Glazer Liquidity And Tom Brady’s Next Contract

When Bucco Bruce Arians already knew he was stepping down as head coach of the Bucs, he oddly sat down for an extensive interview with NFL.com reporter Steve Wyche — and didn’t mention it.
Within 48 hours, Arians was calling Todd Bowles to give him the job.
Wyche was on the other end of a microphone yesterday on 98.7 FM in Arizona and was asked about Arians’ big decision. There were no great revelations from Wyche, but he did note that he went back to listen to his Arians interview after Arians quit the Bucs head coaching gig to see if anything stood out.
“He was fully behaving like he was going to be the head coach,” Wyche said, but he added that Arians never actually talked about coaching the team but did speak about how it was “set up.”
Wyche joked that Arians covering up his secret didn’t have to happen. “Yeah, me and Bruce need to have a talk about that. Because I’m going to be like, ‘Look, man, you could have said, No,” Wyche said of the interview.
One thing Wyche discussed on radio particularly piqued Joe’s interest, and that was how the buzz among owners at the NFL Owners meetings last week was all about the Deshaun Watson contract. It’s a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million deal. So, per NFL rules, Wyche said that means the Browns must put $230 million in escrow.
Many owners aren’t that liquid, Wyche said, and the contract precedent Watson set could become problematic for teams because of the escrow rules.
So what about Team Glazer?
What if Tom Brady is telling the Bucs behind the scenes, “Give me more than Aaron Rodgers and Watson, three years for $155 million guaranteed and I’ll extend my contract today. If I retire before the contract ends, then you won’t have to pay me for that season(s).”
Joe’s wondering if that hypothetical scenario — and the $155 million Team Glazer would have to cough up in cash — would be an issue for the Bucs.
Joe just hopes/prays that Brady extends his contract. The circus that would ensue if Brady was playing out the final year of Bucs contract would be an annoying and potentially unsettling distraction for fans, players and coaches.

I don’t understand why so many posts here about Brady wanting more money.
It’s all relative. Brady still gets paid. The salary cap will be skyrocketing with TV deals. If he wants to keep playing, he’ll need a new contract. No reason for him to not take market value. He can always adjust to help the team after the contract is signed. –Joe
Contract money was never the most important for him. He knows SBs get you more money and fame than a contract. You could say he is negotiating to put his brand in the negotiation, but salary? No, forget it.

Stupid, it would ruin our franchise and league and Tommy would rather retire then ruin his legacy for money. He cares too much about how he is viewed when he rides into the sunset to play for a historically terrible franchise deprived of any chance to bring in talent due to salary cap hell. But then again we may be in salary cap hell anyways so why not have Brady and no one else

If the Saints can keep going with their cap problems, Light and company can handle it.

An agent finally got a desperate owner to do the unthinkable.
To Guarantee a quarter of a Billion dollars to a player.
I mean every player is 1 play away from it being his last play, and to guarantee a quarter of a Billion dollars, this is not golf, but a highly violent contact sport.
We will see just how it plays out. The Ravens owner was not happy right away when the news was made public.
Needless to say, the Browns owners are feeling a certain chill when around other owners right now.

Brady’s not going to do that… and if he did, he’d be crippling the team… he has always played at a lower contract value than he could have asked for so the team around him would be better. One of the things that makes him different.

We’ll see how good Brady is when he has no weapons like he did his last year in New England. Brady never had done this so the hypothetical is silly and he knows he can’t do this and compete. We’ll see how good Aaron rodgers really is too now that he got his money.

The two teams where the QB’s are making 40-50 million lost their top receivers. You have to ask yourself did the WR make the QB or did the QB make the receiver? We will find out this year. I wouldn’t lay a dime on the Packers or the Chiefs.

The Glazers aren’t the problem, it’s the cap. Right now we don’t even have enough room to fit Suh and Gronk. We have to wait till June 1st and do some twisting and maneuvers to make it work.
No way we can afford $150 million dollar QB right now. Unless he wants to say good bye to his weapons next year. I mean look at Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have many playmakers left. Adams is gone. Packers won’t be anywhere near as good as they have been in recent years.

Honestly, I would like to see the Glazers offer Brady partnership and offer him a chance to buy into a minority stake in the team. If he wants to play as a owner/player it would undoubtedly help with the cap (longshot $1 contract). When he is ready to retire, groom him as a coach or GM. His talents, competitiveness, passion of the game are priceless, and go far beyond that of just a player. I want him on our team… in any role he is willing to commit to playing. Just my two cents.

Brady initially retired because of family considerations. Not the B.S. “can’t work with Arians” narrative.
He came back to help set up Bowles and other assistants for success – help out the organization And because he wants to play but needed a good sell for his family which the helping out Bowles narrative accomplishes.
I admit critics will say it’s a sappy theory, but it makes more sense to me than the sinister media narrative.
After this year, family pressures on Brady to retire will be tremendous plus his home in South Florida will be ready…

In the end they all care about the dollars. Brady was willing to take the Drew Brees deal with the Patriots. Two years, fifty million, guaranteed. It was his way of both acquiescing to the historically cheap Robert Kraft, and securing his retirement with the organization. It was far less than he could’ve asked for. In the end Kraft sided with belichick. It was a horrible mistake, one that Kraft probably laments.
I’m of the mind that this is Brady’s last year with the bucs, win or lose. The Brady’s next destination will be Miami. The dolphins didn’t trade the farm and the bank for Tyreek hill, to have tua throwing five yards behind him.

BTW, enough with this cap NONSENSE!!! How do the saints go from sixty million over to suddenly tens of millions under? It’s crazy. They cleared the books because they were in the Watson sweepstakes. The NFL doesn’t have a salary cap. The NHL, now that’s a cap. No phoney years, no back loaded deals with astronomical hits. Money is flowing into the NFL like never before. Please stop the insanity. I sound like Susan powder, but it’s true. Give me a team with cap trouble, and I’ll fix it on a dinner napkin in ten minutes. I know what you cap believers will say next, someday the bill comes due. That assumes a stagnant cap. If the cap jumps by leaps and bounds, then the bill never does come due. This cap jail fear is rooted in mid 90s mentality, when the cap meant a hell of a lot more than It does today.

I like what the Joe’s were talking about on the last Ira podcast with the Larry Bird rule, or maybe there’s a max contract that qbs can get that doesn’t effect the rest of the cap. It’s just not going to be sustainable with how everything is looking right now to have one guy (albeit the most important guy on the team) take up so much of the cap space on a team and be successful year in and out. Eventually it will catch up, especially with freak injuries and/or poor drafts/free agents.

Agreed Leopold. I think the ONLY solution to this whole QB scenerio in the NFL is that at some point the QB Cap is it’s own separate figure from the rest of the team cap.

The piper comes calling eventually. You can structure creatively and push everything into the future, but then you set up a cycle. Eventually you’ll pay. Also, the intention of the cap is to level the playing field so franchises with more cash can’t dominate by buying players with big $$$ every year. Fiscal discipline and sound strategy in building a team impresses me a lot more than throwing the most money around.

Couple of things…
First, on Brady, this year was the first he actually came close to retiring. If we do not win a ring, I foresee him calling it quits for good. He simply won’t go to the Dolphins or any other team after this year. He’s getting too old to want to switch teams.
Second, Tom Brady is a season ending injury from retirement. A minor injury? No problem. A season ender, at his age,…while I do believe he’ll recover, I don’t see him risking additional permanent damage. He’s smarter than that.
And finally, as to the cap…it will keep rising, but only until it reaches a certain point, because nothing can grow endlessly.
Jason Lict did a masterful job with the cap before and after we got Brady.
This isn’t like the Allen/Gruden years. Licht actually knows how to fill holes in the draft, and he doesn’t do high-risk-massive-cost trades.
Even if he goes all-in, the most downtime we would have is a season afterward…because he adds great you talent each year.
Heck, if he’d had his way, we wouldn’t have drafted Winston OR Mariota. He’d have found a better solution, like trading down and getting first round picks the following year, the hire a vet until the next class came out.
Remember, Licht did not really get handed the reigns until Koetter was fired. That’s when he started making the team better. Team Glazer didn’t want to give up on Winston for a while, but once they did, Licht fixed the QB problem.
Early on, I didn’t like Licht…but he now become an amazing GM.

For Tom, it has never been about the money. He took pay cuts when in New England so that he could win more championships. He doesn’t need the money. If he wins another Superbowl, the endorsements and ad deals will be worth a lot more than a lucrative contract. Also, he building a legacy and a brand. Once he retires, he can use that to keep the income stream coming for decades.

I would think this kind of contractual circumventing of the salary cap might be against the rules, as well as being frowned upon by other owners.
If it happens later, after he’s done, it’s fine… but you can’t dangle outside financial compensation to circumvent. That’s crazy and unethical. It’s basically cheating.

There is Escrow and there is Escrow. With banks and home mortgages it’s all straight forward…the money just sits there.
But with large business deals there is room for negotiation. EG The NFL may allow teams to place that 250 million in US treasury notes which are secure.
The Escrow Agent may invest the Escrow Amount only in such accounts or investments as the Company may specify by written notice.
If the NFL permits it that’s a big deal given that inflation is going to drive up interest rates.
