Stats Say Carlton Davis Is Elite
June 20th, 2022Is Carlton Davis an elite corner? It depends on one’s perspective.
If one judges a cornerback on just picks alone, well, no. Davis is not elite. He may never be if that is the lone criteria. However, if guarding receivers and making sure they don’t catch the ball is the standard, then yeah, Davis is elite.
The PFF tribe believes no one in the past three seasons has forced more incompletions when targeted than Davis. So if Davis is best in this stat, and you gauge corners on how they prevent completions, then Davis truly is an elite corner.
Joe does know that if the Bucs did not re-sign Davis this spring, the secondary would have been in a world of hurt.
Carlton Davis has forced 48 incompletions since the 2019 season

Our old Head coach who just won the Super Bowl as a Defensive coordinator for the Rams says Stats are for Losers.
June 20th, 2022 at 4:10 am
But I do like that stat, nice job Carlton!
June 20th, 2022 at 5:32 am
Davis is a solid CB. Elite CB’s don’t all, including int’s.
June 20th, 2022 at 5:37 am
Catch the would-be interceptions, Carlton. Please and thanks.
June 20th, 2022 at 5:44 am
Clearhouse I miss his press conferences. Time to put underwear on people’s faces.
June 20th, 2022 at 6:46 am
Catch Kupp and Jackson in the two Rams games you played and the 200 first half yards Tyree got on you. Please? He’ll be the first one to tell you how good he is. Stats also made Roger’s MVP.

Hahahahahah. Stats are great, but CD has been a part of a mediocre secondary. We have all watched the games. CD still has T Hill nightmares. I hope he does well, but if he is elite, then that is just saying whats in the league. CD just does not come to mind when I think about Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, Darell Revis. ELITE CORNERS. CD is not in that group, and few are. There are so many throughout the decades that CD is not even near as good as. Sorry, he is not in that group by any stretch. Again, just because you are compared to the current CB”S in the league, that just shows the state of the league, not how great CD is. I as a Buc Fan, yes I hope CD plays well, but no throwing Revlon makeup on the situation.
GO BUCS!!!

Eyeballs say .. meh..

Geniuses abound.
Glad he’s a Buccaneer and Licht is the GM instead of the runtskulls who think they are GMs.

Well, you have to figure that’s part of why Bowles likes these lengthy guys like Dean, Davis, & McCollum at CB in his defensive scheme. You can account for the leverage that comes with being a taller, rangier CB being a fail safe should they get beat off the LOS/through a break as long as the speed is adequate enough.
Davis has been improving year to year since being drafted. While he can improve more discipling his eyes or marrying his abilities to read & react, he’s been a solid CB for us given the fact he and the rest of our secondary get asked to do so much in Bowles scheme. A cleaner bill of health in 2022 will go a long way for what’s still a young, and now more experienced secondary. Elite, good, none of that stuff matters, just do your job more often than you’re getting beat and contribute to what the team is trying to do, which is win.
June 20th, 2022 at 8:41 am
One day all his pass preventions will become Interceptions hopefully.
June 20th, 2022 at 8:53 am
Well, he’s “ours”, so I hope to god he’s elite.
June 20th, 2022 at 8:55 am
Ahhhhhhhhh he may be good, but elite is stretching it.
June 20th, 2022 at 9:12 am
Squeeze that ball a few times cause some game changing plays I’ll give you that elite status
June 20th, 2022 at 9:19 am
If elite means top 10, then Davis fits the bill. Personally, until Davis’ interception rate increases, he’s not a top 5 CB.
June 20th, 2022 at 9:22 am
Elite, to me, is defined by fear. Corners that are SO good, QB’s don’t even bother throwing their side of the field. Someone like Deion Sanders, who was a legit threat to house every pick he caught, and he scared people. Davis is still young so he has some growing / learning before he becomes elite. The good news? If Davis does get a few pick-sixes, he will be feared.
June 20th, 2022 at 9:33 am
Catch the ball….
June 20th, 2022 at 10:15 am
Carlton is a great cornerback. He would be elite if he would catch the dang ball! He and Dean have stone hands.
June 20th, 2022 at 11:15 am
If CD could catch he would probably have 15-16 career interceptions. He has alot of balls hit him right “between the numbers”. The man has rocks for hands.

Not sure that ‘elite’ is the best descriptor for Davis, but he’s mighty good & a definite keeper. Supposedly the top-ranked CB is the Rams’ Jalen Ramsey, so took a look at how the 2 compare.
Davis has been with us for 4 years (2018-2021), and has gotten 3,194 def snaps during that time (reg season) … 799 snaps/yr average. He’s been targeted 354 times & allowed 202 completions (57.1%) in those 4 yrs. He’s also been tagged with 20 TDs allowed & has made 6 INTs in that timeframe.
Ramsey has been in the league since 2016, but to compare apples-to-apples he’s gotten 3,790 def snaps since 2018 (reg season) … 948 snaps/yr average. He’s been targeted 350 times since 2018 and allowed 200 completions (57.1%). He’s been tagged for 9 TDs allowed & has made 10 INTs since 2018 … obviously better in both categories than Davis.
Still, the 2 compare favorably IMO in their respective defenses. Ramsey has better availability in that timeframe, has allowed fewer TDs, made more INTs, but the two have a virtually identical 57.1% completion percentage allowed. Interesting since both of them have been targeted the same number of times over that 4 year period (indicating similar ‘respect’ from opposing DCs?).
As an aside, it’ll be interesting to see if the Bucs give Jamel Dean a big contract also at the end of this season (his stats are even better than Ramsey or Davis over the past 3 yrs). Jamel’s allowed a 53.7% completion rate … better than both of them. He’s only allowed 6 TDs in those 3 yrs (again better than both of them). Very underrated CB IMO who hopefully will have a big year for us.

August 1976 Buc Says:
“CD just does not come to mind when I think about Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, Darell Revis. ELITE CORNERS. CD is not in that group, and few are.”

I really think that the current rule book has more to do with this than anything. You’d be hard pressed to find ANY corners in the league today who seem to be at that level, for this reason. It’s really difficult to compare anyone fairly across that rule book divide.
June 20th, 2022 at 11:57 am
He’s like a faster, skinnier version of OJ Howard
June 20th, 2022 at 11:59 am
Make him do 2 hours a day or catch 500 balls from the Juggs machine WITH OUT GLOVES, and that should help is stone hands.
June 20th, 2022 at 12:07 pm
Good not great.
Lay off the weed and maybe he’ll start making those INTs
June 20th, 2022 at 1:25 pm
LOL, Doosh.
DR, excellent work as always. Where do you always get all these stats so darn quick? Do you have an Excel spreadsheet on your desktop or something? LOL thanks for your input. I, for one, appreciate it.
June 20th, 2022 at 1:41 pm
Yes DR, great info.
Thanks
June 20th, 2022 at 3:01 pm
Good, overpaid player who will probably look like a bargain after next year.
June 20th, 2022 at 3:23 pm
@JoeBucsFan, first you tell us PFF is a joke, then you quote them when it suits your argument.
Davis isn’t an elite corner. He gives up way too much space and is very late getting his head around. Hence the lack of ints. He’s in that second group. Good but not elite.
June 20th, 2022 at 3:34 pm
Davis is a Seatbelt
June 20th, 2022 at 5:25 pm
Davis is elite. I don’t care about picks. Diggs gets lots of picks and he still gets burned pretty regularly. He’s probably our best corner since Ronde
June 20th, 2022 at 6:47 pm
He is not elite far from it
June 20th, 2022 at 8:26 pm
Davis is elite. One of the best CBs in the league.
We are weak opposite him.
Hoping Zion can become the man!
June 20th, 2022 at 9:14 pm
The answer is not really. Not bad, has a lot to prove, and has singe marks all over him from Kupp and the Rams.
