Mike Evans Criminally Underrated

June 30th, 2022

True star.

Joe just doesn’t understand some people.

Ask most NFL fans who are not Bucs fans to name the top five receivers in the game and you are lucky if one of them says Mike Evans.

Man, all Evans does is get yards, catches and rack up touchdowns. What more do you want? Joe thinks this is the fantasy football influence at work. Evans isn’t a burner so folks don’t think of him as a top-shelf receiver. That’s just sad.

Well, here is evidence that Evans should be among the top-five receivers. He’s one of only four receivers to have at least 40 touchdowns in the last four seasons.

Remember, Evans is doing this while racking up 1,000 yards or more in each season. Not too shabby. Yards and touchdowns. And isn’t that the name of the game, touchdowns? You know, points?

Joe has a bad feeling that without Chris Godwin and who knows about Russell Gage, defenses will target Evans to take him out. Teams couldn’t do that recently because Chris Godwin or Gronk or Playoff Lenny would tear up teams.

If Evans gets 1,000+ yards again this season with so many fellow receivers expected to miss time, that should change some folks’ minds on Evans.

If you consider his contract, he might be *the* best receiver in the NFL.

I think he’ll retire a top-3 Buc of all time.

  2. Joe in Michigan Says:

My favorite Mike Evans moment wasn’t even on the football field, it was when he was on stage, handing his Super Bowl ring to the fans in the crowd.

  3. BucsfanFred Says:

Three me-shawns and one team first man.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Mike Evans……Best Bucs Beast!!!

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Mike Evans, Derrick Brooks, Lee Roy Selmon and Ronde Barber are my favorite bucs of all time.

ROH and HOF worthy for sure.

  6. Jp09 Says:

Just ask Jalen Ramsey about Mike Evans

  7. BucsfanFred Says:

I did ask him about ME. He cried like a baby.

  8. Goodbuc'nlife Says:

Not a burner but he consistently gets behind his defender. He’s averaging 14 ypc for his career. Michael Thomas, for example, is not a burner. Mike is sneaky fast and a good route runner. Route running early on for him was a weakness but he replied in speed and size to beat defenders back then. Now, he’s more of a complete receiver. Not many complete and productive receivers in the game. Those that are complete are tops in the league. Mike is for sure one of them. By the end of the season he’ll be near 10,000 yards receiving or more with dang near 100 TD’s in only 8 years. It’s not that he’s isn’t acknowledged as great. The fact is, his prime years mostly where played in the shadows of perpetual loosing. That’s it. Put him on the Giants, or another high profile team and the praises for Mike would be unquestioned. I always refer to OBJ in these arguments. Same draft class, same number, same position, different hype and much different results on the field. The math ain’t mathing here. Mike is a straight dog and I’m glad he’s a Buc. My favorite Buc.

  9. Dooley Says:

Mike will hit 10K career receiving yards in ’22 and get closer to his 100th TD reception.

  10. Goatfarmer Says:

There are droolers who frequent this here website who have said he’s a poor route runner, mediocre, and want him traded.

    Imbecillin.

  11. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Best receiver in Buc History, hands down!! and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. This past season he took time @ Washington before pre-game warm ups to come over to My son and I and sign his football. Great guy…

  12. Trey Long Says:

Love Mike. Great player, teammate and just a good guy. Tough as they come.

  13. Buczilla Says:

No doubt the best offensive player that we have ever drafted.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

    ME13 HOF

  15. PSL Bob Says:

No. 3 on the list. That’s about right if they’re listed in order. To be fair, I think both Adams and Hill are better than Evans, but barely. Without Adams, Green Bay will suck. Without Hill, let’s see how good Kansas City will be. We know what Evans has done for the Bucs. Best receiver in team history. Regardless of supporting cast in 2022, I predict another 1000 yard, 10 TD season.

  16. D-Rome Says:

I think he’ll retire a top-3 Buc of all time.

    Sapp, Brooks, and Selmon.

In terms of on-field production and accomplishments who are you taking off?

I put Evans at #4 and his number should be retired.

  17. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Love Mike but he’s not a top 5 WR in the game. 8 years in and he’s only been in the top 10 in yards in the league 3 times.

Other receivers like Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Travis Kelce, and Michael Thomas have been in the top 10 of yards more than him during that same time span.

The 1,000 yard season is a niche record that no one outside of Tampa talks about. He’s eeked by that mark by 51, 1, 6, and 35 yards. It would be more impressive if he was racking up 1200-1300 yards consecutively versus barely getting by 1k 4 of his 8 years.

Love that he’s a Buc but Buc fans are so unaccustomed to success that we tend to overvalue our few good players

  18. Mybucsdontbucaround813 Says:

Now I’m sure we all know how talented Antonio is or was correct? Have any off you guys wonder why Mike was still the guy double nearly every play. It’s because although we as fans feel as though we know who are the best receivers in league but the defensive coordinators in this league know who to double throughout the course of the season

  19. SlyPirate Says:

Mike is not a Top 5 WR.

Kupp, Adams, Samuel, Hill, Chase … Just off the top of my head.

Evans isn’t even top 10. It’s doesn’t mean he sucks.

  20. Buccos Says:

It’s called consistency, availability and production. Someone needs to get those first downs and TD’s. Someone needs to suit up every game or close to it. To get 1,000 yards every season in his first 8 years is legendary. If that isn’t a big deal then how come no one else in the history of the NFL ever did it?

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

And the droolers show themselves. Maroons.

  22. Its a Bucs Life Says:

@BUccos, if it’s such a big deal why doesn’t anyone outside of Tampa talk about the record?

  23. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

He’s been the best receiver in the league for 5+ years. People need to give him his due. The Bucs are still viewed negatively by some sports “writers” even with the Super Bowls and Tom Brady. To me it appears Evans is downgraded by association. Screw them. We know he’s the best.

  24. Crickett Baker Says:

Not to mention that he is unmatched in getting pass interference calls from the opponents. hahahaha

  25. Yanksbucsnoles Says:

@its a bucs life “Other receivers like Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Travis Kelce, and Michael Thomas have been in the top 10 of yards more than him during that same”

Funny that not one of the guys you mentioned above posted 1k 7 seven seasons in a row. Pretty rare seeing as how nobody but ME has ever done it. Not ever. The greatest of all time JR. And I think you’re mistaken, ME breaking g that tie with Moss was a huge national story. Talked about all the time on national networks. Major, major accomplishment. Don’t really understand your take hoss.

  26. Its a Bucs Life Says:

    @Yanksbucsnoles,

Literally no one outside of Tampa talks about the consecutive 1k seasons, especially like stated above his seasons to do this niche record are not dominant years.

AB and Julio Jones were dominate for 5 and 6 year runs. Where Mike has had 2 maybe 3 dominate years. So Buc fans pumping their chest about this niche record just shows how clueless they are about the league overall.

    AB had a 6 year stretch where he put up 1499, 1698, 1834,1284, 1533 and 1297.

    Julio Jones had a 5 stretch where he put up 1593, 1871, 1409, 1444 & 1677

Evans has remained healthy and is consistently average that is why he is getting these 1k seasons or needing the final game of each season to get 1,000 yards. Dominate WR’s for a prolonged stretch make the HOF and are top 5.

I celebrate every Evans 1st Down and TD as I love the Bucs, but let’s be real as of now he’s not top 5 like the post suggests and he’s not a hall of famer.

  27. Goldenbuc Says:

Julio played with an MVP QB,
    AB played with a HoF

Mike played with several Different quarterbacks only one of MVP/HoF caliber and that was the past 2 years. Not to mention in a loaded offense.

    Bad comparison.
    @its a bucs life

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

Droolers and maroons sell ME short. They should be forced to watch footage of Kenny Bell in preseason for hours and hours.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Bucs Life it’s really important for you to share your take with Tom Brady. He seems to think ME is one of the best he’s ever seen and is a HoF player. But let’s see – your take or TB12? You should tweet your take out to Brady. I’m sure you can set him straight.
