Unless folks are convinced Ndamukong Suh isn’t returning, Joe doesn’t get why so many people are adamant the Bucs draft a defensive tackle at No. 27.
It seems helmethair Mel Kiper, he of the 630,824 mock drafts each spring — would you please just be a man and stick to your guns with one mock! — has the Bucs selecting a defensive tackle and a left guard in the first two rounds.
In the first round Kiper (at least for a few hours) has the Bucs landing DT Devonte Wyatt.
… Wyatt played mostly as a 3-technique tackle for the Bulldogs, but he could play end in a 3-4 defense, too. He wasn’t a super productive pass-rusher (2.5 sacks last season), but he has the physical tools that coordinators will want to mold. Cornerback could be a possibility for Tampa Bay as well.
Now in the second round, Kiper, (at least for a few hours) isn’t much of a fan of Aaron Stinnie and thinks the Bucs need to draft Cole Strange, a left guard from Chattanooga.
Super Bowl contenders are allowed to use the draft to fill needs, because they don’t have many holes. And really, the Bucs and Bills are the two teams with the fewest number of obvious holes. With Ali Marpet retiring and Alex Cappa signing with the Bengals, Tampa will have two new starters at guard. Strange made 44 starts in college and showed at the Senior Bowl that he could play with the best of the best.
Once again, if the Bucs think Suh is gone, then yeah, go ahead and draft a defensive tackle. If they think Suh is returning, Joe would much prefer a corner.
Think back to last year and the memories of the defense. You tell Joe which was more glaring, the need for a corner or a defensive tackle? (Hint: The Bucs allowed the third-fewest rushing yards but were 25th in passing yards allowed.)
Drafting this Strange on the second day of the draft actually screams “Jason Licht.” That’s where Licht has a strong history of drafting small school guards who blew up at the Senior Bowl. It’s a huge reason he drafted Ali Marpet (Hobart College) in the second round and Alex Cappa (Humboldt State) in the third round.

I see a corner for the first pick and a tight end for the second. Just get the best of those positions at those picks. For tight end the kid from Colorado State or UCLA look like players to me,

It’s simple: (1) you can’t be 100% sure that Suh will re-sign; (2) he’s giving us fewer & fewer defensive snaps each game/season & we need someone to take up the slack; (3) this is the perfect opportunity for his successor to learn from the master, and (4) we’ve already seen how catastrophic injuries can be on various position groups; lose Vea or Suh & we’d be sucking hind teet.
Other than that, I’ve got nothing. But BTW, we’ve got a LOT more flexibility in our Secondary this year (with the addition of Ryan & Neal) than we had last season. I’d look for successors to Suh, JPP & LVD before I’d be worrying about adding another CB to the stable. Might even consider a TE to be more important.

I want to be a fan of Stinnie but the fact that he was a free agent and the best contract that he could get was a one year 1.4 million deal suggests that enough teams saw flaws in his game to mean he is clearly just a backup in the NFL.
I hope I am wrong, and he balls this year.

Even if suh returns, he’s not getting any younger. Vea is essentially a two down player. I think you can find value at DT in the later rounds. Corner is the most pressing needs though.

The defensive line’s poor pass rush did almost as as much as injuries did to the secondary.
Funny how you were beating the pass rush drum for years but now you want a CB over a pass rusher?

I completely agree with Joe. DT and Oline are not a necessity. BPA at #27. Although Wyatt would be hard to pass up. Some scouting reports have him as an early second round pick.
Possible picks at #27 I’d like in order;
Devin Lloyd, LB
Treylon Burks, WR
Devonte Wyatt, DT
Green or Johnson, G
A CB or SS if one falls but it don’t see it happening.

Even if Suh returns we are still dangerously thin. You generally rotate dline. Only decent depth we have is behind vea with nacho and he’s a 2 down player. You can’t just hang your hat on starters on dline with zero rotational/depth guys. Recipe for disaster. It’s not that different from corner really

Bill Barker … Couldn’t agree more. Everyone was hollering that we lost in the playoffs because of DEFENSE. Others keep saying that we had a pushover schedule last year & that this year’s will be much tougher. We’ve added TWO previous pro-bowlers to our Secondary to offset the loss of 1 player (Whitehead) and BOTH of them provide great flexibility back there.
In the meantime, the Front 7 has LOST FOUR PLAYERS (Suh, McLendon, JPP & Minter), and NONE of them have been replaced (or re-signed) yet. Even IF they are re-signed, their average age is 34 years old. Those are the beasts taking the beating up-front. Since we have vey little salary CAP to play with (and still have to sign our draft picks as a minimum Plus HOPEFULLY Gronk & a couple other FAs also), personally I’d be looking at replacing as many of those 4 in the draft as we could. And replacing them with later round draft picks is pretty much worthless, considering that they’d be replacing high-round picks like Suh & JPP & yes, Minter.

On a different note, watched the USFL game an was pleasantly surprised as it was really a well played game and I like that they allow harder hitting like in the good ole NFL days. Hopefully the Bandits have success. The Bucs and the NFL will always be first but a solid spring league that actually may stick around would be a nice respite from the long NFL off season void.

Agree with Defense rules Suh is 35 he will lucky to play 50% of the snaps. Mel says left guard christ we are carrying six guards on the roster now Stinnie and Johnson are the ones with experience. I guess the guy from Notre Dame must be a bust need to trade him and another guard and get another draft pick.

The real draft value is on day 2 in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. If you don”t have a great player available in the 1st, trade out of the first round for a mid 2nd round pick, high 3rd round pick and swap of 4th rounders. That would give you 4 picks on day 2 to go get a DT, CB, TE and OL. Top it off with an early RB on day 3.

Joe, you say you don’t get why do many think DT is our top need.
1) Insufficient pressure from the interior widely identified as a problem
2) The team is already reported to be seeking more twitchy rushers there
3) Suh is not signed
4) If Suh returns, he’s 35 and on a 1 year contract
5) Gholston is 30 and on a 1 year contract
6) Nacho is just okay as a backup, and there’s nobody else worth mentioning
7) We have no young talent there except Vea. It’s sad.
8) The best defenses are deep on the defensive line. We are not, at all.
We have 2 starting quality DL on our roster right now. The house is on fire.
How is DT NOT our biggest need, by a large margin?
Seriously Joe, is there another position on the team where you give so many reasons that it’s a draft priority?

I think this year is a bit different. We certainly have needs but they are balanced needs. No glaring problems but depth issues in almost every area.
This is why I think this year’s draft will be much more a BPA affair than a singular focus on positions(s).
I feel like we’re OK at all the positions but depth is a question. QB of course does not matter…if the GOAT goes down there is no backup nor could we expect one.
Everyplace else looks great and if CG14 heals for the second half of the season we become truly dangerous, even if Gronk does not come back.
I wouldn’t mind seeing us draft a MONSTER TE who is known for vicious block skills. Hands OK…don’t need to be great. A MONSTER TE could really enhance things for Playoff Lennie and Vaughn and Gino…both in opening up some running space..and giving those guys a half second of pass protection that lets them release to the flat.

Vita, it was the GM of the colts at the time. Kiper was criticizing their selection of Trev alberts at linebacker. Needed a quarterback of the time and kiper wanted them to draft… Trent dilfer. The linebacker was a bust actually. Dilfer, well, won a super bowl. Haha.

This is a tough one for me. I’m going to trust Licht/Brady with the direction they take.
I actually like Dean, but he gets hurt almost every game.
IF SMB stays healthy, I think he performs decent in a contract year.
Can Bowles PLEASE take Carlton Davis off special teams so he doesn’t miss 3/4 of the season again?

Bucs need two good pass rushers. Right now, all we have is SHAQ.
The secondary will struggle if the pass rush disappears.
Re-signing SUH is huge. He only plays 50% of snaps but he NEVER gets hurt.
IF JTS turns into an 8-10 sack per season guy AND JPP returns on a cheap prove it deal, that would solve a lot.
If JPP miraculously makes it to the playoffs without any major injuries, he will ball out.

Letting JPP play hurt last year was a disaster. Starting Anthony Nelson would have been better.
I would understand if he was productive against the run, but he was TERRIBLE against the run last year. terrible. he couldn’t tackle.
Watch JPP against the run in the Colts game. It was pathetic. On one drive they ran right at him every play. Gashed.
The problem is, JTS was also terrible against the run.
Front 7 is a BIG problem…

^ If Seattle wants the #27, they can give us 40 and 41, but I’m not giving them #60. That’s kind of a wash that I’m not sure benefits us much. We need more picks, not just swapped picks. An extra 5th rounder is okay, but not enough. I say straight up swap 27 for 40 & 41.

Regarding the suggested trade with Seattle. I’m not for or against it but thought I would interject that that the trade chart says that 40 & 41 is basically even value to 27 & 60. Not sure you could squeeze more out of Seattle being they will have other teams they could trade up with. I guess it would depend how the draft plays out if this would be a good idea or not. If everyone we like is gone at 27 then moving down would improve our second round pick but if you like a guy sitting there at 27 then you take him.

The only thing wrong with drafting “developmental players “ is concluding that they were not good picks while in their development phase !
2022 will be the first year those picks should be graded.
The roster was mature if not stacked going into 2021 .
Getting a future starting at any pick is OKAY with me.
Anytime you can draft a player at any position and they can contribute in their first year consider it a blessing from the fickle NFL voodoo science of picking college players and projecting their futures in the pros.

Of course it always depends on value available when you are picking but I do see them selecting D line in rd 1 and a DB within the next 2 rounds.
I suspect WR or RB between 2-4 but definitely would not be upset if they picked up an O lineman in 2-3. I think Stinnie should be fine but it’s about depth

JPP was injured lasrt year and was a shell of himself. Future unknown.
Suh and Vea both played limited snaps. One due to age and the other stamina.
JTS can run around quickly but had little impact. Rookie noob or bust in waiting?
Shaq underperformed his pay scale.
Gholston is a consurmate Buc but getting older too.
But don’t worry, a good cornerback is critical need.

Joe thinks we have one of the best defensive lines? Wow!
We have Vea who is great. Suh is still good, but not great. Gholston is solid. We have nobody beside those 3 that scare anyone. Explain how this is one of the best lines in the league. And we know how Bowles likes to rotate guys in and out. We’ve got scrubs rotating into the game on a regular basis. If one of our starters goes down, we’re not starting a 1st or 2nd round pick future starter, we’re starting a journeyman who has maxed out his talent and is only average, and then our bench is even thinner. When you talk about building the trenches, what about D-line?
And I know Joe likes to blabber about “all in” and next year doesn’t matter… and I say bullshyte. The GM has the job of building for the future as well as this year’s roster. We’ve got nobody except Vea beyond this year. That’s just an unacceptable situation. If I’m the GM, I’m worried.

Joe……yes you have Vita Vea in the middle. And Nunez-Roches as his backup on the last year of his contract. Beyond that you only have a 30 year old Gholston on a one year deal, a 35 year old Suh (if he comes back) on a one year deal, and nothing else. They clearly need to use a top pick to bring in a young talented DT that can be part of a rotation this year (keeping the older guys fresh) before taking over full time next year when Suh is most likely gone. This is exactly what they did last year drafting JTS in the first round. He rotated in for JPP last year and will take over full time this year.

Bucs were third-best in NFL in rushing yards allowed. You don’t do that with a bad defensive line. Bucs were 25th in passing yards allowed. Who covers receivers? Hint: It ain’t a defensive lineman. So you tell Joe how a tackle is more important (right now, not next year) than a corner.
(Once again, if Licht is ready to move on from Suh, then OK. Joe gets it then.)

Suh and JPP are both past their primes and injury-prone. Both can still play, but are neither reliable nor the best in the NFL anymore. The D roster is dangerously thin even with both signed.
They badly need top veteran talent (free agency, trades), an infusion of youth (draft), and a lot of depth, at every D position.
A stacked and fearsome defense is the only way to go all-in.

What would you rather take, a Super Bowl this year but suck for the next five years or a division title this year and maybe get to eight or nine wins the next five years? Of course you’d take the Super Bowl. Don’t be silly.
If Licht isn’t all-in for this year he may as well trade Brady for draft picks. The Glazers would strip Licht of all authority if he tried that just like the Glazers did to Richie McKay when he tried to hire Marvin Lewis over Chucky. The Glazers clipped his wings, as they should have.

Your off you rocker if you watched that Rams loss and think we got one of the best pass rushes…….Shaq Barret was a complete no show, JPP was terrible all year, Tryon didnt flash much, Gholston and Nacho are not pass rush threats.
If we upgrade passrush its the best way to get us another Lombardi.
I dont care how we get it done. Draft a DL, DT, Edge, OLB….whatever you wanna call it. Passrush is our biggest need……yes, even with Suh

The most glaring thing I saw was a woefully inconsistent pass rush. It would disappear for entire halves of games, if not longer. And it happened frequently, and especially against good teams.
So yeah, I’d say pass rush is a bigger need, and that it needs to be addressed more than the back-end.
(Which was also completely ravished by injures. I mean we lost our TOP 5 starting cornerbacks and TOP 3 starting safeties at various points through the season. That’s almost unheard of)

Can’t say that I really agree with that conclusion Joel, because that’s another place where stats can mislead. Being the 3rd-best in rushing yards allowed TOTAL doesn’t say as much as being the 3rd best in rushing yards allowed PER ATTEMPT.
As it turned out, opposition teams ran the least against the Bucs (366 attempts in 17 games, or only 21.5 rushing attempts per game average). We surrendered 1573 rushing yards in those 366 attempts, for an average of 4.30 rushing yards per attempt. That ranked us 17th in the NFL … that’s right, 17th.
PERHAPS opposing teams didn’t rush as much against us because they found it more productive to PASS AGAINST US. Teams passed against us a whopping 680 times last season (that’s a ridiculous 40 passing attempts per game average) … ranked #1 in the NFL. They accumulated 4062 passing yards total against us, ranking us #21 in the NFL. But what’s most revealing is that amounted to 5.6 passing yards per attempt on the season, ranking us #3 in the NFL.
So when the opposition rushed against us they gained an average of 4.3 YPA, and when they passed they gained 5.6 YPA. Overall says that STATISTICALLY they did better passing against us than rushing, BUT … we still only had the 17th best defense in the NFL with 4.30 rushing yards allowed per attempt. Sorry, but that’s not a great defensive line. Compared to 2020, it was a significant step backwards in that department.

Joe….Defensive line is not just about stopping the run. They need a young DT that can not only stop the run but can help pressure the QB up the middle. You will not find that kind of player later in the draft. You have to get one early. You said the Bucs were 25th in pass defense and ask who covers receivers. Pass defense is not only about who is in coverage! If you aren’t getting pressure on the QB then I don’t care who you have in the secondary, they will get picked apart. Adding to the secondary is never a bad thing but we have far more youth and flexibility in the secondary than we do on the DL. Secondary depth can be gotten later in the draft. And lastly, a DT would immediately get playing time in a rotation where as a corner would be watching from the sidelines this year. Davis & Dean are your starters on the outside and Murphy- Bunting & Logan Ryan will both play at slot corner.

A rookie 3rd or 4th string CB isn’t going to stop a prowbowl QB from picking apart our zone coverage in 4 seconds.
A rookie DT will keep Suh and Vea fresh in rotation to more effectively rush the passer.

A young, fresh-legged powerful DL to get in the rotation this year would be a huge assist to making a Superbowl. I’d say, if it weren’t for the limited number of picks, that we ought to double up on D-line.

McKay didn’t try to hire Marvin Lewis “over Chucky”… The Gruden thing wasn’t ever on the table as an option according to anything that was every reported. McKay’s job was to go find a coach, an available coach. Nobody was talking about trading for Gruden. The Glazers refused to hire Lewis after McMay suggested him. They then went off on their own crazy coaching odyssey that led them down a bunch of paths. The whole thing was an embarrassment until they pulled a Gruden trade out of their a55es. They looked like buffoons doing it, though it worked out in the end.
Saying McKay tried to hire Lewis over Chucky is like saying he tried to hire Lewis over Vince Lombardi… It wasn’t even on the table.
Lewis, by the way, might have done quite well with that roster. Probably not a Superbowl in the first year like Gruden… but he was a good coach that ended up hitched to the lowly Bengals for many years.
Also, Gruden is the most overrated head coach in the NFL’s last 20 years. After the Superbowl, they Bucs were no better than an average team.

Joe might be the only one who can’t see that D-line is a glaring need.
The difference between the D-line and our seconday is that the secondary (outside of Ryan) is still young and we have players who might still have a future with the team. Certainly if Dean has a good year and stays healthy-ish, you’d look to re-sign him… and maybe, just maybe, SMB finally puts it all together. And at safety, you’d think the Edwards is someone they’ll be interested in re-signing. Point is that we DO have young talent back there that we might wanna bring back in the future. Those players still are on the upside of their careers.
Also, a 1st round CB isn’t gonna be on the field any more than a 1st round DL this year, probably less.
So, even your argument of CB over DL doesn’t make sense.
That said, I’d still be very if they took a great lockdown corner in round 1, someone who was consistent, and consistently available. If we go corner in round 1 though, you better believe DL needs to be round 2.

Rush defense vs. Pass defense is such a simple minded argument. When good teams wanted to run on us they were able to with success, they just chose to throw because we had undrafted free agents all over our secondary for most of the year.
They re-signed Carlton Davis, still have SMB, still have Dean, still have Mike Edwards, brought in Logan Ryan and Keanu Neal. Picking a corner in the 1st round this year is not a “win now” move. A lot of good that guy will do helping them win now from the sideline.
They’re going to pick either a defensive lineman, offensive lineman, or a linebacker in the 1st round. It just depends how the board falls to them.

OG. Todd Bowles can form and teach a defense all around. Bucs got good scouts and Licht can pick ‘em on the OL. Brady is the GOAT of audible and controlling the line. Need to get a boss OG with Wirfs. Have people not realized how important a good oline is?

We have one of the best. Mason is an upgrade over Cappa. Losing Marpet hurts but we have guys who can probably do a decent job replacing him. We’ll be fine whether we draft a LG or not.

I don’t understand all the buzz about drafting an OG. We have Stinne, Hainsey, Leveritt, Molchon and Hutcherson. What we don’t have is any DTs even if Suh signs. What percentage of snaps will Suh, Golson and Vea play? Maybe 50 to 60%. Who plays those other snaps? What about injuries? If there is nobody at 27 we like trade down and get 2 DTs and a CB. I really don’t understand why we are even talking about drafting any other position other than DT.

Baby Grace……… Completely agree with your stance on OG. It is not a need. As you pointed out we have 5 guards with potential that will battle it out for the starting job leaving plenty of depth behind him. One of them (Hainsey) we used a third round pick on last year. DT is definitely priority #1. Only problem is there is only the two Georgia boys that are worth drafting at 27 and they very likely will be gone at 27.
