Jim Gray Isn’t Sure Tom Brady Will Stay Retired

Tom Brady’s longtime friend and radio co-host isn’t sure The Goat will stay off the farm.
Joe’s referring to veteran broadcaster Jim Gray, who co-hosts Brady’s Let’s Go! show on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio. Gray sucks up to Brady seemingly at every turn, worked with him on writing a book, and Joe would be surprised if Gray has ever said anything Brady doesn’t approve of him saying.
So it raised Joe’s antennae when Gray appeared on The Dan Patrick Show last week and said he isn’t sure Brady will stay retired.
Gray was asked if he believes Brady’s retirement is real.
“I do. I do. But I also believe that he doesn’t know if and when that urge will come back, Gray replied. “So I think he answered the question to the best of his ability and really honestly when he said, ‘Never say never.’
Gray went on speculate that Brady was retirement decision might have been more of a reaction to the moment and mostly about feelings. “… It’s more of an emotional thing, perhaps, that he’ll be 45 and doesn’t want to get pounced on by Von Miller and Aaron Donald and these guys.”
As Joe has written and said many times, nearly everything Brady says and does is calculated. And that includes refusing to slam the door on a potential return.
Hopefully the Bucs cling to his valuable rights and don’t cave just to make Tommy happy. Joe has faith that Team Glazer is sufficiently ruthless and will do everything possible to have Brady play in Tampa, if he is willing.

Best for everyone Trade get Deshaun Watson, Trade Tom and his cap to whomever to offset 3-4 picks required to trade for Watson with Houston.
Tom wants to move on and win elsewhere and Tampa got a SB and now a replacement QB on discount.
They didn’t need to trade for Tom, and got him on the cheap for 2 seasons at 25m/y. So it a huge value play if they can trade Tom, and get Watson.
Yes Watsons had major issues, but other than Cousins he’s the only really good QB Tampa get beyond the drafting early in 2023-24.

If anything is true it really seams as though the current situation has resulted in TB12 not feeling the urge to play. That blame goes on ownership, the FO, and coaching….

“When asked if Tom Brady was going to stay retired, Brown responded, “Why would he do that?”
That prompted a second question asking if he thinks Brady is going to make a comeback to the NFL. “I think so,” Brown said while signing autographs.
The reporter asked a third question, wondering where Brady would go if he did come back Tampa or 49ers. “Whoever want to win,” Brown responded.”
Followed by that AB smile.

AB probably equates winning with throwing him the ball.
And while I wouldn’t want to see him in Tampa Bay colors again, he’s not entirely wrong about that.

If you want Tom in Tampa, I would trade for rights to Sean Peyton and pay him 20m/y to coach and have him run the offence. I would then offer Brady whatever weapons he wanted and mortgage the cap into 5 year out and get all the past weapons resign Chris Gronk Fournette, add a star true pass catching hybrid back too, and another pass catching TE. It would make the team cap offence heavy and would be like the Saints, but the team will win a SB by offence and keep Tom for two more years.
I would require a 2 year commitment by Tom to play or one more SB.
Sean is probably the best coach behind Shanahan, Mcvay, Bill and Reed. And Sean is available but Saints own rights so they will want a 1st.
Or trade two first and a 2 seconds get Watson, and trade Tom to Colts/Tennesee/49ers etc for 1 first and run with Watson for 5 years, and manage the 5 game suspension with Trask.

I really don’t want Brady back. It was a fun ride that never felt real to me, but thanks for the SB.
Honestly, I wasn’t that impressed with his play in quite a few of his games last year.
Statically yes, he was very good, but I saw a drop off in his accuracy and attitude.
I’d rather reap the bounty that having his rights will bring to build a newer and younger team.

The injuries sustained in 2021 was the biggest factor, especially at RT. The narrative that there was some rift between Brady and Arians isn’t buttressed by any players or assistants we’ve talked to for two seasons, including those closest to Brady.

As has been said – if any of the rumor crap has any substance, get some loot for Tom’e contract, rights, and drama. Big loot. You still have him under contract and own his rights. He leaves he becomes a competitor again.
Licht will do everything he can to competitively advantage the Bucs in such a scenario. C’mon Tom unretire! Stay!
But if you go, know it won’t be unless Bucs are getting a QB, another great player and a premium draft pick.

Hard for me to believe that Brady looks at Evans and Godwin and Gronk and somehow concludes he would have a better chance at a super bowl elsewhere.
Evans and Gronk are future Hall of Famers.

I am both flummoxed and amused at Patriots fans who continue to post here. Particularly when Brady is supposedly gone. Thus removing their need to be fake fans of this team. Be careful what you ask for. Everyone wants The serial molester Deshaun Watson. We don’t even know how long he will be suspended. If could be an entire season. Then you get all of his baggage. Not to mention we would have to mortgage the future for probably at least three years out. I don’t think the Glazers are that stupid, but you never know.

First off, Jim Gray is a giant toolbox. Here’s how that farce of an interview works. Brady submits the questions. It’s what he wants asked. Gray has about as much insight into Brady mind as Bruce arians. He retired from the bucs, not pro football. Bucs management must understand by now what’s going on here. Everyone but Arians that is. What’d he say, first he’d be shocked if he retired, now he’ll be shocked if he comes back. If Brady wants to play, he’ll get to pick his team. Compensation from a team he won’t play for is fantasy. Make the deal with SF, and move on. Ben can’t imagine Brady would play for any team not poised to win. The dolphins thing is nonsense, they are alot more than a QB away.

Joe, I’m not looking to start a riot or become the next social piriah, but as a possible quality return/cost effective move at QB (with the wishful thinking of a Tom return) why is no one suggesting picking up the phone and calling Kapernik? If he can still play he would be a tremendous upgrade from Gabbert, could be had on the cheap, and could be effective in a BA offense. Kaepernick hasn’t played in 5 years and turns 35 soon. There’s also no indication he wants to play (he could generate that buzz in a matter of minutes). Arians has said previously that he doesn’t like or want a quarterback competition on any of his teams. Keep that in mind. –Joe

Kappernick has had many opportunities to join an NFL roster. He didn’t want to be a backup, or compete for a job. He effectively torpedoed his own career. Besides, he was terrible the last time he played, and obviously isn’t as explosive anymore. That was half his game.

I agree with all points made, but in this day and age phone calls are free so the only cost to explore would be a room for a night or two and the time to watch. Playing devil’s advocate, I don’t love any of the other options. Plus it might make salary cap issues easier to deal with.

They recievers played like Alpo those last few games. If you don’t have guys that can separate early, Brady always struggles. Godwin and Brown made things easy for him, hence the numbers. Brown’s tantrum, and Godwin’s injury sealed it.

He did not engineer that Rams comeback. If anything the Rams gave away the game to the tune that the Bucs should have won by 10 but the offense squandered a few chances away.

Brady didn’t want to retire, but his wife made him quit.
That’s why you hear Tom saying he doesn’t know how he’s going to feel, because he knows he wants to keep playing. But short of a divorce, he’s done. If the Glazers are truly ruthless, they’ll send down to Miami a 22-year supermodel homewrecker and Brady will need the Bucs salary to pay his alimony.
