Trading Kyle Trask

Joe will annoy a lot of Bucs fans here. It’s unintentional, but when a team says it’s all-in on winning now, then Joe has to buy-in and explore accountability regarding that statement.
Joe attended the NFL Scouting Combine this month and the implication from the Buccaneers’ power-hitters there was that second-year quarterback Kyle Trask — a second-round draft pick last season — would be the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft.
In other words, Trask would be in high demand right now if he were available; teams would be angling to grab him and looking at moving up to get him near the top-10 picks.
So Joe has to put it out there. If that’s accurate, then Trask probably could fetch a strong second-round pick or a first-rounder right now. He would come to his new team with three years remaining on a very inexpensive contract following a year developing under Tom Brady, Byron Leftwich, Tom Moore, Clyde Christensen and the quarterback whisperer himself, Bucco Bruce Arians.
If Trask’s enhanced value is indeed reality, and the Bucs are really all-in to win in 2022, then Joe would trade Trask in a heartbeat.
Hypothetically, say there is no first-round taker but Seattle is willing to cough up its No. 40 overall pick for Trask (high second-rounder). That would give the Bucs, already with the No. 27 overall pick, fantastic ammo to move up in Round 1 or leapfrog back into Round 1 for an additional first-round choice next month.
Joe finds it hard to believe that’s not worth considering with Tom Brady back on the roster, Arians in love with Blaine Gabbert and nobody knowing how many years Brady will stick around.
Nothing typed here is a referendum on Trask. Nobody knows his capability in NFL game action. But again, if the Bucs are all-in for 2022 and Trask’s market value is inflated to the point where the Bucs could get a true premium draft pick, Joe believes it has to be strongly considered.

I think they should keep all options open, and go all in this year, since Brady will probably be gone after this year.
LOL, I think the Bucs know Brady is history after this year too, and that is the reason they are making all season ticket holders buy 2 years now, instead of one.

If we could get at least a 2nd rounder, why not. But I highly doubt that is the case! I would not trade him for anything less, unless the coaching staff is not sold on him at all. But if thats the case, thats the true definition of a bad return on an investment! I mean we do need pass rushing enforcements, and this is a deep class. Once again Bucco Arians is called a QB guru, but who has he really developed in his nfl career? I’m by no means an Arians hater, just stating a fact. I’ll wait…

Teams say a lot of positive about all players on their roster until they are gone. A month ago Arians was telling the world that Gabbert was a gifted player and would be happy to have him under center in 2022.
Nobody was buying that and if they put Trask on the trading block they would be lucky to get a 4th rounder. They would be admitting he’s not that special and teams would pay accordingly.

Even quarterbacks taken very late in the second round like Trask was are worth their weight in gold. Brady has proven to be fickle concerning his retirement and subsequent un-retirement, so I would need at least a first round pick. Not saying Trask is Steve Young, but we gave him away to the niners for a measly second long ago.

If teams would be willing to go into the top 10 for his this draft, then I would take either a top 20 first round draft pick for him, or keep him. We drafted the kid for a reason.

Yep you’re right it would annoy Bucs fans and I disagree. Brady is the goat but he’s also no reliable in terms of how long he will play. Being all in to me means going on a run for many years not just one or two
In the Unlikely event someone at the TOP of the first or second round wanted to give up that pick I’d take it because if not they’d be saying Trask is the long term answer me rounders no thanks there’s no guarantee that pick won’t be the next mj Stewart or vh3.

If I had to guess, I’d say that Trask is probably worth a mid to late 4th Round pick. It might be better for the Bucs to just keep him, if that’s the case. He could develop into a decent backup QB, which has some value to the Bucs since the starter is up there in years.

For a first he should be traded unless from what they saw he will take over team in 2023 as a true franchise QB. You never trade a franchise QB even if you have a Brady.
No one but coaches and Brady really know if Trask can be a future franchise QB.

Looks like Jimmy G will be cut as only cost 49er 1.4m, and they need cap space. No one will trade for him, I’d like to bring Jimmy G here on a back up contract under Brady, that would really light Brady’s motivation, hed probably win 2 more SB if Jimmy G was signed. Haha

This is another classic Joe hypothetical. Pretty ludicrous. One of these days, maybe one of your hypotheticals will come to fruition. So far you’re about 0 for 8000.
Playing along, it’s simple. Two conditions have to be met:
1) The Bucs don’t really see Trask as QBOF. We don’t know what they really think — we only know the reports we hear which are very positive. Could be all hype and the usual positive coach talk.
2) Some other team would have to believe he’s worthy of a #1 pick. Nobody did last year. Why would they think that this year? I suppose some QB needy team may have had him highly rated last year but wasn’t in a position to take him, but is willing to move on it now.
Honestly, I still think it’s insane unless they’ve been lying to us about what they see in him. A decent backup QB can win you a couple of games if your starter goes down for a short period. A crap backup might lose those games and that could be the difference in playoff seeding, home field advantage, or no playoffs at all.

Brady does not like the true competition at backup, but Jimmy G did truely motivate another dynasty as a new chip on Brady shoulder.
Currently Brady main chip is destroying NE, I think he would lose a SB if it meant keeping Bill out of the playoffs and forcing Bill from playoffs and that’s why he wanted to play for Miami, much harder conference but he could play a few years and beat up Mac Jones and Bill until Bill retired.

Joe, you’ve lost your mind on this one. Brady is 45. We drafted Trask to develop him for a couple years to be ready when Brady is gone. With Brady returning for 1 more year that plan is right on track. So, you suggest we then trade away that commodity? And when Brady leaves after this year we sit here Quarterbackless and watch another team reap the rewards from our development of Trask. I can already hear your argument that we got a late first rounder for him. What are we going to get with that; a solid left guard. Then next year when Brady leaves we’re desperate to trade 3 firsts and two starters for the next drama queen who’s unhappy with their situation. No, No, No!!!! Stop hating on Trask! The coaching staff seams to believe in him and for that reason so do I and so should you. There’s a reason someone would happily give up a first round pick for him and celebrate it.

Unless your crack team of NFL lifers like Bruce, Jason, Clyde, Tom Moore etc all think he’s going to be really good. We haven’t seen Trask throw a pass since pre-season where he was set up to fail with how bad those dudes were. They see him every day at practice, in the meeting rooms, in the weight room and know far better than the average Joe what you need to see. If they think he is a dude, then you don’t make that trade. Absolutely not. We drafted him last year and we could have gotten a playmaker at that spot. Yea we are all in bit the bucs drafted him in the second when we were all in last year for a reason. This kid is the really deal. We have mortgaged enough and can continue to mortgage by further more manipulating the cap (Smith, David,). Hold trask for the future.

I am certainly willing to grow with Trask just like growing with any QB. I have No idea if he has it or not. However he isn’t going to play back up to Brady this year, so if the Bucs can bring in a piece that can contribute to weaker area on the roster this season, I am all in , that is the way of the NFL these days, tge horizon is one season at a time.

If someone is willing to offer a first if they are that hungry for a QB (especially if it is a future first), you’d have to seriously entertain the deal. Think about it: No. 64 overall pick for a first-rounder? That’s a helluva return on an investment.
And with that future pick perhaps you get a quarterback in a better draft class. Win/wih.

Carson Wentz did not even go for a second round pick. All teams have to do is read Joe’s articles about how “4th stringer Kyle Trask” (incorrect) couldn’t “beat out” Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin for QB2 and that’s all they need to know.
That being said, if anyone was crazy enough to offer a 1st rounder for Trask the Bucs should take that. It just wouldn’t happen. And if someone did think Trask was that valuable and he turned out to be so, then the Bucs will have lost that trade and have no viable plan in motion for Brady’s inevitably soon retirement.

We don’t know what brady is going to do after this season. This another opportunity for Trask to continue to train and learn under brady and maybe play in a few games when we are way ahead on the score board. Trask is only making rookie money so its best to see how he does on a few games to see where he stands with this team. If he is traded and is a big success with another team everyone is going to kick themselves for letting him go.

None of us outside know what Christensen really thinks about Trask. None of us outside have seen Trask practice within the past 6 months.
The idea of trading away Trask makes sense if they really don’t like what they see. And from what limited appearances he’s had (publicly), he is a mixed bag at best. Trade him now for someone like Pickett, and it’s a win. But then the other question is, who would want Trask?
Could they trade him, plus some other asset (Johnson, Darden) for a young veteran with clear potential, such as Mike White from the Jets?
Most likely, Trask ain’t moving. He’s going to practice, watch, hold the clip board and probably wind up being a backup for the next two seasons.

I’m in awe Joe, you’ve done it again. Managed to create a silly scenario, get some JBFers riled up, AFTER starting this piece with those heartfelt words … ‘IT’S UNINTENTIONAL’. Of course it is. So was WWII.
Aaron Rodgers sat on the Packers’ bench for THREE years before Brett Favre moved on & he got a chance to start in his FOURTH year (2008). Now under your scenario Joe, the Pack should’ve traded him in one of those first 3 years for a high draft pick so that they could go all-in with an aging Favre. After all, Rodgers had been picked #24 in the 2005 draft (the year the Bucs chose Cadillac Williams at #5), and wasn’t nearly as good as Alex Smith (chosen #1 in that draft, and whose record was 11-19 with SF by Rodgers’ 4th year). Obviously Rodgers was destined to be a loser.
Reality is that none of us know what we have in Kyle Trask. He MAY be the next Aaron Rodgers OR he MAY be the next Ryan Leaf. I trust however that BA & the gang have better insight into his POTENTIAL than I do. In the meantime, TBChucky said it best … ‘Drinking early, huh Joe?’

Trask would not get more than a fifth round pick if the Bucs put him on the trade block every team would know hes trash not Trask. Other than Seattle or Carolina theres no other team that needs one. I think the quarterback whisperer is a myth. I mean the second round pick was on the inactive list all year. I think Licht made the pick and Arians don’t want to be bothered with developing him and Leftwhich doesn’t know how.

The Bucs currently have a very good prospect for the future in Trask AND for the cheap the next 3 yrs. Why not let him watch and learn from the greatest qb that has ever played the game for another season? Don’t trade away the future, build it through the draft because eventually the cap fairy is gonna come calling wanting paid. The theory of trading Trask for a 1st rounder is solid. However, it only would’ve worked had the Bucs had him as their solid #2 QB all of last year. That would’ve left other franchises with the feeling that the Bucs had confidence in him. The fact that he never even dressed down on game day….for the entire year, undoubtedly leaves the impression on other franchises that it was a “redshirt” season and he’s not ready for the big-time yet. It seems everything Joe Bucs Fan writes it has involved with the trade whenever a guy hasn’t even given the chance to prove himself. I don’t think there’s any underlying conditions I just think that they were grooming him.

If it could nab them another pick in the 1st or 2nd, and they don’t think he’s the future, go for it.
A lot of DBs, WRs, and D lineman throughout the first couple rounds of this draft.
If They see a lot of potential and think he’s the future, then no.

I would not trade Trask for a single 2nd rounder. If he is that valuable that he would be a top 10 pick this year, I ask for a 1st and a 4th, or a 2nd and a 3rd. Perhaps the Bucs have a need and know a team that has a player that would fulfill that need and could still get a draft pick.
If the Bucs are trading him they do not believe in him. I think they do and even if you are all in on winning a Super Bowl, a team cannot ignore the future. Brady said said he would play until 45 but could play until 50. But Brady is still playing on ‘Borrowed Time’ (Styx) with ‘Father Time’ (Stratovarius).

NO trade.Trask was taken in the second round for a reason last year. Now we want to trade him away for another unknown in the 2nd? Everything that has come out of the coaches mouths is that Trask is performing as hoped for. If that’s true, why throw him away for a possible flop? They saw something in the kid when they went and got him. I will trust in our coaching staff on this one.

Sorry, Joe, but this article is just “click bait.” I did read it mainly to see how folks rated Kyle Trask. I watched him at Florida and was very impressed with his coolness, intelligence and, yes, his arm. IMO he’s a keeper.

And let’s be honest Brady ain’t coming back after this year and I’m starting to believe the Miami story a little bit because Gronk haven’t signed yet. And Gronk said doesn’t want to play with no other quarterback but Brady.

This seems like it’s written to stir the pot. You have to be out of your mind if a team is going to draft a guy @ 64th and trade him before he’s played at snap. Give another case where that has happened anywhere, ever, that didn’t involve the guy getting in trouble. That’s rare, really rare, Joe. And extremely unlikely even if a 1st round pick was offered. AND he’s a cheap backup QB right now.

If the Bucs were to trade Brady to the Dolphins (which I don’t see this being true) then I’d want Xavier Howard Byron Jones & a couple picks in return at least. Get at least one of the CBs in return.

Makes a lot of sense. Remember Josh Rosen, a hotshot draft prospect from UCLA, drafted 10th overall by the Cardinals in 2018. One year later, after drafting Kyle Murray, the Cardinals traded Rosen to the Dolphins for second and fifth-round picks. Trask is not a first-round pick, and unlike Rosen did not suck, because he did not play, maintaining his value -somewhat like a new undriven car that depreciates once it’s driven off the lot. A second-round pick would be a good value. I would be fine signing Andy Dalton to play side-kick to Brady for (at least a year) and turn the second-round pick into an everyday player.

Posey99 – you say you never heard of a second-round pick who never played and was traded to another team? Ever hear of Brett Favre? Second-round pick of the Falcons in 1991. He attempted four passes in his rookie year and was traded to the Packers for a first-round pick the following year. Not playing Trask diminishes his value. Bucs probably would had him compete to start, but given that Brady is back, Bucs can now evaluate if they are better off signing someone like Dalton for the league minimum and find a taker for Trask in exchange for a pick that becomes a regular.

If he truly grades as the top 2022 qb equivalent, then
1. Good draft pick in 2021 by the bucs, not a mistake at all

This writer gets worst as he writes more articles on Kyle Trask and he will not stop until he sees that he is traded. Trading Trask without even given him a chance to play a season at least is irrational. I have never seen a writer be so negative or disliking a player without even taking a snap in NFL.
All we know Trask was a star at Florida and no one can sees the future. Last time I checked the best 2021 drafted QB was MacJones who is not mobile but accurate as Trask. In fact Trask is more mobile than MacJones. Watch his SEC Championship game. What happened to all running 2021 drafted qb’s ? They all laid eggs. Last year they played Trask in pre-season with fourth stringers to fail. I hope they play him as QB2 this year so he can learn valuable lessons and snaps.
