Jason Licht Says He Expects A Kicking Competition
March 1st, 2022Let the competition begin!
Ryan Succop ranked 23rd in field-goal conversion percentage last season, and he wasn’t drilling any 50-yarders. In fact, Succop didn’t make a 50-yarder, limiting the Bucs’ options in putting points on the board.
Joe suspected Succop would be on the hotseat this season with the Bucs having salary cap concerns and after Tampa Bay kept rookie kicker José Borregales on their practice squad all season.
Today at the NFL Scouting Combine, Joe asked Bucs general manager Jason Licht whether he expected a kicking competition this summer considering that he kept Borregales all through 2021 and he’s on the roster now.
Licht quickly said he expects competition and he referenced how accurate Borregales was in practice. Succop turns 36 in September.
Somehow, the Bucs managed to land college football’s top kicker last offseason (Borregales) — perhaps because they told him Succop likely only had one season left?
Regardless, Joe is all for competition. May the best kicker win.

Succops range seems so limited hoping borregales beats him out

More than welcome for that competition….
Nothing against Succop, but if Borregales wins the competitions, we can create more cap room, that is much needed.

I seem to remember the Bucs previously signing college football’s best kicker.

Good – 83% sucks.
Succop is overpaid…

Nothing against Succup but Borregales is the real deal! He’s only 24 and much cheaper. He hit from 57 in college so has a strong leg! Not going to be much of a competition. This is a no brainer!

Just hope we don’t use our second round pick on one again

Competition? I figured they’d make the cut before FA to free up cash – but maybe you just hold onto both kickers and make the cut at the end of the preseason since Licht always wants at least $5m in cap space for moves during the season, so making the cut then might be an easier way of creating than money than other means – while also giving you an out if the young kicker ends up being a turd.

What about competition for Pinion? He was not good this season.
