Ronald Jones Officially Lands In Kansas City

March 26th, 2022

Ira, I’m outta here and now you can’t pester me anymore.”

That didn’t take long.

Bucs free agent running back Ronald Jones visited the Chiefs earlier this week and now he has a shiny one-year contract in Kansas City, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

It’s an impressive endorsement for RoJo to have the AFC juggernaut give him a thumbs up with their Hall of Fame head coach. And it wasn’t a garbage deal. NFL Network reports that RoJo  can earn up to $5 million with incentives.

RoJo has averaged 4.5 yards per carry over the past three seasons and has 17 rushing touchdowns in that time, plus playoff experience. Still just 24 years old, the Bucs’ 2018 second-round pick has a world of talent but bad hands and not the greatest head.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can raise his game with the Chiefs. Joe will be watching.

Good luck, RoJo! And good luck protecting the football when Lavonte David comes for you later this season.

Bye! Maybe he will learn to catch and block under Reid.

  2. NCBucfan Says:

True definition of a one trick pony! Always telegraphed to the defense when he was on the field.

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

He was fun to watch when he ran the ball. Violent and sudden. But not a Mensa candidate by any means.

  4. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

i think he’ll do really well in that system. They will run more this year which given what they lost (Hill) really isn’t a revelation.

  5. ChiBuc Says:

Let’s see if he can finally get some coaching/opportunities. He is 24 years old… I’m sure all of you peaked professionally and mentally by the ripe old age of 24.

  6. Bucs&Bolts Says:

    GL rojo you’ll need it

  7. Anonymous Says:

I’ll really miss RoJo’s uncanny knack for self-preservation. His stepping out of bounds to avoid those punishing hits before the first down markers is a rare ability unmatched by any League running back, current or retired. Jaw-dropping plays.

  8. VSyl Says:

This guy lacks the hardest trait to train, motivation. Not even Brady was able to motivate this guy into elevating his game.

  9. Bucs Guy Says:

He wasn’t a fit here. Kind of soft. Biggest games against the worst teams.

  10. Bojim Says:

    Good luck!

  11. Beeej Says:

guy has the most incredible acceleration I’ve ever seen, hope he does ok there

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bummer. I was really hoping he would come back.

Oh well, time to move on. Good luck, Rojo…see you in the Superbowl when we beat your new team!

  13. gp Says:

Never reached the peak of his ability here. Whether because he was mis-used, under-utilized, or simply lacked motivation, we may never know. But one thing for sure, I’m really sick of the trope that he had hands of stone. Some of his biggest yardage gains were made receiving, and this is one area where I, personally, think he was under-utilized. Just my armchair coaching opinion.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    NCBucfan Says
“Bye! Maybe he will learn to catch and block under Reid.”

The blocking is a valid thing to hold against him…but he actually improved on catching the ball the past two years. The Bucs just had someone better and more experienced.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bet he pulls a Legarret Blount and explodes there.

  16. NCBucfan Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai, I def can’t see the Chiefs making it to the SB this year. The AFC is just too damn loaded. It’s possible, but I honestly can’t even see them winning their division.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Sometimes you guys are the worst. Berating those who leave us. So I’ll just say, Good luck Ro Joe. Thanks for your contributions to the Buc Nation. You are going to a good team. Wish the best for you.

  18. The Coroner Says:

I feel sad for you that seem to be only capable of venom. I hop RoJo helps lead the Chiefs to the playoff where the Bengals do a Buc’s job of whippin’ their arses.

  19. NCBucfan Says:

I mean besides the Jets, Texans, and jags, literally every team is a contender in the AFC! It’s a good time to be in the NFC!

  20. NCBucfan Says:

I’m actually glad we are playing the Chiefs! The slimy Saints have to play the Raiders, Lol

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

If Ron plays like he did for the Bucs (subpar in several aspects of his game), I have doubts that he makes their team.

  22. catcard202 Says:

RoJo needed a change of scenery & Bucs seemed ready to let him move on….So, both side win in this departure.

Landing in KC is nice for him & offers another chance at chasing a SB in 2022. The 1yr prove it offers him a chance to reboot his career…& isn’t terrible coin.

Now, the FO “should” be committed to going RB on Day3 or UDFA route to back fill his spot on the roster. (Unless Breece Hall is setting there @ #60).

  23. WillieG Says:

I only remember two plays from his entire time here. His long TD run and him running out of bounds one yard short of the first down. I remember that many Fournette plays from one game.

  24. NCBucfan Says:

I still would much rather a TE in the 3rd or 4th, rather than a back. One that actually develops, unlike the guy that is now a Bill.

  25. SB~LV Says:

He’ll have fun playing in that stadium!

  26. NCBucfan Says:

SB LV, won’t be much fun for their fans when he whiffs on a block and gets Mahomes injured.

  27. Jimmy deez Says:

I always liked him and his big play ability,he will prob have a good year if giving opportunities, and like Kwon to San Fran he doesn’t have to change his hair color

  28. Robert Says:

Wish him well. I agree with bonsai…..bet he does well there

  29. Biff Barker Says:

Nice soft landing for RoJo. Ironic he’s taking his SB ring won from KC back o KC.
He’s got a clean slate with Andy Reid until Mahomes gets killed
    .

  30. Elita Vita Says:

Rojo has had one foot out the door for some time now. Always a positive when a team shows they desires you and gives you a contract. Good luck Rojo I believe you gave it all you could but time for your “new start”

  31. HC Grover Says:

Bad luck in Munich. No I will not wish good luck to a competitor. I hope he fumbles against the Bucks.

  32. Biff Barker Says:

NCBuc, agree, we need to draft a TE over RB. Good thing is RB’s are easier to find. it Looks like Gio is a slam dunk now. Maybe a late round RB or UDFA.
    .

  33. HC Grover Says:

May Plan 9 tackle him for a 10 yard loss, a fumble and 9 takes it off for a score. Hope he become wrong way ROJO.

  34. SPARKY Says:

The Chiefs don’t run every running play up the middle. In K.C. we’ll get to see what he can do on the outside.

  35. Jmarkbuc Says:

Pass pro not such a big deal with twinkle toes Mahomes in the backfield.. Rojo might do alright there..

  36. lambchop Says:

A consolation prize for KC, anyone in their right mind would have wanted 4nette over RoJo with both of them being FAs. That’s why this deal is happening now.

  37. Bucsfan4ever Says:

    Good luck, Rojo.

  38. AlvaFan Says:

Good point Jmarkbuc RoJo wil probably tear it up with KC

  39. JA Says:

First time I’ve seen a guy rush for five yards a carry who was described as soft. Some here embrace misery as though it was their deity of choice.
I liked Jones and think he was never given a fair shot. I don’t care who you are, if you know one screw up relegates you to the end of the bench it will mess with your head, especially when your counterpart is granted far more mistakes than you.
    Lenny is lovable.
R.J. often appears melancholic and shows traits of a stoic loner.
Lenny speaks his mind and Jones rarely speaks.
R.J.’s signing with the Chiefs will be a good coaching juxtaposition between Arians and Reid. And I think Jones will have more leeway with the latter.
Only time will tell if that leeway elevates production.
In the end, Lenny wins this battle, as he should. But Jones is far from the bum some of you make him out to be.
I wish him the best … except when he squares off against his former team.

  40. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Sorry Joe , but ROJO does not have bad hands if you think Lenny has good hands. Comparing ROJO and Lennys dropped pass percentage per target over their careers lays bare the truth – Lenny and ROJO have almost identical dropped pass numbers.
For whatever reason , BA did not like Jones , and it showed. Jones will forever hold the Bucs record for longest rushing TD and is a very explosive runner. ROJO will do well in KC.

  41. Mort Says:

    AMF!

  42. cmurda Says:

Always pulled for ROJO but he’s mentally weak and it will always hamper him. Enough talent to be a top 10 back but sadly never will. I’ll still pull for him and wish him the best.

Anyway, Lightning suck right now. Where are the Bolts. Get this last 10 games poser team off the ice and give me my Bolts back. I digress.

  43. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Liked ROJO, and he was great runner, as an earlier commenter noted his acceleration was awesome and he was a hard runner, main draw back is if he was the field it was clear we were running the ball or faking the run for a pass.

  44. Daryl Green Says:

    So what🤙🏾

  45. Rob Says:

Hated his ducking out of bounds just before the 1st down marker. Bye! Go Bucs

  46. Allbuccedup Says:

KC says bye to Darrell Williams and signs Rojo. We should pick up Darrell Williams not that good of a runner but good hands 47 catches in a reserve roll.

  47. Ron says Says:

This will allow Vaughn to elevate and justify us drafting an RB and bringing back Bernard and possibly even Bell as I would like to see how Brady would utilize those 2 Backs. This would give us a good selection in preseason to establish the best mixture for the games.

  48. BradyBucs Says:

ROJO WILL RUSH FOR OVER 1,000+ YARDS.

Hes only 24 and is a solid runner. He never got enough carries to get into the flow of a game.

He had his struggles with catching the ball but showed plenty of talent with his video, acceleration, and running toughness.

The coaches and Brady’s love for Lenny is the only reason Rojo never fully developed.

Mark my words, he’ll become a stud rusher in the NFL.

  49. gotbbucs Says:

Jones stepped out of bounds a yard short of the 1st down marker on a 1st down run, setting up a 2nd & 1. The offensive coordinator should have been patting him on the back for that. You can’t ask for a better down and distance to call a play on. Other than that play, Jones ran his a$$ off and ran hard. Twice as hard as Fournette.
You’d have to be an absolute idiot to call Ronald Jones a soft runner and call Leonard Fournette a hard nose runner. Jones carried defenders and broke tackles, Fournette 9/10 stops on contact on runs up the middle and plays opossum.
Arians and Leftwich were idiots for not taking better advantage of having two good running backs.
Ronald Jones will do well in KC, just wait.p

  50. NCBucfan Says:

BradyBucs, Jones had every chance to take the reigns as the main back. If you recall, fournette was about to leave at the end of the 2020 season for lack of touches. Jones blew multiple blocking assignments that could’ve got Brady hurt! That’s when Lenny went back in favor, and became the playoff Lenny we always remember. Don’t get me wrong, Jones is a great pure runner, but he is no means an every down back!

  51. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Cmurda

Agreed. His problem was from the neck up.

  52. Brandon Says:

Interesting seeing the people that have never played football give their evaluations of Ronald Jones. Probably the same people that think Lia Thomas should swim with the XX chromosomers

  53. Oxycodoms Says:

Holmgren will be the neck up with his play calling for ronald jones he didnt have that here

  54. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He could never block, or catch very well, and nearly got Brady killed many times.
He is an old school pure running back, and that he does pretty well.
I wish him well in KC.

  56. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Brandon

This is a fan site. Fans come to parse players, coaches etc. etc, No requirement that they be former athletes, or be exactly correct. You don’t want that canceled, right?

    There’s a million political sites.

  57. David Says:

    Good luck to him.

  58. NCBucfan Says:

Brandon, It’s called constructive criticism. Merely stating what we have witnessed on the field. Some of the greatest coaches didn’t even play college or pro football. Sorry and sh@@ if it offends you.

  59. gotbbucs Says:

Newsflash: Lenny Fournette doesn’t have soft hands that catch the ball clean every time either.

Joe used to call Mike Evans “K-Y hands”, so I’m never amazed at the lack of education here sometimes.

  60. Cleanhouse Says:

I would have liked to keep RoJo- another failure of coaching imagination and ability in my opinion.

  61. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I’ll always remember that 98 yard run.
I liked how he saw someone catching up on the jumbo tv screen and made a last second adjustment cut.

  62. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cleanhouse: Yes, it’s always 100% on the coaches. They probably never told Ron he needed to pass protect, or even how to do it. Right?

  63. NCBucfan Says:

Joe in Michigan, exactly. Maybe Leftwhich should’ve had an earpiece in his ear, so he could yell block when it was time. Lol

  64. Joe in Michigan Says:

NCBucfan: I often found myself yelling at the TV when Ron was in the game. I guess he didn’t hear me to “Get the 1st Down before running out of bounds/catch the damn ball/quit fumbling/block that guy!”. Ron and OJ were habitual screwups in their time with the Bucs, IMHO.

  65. NCBucfan Says:

Yep, I mean, I wish him well. But, he will def be the change of pace back to Clyde edwards-helaire, who is def more of a duel threat.

  66. Roy T. Buford Says:

He’s yet another guy who hasn’t developed well enough to live up to his draft number. Given a 1 year deal, KAN seems to also agree. After 4 years as a RB he is likely already at his prime. Most don’t go for as long a time in the NFL as other positions. Yeah, guys like AP are an exception. RoJo is not quite what Doug Martin was, so I guess that’s enough said.

  67. Buccos Says:

Rojo is a Super Bowl Champ and played some good football that year for the Bucs. I am almost certain that he will rush for 1,000 yards this year. He is a great downfield runner. Even better than Fournette in that regard.

  68. Aceofaerospace Says:

If I had to choose, I would’ve chosen Fournette 10 out of 10 times over Rojo.

  69. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Good luck RoJo.
Thanks for the blood & sweat…
and your part in a Championship.

See ya in the Super Bowl.

  70. cmurda Says:

Agreed Joe in MI. It was the same problems constantly. No improvement in their weaknesses. You want guys committed to their craft. You don’t hear anybody questioning Donovan. That dude is committed and a stud. It took a bit to realize it with Donovan probably because of his grounded, quiet personality. But, it became obvious. There has been ample time for those two guys and it’s just not happening. This isn’t a case of sour grapes because I certainly wish them the best but Licht going in another direction makes sense right now. The 1 year commitments by their respective teams also suggests the risk that comes with them.

  72. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, I wish him well, too (except vs. the Bucs).

  73. adam from ny Says:

rojo is going to do well there…

he will run while clyde edward hillary, or whatever his name is, will be the soft handed receiving back…

rojo will run hard there and you can’t stack the box vs mahommes

  74. steele Says:

Congrats to RoJo. He’s going to be great for KC. A different system will probably highlight his strengths more than this coaching staff could.

Unless they bring in another feature back, like right now, the roster will be sorely lacking in the kind of explosiveness RoJo had. Lenny doesn’t have it, and never will.

Vaughn shows flashes, and all we can do is hope he has a huge jump in development.

Sad that you’re looking at Kenjon Barner, anyone, for contributions.

  75. SOEbuc Says:

Resigned Lenny. Rojo has become a better down hill runner chewing up yards but that won’t work on a BA Brady offense.

  76. Joe in Michigan Says:

Steele: Do you think the season starts tomorrow? Why are you bringing up Barner?

  77. JimmyJack Says:

If you dont know why RoJo arent here just look up Tom Brady highlights but watch what Leonard is doing. Sticking block after block on many of our Biscuit plays to Evans Chris and Gronk.

Ronald cant do what we need from our RB. Thats all there’s to it.

And please dont be foolish about how superior Leonard is as a pass catcher. Ronald is very unnatural and its glaring obvisous. It takes him forever to catch a darn pass and turn it upfield…….by the time hes getting tackled Fournette is 2 steps ahead picking up valuable yards.

On some plays you can read the zone, read the pressure and get to the same spot Brady is looking for……several times making extremly difficult grabs. Ronald isnt half the reciever Fournette is. That thought is laughable.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

And its not hating Ronald. If he can find his way as a top back in a balanced offense I think he will do quite well.

Bucs dont want balance. We wanna sling it. Ronald just dont bring enough to the table to be worth millions for us.

I liked what I saw from the few runs Vaugh has had but he has a mental block he needs to get over with drops.

  79. Rod Munch Says:

Doesn’t seem like a great fit since Reid wants his running backs to be able to catch the ball — but as just a pure runner, Rojo is really good. Had he went somewhere like Tennessee and got a chance to play he would put up huge numbers.

Well assuming he didn’t completely flake out.

  80. Buczilla Says:

I have no sympathy for pouty players who run out of bounds, but there were times when Rojo ran with grit and authority. Good luck dude, just not against us.
