NFL Network Seems Convinced More Bucs Moves Are To Come

The Bucs won’t keep all their free agents. Alex Cappa is already gone. And right now they have no cap room ($3 million isn’t “cap room”).
That doesn’t mean the Bucs are done signing guys when they inked center Ryan Jensen to a three-year deal last night. In fact, Bucs beat reporter Sara Walsh said it is clear more moves are coming since Tom Brady decided to return.
“Two years ago Jason Licht convinced Tom Brady to leave the only organization he’s ever played for and come to Tampa and now he convinced him to leave retirement and do it again,” Walsh said this morning on NFL Network. “There is no way both of those moves didn’t happen without Licht promising Brady that he would put the pieces in place to make a championship run.”
Yes, yes, yes. The Bucs have no cap room. For now. Consider: Just a few days ago the slimy Saints were in salary cap hell. Now, they are slightly under the cap and on the cusp of adding Deshaun Watson’s salary to the roster! Salary cap, Joe’s rear end! It seems every year the slimy Saints have no cap room yet they always find ways to sign players.
If the slimy Saints can do this, so too can Licht. That’s all there is to it.
After all, Joe keeps hearing that the Bucs have a magician of a capologist on staff. So relax about the cap and let the magician pull rabbits out of hats.

I’d hope so, sort of surprised he haven’t heard about a bunch of restructures already. I’d have figured they’d have them already written up and ready to go waiting for the word on Brady, and once they got it, they’d be spent out that moment.

No way we were gonna pay Cappa 40 million, so I wish him well up in Cincinnati. He turned into quite the find by Jason Licht.

I love TB12 coming back. It will be fun PLUS it gives Licht a little extra time to reload key positions through the draft.

The Bucs are set for a long time (and can hunt for QB next year) if Licht and co draft starters in those positions.

The slimy saints sure are interesting. They’ve restructured 46mil of cap into both ’22 and ’23, and 36mil already into 2024. So that’s how they’ve done it, they just continue to delay paying the pied piper. But it’s going to affect the talent level they can put on the field in the next 3 years.
The Bucs by comparison only have 9mil in both ’22 and ’23, and 4.6mil in ’24 restructured bonus. So we are not nearly in as dire straights as the saints, and yeah if we need to do so for this year, the option is available.
I guess you can keep doing that as long as you must to get the most out of the final years of your HOFers, but eventually it will get you. I think it’s half the reason why Payton quit, staring at that inevitability down the barrel.

Besides Fornett and Davis, I don’t know what other FA they need to resign. Gronk will decide to play in Tampa if he plays at all. I think the others are expendable.

Playing around with the Sportac team management thingie, I was able to fix all the cap issues with like 6 clicks of my keyboard.
Just do a restructure on Evans, Shaq and Smith – then lock up Godwin, reducing his cap hit to just $5m this season, then cut Brate and our two kickers, and tah dah, we got $45m in cap space.

Rod I’m sure you know this but the player has to agree to restructure a contract. Now a days they back load contracts so much that if you cut a guy it’s a big cap hit. Which is good for the player you might think twice about cutting. Its bad for trades because a possible trade partner doesn’t want a bloated salary. It sucks for the player sometimes because the team wants a restructure to save money in the present. I think some of these GM’s over pay players and back load on purpose to keep the player happy at the time knowing full well in three years the team will either restructure or cut them.
