How much of a difference can one wise and driven man make in the Buccaneers’ secondary?
Bucs fans are about to find out.
The top group for the miserable New York Giants through the past two seasons was its defense. New Bucs cornerback/safety Logan Ryan says that’s no coincidence.
Why? Because Ryan was playing there in all but one game, and racking up a load of tackles.
Ryan hosted a video recently for Pedigree pet food that hit on a wide variety of topics. One was film study.
The former All-State quarterback in New Jersey explained that struggles at Rutgers University playing defense led him to attack film study and treat it as the key to success. His approach hasn’t changed.
“Being a former QB, I started to study the game backwards, what a quarterback would see but on the defensive perspective. And I would communicate that with my teammates, and that was kind of what made me stand out,” Ryan said. “Whatever unit I play in, my unit tends to succeed. And I think the key of that is the information — and the information is film study. … … I feel like in football, the answers are out there and they’re in film study. If you can study for the test and you can did through the material, why would you not do it?”
Back at the NFL Owners meetings, Joe was hanging out with Ira Kaufman and talking to Titans head coach Mike Vrabel. Ryan played for Vrabel, who paid him a spectacular compliment.
Vrabel reflected that Ryan was one of the rare players he would allow to question the Titans’ defensive game plans and schemes, and Vrabel said he even welcomed if it was from Ryan. That respect was earned, Vrabel said, because Ryan put in such an elite level of preparation and devotion.
With Ryan in a contract year, Joe has no doubt that the Bucs will get Ryan’s A-game, which also means an attention to detail in film study that the current defensive backs may have never experienced.
Retired Bucs cornerback Richard Sherman was great at mentoring, and even changed Bucs practices, but Joe’s quite sure he didn’t bring the level of juice to the film room that’s about to come from Ryan.
Ryan’s diverse and outspoken leadership, and hopefully steady play, could be quite an X-factor for the Bucs this season.

Don’t forget where he came from. Ryan was expertly coached, during belichicks hay day. His coach in Tennessee is also a deciple. Hopefully the bucs defense will be more gameplan specific, instead of we do what we do

Players like Logan Ryan remind me of a hockey coach I had who used to preach ‘Don’t just be prepared; be over-prepared’. Our Secondary in particular has needed a true ‘field general’ for a number of years now. I’m hoping that Ryan will fill that need.

We need another CB.
Cockrell is a great #6 CB but a horrible #4 CB.
We need to be 5 deep at CB.
Our 3 young CBs get hurt a lot.
We need 5 good corners. That’s the reality of the NFL.
Instead we have Trask, Darden, and Hainsey.

As soon as Ryan was signed, I immediately felt he would improve communication in the secondary. Just imagine if all our secondary spent countless hours studying that weeks’ opponent? I am optimistic about our secondary improving this year, although according to stats, they weren’t “awful” last year as some commenters seem to be certain of. All fans can remember is that last series against the Rams, and it was just that: 1 series, admittedly a bad one. Consider this: Ryan DID practice against Brady for a few years in NE, which had to have made him a smarter player.

Logan Ryan will be a great leader for this defense and set examples for how it is done. Get the young guys to learn discipline.

Ryan has over 200 snaps, at three different DB positions. That kind of experience is hard to come by. He’s also a deadly ball hawk for errant throws. He’s one of the best blitzing corners in the game. Belichicks defense doesn’t call for a ton of blitzes, especially from the secondary. He trusted him to get to the backfield.

I don’t know who will be coming off the field but I believe that Logan Ryan will be on the field more than 50% of the snaps on D.
He is either a starting “safety” or the nickel or a third safety in a 3 safety backfield. Either way he will be out there. He’s a better player than Edwards or SMB.

@Colin in Canada, since nickel is the new base defense in the league, I suspect you’ll be proven right. Add on the fact that offenses will need to score in the high twenties to have a chance against the bucs. Should be a great fit

I believe the Bucs extremely upgraded their secondary this off-season. Let’s hope they don’t make a huge mistake by letting Suh walk and the Dline takes a step back. The 2 work hand in hand. The old school Bucs had the best Dline and best secondary in the NFL for years. And they fed off each other and that’s exactly what the Bucs need now. As long as they don’t give up the big plays or give up over 20 points a game the offense will do the rest. Go Bucs

Sometimes I think people forget that Dean was not the starting corner coming out of preseason SMB was. After he got hurt in the 1st quarter of game #1 (hit by his own free safety) Dean replaced him and was toyed with by the Dallas QB the rest of the game. If Dean was indeed smb’s backup he was embarrassingly unprepared for his duties. I hope Ryan and the appropriate coaches will impress upon the young man that he will be trade bait if it happens again.

Here’s a thought, maybe these position coaches just aren’t good enough. BA stopped coaching coaches years ago. He told you so, multiple times in the press. How about some accountability. How many coaches were retained after a home playoff loss, in the divisional round? Too many in my opinion.

I agree with most. It would be nice to add another vet CB to the mix for depth. Love the Ryan signing. He’s pretty much the Brady of the defense with his preparation.

Maybe we can sign a LB with the same pedigree so we don’t have to hear LVD talking about a communication breakdown after a loss.

Hey Joe, I think the Buc’s made two great additions to the Secondary with Logan Ryan & Keanu Neal..with Ballhawk Mike Edward’s & Antonio Winfield I feel we are good at Safety..JMB & Jamel Dean need alot of improvement..Davis III one lock down corner & I Believe the fast,hard hitting corner we got in the draft (I can’t remember his name) will be the other lockdown corner from day one..HE’S also quite a ballpark I have heard..

This all means nothing if they can’t get to the QB. Sometimes, bowles coaches like he has Ed Reed and Deion Sanders back there. Maybe a little less blitzing, and let Brady dictate the game.

Secondary coaching was abysmal last year.

Just answer this question. Would you rather have Bradberry or Bunting or Dean or evan Davis. If the Bucs had Bradberry he would automatically there #1 DB. Hands down.
