Derek Carr And Bruce Arians

February 23rd, 2022

“Derek, if you come to Tampa, we will have to hit up The Undertow. But only after we get wings at Hooters on John’s Pass.”

A look at the best passers of the past four years got Joe thinking.

When the Bucs lost (?) Tom Brady, they lost the best passer in football. Only four players have thrown for 4,000 yards in each of the past four seasons. Brady led those four quarterbacks.

The others? Well, there is drama queen choke artist Aaron Rodgers, Pat Mahomes and a guy Joe is still not convinced is off the trade block. Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr is fourth on that list. So that certainly puts him up there in elite status.

Now Joe knows Josh McDaniels, the new Raiders coach, said he wanted to keep Carr at McDaniels’ first press conference.

Joe has heard a lot of coaches say a lot of things when they are introduced. Anyone remember Chucky raving about how valuable “Mark Alstott” was?

The Bucs could do a whole lot worse than getting Carr. And it would not shock Joe that the guys from the Belicheats who have taken over in Las Vegas are itching to put their own stamp on the Raiders franchise. And that may mean dealing Carr to save cap room. Carr is in the final year of his contract.

Joe thinks with an arm like Carr has, he would fit in nicely with Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Save cap? Who would the Raiders go with in 22 that would save them cap?

  2. DoooshLaRue Says:

I see Carr as a good long term solution at QB for us.
Forget about Watson and Rogers. Wilson, sure, I’d love to have him, but let’s be real, that’s serious money and picks.
Hopefully we can swing a trade with TB and then rebuild our DL and add a piece or to on the OL.

  3. zzbuc Says:

The only chance we get Carr is that TB12 moves to Vegas….

    Chances? Less than a logarithm……

We need to think about third tier QB….Bridgewaters etc…..

    Or stay put with Trask…..

  4. Nutterbutter95 Says:

Always the question of “who will they replace him with?” Raiders would be just as stuck as us if they let Carr go, even if the deal included Trask. The Bucs just got unlucky with the supply and demand this year in the QB market. Sucks to say, but sometimes that decides things for you. Teams arent willingly going to give their QBs up simply due to how little amount of good QBs are out there.

  5. Joe Says:

    Nutterbutter95:

Carr is in the final year of his contract. Additionally, they have a new coach who very well may want to draft and develop. Never, ever underestimate egos of (some) folks in the NFL.

  6. Ivan Aviles Says:

zzbuc so you are settler? Settle for whatever gets you over the line. Sad man, hope that’s not the way you do you.

  7. Buczilla Says:

I wouldn’t be thrilled overpaying for Carr in both salary and most likely the picks that it would take to get him, but he’s better than Jimmy, Cousins, and Teddy for sure. Plus, thanks to the idiot cowboys overpaying Dak like a superstar, that’s probably where Carr’s contract demands start once his current contract is up. He’s better than Dak and would be justified in asking for that kind of contract.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I am slowly getting used to the fact that Blaine Gabbert will be our starting QB, and I am OK with it.
I think all this other speculating is just to keep the season tickets selling.

  9. Tye Says:

Carr is The best scenario I’ve heard since Brady retired…

    Far better than:
    Watson – toxic
    Winston – head case
Blaine – what has he done
Trask – give him another year to develop
    Bridgewater – injury prone

  10. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Derek Carr for Bradys Rights no picks wasted

  11. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Why it should happen: Josh left NE for a reason in 22 after all these years and opportunities, he was supposed to be a heir apparent in NE. Josh and Tom would love to work together again. Gronk would love Vegas. Vegas and their stadium investment like LA need a Super Bowl to secure their success in the region for next 20 years.

Josh cannot do a rebuild alone, after the Denver failure.

Why it can’t happen: Only reason Brady won’t go is his son in NY and he’s building a 30m mega mansion outside Miami.

If Brady goes to Vegas Giselle my seek divorce, as Brady went to Vegas with Ben Aflecks Nanny and let the nanny wear his 5 SB rings.

  12. zzbuc Says:

    @Ivan Aviles..

Not sure what you mean Mister…

Just take a look at what’s happening in the league, and if you read what BA said yesterday, seems that Gabbert is a very serious option,….

So to your question if I am a settler…My answer is I am a realist……

  13. mike Says:

Carr is our best bet but the only way we get him is if Brady comes back this summer and wants to play for Mcdaniel so we trade

  14. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Carr did a lot with very little last year. With Evans, (maybe) Godwin, Brate, Howard, and others here he’d kill it

He’s also got some mobility to his game as well

  15. sasquatch Says:

I’d be in favor, but I can’t see a good reason why the Raiders would want to deal him. Who’s the replacement? Dealing Brady to LV is the only way i see it… But, even that is a problem — we need to get this figured out sooner rather than later, and Brady is still retired until he says otherwise.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

I think McDaniels might see better “value” in his former QB Jimmy G. Throw in the draft picks, maybe a starter and rotational player, its possible. I really think Carr is equal to Stafford in ability/upside. Stafford showed he can win big if surrounded with enough talent. Bucs will have the ammo on offense…..defense will be a crap shoot.

  17. Ash Says:

Pretty unrealistic to think we have any shot at getting carr. I agree with nutterbutter in that it is just bad timing to get a decent QB and right now this year bucs will have to settle for a third tier QB. The draft is also very weak with the QB prospects that are available so I just don’t see any team giving up a QB worth dealing for.

  18. Amar Says:

I guess Jameis Winston doesn’t count.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

I never saw TB12 coming to Tampa Bay, nor Gronk, nor Fournette, nor AB. So, I’ll never say “NEVER”.
    BUT…
This is not 2020 or 2021. We do not have a bunch of returning players under contract, quite the opposite really.
While this is fun to speculate on, the smart move is to sign your FAs FIRST, then see where it goes from there.

I like Carr more than a lot of the other names being thrown around but not if it takes a king’s ransom to do so.

  20. allbuccedup Says:

Lets hope McDaniel misses Jimmy G. and 49ers releases him and trades us Carr for a second round pick and change.

  21. BUCman Says:

Carr is not leaving the Raiders. This is a waste of conversation. Let’s keep to realistic options please

  22. EEK Says:

    Yes please!
I believe in fantasy — TB12 gave us 2 fantastical years

It would be going big but I think we’ve see management go there

  23. Ben green Says:

Ben wouldn’t be surprised if the raiders trade for Watson. McDaniels has lusted over him for years. Carr is a fine QB, but Watson has a much bigger sealing.

  24. 1sparkybuc Says:

Bite the bullet. Trask could be our best option. Save the compensation and premium contract for a QB some other team is willing to trade away. We have a QB under contract who knows the system, the coaches, and the players. Build the team on Trask and the core of talent that’s already here. Do it right, and maybe, just maybe, Brady has a change of heart. We gutted our draft to get Gruden, won the Lombardi , and stunk it up for eighteen years. Build on what’s here. Don’t mortgage the future on a reject that has to learn everything Trask already knows. Let’s find out what he can do. And yes, I’d rather take a chance on Trask over Gabbert. We already know he’s a dud. I trust the guy who has spent the last eight years as the backup to Winston and Brady over Gabbert.

  25. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I’d say there is a much greater chance that we end up with Jamis.

  26. RumDude Says:

I don’t see Rodger, Wilson or Watson as our starting QB this year.
I think we need to sign a serviceable QB while still giving Trask play time to evaluate what we have. QBs like Andy Dalton, Fitzmagic, Bridgewater, Mitch Trubisky or Josh Johnson are available, inexpensive and could help us win the division while we decide if Trask is our long term QB or we draft one in the QB rich draft in 2023.

  27. mark2001 Says:

Don’t know who Jamis is…. but guarantee if Jameis was to come back, Arians would retire and Licht would move on. Why would they stay for SShow part 2?

  28. HC Grover Says:

OK so hire Carr an give it a go. ABG anybody but Gabbert. But I think Bucco has Gabbert on his mind.

  29. Ben green Says:

Another possibility is Ryan tannehill. The Titans have soured on him and rightfully so. He’d be a better option than what they have currently. Probably wouldn’t cost a lot to aquire.

  30. DEEEMO Says:

I would love to have Carr behind center as long as it doesn’t involve selling the future. But with that said BA is not getting any younger and wants to win now. Remember back when the the Bucs won the 1st Super Bowl? They traded the future to the Raiders to get Chucky. I could see them making a blockbuster trade here with Draft Picks, redoing Carr’s contract, and resigning some of the key free agents with creative salary cap moves for a one or two year run again.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

14 INTs and 13 fumbles vs just 23 TDs in 2021.

So he turns the ball over while also managing not to score points.

    No thanks.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

    Winston > Carr

  33. BrianBucs Says:

The Bucs could do a lot worse than Carr.
However, if the Bucs really do believe that Trask is the future here the Bucs are not going to sign anybody long term or spend a lot of picks

  34. CChead Says:

Bucs trade a 3rd for Jimmy G. Trade Jimmy G and a second for Carr.

  35. xdptoddx Says:

This doesn’t make any sense for 2 reasons. First, why would McDaniels, who rejected the Colts mid-flight because he was uncertain about their QB, suddenly agree to take another HC position where the QB1 is someone he wants to get rid of? Second, if they do get rid of Carr, who are they going to get? Who would you give up Carr for, Watson, Brady?? He’s not going anywhere, let’s move on.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Focusing on excerpts in this excellent piece …

o ‘The Bucs could do a whole lot worse than getting Carr.’
o ‘Only 4 players have 4,000+ passing yards in each of the last 4 seasons’: Derek Carr is one of them.
o ‘Joe thinks with an arm like Carr has, he would fit in nicely with Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.’
o ‘Carr is in the final year of his contract.’

Aaah yes, now we’re getting somewhere Joe, although that first one is not exactly a ringing endorsement. BUT … NOT in 2022. Prying Carr away from Vegas would surely be expensive AND only buy us 1 year reprieve. Then we’d be in the same hole next year.

Would much prefer to see us focus on TEAM-BUILDING this year & cleaning up our salary CAP situation as best we can. There are several UFAs I’d like to see us re-sign (Godwin, Fournette, Jensen, Cappa or Stinnie (price counts), Whitehead, Gholston plus a few depth players. And yes, wouldn’t have any issue with re-signing Suh & JPP as part-time players … for the right price & assuming they’re fully healthy.

Admittedly Derek Carr wouldn’t qualify as THE GOAT JR, but he could be a reasonable replacement. On the negative side, he did last until Rnd 2 of the 2014 draft (Bucs snared ASJ 2 picks after Oakland grabbed Carr), and admittedly he was beat out that year by Bortles, Manziel & Bridgewater (all Rnd 1 picks), but hey, Derek’s done OK compared to those others (and for a 2nd Rnd pick too; oh the horror). Plus he’ll only be 31 next month so he’s surely got a few good years left in him.

Yup, start the winner of the Trask-Gabbert-Other Guy competition this year, see what we’ve got in Trask, and if he’s not the answer, kidnap Carr next year. Go for it JL; you can do this.

  37. David Says:

Why? Unless they think they are getting Aaron Rodgers or Watson or something, why would they possibly trade him? There’s very little they could do that would be better

  38. Calbucsfan Says:

Wanted Bucs to draft him, so I’m fine with him leading Bucs to their next SB victory! Go get him GM Licht!
