Joe was reminded last week of a famous Team Glazer quote back in 2018. “We have never ever told our general manager who to pick in the draft.”
The line was delivered with great conviction to Joe directly from co-owner Joel Glazer.
JoeBucsFan.com: CBS put out a report, it came from Pete Prisco their senior writer. He said ‘ownership who pushed the draft pick,’ referring to Roberto Aguayo, that it was a Team Glazer pick. Is that ridiculous?
Bucs Co-chairman Joel Glazer: We have never, ever, told our general manager who to pick in the draft. That’s all I can say. We know what’s happening. They explain to us why they’re doing things. But we have never done that. I will say this much; one thing we stress is the importance of all phases of the game, special teams, offense, defense. But that was an inaccurate report.
Bitter cynics might say Teams Glazer tells a GM who not to draft, rather than who to draft, and/or ownership states firm desires to its GM followed by “but draft whatever you want.” However, Joe’s not going there. There’s no reason to think Team Glazer is orchestrating draft picks, but they are heavily involved in the process.
Former Bucs rock star GM Mark Dominik co-hosted on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week and referenced Team Glazer’s role in the draft.
Dominik was saying he liked to have a final draft board ready on the Monday prior to the draft “to speak to ownership about the board” and “talk to ownership about acquiring or trading future picks away and their mindset towards it.”
Joe believes this is an interesting draft year for Team Glazer. As of today, it sure smells like 2022 is Tom Brady’s final Bucs season, also known as the Bucs’ last fantastic shot at a Super Bowl for a little while.
Might Team Glazer strongly urge general manager Jason Licht to do everything possible to win now, including trading up in this draft and using future picks if necessary if the Bucs see a fast-impact player(s) within their sights?

We could only wish that the Glazers would have chosen picks instead of Mark Dominick (worst Buc GM ever)……
It’s simply not their style to go all “Jerry Jones” on everything……they delegate.
Now, are they involved…in the know….kept informed…..hell yes, they own the team….they should have some enjoyment with the process.

It wouldnt be smart to trade away next year’s pick for this weaker draft.

I don’t see any player in the draft worthy of trading up for. For that reason I would be trading down to get extra pick or picks and load up. This team likes speed there are plenty of wide outs and secondary players running 4.3s and 4.4s you can get in the middle or later in the draft.

There are impact guys in the other rounds of the draft. IMHO they should try to trade back if possible and add picks. They don’t have a 5th or 6th rounder, so acquiring more picks would be good. We need possible starters at LG, DT, EDGE, TE and CB. Plus depth is needed at RB, WR, OT (don’t need another Wells situation), EDGE and ILB. They won’t get all this addressed I’m sure, but extra picks would help with most of it if the draft falls right. BTW as a depth WR, check out Tyquan Thornton from Baylor. He ran a 4.21 40 at the combine. That’s a record. Faster than Moss, faster than Hill. I’d love it if he fell to us.

Mark Dominik, the GM that swore against drafting OLmen and traded a 1st round draft pick to have post-ACL surgery Revis play in secondary with a bunch of guys off the street.
Trading up in 2022 should involve those two 7th round picks we have, if Licht can find a way to turn those two day 3 picks into a day 2 pick we’ll be in better shape getting value in rounds 3/4 than waiting midway through the 7th round to draft guys who’ll probably hit the UDFA market anyway.

There are a great number of value players in the 30-80 range. If the Bucs could turn their 1st rd pick into 2 or 3 picks in this range, I’m all for it — especially if the individual they want at 27 isn’t there.

Please no, do not trade away our future draft picks to move up in the draft. First of all, there is not a player in this draft that is going to be a can’t miss difference maker who would be worth trading up for. Also, we have already kicked some of our salary cap hits down the road so having draft picks will be very important in coming years. Yes, we are going all out to win now but let’s not completely trash our future. I don’t want to have an 0-17 team for a decade because we sold out for one year.

One wonders what the Glazers thoughts are on the rumors out of Miami about Brady, minority ownership, Sean Peyton, and his allegedly “failed plan” when Flores filed his lawsuit, all in collusion with Ross that led to his Buc “unretirement” when Flores filed his lawsuit…
Seems like a lot of moving parts…
Will the speculation ever cease? Will the NFL even care?

People that call this a “WEAK DRAFT” are such neophytes. QB and TE are the ONLY and I mean ONLY weak position groups. Jordan Davis is a Once In A Lifetime FREAK that will not come along again until the species evolves. Devin Lloyd is an absolute BEAST at LB. Many great WR and Corners. This is a GREAT draft through the first two rounds , so move up Bucs not back. I want another Superbowl Now.

THE POINT OF THE STORY …
The Glazers have a lot of interests: businesses, investments, yachts, jets, real estate … billionaire stuff. They’ve hired professionals to run the Bucs and they defer to them. This is important because with big money and success, big ego owners commonly interfere. It would be hard to resist. We know when owners interfere the team suffers. Look at Dallas. Kudos to the Glazers.

If you believe Team Glazier wasnt all over the Aguayo pick, I have some beach front property in Iowa that’s for sale.
This wasnt a 5th, 6th or 7th round pick. We moved up to take him in the 2nd round. Ownership was pushing and endorsing this pick.

Not sure I agree with that Joe. I’m perhaps the least cynical guy here. I can accept the Glazers saying they don’t tell the GM/HC’s who to draft and meaning that does not include telling them who NOT to draft.
E.G. IF the Glazers’ daughter had vetoed the JW trade because of ALL HIS MANY incidents at FSU…many of them sex related…as in FHITP screamed out in a giant crowd…the rape “allegations”…and all the rest, where would the franchise be?
Well if you go by the generally accepted trade value chart at Walter Football and other places #1 overall is 3000 points. That could get TWO first rounders 20th or higher. Or your would have enough value to get THE TOP FIVE PICKS IN THE SECOND ROUND.
Obviously no teams holds the top five picks in any round but you see my point.
JW COST THIS TEAM A BOATLOAD OF TALENT. There were no terrific QB’s that year…MM and JW are still playing but worth the top two picks. No way!!!
So I’m not cynical…sometimes I fall prey to becoming bitter despite trying to guard against it…but I EXPECT the owners to keep the roster free of drunks…druggies…sex offenders. No it’s not because I personally am squeaky clean…it’s because it’s NOT worth the risk!!!
Imagine what it meant to ownership when their #1 pick with the worst rep of any player coming out that year…accepts their gamble and then BETRAYS them getting blind drunk at 3AM with a convicted rapist and another dude of questionable reputation. Birds of a feather flock together eh? It meant ownership couldn’t even cash in on their investment one year later.
PR was so bad they couldn’t even put JW’s pic on RayJay. That pick was a DISASTER for the franchise and the owners and their collective reputations.
So yes…while the Glazers may not actually interfere in “talent” selection they have EVERY right to declare certain players off limits if THEY are not comfortable with what that pick does to THEIR reputations and that of the team.

Nope, that would be Bruce Allen, by a country mile… That’s why, by the time Gruden left, the cupboards were bare, the team was aging, and they were terrible. Dominik started to bring more talent aboard, but we had crap coaching. Dominik drafted Lavonte David, Muscle Hamster and had some decent UDFAs. Also signed Vincent Jackson, one of our best free agent signings ever (RIP).
The Glazers have the right to veto, and I highly doubt they’d have reason to use that authority except in rare circumstances. I don’t see how people drew the conclusion that they had a hand in the Aguayo pick, except that it defied reason and no one wanted to believe our GM made that call on his own. I’m gonna blame Licht for that, absent proof that the Glazers had anything to do with it. Why would they demand a kicker in round 2?
