“Clinging” To Hope

March 10th, 2022

Hope chest.

In the eyes of a former NFL general manager, the Bucs have little interest in Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson because he’s out of the Bucs’ reach.

Joe Banner, a co-founder of the 33ed Team (if the NFL expands will that outfit have to change its name?), released a list of teams he believes are in the hunt for Watson. Also, Banner has a list of teams that are out on Watson. And Banner puts the Bucs on the outside fogging up the window while looking at the insider teams trying to pry Watson out of Houston.

One reason the Bucs are out, Banner types, is that the Bucs are on their knees praying retired (?) quarterback Tom Brady has a change of heart and returns to the pirate ship.

Buccaneers: Tampa Bay is unlikely because of the cap situation and because of how many UFAs they will try to bring back. They’re also clinging onto hope Brady won’t retire.

Well, it warms Joe’s heart to read that the Bucs are going to try creative math to keep their free agents. And, Joe guesses, in the big picture, if you are going to hope for something to happen as opposed to being proactive, hoping the greatest quarterback of all time and last year’s leading passer returns is worth the gamble.

Joe personally subscribes to the Bobby Knight philosophy of hope.

“The worst word in the English language is ‘hope.'”

Joe, has Tom officially turned in his retirement paperwork?

  2. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s over give it up with the Brady talk !! Even if he does decide to come back a year from now we will still be talking about the same thing at this time next year!! We ain’t winning no superbowl next year with Brady or without Brady. This was the reason why I didn’t want Brady from the jump because of his age. I new this was going to happen .

  3. Rod Munch Says:

The salary cap doesn’t mean that much.

The Saints were over $100-million over the cap and are mostly bringing back their entire team, including all their high priced talent that they wanted to keep.

The Packers were $50-million over the cap, and they made Rodgers the highest paid QB in the NFL and found the money to put a franchise tag on Davante Adams, and they’re about to sign Jaire Alexander to an extension.

If there is someone worth spending the money on, you can find the money. If the Bucs get a legit, top flight QB, they’ll find the money to keep the guys who they want to keep.

I’ll keep asking: why hasn’t there been a conversation between Tom Brady and Jason Licht, clarifying everything? If this hasn’t happened, then why not? When you retire, do you not inform your team owner and coaches?

I believe Brady is done. He did it clumsily, but he’s done. He saw what was coming, didn’t want to be a part of it, and also didn’t seen a viable alternative with any other team. I believe retirement and new Hollywood opportunities are not only more pleasurable but lucrative, and it is also what the Horse Commandant wants.

If, on the other hand, he is playing LeBron games, then he has caused himself and the Bucs irreparable damage.

  5. Buc92’ Says:

Tom saw himself sucking , so he retired right before as he always said . Stay retired bud we’re good . Deshaun has it from here

    GoBucs!

  6. adam from ny Says:

from what i have heard, yes his retirement papers have been turned in to the nfl 🙁

  7. Pruritus Ani Says:

Hope is not a planning strategy.

  8. Leighroy Says:

Steele, do you really think that conversation hasn’t happened? All this speculation is by media types. All Licht and BA have said is that yes if he changes his mind we’ll keep the light on. That’s not saying golly gee were begging and planning for his return.

Another saying about hope: you can hope in one hand and sh!t in the other and see which one gets filled first.

  9. Bird Says:

    Oneil

Great points. Yah teams shouldnt go all-in to go after super bowls when they can. They should just strive to be nobodies for 20 years at a time.

It really sucks we have fans out there that think the last 2 years sucked
I mean we really have the worst fans

  10. TBfan Says:

Look if Tom had no intention of returning the front office would have gone crazy to sign a big name QB. Jason can pull off magic when needed…see 2020 for reference. None of us know what’s REALLY going on. Especially the media looking for clicks for relevance 🙄. Not that making a bowl of cereal for the kids may be very exciting..and shopping with the wife every other day may be intriguing as hell…that man still wants to play the game . No one anywhere can deny that…especially Tom.

  11. SB~LV Says:

    He’ll be back

  12. Winny Testaverde Says:

OneLilBucs continues to set record lows on the Wonderlic Test…trending towards negative/below zero territory. Thankfully The Bucs Brass “new” Brady would make them instant contenders.

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

Bradys done at least with the Bucs. And the old drunk didn’t help matters by saying hes not trading Bradys rights to any team what an a__h__e. That shows BA has no character thats how you repay a player for basically turning your franchise around. He should step aside and let BL be the head coach.

  14. SB~LV Says:

Brady is shopping for a Elway relationship with a franchise, Dolphins are his first choice.
    Bucs sloppy seconds

  15. Tony Says:

Roberto Aguayo to be our next starting QB.

  16. MadMax Says:

Isnt JW still out there for league minimum…just saying….i dont like him but im just saying hahaha.

    Brady gone, get over it.

  17. Deano Says:

Rod How can a team be a 100 million over cap still sign all their players… And how does the team pay $50 million for one player and pay the rest of the team.. and the Bucs can’t sign their own free agents something wrong with this picture

  18. SRQ Bucs Fan Says:

    Hope is not a strategy.

  19. RustyRhinos Says:

Wow, here I sat thinking my whole life that ” Hope ” was what built determination, which leads to belief in one’s own abilities thru sheer willpower of that effort you bring into every day. I guess I may have missed understanding something about having ” Hope “.

  20. Goldbourne Says:

@TomBrady signed a 2-year contract. In his 2yrs @QB TB-Bucs went from last to first in there division and won SBTT! In year 2 the Bucs won the division and almost reach the Superbowl! Who was responsible for their elimination; the Refs or the Coaching Staff: take your pick! The fans of the Bucs should say, “Thank God he came here, even if it’s only for 2 years!

  21. Emerson Says:

The speculation on Watson is rediculous, when Brady was leaving New England it was considered laughable that he’d come play for the Bucs yet he did. I don’t think Watson has had any real talks with any teams yet and probably doesn’t know who he will play for yet. Obviously he has a list of suitors but if he knows where he will sign if everything works out there doing good keeping it quite.

  22. TDS Says:

Anyone saying they never wanted Brady in TB is ignorant. All pats fans would have taken him back in any way possible at any time. Brady is still TB’s best option, if he comes back, gronk comes back, better chance of fournette coming back, and so on. Brady also already has loads of chemistry with the receiving corps and knows the playbook better than any qb not in TB right now. He (Brady) won’t come back though and I suspect most TB fans know why. It’s been reported a few times that Brady and Arians didn’t have the best relationship. I feel like BA took Brady’s last year (this coming year) away from him. Just my two cents.
