Playing Chess With Logan Hall
April 30th, 2022Former defensive back and NFL scout Bucky Brooks of NFL Network thinks the Bucs got a very cool toy for Bucs coach Todd Bowles.
Last night, University of Houston defensive lineman Logan Hall became the Bucs’ first pick of the 2022 draft, the first player chose in the second round.
Hall literally can play just about anywhere on the defensive line. While not saying Hall will dominate immediately, Brooks suggested he has the skillset to be a matchup nightmare depending on his deployment.
The high-motor defender from Houston is an intriguing chess piece at the point of attack. Hall is a rare inside-outside pass rusher with the capacity to create chaos as a speed-rushing defensive tackle in sub-packages or on the edges as a traditional edge defender.
Joe isn’t expecting a whole lot from Hall this year, as it sounds as if the Bucs will try to use him more as a pass rusher than a run-stuffer. And as we all know, unless your last name is “Bosa,” rarely do rookies pass rushers have a major impact.
April 30th, 2022 at 2:22 am
This was the correct choice. I think he’ll contribute as the year goes on and could become a fixture for years to come.
April 30th, 2022 at 2:35 am
Look for TRYON to have a break-through season. Now that JPP is gone, look for Tryon to get a lot more snaps, which is exactly what he needs.
I bet they will line Hall up mostly outside. We need to draft a BIG D-Tackle that we can add to a rotation.
April 30th, 2022 at 2:36 am
As I posted in previous threads, Hall is a tall 6-5 tweener DE/DT, mainly a 5 tech, but can be moved all along the line for matchup nightmares. He is not a pure edge, nor an OLB, definitely not a classic DT.
He’s still raw, but shows good pass rush skills, good hand work (important), good power, quickness to shoot gaps, nice work in small spaces, quite explosive. He has to be coached up to lower his pad level and increase his physical strength, but you can see him swatting away and flattening O linemen in his film and getting into the backfield. Let’s hope he becomes an Aaron Donald type weapon, soon.
April 30th, 2022 at 2:37 am
This guy won’t contribute no more than joe tryon did as a rookie, i would’ve been more satisfied with Malik Willis as a pick over Logan hall. I can’t wait to hear what Joebucsfan say about this pick on the next podcast because if they support this draft pick then I’ll know forsure they’re getting paid by Jason licht lol…anyways please don’t tell me this is Todd Bowles doing because he’s starting off wrong already…hashtag not too excited about the ‘22 season led by the goat
April 30th, 2022 at 2:38 am
I wouldn’t mind playing a little chess with her. On my bear skin rug, in front of the fireplace, sippin wild turkey…
April 30th, 2022 at 2:39 am
Last but not least lol someone explain to me how is this player better than jermaine Johnson and devonte Wyatt??????????? It’s giving 2012-2017 bucs vibe
April 30th, 2022 at 3:02 am
Hope to God they ressign Suh–he is reliable and brutal paired up with Vea.
April 30th, 2022 at 3:06 am
The key stat for Bucs D is Average Points against. Keep it at 20 and we are home free.
April 30th, 2022 at 3:11 am
Need to draft a corner. Need cornerback depth.
April 30th, 2022 at 3:12 am
Drebucs, I am not liking this draft at all. Goedeke might be good, but a reach and a slot that should have been defense. Rachaad White, an awful pick and a lean, upright runner with no lateral quickness—wasted pick, and another lost opportunity to add defense.
Of the three, I think Logan Hall was the most sensible pick. Not a great pick, there were better prospects with even more uniqueness, but he ticks the right boxes. He’s raw like JTS, but has more technical skill than JTS did coming out. Hall is going to need work getting his pad level lower, having much better pass rush tactics. But he flashes good pass rush, good hands, and is an Aaron Donald pass rush type, which the Bucs need. 5 tech, versatility.
Given that the top of the draft is done, and the rest of the draft isn’t likely to net any stars, where is the instant impact going to come from?
I still want to see serious action in trades and free agency after this. If they want a SB this season with Brady, they must. Because I don’t think this rookie class is going to be more than spot talent initially.
April 30th, 2022 at 3:22 am
Dre, I might have preferred edge A.Ebikete or edge Boye Mafe instead of Hall, and edge Sam Williams, CB Cam Taylor-Britt instead of Goedeke, RB Brian Robinson or edge Zach Carter or Myjai Sanders instead of R.White.
Another issue with Logan Hall is that he only had one great season, preceded by nothing. Hopefully he isn’t just a one season wonder.
April 30th, 2022 at 3:30 am
I am super bummed about every single one of our picks so far, but I’ve been wrong on players before and hope that’s the case here too.
April 30th, 2022 at 4:45 am
Buczilla, on an absolute basis, on their own, I can see some long-term value in Hall, and Goedeke might be a solid one more quickly. On a relative basis, I’m not keen on either. There was just better talent at or near those spots.
I hate the Rachaad White pick. On every level.
It irks me to see teams like the Seahawks, Ravens, having a great draft.

Dude, did you really post that you wanted someone who would contribute immediately, then say you wanted the Bucs to take Malik Willis? Please tell me you were drunk and/or high while posting this.
April 30th, 2022 at 4:55 am
In terms of edge pass rushers, good night, the draft is, barring for sleeper miracles, essentially over except for more developmental types.
To field a SB contender that can beat the Rams, or even the Saints, they need veterans, going to have to hit free agency for Akiem Hicks/Jerry Hughes/Jadeveon Clowney/Carlos Dunlap. Sign Tyrann Mathieu and a CB like Bryce Callahan. Cut the underperformers from the secondary.
April 30th, 2022 at 5:23 am
Logan Hall I can see, especially as a Rnd 2 pick. Luke Goedeke I can see, especially if the Bucs aren’t confident in Stinnie, Leverett and/or Hainsey to replace Marpet. I can even see selecting Rashaad White because of his purported pass-catching prowess, just not in Rnd 3 (he’s a Rnd 4-5 prospect IMO).
Bucs NEED another DT. Bucs NEED another TE. Bucs NEED an ILB to back up LVD & White. Hopefully we re-sign Suh AND Gronk, then add a FA ILB. Like I think you’ve said before though Joe, ‘hope’ isn’t much of a strategy.
April 30th, 2022 at 6:04 am
If suh really is not coming back then good with DT winfrey at first pick. Good value pick in 4th for sure unless something is out there we dont know about and reason he is not taken yet. Bucs did meet with him so we shall see. Maybe they weren’t impressed.
But i think bucs need another corner after last year and there are two just sitting there
Tarig woolen and zyon maccalom
Both big corners with really good speed. Macallom may be better tackler.
Both would immediately help with crappy special teams too
Most of our dbs arent physical and a tad soft when they get dinged up
And tight end has to be addressed at some point
Grab one of the top punters too. I know that sounds lame but our guy is washed. Remember the rams game 😂
April 30th, 2022 at 6:13 am
Zyon maccalum
4.3 speed and 6’4?
13 picks in college . Small school i get it
He was captain and gunner on special teams
If no winfrey , grab this kid
He is projected rounds 3-4 so good value
April 30th, 2022 at 6:21 am
Whoops maccalom 6’1
Wooley is 6’4
April 30th, 2022 at 6:36 am
Good pick he’ll contribute and like Becky notes he can play anywhere across the line and he’s got a good head on his shoulders and that’s 50% of making a great impact.
April 30th, 2022 at 6:45 am
@ joe in Michigan, if you would reread you’d see that i said pretty much in a nutshell that if we were going to take someone like Logan hall who’s not going to be contribute right away or have instant impact like BOOTH, WYATT or J Johnson then I’d been more satisfied for a guy like Malik Willis.
April 30th, 2022 at 6:46 am
And yes the way this draft went i downed acouple of shots lol
April 30th, 2022 at 6:52 am
I am going to trust Jason light..
I am pretty sure he knows what he is doing.. every year the fans complain about the picks.. I do like what they are doing.. let’s see what gems they find in round 4 today.
April 30th, 2022 at 6:54 am
Looks like Licht has quietly replaced JPP with the Tryon pick last draft and now potentially Suh with the Hall pick.
As much as fans are attached to guys like JPP and Suh we simply can’t afford them. Drafting and developing your players is the name of the game.
April 30th, 2022 at 7:04 am
@Esteban85
Why do see Esteban from Kill Bill 2 when I read your comment?
April 30th, 2022 at 7:11 am
Stack Hall on the inside with Vea/Gholston on run downs, or bookend him
w/Anthony Nelson in a 3 man front with Vita. Line JTS/Nelly outside of him on 4 man alignments. I think Hall is good by himself, but more importantly he compliments the rest of our DL talent pretty well. Can’t wait to see how Hall gets worked into the mix as the off-season picks up steam and heads into the summer
April 30th, 2022 at 7:31 am
What a bunch of nay-sayers in here. Note to self, decline any Thanksgiving invitations to join the pity-partiers from JBF. Geeze. Eeyore’s galore.
April 30th, 2022 at 7:35 am
To use a chess term….Hall is a rook………(rookie)…..so let’s give him a shot.
The only pick (not player) I question is the 3rd round RB……did we really need to do that…..
April 30th, 2022 at 7:46 am
I like that Hall grew up a military brat, huge contrast to Wyatt
April 30th, 2022 at 7:49 am
Still can’t believe they past on Davante Wyatt and took Logan Hall. Mark my words he is going to be a disappointment. They took him because he might have a sack or two more during the season. Great, but at what cost? He is going to get pushed around in the run game which is supposed to be our strength.
April 30th, 2022 at 7:56 am
Odd to me white isn’t a return guy. That would’ve made sense then. Have to trust licht picked well!
Punter comin.
April 30th, 2022 at 8:07 am
I like the first two picks. Don’t know much about white, but don’t look at rb as a need I’d like to see them pick up Winfrey with this next pick. I think with hall and Winfrey I would reface our defense. After I would pick the best ILB available. I’d resign suh and I think with additions to the secondary the defense is night and day better than last year.
April 30th, 2022 at 8:26 am
I think Jason Licht has done a good job with this draft, so far.
Our new Running back has some speed, for a change!
Sean Sullivan is very high on him, and I am very high on the opinions of Sean!
I like both our new Guard, and our new Defensive Lineman.
April 30th, 2022 at 8:34 am
LOLZ @ all the “Recruiting Expert” in the comments.
The NFL Draft is a CRAPSHOOT. Always has been. Beyond the top 10-15 players (and even some of those will bust) so much of scouting is a bit of LUCK.
The Bucs scouting department has been excellent at drafting linemen in the past several years -> Marpet & Cappa from small schools, and Wirfs obviously turned out to be a stud. I’d say the odds are high that Goedeke turns into a starting guard for us as a rookie. Stinnie is decent but I’d be Goedeke is much better since the Bucs drafted him at #57 overall (even moving up for him).
I’d give the Bucs scouting department the benefit of the doubt with that guard pick.
Hall was a highly rated prospect and there’s not much risk with that selection. Sure he could bust just like a top 10 could, but if he’s the Bucs 1st selection of this draft, the odds are good that they put in the work on this kid and feel strongly that he’ll be productive as a rookie, especially with a hole to fill if Suh doesn’t return. Tryon didn’t get to see tons of snaps due to Shaq & JPP and will get more in 2022.
As for the White pick, RBs are always harder to predict as to whether they will pan out or not. This “he was a 4-5 round projection” stuff… there are always players who go much higher than expected and many that go much lower. Clearly the Bucs saw something special in White to draft him in the 3rd round.
White looks like he has a lot of upside potential from his highlights. That patient running and hop-step lateral move he has is just like Emmitt Smith’s was. Very few backs develop that technique and are good at it. Looks like White uses it effectively to pick up extra yards where most backs would run into contact.
White, like any RB drafted, is a big question mark. But the Bucs like him a lot for some reason and that’s good enough for me to see how he pans out.
April 30th, 2022 at 8:48 am
Well said Bradybuc
April 30th, 2022 at 8:49 am
Been al long time since we had a player on the DL like Bill Kollar
April 30th, 2022 at 9:09 am
Do any of you understand that R. White can be used as a wide receiver and not just a running back? He use to play the position, it gives the BUCS help if Godwin takes longer to be ready to play.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:10 am
If the Bucs are just looking for depth now I would take the best player available. That would be Fafalele from Minn. Huge OT with an even bigger upside. Can take a CB later in the 4th. But that won’t happen. Licht already found his guy in the 2nd. Just too bad he drafted an RB too early…again!
April 30th, 2022 at 9:14 am
Those pff grades are whatever. I know you cant base off that
But the kid we drafted had highest pff grade last year of any running back
He counted for almost a third of team yards on offense
April 30th, 2022 at 9:16 am
All you couch potato GMs should submit your resumes to 1Buc Place. As for me, I think the current real GM JL has earned our respect.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:16 am
White was a pick for Brady. Slippery pass catching rb that Brady can dump off to.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:25 am
Next Aaron Donald? Hope so.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:25 am
Double dip with Winfrey
April 30th, 2022 at 9:30 am
This maybe a good choice but this D is heading in the wrong direction. Dline looking VERY weak.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:35 am
The more I look at more I like this pick much better than Jones. I don’t expect a pass rush impact this year from him but I do expect him to be in the rotation.
April 30th, 2022 at 9:41 am
Was hoping to add DT Jones out of UConn. Very strong guy that could have been a solid compliment to Vita and Gholston
April 30th, 2022 at 10:05 am
For all of you nay sayers here, remember….you aren’t a professional football scout or coach. Your opinions would likely be laughed at by people who do this for a living. But you keep being you and being negative Nancy. The BUCS front office will continue doing its job, and drafting in the top 20% of the league every year. Clowns.
April 30th, 2022 at 10:20 am
Chad Reuter at NFL dot com has given us an A. Why don’t you armchair fanboys just pipe down and let the games tell the story.
These guys need a minimum of 2 years to assess their transition to the NFL.
I have high hopes for JTS this year as he took the time to go to that edge rusher camp that all the big names have gone to. Let’s see what happens.
I like that we got a heck of a lot younger at the DL, but I wouldn’t mind having either Suh or JPP back as veteran leaders. I don’t see them both coming back. Hall can play both of their positions, but the tea leaves say Suh is the guy the Bucs are working on from a contract perspective. Haven’t heard little bo peep from the Bucs on JPP.
April 30th, 2022 at 12:13 pm
Listnfrmafar . I agree 👍🏽 with you about the defense it will be weak. This is will not be a superbowl team with no pass rushers.
