Marcus Peters & The Bucs
February 25th, 2022Joe has seen and heard a lot of chatter saying Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis could command more than $16 million per season on the open market next month.
Man, that’s a huge investment for an injury-prone guy who’s never been to a Pro Bowl. Davis is a very good corner, the Bucs’ best, and a solid talent, but $16 million?
If general manager Jason Licht is looking to go cheaper, then Marcus Peters is a very intriguing option. The 29-year-old star blew out his ACL in early September with the Ravens but reports have him set to be full-go before training camp starts in late July.
Peters is a beast at man coverage, critical in Todd Bowles’ scheme, and the two-time All-Pro has been one of the great ballhawks in the game with 31 interceptions through six seasons on the field.
His 2022 salary is $10 million, the final year of his contract, and Baltimore has salary cap issues. Could Peters be a cap casualty and get cut, or be available on the cheap via trade?
Per Spotrac.com, Peters’ salary is guaranteed for 2022 if he’s on the Ravens roster on March 22. The free agency frenzy opens up March 14 at noon.
Peters would be a quite a Bucs wild card signing coming off a major injury, but Joe could embrace signing Peters and drafting a rookie cornerback with a premium pick. That combination would bring welcome competition and an overall talent upgrade.

good move. Let CD walk and get a comp pick for it. Maybe we can trade up in the draft as well for prime players

No damaged goods.

Agreed. If we lose Davis we will need to draft a CB in round 1 or 2 plus bring in a free agent vet like Gilmore or Peters.

I think Dean/Bunting to execute what’s required in Bowles scheme IF….we have a solid pass rush. Without a pass rush, we are forced to blitz and even with one shut down CB, the QBs will still pick us apart. Bowles scheme got eat up by some pretty mediocre QBs….we couldn’t beat any of the Saints back ups and nearly lost to the Jets rookie. Maybe we tag/trade Davis….get something for him if possible, maybe another DE situation similar to when we got JPP. Team is rebuilding, looking for draft picks, maybe we snag someone that route. Davis to me is a very good #2 CB….as a number #1 in this scheme, he’s not worth $10 million per year.

I may be getting the details of this wrong, in which case someone should feel free to correct me, but why don’t we tag Davis with one of the lesser tags? I think the highest transition tag would net us a second rounder and guarantee him a decent salary but not anything near the franchise salary if he were to stay. We could tag him knowing that he would likely leave and then net a second rounder if I’m remembering correctly. And of course if you stays at the lesser salary, all the better. Not sure why we wouldn’t do that and still plan for the contingency as described above.

*if he stays

No way Davis is the 16Mbdollar man. SMB is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. The secondary will be a major challenge for Bowles and LIcht. Good luck. Lots of scenarios in play.

CD is good, but not $16 mil good.

If he signs with the Bucs, will he flinch every time Donovan Smith walks past him?

Keep trying to replace youth with folks who are going to be out the league in a few years makes zero sense. We…need…to…get…younger not older. We’re consistently one of the teams with the oldest roster damn near every year. Enough. Now for depth, it’s fine. But stop suggesting we get oldhead to replace younger players just because they’re “cheap”. Cheap doesn’t equate to better or good in most cases.

Those are definitely the more realistic types of moves this off-season
A ton of guys will leave, and Licht will try and get as many quality cheap veterans with some question marks as he can

Interesting; ‘Baltimore has salary cap issues’. Got curious & Spotrac says that they have $9.8 mil left with 54 players signed (no voidable contracts), ranking #20 in NFL. Bucs have $6.9 mil left with only 47 players signed (3 voidable contracts) ranking #21 in NFL. But somehow Baltimore’s the one with salary CAP issues?
That aside, I’d love to see us sign Marcus Peters. but I’m not sure JL can make it happen. Peters contract has an out for 2022, but with an associated Dead CAP of $5.5 mil (his salary CAP hit this year is actually $15.5 mil). Doubt that Ravens will eat the $5.5 mil, but they MAY want to move on from Peters IF their 2021 CBs are acceptable (Humphrey, Averett & Young look like they got the lion’s share of the CB snaps). Worth pursuing & asking the question in any event.

This is actually a pretty good idea if his knee checks out.

Paying good players like superstars (see Matt Ryan and the Falcons) is a sure way to cripple your team. Peter’s would be a great pickup.

😍😍😍 I wish, he’d put some hair on the chest of our other corners. Toughen their soft arses up. Him AWJ n JW gosh o mighty

Im a huge Marcus Peters fan, I’m an even bigger fan of reason. A 29 year old corner coming off an ACL injury and an uproven rookie is not a sure fire talent upgrade.

Joe how cool would it be if we could keep CD n bring in peters
