Logan Ryan Is A Win-Now Move

If you believe the Bucs’ recent move to force new season ticket buyers to purchase two years’ worth of tickets or none at all is a direct signal that Tom Brady will not play another season in Tampa Bay, then the Bucs are clearly in a win-now mode.
And that would explain why the Bucs signed defensive back Logan Ryan.
One reason Ryan was unemployed is his former employer had a win-later mindset. That’s the word from Giants beat guy Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com. In a feature where Rosenblatt tried to “make sense” of the Giants letting Ryan go, Rosenblatt offered several logical reasons, including the Giants simply didn’t expect Ryan to be on the roster when the new regime finally gets things turned around.
The Giants defense got worse when Ryan was cut on Thursday. That’s not debatable. And since the move clears more cap space next year than in 2022, it’s clear this was a move made for next year, not 2022.
Another very interesting reason Rosenblatt offered for Ryan getting cut is the new Giants regime believes Ryan was too close to former Giants coach Joe Judge.
Ryan was a very popular and influential locker room figure, Rosenblatt noted. So Joe will do the math and add up that the Giants might have been scared Ryan would poison the locker room against new Giants coach Brian Daboll.
There is nothing in Ryan’s past to suggest he’s a clubhouse lawyer. But it is clear Ryan is coming to the Bucs to both chase a ring and because he is tight with Tom Brady.
Rosenblatt also noted that while some self-appointed football sophists (coughPFFtribecough) may think Ryan is over the hill, Ryan produced well last year on a team in disarray.

I like the move! On paper anyway, I think we have gotten better!
Our new Guard is a much better run blocker than Cappa, and our new receiver will do great, with Brady throwing to him.
It sure looks like the balance of power in the NFL has really shifted to the AFC.
The Rams have been a problem for us, but they have been weakened, so IMHO we are in a great position to win the Conference.

Regardless of what Ira said, I will maintain that he is better in coverage than Whitehead. Whitehead is great down near the line scrimmage and blowing someone up occasionally but he is average and coverage. He’s younger, has the potential to be better, I wish the Buccaneers still kept him, but this is better for the pass defense…
Especially if they have to play more zone due to a lack of pass rush which has yet to be addressed. Here’s to hoping JTS takes a big leap forward and Nelson picks up where he left off

The whole team is in win now mode. Brady might be a one and done, this time, if the Bucs grab another Lombardi.
A real rebuild will be coming pretty soon, in just a year or two. Because of that, we need to see Trask more this season, so non-believers can at least have some facts to spout.

I was really hoping for Honey Badger – but knew the $ would likely be an issue considering at the very least the Bucs still have to come up with about $20M to sign Gronk, Gholston and a solid vet RB. I imagine they would like to bring Suh back as well – but how many more tens of Millions can we push into the future for this 1 season without seriously hurting this franchise’s chances of competing in 2024-2025?
The Giants already owe Ryan Logan $5.5M – so I’m guessing we signed him for $3M or so…… details of his contract not available yet. Solid yet affordable vet pick up. Bowles is going to enjoy utilizing this guy’s versatility once Logan fully learns the Bucs defense….

Logan Ryan impressed me when he played for the Pats (his first 4 years), but it seemed like he dropped off the radar since then (3 yrs with the Titans & 2 yrs with the Giants). On relooking at his career stats though, he’s an incredible signing.
Logan’s played in 140 of the 145 regular season games that’ve been played in his 9 years (96.6%). That’s pretty much Ironman status IMO, especially considering that he was a CB for his first 7 years (wish our CBs had that kind of availability). Has 18 INTs in his career, with 13 of those being picks in his first 4 years with the Pats, plus another 4 of those in his last year with the Titans.
Looks to me like we got a dawg who’s durable as all git-out, and who can be a very good ball-hawk in the right defensive scheme. I’m sure that Todd will put his skills to great use.

You can never have enough “tacklers” in your secondary. This will be a HUGE plus for Tampa’s secondary unit.

The genius (and fortune) of signing Logan Ryan has not yet been fully appreciated by many covrring the NFL. TB12 former teammate and friend, 2 SB champ, and seasoned defensive captain will bring EVERYTHING the Bucs’ young secondary has been missing. Brady will now have “his guy,” also a product of the Patriot Way, who will immediately instill discipline and the much needed seamless communication and coordination on the field and with the sidelines. No more confusion or delay in getting set for each play as Logan will either cause the sideline to up their game or he will call the defensive play himself. Logan will quickly gain trust as player/coach and his impact on the field will be apparent soon after training camp begins. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Ryan has also personally reached out to his teammates as the GOAT did two years ago. Awesome. Just awesome.

Think it has much more to do with the very real likelihood Brady won’t play next year and the Bucs will be in full rebuild mode.

Logan Ryan still has plenty left in the tank but he is veteran insurance. Don’t expect him to start if the other two safeties are healthy.
