Should The Bucs Sniff A Quarterback?
April 26th, 2022The Bucs have the greatest quarterback of all time. And they burned a No. 64 pick on a QB last year, Kyle Trask, though he’s been shrouded in bubble wrap and hidden in the attic of One Buc Palace since the 2021 preseason.
(Yes, Joe knows the Bucs also re-signed Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin.)
If you believe former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, had Tom Brady stayed retired, the Bucs were not going to hand the keys to the offense to Trask. Instead, per Simms, the Bucs were going to try to lure Deshaun Watson or another starter to Tampa.
At the combine in February, though former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians seemed to be leaning toward Gabbert as the next starter, he also all said he was going quarterback shopping, too.
That didn’t exactly come across as unbridled confidence in Trask.
Maybe there is a reason for that?
Timo Riske, a spreadsheeter that populates the PFF Tribe’s cave, seems to think if Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett is the lone quarterback off the board when the Bucs pick, maybe Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht will grab a quarterback at No. 27 on Thursday night.
After the Brady unretirement I haven’t seen any mock drafts with the Bucs taking a QB.
But I just stumbled over Peter King’s mock draft and if Pickett is the only QB gone by pick 27, the opportunity cost of not selecting a QB could be huge for the Bucs.

Joe can answer this theory in one word: No.
Many NFL types believe had Trask come out this year, he would have been the first quarterback selected. So if he theoretically is better than the rest of these guys, why would Licht pick a quarterback at No. 27 when he already has Trask? That makes no sense to Joe. None. At all.
Besides, it is Super Bowl or bust this year. Whoever you draft at No. 27 better get on the field and contribute, not hold a clipboard wearing a cap on the sidelines and fetching Brady’s water.

Three quarterbacks will be drafted before the Bucs pick. Maybe four. Pickett lightly won’t even be the first one picked. Probably be the kid from Liberty, who looks like a slightly more polished version of Trey Lance. Even if it was just one, we won’t be picking a QB this year. Unless he also happens to play defensive line, offensive line, or cornerback.

None of this years qbs are impressive…
I am one who buys into the notion that Task would easily have been the best QB if drafted this year…
IF the Bucs coaches can’t coach up Trask who put up great stat against an all SEC schedule, then they sure can’t turn duds into studs… So, NO!

Not forget but Tampa has the best FO in the NFL. They know what the future QB situation is. Thats their job. We could snag Patrick Mahomes!

^^JASON CAN GET IT LEAGUE MINIMUM^^

What is the actual window for Brady?
Neither this year’s nor next year’s draft are good for QBs. 2023 might be even worse. Kenny Pickett is the only one, and will probably be top 15. If the team were otherwise set, and Pickett dropped into their sights, yes, but this is not one of those offseasons. Defense is badly in need of fresh talent, and lots of it. Gronk still is a question mark.
I still think the future QB should come via a trade for a good young #2 on a team with an established starter. Trask still needs his audition, and is a complete unknown.
April 26th, 2022 at 1:43 am
Drafting a QB would not help this team in 2022. It would also demonstrate that management believed it made a mistake drafting Trask. Pick the best DB, pass rusher, DT, LB or OL. Or trade down.
April 26th, 2022 at 1:45 am
I don’t buy the hype that these guys are all bad. Maybe teams are skittish after last year with Lawrence not looking good, but there’s real upside with Corral and Willis. As of now, Trask is unproven, but I don’t think he’s better than Corral.
If Brady really forced BA out and doesn’t plan on being here next year, we should consider a QB if one slides down to us. Great teams draft for the future
April 26th, 2022 at 2:02 am
totally agree Joe
April 26th, 2022 at 2:30 am
Trade pick for proven player for this year. No QB’s.
April 26th, 2022 at 3:23 am
Having a super great QB these days is to be doomed to mediocrity.
Except for TB they hog up so much cap room there’s no room for anybody else.
April 26th, 2022 at 6:33 am
Depends on if a DT they love falls into their reach but if not I think we trade back and acquire picks, eventually using one on Mayfield and/or Toney. We get Mayfield, we can cut Gabbert OR trade Trask.
April 26th, 2022 at 6:42 am
No more quarterbacks the bucs organization has never been able to develop quarterbacks. Both superbowl QBs came from other teams.
April 26th, 2022 at 6:52 am
Yeah Joe was on vacation yesterday I knew the Toney/Trask comments wasn’t coming from him. When it come to UF player subjects this is his style on what’s posted. It looks like you were given a chance in order to get this forum site even though we’ll never mind.

Bailey Zappe – QB Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. 7th round steal. Go get him Jason!
April 26th, 2022 at 7:32 am
So if I’ve got this right, some irrelevant spreadsheeter with the PFF Tribe named Timo Tiske publishes a THEORY someplace espousing that the Bucs MIGHT draft a QB at #27 IF only 1 QB is off the board at that point. Joe goes out on a limb and rightly shoots it down. Kudos.
Is anyone else besides me wondering why this THEORY made the news this morning? Kyle Trask must be feeling like Rodney Dangerfield about now. And like Ryan Griffin, he hasn’t even thrown his first real NFL pass yet.
April 26th, 2022 at 7:41 am
I’m a fan of Trask – just needs to beef up his arm strength a bit, which I would imagine he has done and is still doing.
Get a good enough team around him and we should be fine in the future.
A QB early in 2023 draft depending on his development is not totally out of question though.
Really should be drafting one almost every single year to be honest.
April 26th, 2022 at 8:04 am
I don’t see us taking a QB because several draft experts have come out and said that if Trask was in this draft, he would be the best QB.
April 26th, 2022 at 8:22 am
No QB for the Bucs in the Draft this year. Fingers crossed Pickett goes to the Steelers! Kid can play and they need a QB. Been saying all along this draft for the Bucs needs to be about Defense unless a stud Guard (Zion Johnson or Kenyon Green) falls to #27. We need to rebuild the D-Line, Edge, and Corner Backs. Got to get a speed rush which will make the secondary better. We are up against top tier QB’s and Offences this year and need to shut them down. My 2 cents!
April 26th, 2022 at 8:26 am
No one should ever sniff quarterbacks.. that’s just gross 😁
April 26th, 2022 at 8:38 am
Westernbuc, I also don’t believe this draft is awfull for DT’s too. Granted there’s no Aaron Donald DT’s in this draft, but how often is there? There’s good players at all positions, QB, and DT included. Just have to get a little lucky when we pick. I do know QBs will be over drafted, so good players will be there at 27.
April 26th, 2022 at 8:56 am
Utter nonsense and I bet that Timo Riske has never even kissed a girl/boy.
April 26th, 2022 at 8:57 am
There are no quarterbacks worth taking! If you think Trask is not worth it then say so. He has not been given a chance. It’s time for him to be more involved.
April 26th, 2022 at 10:04 am
The opportunity cost in that situation is leveraging that pick to trade down and get more top 100 picks. Having OL and WR depth would have helped against the Rams more than a talented 2nd QB.
April 26th, 2022 at 10:11 am
Because people read Joe and the NFL right now, outside of the draft and Deebo Samuel, is absolute dead like Joe cannot remember before. And Joe has the numbers to back that up that lots and lots of people read this site — and Joe is beyond thankf or for that.
April 26th, 2022 at 10:14 am
If you want to sniff a dog that can’t hunt, go ahead and sniff at the four QBs who might be better than Sam Darnold someday.
Trask has a better resume than all of them put together. The high upside potential of this year’s crop is perched over a deep hole; they can go down even easier than going up.
Trask needs his team to stand behind him, not to hide him. Make a real competition of this pre-season and let us see. I feel that he has progressed well and would be a starter for half a dozen teams, but who’s gonna bench Brady. Give Trask some garbage time this season, if he beats Gabbert out.
April 26th, 2022 at 10:23 am
Can you find a more negative picture of Trask? It would be difficult…maybe photoshop him in a wheelchair and with weakling arms.
April 26th, 2022 at 10:27 am
It’s hard to imagine the FO taking a QB in this draft.
April 26th, 2022 at 11:03 am
Trashk obviously doesnt have it if Gabbert & Griffen are both back. Bucs would be foolish to not be looking at QB’s
April 26th, 2022 at 11:06 am
Tell em all the Trask fans cuz like I said that all they do is let the good ones go
April 26th, 2022 at 12:13 pm
Jaymiss- I saw the Network interview with Zappe. I like the kid. His numbers are through the roof and while you can argue against “inferior competition”, you can tell the kid has a “live arm”. He also has a little chip on his shoulders.
He’d be worth the waiver IMO, if we were to choose a QB later in the draft.
