Bucs Restructure Vita Vea’s Contract

Joe will keep this simple. The Bucs just added about $7.7 million to their 2022 salary cap. Now they’ve got nearly $10 million available.
Today it was Vita Vea’s turn to rework his fat new deal, per NFL Network.. Look for multiple cap-saving moves over the next few days as the Bucs try to afford one of their big-name free agents — or a very expensive new quarterback.

After june 1st the bucs will get 10 mil for marpet and 12 mil for brady.. Rework evans contract to 4 years 60 mil save about 6 or 7 mil. Thats enough to sign Watson or a few free agents.

It won’t be for Watson. Everyone keeps forgetting this guy will get some kind of suspention. You might not see him play for anyone for quite sometime. Maybe the whole 2022 season.

I hope they manage to retain Jensen/Cappa. A team thats likely going to double its rushing attempts doesn’t need to lose most of its O-line

Of they can’t swing a deal for Watson, go get Trubisky. Touristy with the Bucs will become a good NFL qb. He took the Bears to playoffs twice with Nagy as head coach. That alone is impressive.

Our current cap situation already accounts for Brady and Marpet. The Marpet savings was only 5.7 mil because of dead money.

How did the team do this? Vita’s new deal doesn’t kick in until next year, and Vita was only counting for about $4.5m cap hit – so how did they get more than his entire salary in savings?
I’m sure it’s just that the cap sites got some wrong info, but even so, I’m not sure how they’d get a $7m savings. Anyone got the actual numbers?

Why even have a salary cap if GM’s can just defer income? This win now at all costs attitude is not good for the future.

The goal is to win the Super bowl whenever you can. I’d rather win it all once every 15 years than to be a borderline playoff team every year for a century.

Flexibility.
The Bucs, by default, structure contracts with guaranteed money in the first 2 years, and take their cap hit in the year it’s paid. This leaves them the option to take the pain up front, or spread it out. Since it’s of no consequence to the player whether it’s a guaranteed salary vs. guaranteed bonus, it’s easy and doesn’t cost anybody anything. I guess the other consideration is that this contract was signed with the season still going, so if Vea had suffered a catastrophic injury, they wouldn’t have to owe him money for additional years into the future.

Let Cappa walk. Draft the best OG/C we can at the end of the 1st round. Hopefully a super high value pick like Vea and Wirfs.
We may be able to draft the top 1-2 guards or centers coming into the draft.
Very rarely are guards or centers taken in the 1st round.
So we may get the chance the draft to draft the best or 2nd best guard/center prospect in this years draft.
Letting Cappa walk will also get us a compensation pick next year.
1st round pick? It’s gotta be a badass guard who can also backup Jensen for the next 3-4 seasons.

It’s all accounting games, but eventually it catches up. You may be able to spend more than your books show for a couple of years, but eventually all the dead money will eat up enough that you can’t sign your players. Think of it as a soft cap. From year to year you may spend less or more, but over the course of several years, it will tend to even out spending across the league, which is the intent.
But I tend to agree that all the accounting games allows for teams to commit budgetary malpractice. The idea of the cap is to eliminate excessive spending, creating competitive imbalances. I really respect a team that is able to build and maintain winning while practicing fiscal discipline within the cap — the way it ought to be. Buying players has never really appealed to me. I like teams that have a philosophy for building a team and stick to it.

If Brady really wants top play for the 49ers trade him for Trey and Kittle and maybe a draft pick or two.
If they get Brady, they’ll also get Gronk so they wouldn’t need Kittle?

They take contract money and give it as signing bonus which doesn’t have as big of salary cap effect
