. Their best weapon is indeed gone. I don’t think they will be a push over by any means but…….
Added weapons or not, 2 for 2 wins with him gone is certainly a possibility.
Then again with our neglected front 7 defense…….. hmm. Tough call.
GO BUCS!

Howard can’t think of another instance where pulling a player down from the back by the shoulder caused a knee injury. That was obviously a freak accident. Devin and Jameis are probably friends also.
If you want to see a textbook, coach-approved, thug-style knee capping job done right, then look at what PJ Williams did to CG14.
When you knee-cap you put your shoulder pad directly into the knee in the cross-hairs, Saints-bounty style. Pulling a guy down from the back has almost no chance of being an effective knee cap unless it’s a freak accident.
May 16th, 2022 at 4:42 pm
Bucs need to be super careful in this game. Keep your heads on a swivel.
A loss is better than losing another star to an intentional bounty hit, Saints style.
May 16th, 2022 at 6:02 pm
I wish Jameis well except against us.
May 16th, 2022 at 6:31 pm
Can you imagine being in ATM’s head when he read Brees might come back?
Like a horror movie…
May 16th, 2022 at 6:33 pm
I watched Doug Williams, Vinnie and Steve Young play for the Bucs. They were all awful imo. Awful. Then they leave the Bucs. I am worried about Winston, to tell you the truth. On top of history, he will have a HUGE shoulder chip when playing against us.
May 16th, 2022 at 11:23 pm
They’re a run first team. I trust the Saints to acclimate to their players
