Slumming With Carson Wentz (Part II)
February 19th, 2022You probably have heard this, but the Bucs need a quarterback. And high-profile Mike Evans is publicly pining for the Bucs to name a starter so he knows who to work with.
Now Joe is fixated on Houston’s Deshaun Watson. One of the Joes has a thing for Jimmy GQ (take a guess what current NFL quarterback has the most rings?). And there is the very slim chance the Bucs might have drama queen Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson on the roster for 2022. And maybe, just maybe, new coaches in Las Vegas and Minnesota are just talking nice about wanting to keep Derek Carr and Kirk Cousins, respectively.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report is trying to make the case a good bargain buy would be Colts quarterback Carson Wentz.
Despite Wentz’s awful finish to the 2021 season, he had a decent year, throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns (10th-most leaguewide) and seven interceptions with a 62.4 percent completion rate. He tied for ninth in QBR (54.7).
Taking a closer look at the Colts offense, Wentz posted solid passing numbers with just one reliable pass-catcher in Michael Pittman Jr., who registered 88 receptions for 1,082 yards and six touchdowns. Aside from the second-year wideout, no other player on the roster topped 40 receptions or 384 receiving yards.
Joe agrees with Moton that Wentz will not cost an arm and a leg to obtain in a trade like it would for Watson, for example, or Carr or Cousins. And Wentz could be cut.
What spooks Joe about Wentz is his former offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, Frank Reich, stuck his neck out to get Wentz to Indianapolis. And after just one year he wants to wash his hands of Wentz? That’s a very bad sign.
(Of course, it could be Colts owner Jim Irsay who could be driving the train. He put out scathing social media posts about Wentz after the season. So if Reich wants to stay employed, of course he would do what the guy who signs his paychecks tells him.)
And as Joe wrote about Cousins, who knows how much Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bruce Arians could raise Wentz’s game?
Wentz wouldn’t be near the top of Joe’s list of quarterback targets.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:05 am
Arians really loved Wentz, but to me he is not the answer.
He could not win in Indy, with a great defense and the leagues best running game.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:06 am
Holy god for christ sake. Wentz blew it HARD in the best possible situation for him.
Also he doesn’t like hard coaching and got benched for Jalen Hurts.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:14 am
I would still rather go with trask.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:15 am
If Bucco likes then hire him for the last tour of 2022. Why not? It will not make much diff, Let the struggle for .500 begin. Low expectations abound.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:18 am
This is more like a Wentz rerun than Wentz Part 2…..
And, yes….I’d rather go with Trask, Gabbert, Winston, Mariota, Dalton, Flaco, Bridgewater, Fitz or any number of other options….
Don’t give up money & draft picks for a mediocre QB.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:18 am
The Bucs best QB option is to either hope Brady changes his mind or trade his rights for Jimmy G.
The other options suck, period.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:27 am
Do not trade any draft picks unless it’s for more picks.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:32 am
Not a fan of Wentz but certainly a much greater option than Deshaun “the quitter” Watson!
February 19th, 2022 at 10:44 am
Get wentz, hope Brady comes back and an part ways with wentz. Can’t do that with bigger name.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:45 am
I’d stick with Gabbert or trask whether than Wentz. He is very up and down player. All he had to do was beat the lowly Jags and they are in the playoffs. What a letdown. Nope..Pass
February 19th, 2022 at 10:52 am
Jimmy GQ’s rings were as a backup holding Brady’s spare jockstrap – this argument is erroneous. Or should we start comparing Blaine Gabbert to Patrick Mahommes by the same logic? Outrageous.
February 19th, 2022 at 10:57 am
No No No !!!!
February 19th, 2022 at 11:00 am
If we sign Carson Wentz as our QB it will feel similar to the year I got fake Air Jordans for Christmas…
February 19th, 2022 at 11:02 am
Wentz would be a rerun of a few years ago. It would look like a good season until they got there and somehow ended 7-10.
Gabbert might be a better option to compete with Trask.
Too many other obstacles in the way, like fielding a good team around Gabbert or Trask.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:04 am
Keep the Money and keep the players you know can contribute that are unsigned. A quality 3 rd receiver without issues would also benefit the offense
more than a QB than already had two chances with very good offensive minds.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:09 am
Wentz is a worse Gabbert who doesn’t know the offense. Wentz is a disaster, yet Joe seems to love pimping him. Gabbert has been Arain’s back up for the last 3 years. You don’t keep a guy around that long as you’re back up if you didn’t believe in him. If the Bucs had all kinds of cap space, and if there were some trades, or real good FA’s out there, maybe we don’t go with Gabbert. Our hands are tied, Gabbert is the best solution.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:10 am
I’m curious Joe… Are you still completely enamored by Bruce? He/you seem completely terrified to name the player he hand picked in the 2nd round last year. If BA is worth his weight as a whisperer, then why so scared to actually show your hand with Trask. Seems like we just saw a 2nd yr qb in the superbowl.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:14 am
Oh brother…as Livia Soprano would say, “Just take me”!
February 19th, 2022 at 11:19 am
We don’t appear to have the money to go after the top
Tier Available QBs. If we go with Trask why would any free agents take a chance on us when it looks like we are rebuilding. Remember Trask has yet to play. Seems like we are really boxed in to the middle. Go after a pro established
Vet, hope we can coach him up and sign as many of our free agents and others to try and win a weak division. Once in playoffs ya never know.
We were 7 point favorites over the Giants when they won their first ELI super bowl.
I trust our GM will make the right choice.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:26 am
Seeing A TON of chatter in the last 48 hours about Brady playing for San Fran this upcoming season.
Assuming it’s all just smoke, but ugh, it’s annoying.
February 19th, 2022 at 11:34 am
F*CK NO
February 19th, 2022 at 11:37 am
Is there a way to find out our odds of getting the number one pick in 2023 if we sign Wentz and he starts all 17?
February 19th, 2022 at 11:46 am
The issue with Wentz is similar to AB…..its not a lack of talent, its personality. He wears his stay out relatively quick with his arrogance. There were rumors in Philly he was a problem in the locker room taking on the persona of a SB winning QB even though Foles delivered a championship. His relationship sours in Philly, he heads to Indy and its the same thing. The dude thinks he’s something he’s not. Talent wise he would be a good fit but in this locker room with soooo many team first players that have actually won a championship, he’s going to come off as a blow hard.
February 19th, 2022 at 12:09 pm
What did you Bucs fans do to deserve potentially settling for Wentz? He I one of the biggest choke artists. I am actually starting to feel sorry for you all. Shatty coaches and shatty QB. Ouch!
February 19th, 2022 at 12:16 pm
“One of the Joes has a thing for Jimmy GQ (take a guess what current NFL quarterback has the most rings?)“
I’ll take that as a joke considering he never won a single ring as a starting QB. But I wouldn’t be surprise considering the cherry picking and lack of context that Joe likes to operate with lol
I’d take Wentz over Jimmy Garbage btw, but I don’t think I’d want either.
February 19th, 2022 at 12:19 pm
Question: If you’re pimping for a sleaze-bag (Watson) does that also make you a sleaze-bag???
February 19th, 2022 at 12:27 pm
Joe Arians is not going to raise Wentzs game the only thing BA is going to do is raise his bourbon glass. But if hes released hes better than anything on the free agent market, give a shot.
February 19th, 2022 at 12:27 pm
Maybe not a sleaze bag too, just a fearful BA acolyte who really has no faith in the almighty bruce.
February 19th, 2022 at 12:28 pm
Wentz?
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Sign a QB who will have been shown the door from two organizations. He was run out of Philly and the Colts can’t wait to dump him after doing nothing against the worst team in the league (Jacksonville lost 50-10 the week before) with a playoff spot on the line.
These kind of guys routinely lead teams to Super Bowls on Fantasy Island, but no place else.
I’d rather go with Trask and use the extra QB cash to sign some quality free agents. If Trask fails, the pieces will be in place to draft a QB next year with the subsequent high first round pick as a result of his failure.
February 19th, 2022 at 12:32 pm
My dad lives in Indy and I had to hear/see everything about Wentz this past season. Please….stop. Just no. Glennon had nice “stats” too.
February 19th, 2022 at 1:00 pm
The available QBs at this point are Wentz, Watson, Winston, Bridgewater, Gabbert, Mayfield, and maybe Jimmy G, Tannehill and Cousins.
Rodgers and Wilson will not play for Tampa and more then likely won’t move teams.
Of the available good QBs only Cousins and Watson are truly good QBs, both expensive and both have question marks and issues.
If Tampa thinks they can’t compete then gutting the team, outside of the Oline and Evans/Godwin, and rookies, may be an option and tank for a draft picks next year and gamble at 1 in 3 hit rate you get a franchise QB.
Or just trade a few first and get a franchise QB and pay him.
Going middle ground with Wentz Jimmy Winston etc. will be wild card or no playoffs but not an embarrassment.
Going bad rookie or bad QB will mean 5-12 and a 3-5th pick next year to get the second or third best option at QB.
The team screwing up the Brady relationships really screwed this team over as he was the cheapest and best option at QB.
February 19th, 2022 at 1:08 pm
Oh Jesus, Wentz and ole ammonia brain? It would be a disaster on an epic scale. Wentz isn’t a good QB, he’s not even serviceable. Why would you want him for any other reason but to tank. I suppose he’d be a decent backup, if you could ensure he never sees the field.
February 19th, 2022 at 1:43 pm
Any Bucs post Brady QB option is lousy. Some are more lousy than others. Wentz falls into the terribly lousy category. His own boy Reich said “see ya.”
Say no more.
February 19th, 2022 at 1:50 pm
@ChiBuc, LOL. A SB and a 13 win season doesn’t do it for you? My choice would be 1. Carr 2. Cousins, 3. Gabbert/Trask. Let the Vikings give up their future for Watson and we can get Cousins on the cheap. I think Cousins or Carr would thrive in Tampa.
February 19th, 2022 at 2:11 pm
BA was one of the reasons Brady came to the Bucs and won a Super Bowl.
These anti-BA cretins get indignant when sarcasm is aimed at certain highly wealthy and overly influential individuals, but see no hypocrisy in referring to the winningest HC in Bucs history (percentage basis) as ammonia brain, egomaniac, senile, ad nauseum. Surely these are perceptions based on many personal interactions with BA. Right?
If not, it’s no more valid than saying the earth is flat because you read it on the internet.
February 19th, 2022 at 3:12 pm
Winston is better, and doesn’t cost any picks, and would be cheaper.
February 19th, 2022 at 3:16 pm
The earth is flat swampslut, as evidenced by several ships logs Ben has found during his travels to “the edge” said ships encountered leviathans, mermaids, and the elusive sea bigfoot. Sea bigfoot has flippers for hands and feet, and a natural snorkel for a face. He’s a mammal after all.
Keep believing in ole ammonia brain. The assumption that he’s a good coach is no more fantastical than Ben’s flat earth theory.
February 19th, 2022 at 3:39 pm
I doubt Brady will be back. The almighty bush has spoken, and she ain’t lettin him come back.
February 19th, 2022 at 3:53 pm
The problem with trading for Wentz is that he isn’t any good so why wouldnt you just sign Gabbert who at least knows the system.
February 19th, 2022 at 4:31 pm
Ash……as violently as it nauseates me…..that’s certainly part of the solution. He and a FA like Buttwater will compete for the job. Oh and I guess the Gator quarterback.
Yuchk.
But given cap cost, draft capital cost, and legal/civil obstacles of all the other options, this is the least grotesque. Mind you,mit still smells like a guys dorm after an all night sausage pizza kegger.
February 19th, 2022 at 5:06 pm
Swampanizer, the way you depict women I grotesque. So it looks like in your previous post we got to the root of your problem. You hate powerful wealthy women. In other words you have quite the inferior complex. Don’t worry little man there are a number of good psychologist who can help you with your mommy issues.
February 19th, 2022 at 5:12 pm
Swampslut, although Arians posses the strength of the insane, Ben would win on points. Ben is more interested in pounding a trolling bitch like yourself, instead of a demented old drunk. If you saw Ben in person, you’d run like a Lil girl.
February 19th, 2022 at 5:18 pm
I say sign Winston. He comes cheap, he knows the offense, and he knows the receivers. Then let pre season determine who is best for the job, Gabbert, Winston, or Trask. Let the best man win!!
If Winston throws less than 20 interceptions, this team wins the division, makes the playoffs, and then who knows!! If Gabbert or Trask win and don’t become turnover machines…we’re in the playoffs!
February 19th, 2022 at 5:20 pm
To clarify… I don’t know if Winston can throw less than 20 interceptions!!!!!!!
February 19th, 2022 at 5:28 pm
Infomeplease is onto something.
February 19th, 2022 at 5:33 pm
Swampy has obvious momma issues. He probably wasn’t able to latch on. This is where his jack the ripper mentality towards women comes from. Institutionalization is the only answer for a cretin like he.
February 19th, 2022 at 5:45 pm
As discussed in the previous Wentz thread, sure he’s a cheaper overpriced option on the long list of mediocre overpriced options. Stylistically he’d fit in a workmanlike way. Better him than criminal DeShaun. That’s about it.
February 19th, 2022 at 6:11 pm
Hey Bqueer — good for you! Now you want to pick fights! Internet tough guys like you spend most of their day sucking on a phallic-shaped pacifier while staring out the window hoping for something cool to happen. Get your Bill Belichoad poster and rub a few out to mute that aggression.
February 19th, 2022 at 7:43 pm
Wentz was simply running the plays. He has no feel for the game and really doesn’t care. He’s awful in my opinion. I’d pass on him.
February 19th, 2022 at 7:49 pm
Swampie Don’t be mad, and unintelligible that Ben hit so close to home. Ben has already told you, I’ll help you get of the junk, and or booze. Your love of BA screams failed adult alcoholic. Ben has struggled with the same thing, aside from loving BA.
If it’s a fight you’re looking for, you’d tremble in your skid marked undies at the sight of Ben. It’d be tremendous to have a commentary, and uploaded to Joe’s site
February 19th, 2022 at 10:16 pm
Hey Joe, how about a little censorship or banishment of swampbuc. I really enjoy the back and forth discussions with other Buc fans on Joebucsfan.com but have gotten sick of swampbucs attacks on others along with the vulgar statements he makes and I am sure I’m not alone in feeling that way. Disagreements are part of the back and forth but his nasty, rude, and ugly demeanor is ruining it for everyone else. There always has to be one! If he stays I go!
