Peter Schrager: Bucs Go With PAC-12 Corner
April 7th, 2022NFL Network’s Peter Schrager has a handle on what is going on inside the walls of a lot of teams because he’s got a good network of intel. So the past couple of weeks he’s been working his sources to find out where teams seem to be leaning in the draft.
As a result, Schrager now has a mock draft (who doesn’t have a mock draft?). And in his first stab at the NFL guessing game, he says the Bucs will pick a corner in Round 1. Schrager made it clear this morning on “Good Morning Football” this is not how he would draft things but what he is hearing
And that corner is Kyler Gordon of Washington. Schrager has him pegged as the fourth cornerback off the board (ahead of Andrew Booth of Clemson).
In his exhaustive breakdown of each NFL prospect, Dane Brugler of The Athletic rated Gordon his No. 6 cornerback.
SUMMARY: A one-year starter at Washington, Gordon was primarily an outside cornerback in former head coach Jimmy Lake’s defensive scheme, also lining up inside against the slot. After losing his starting job to Trent McDuffie in 2019, he worked his way back up the depth chart and earned First Team All-Pac 12 honors in 2021, leading the team in passes defended and interceptions. Gordon has freakish athletic abilities with the impressive acceleration to plant and drive or close the gap after a lost step. Although he played more decisive with his read-react in 2021, he is still figuring out how to dissect his keys and how to prepare for different types of route runners. Overall, Gordon needs to continue maturing his technique and cover awareness, but his fluidity and toughness are ideal for the next level. As he continues to develop the mental side of the position, he has the skills to become a full-time NFL starter.
What spooks Joe is Gordon’s 40-yard dash. He was clocked at the combine at 4.52 per Brugler. That’s M.J. Stewart-like speed.
Joe hopes Bucs scouts have a different speed on Gordon and that the man just had a bad day in Indianapolis, where record 40 times were being churned out on new turf.
Unique highlight for Gordon? He was a WNBA dancer.
The cool thing about Gordon? He was into kung-fu as a child.

MJ Stewart was always trailing WRs 🙁 no thanks
April 7th, 2022 at 10:15 am
Uh, no. 2nd or 3rd round, sure, but not the 1st. We need a DL worse.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:16 am
So he thinks he’s the no 6 cornerback, but he expects him to be the 4th CB selected. hmmm…
April 7th, 2022 at 10:17 am
Haven’t studied this guy but we could do a lot worse than a round one CB…..I still like DT there but I trust Licht & Bowles…..
April 7th, 2022 at 10:18 am
I’m also thinking what’s with all these picks from Washington….Vea, JTS…..& perhaps this guy.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:20 am
This is the NFL, not college. Speed is a premium, the secondary needs help.
Maybe a different choice?
MJ Stewarts name being mentioned at all by Joe in this post is a red flag lol lol
Yes the secondary needs help at the CB position- (see the last several years)
But please do not draft a rookie with MJ Stewart speed lol
GO BUCS!!!!
April 7th, 2022 at 10:21 am
Stop tryna give us short small guys , Bowles love length & speed at the corner spot … Andrew booth pls we need dawgs
GoBucs!
April 7th, 2022 at 10:23 am
I don’t think we plan to empty the bank on Bunting and Dean next year
April 7th, 2022 at 10:24 am
Beef…Big Beef. Where the Beef.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:25 am
His teammate is a lot better.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:29 am
A slow WNBA dancer?
HELL NO!!!
April 7th, 2022 at 10:31 am
I don’t want anyone that lost their starting job.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:31 am
I do not think they will draft a CB at that position in the first round. They move up to get a better one, or move back if this is the one they have their heart set on. To me it seems like the only need position is currently on the defensive line.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:33 am
Nope. Peter Schrager is not Dane Brugler.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:35 am
When are you going to do an article on mid rounder CB Alontae Taylor? I’d love to get the Joe’s opinion.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:39 am
It’ll be a either Treylon Burks, Devonte Wyatt, or any of the hood CB’s
April 7th, 2022 at 10:46 am
Carlton Davis ran a 4.53 and just got paid paid lol
April 7th, 2022 at 10:47 am
Schrager is the same idiot that said the Chiefs were going to blow out the Bucs in the superbowl.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:53 am
Not happening..that guys a second rounder behind McDuffie, his teammate.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:58 am
Nope. Licht will not take a CB this early. Its going to be defensive line in the first round. Maybe OL if the guy he wants is there.
If there is not enough value there, trade back and stock up.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:00 am
Another Washington guy….
April 7th, 2022 at 11:09 am
Glad others are calling for some Big Uglies.
The grave diggers were pretty much digging thir own when our pass rush died.
No pass rush= No Lombardi.
(See 2021) JTS was about as useful as JPP.
Buc fans overjoyed thar Brady is back but it still wont be enough if we cant pressure the QB.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:10 am
Dline, Dline, Dline. Please.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:12 am
Jordan Davis if available or his running mate Wyatt who has some off field issues, but either DT would be great
April 7th, 2022 at 11:17 am
4.52 is fine. That’s not slow. I think it’s about the same as Carlton Davis.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:33 am
Joe, check out Ronde Barber’s 40 time at the combine. I believe it was 4.62. Gordon’s time is sufficient for the position. I am more concerned with his instincts, smarts, and technique. If he has those qualities, he’ll be fine. With that said, I would prefer a defensive tackle, but not sulk if it was a corner.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:36 am
I believe Xavien Howard ran a 4.5 as well.

Carlton Davis was slower… Ronde Barber was 4.63. Stewart was 4.56 or something… but didn’t play to it at all. A good CB can be in the 4.5’s… Richard Sherman was when he came out of school, but his game speed has to be different.
April 7th, 2022 at 1:06 pm
I only want 4.4 and under corners.
I’ve said it Jonathan Banks.
The year I called on the Bucs to draft the Honey Badger in the 2nd round.
April 7th, 2022 at 1:37 pm
No, no & hell no….
CB is not what this roster needs in the 1st Rd….Maybe the 3rd, but one could argue the 4th at the earliest – unless Licht pulls a down move trade for more capital on Day 2….There’s just too much quality depth at CB in this draft to reach for a player that is not likely to start in 2022.
This roster needs to have both DT / Edge locked down before CB.
April 7th, 2022 at 2:48 pm
Terrible mock pick, Gordon is very overrated. So many better ways to go here.
April 7th, 2022 at 6:31 pm
catcard202 … ‘This roster needs to have both DT / Edge locked down before CB.’
Yea verily!
April 7th, 2022 at 7:13 pm
It’s a dumb mock for sure. We pass Wyatt and he gets picked by GB.
I don’t see how we’d pass up Wyatt if he’s sitting there.
April 7th, 2022 at 7:24 pm
What TBBF said!
April 7th, 2022 at 8:26 pm
Carlton Davis III ran a 4.53 40 tell me how that worked out Mr. Joe the GM???
April 7th, 2022 at 9:00 pm
At the end of the month…It will all depend on the board…Who’s there – available -when the Bucs are on the clock…Who knows where the board falls on the Bucs “have to have” vs “Fits Need” vs “No Thanks” priority list.
The scouting department has been busy & BA/Licht smoke screening…The media plugging picks, while Licht plugging roster spots that the media pimping in mocks… (While Suh & JPP still UFA & no one talking up Bucs to draft DT or Edge @ #27??? Makes no sense to me!)
Maybe the Bucs move up, maybe they move down…Maybe the stay at #27…Oh the Draft Drama Cray season!!
By #27…Pretty much count on all the A+/A prospects being gone by the time Bucs on clock…Unless some guys fall over “insert background issue / medical risk here”…It’ll be a crap shoot!
I’d expect 1st be Edge / OT / CB & WR heavy…+ 2-3 of QB, DT & IOL & maybe 1 RB/ S off the board before Bucs are on the clock….Who’s left on the board at that point?? Who’s the best fit? Is someone calling & can you get better value dealing??? Is there bold move to be made that’s worth going up & spending capital to get your guy???
“”\_(*&*)_/”” Who knows…I just hope the FO finds a handful of contributors by the end of Day3!
April 7th, 2022 at 10:10 pm
Since BA came onboard, we’ve had a pretty distinct pattern for drafting CB. Tall and fast. They’ve shown preference toward developmental athletes. I don’t think this FO would draft CDIII the prospect today tbh. Even with the same GM. Like they wouldn’t draft Stewart now. I’ve assumed that’s as much Bowles influence as anything. So my bet would be if we draft CB it will be Zyon McCollum or Tariq Woolen in the 2nd/3rd. Kaiir Elam being way more likely at 27 for us than Gordon, imo.
April 7th, 2022 at 10:30 pm
The drafting shift at CB has been consistent since BA/Bowles joined the team. They have drafted tall fast CBs. Developmental athletes with physical traits. So it is way more likely we would draft Kaiir Elam than Gordon at 27. Though if we go CB, I think it would be Zyon McCollum or Tariq Woolen in the 2nd/3rd.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:02 pm
He’s on the smaller side at 5’11 and he opted not to run the 40 again at his pro day which tells me he knows he’s slow (for a corner). Hell no I don’t want this dude.
April 7th, 2022 at 11:53 pm
A one year starting CB from the PAC-12 with a first round pick? Eff no
