Agent Of Deshaun Watson Claims There Has Been No Discussion Of Playing For Bucs

February 17th, 2022

Houston QB Deshaun Watson.

There is always a dangerous element of dealing with player agents, whether on-the-record or off-the-record. That’s because they have no interest in revealing the truth.

Player agents are employed by the player. They have but one interest: getting the most money for their client. So whatever they say is calculated if not rehearsed. They generally will not offer up any intel unless it enhances the chances of their client making money directly or indirectly, immediately or down the road.

That’s why Joe usually steers clear of agents, and when Joe does deal with them, it is very often with a skeptical eye.

In short, a reporter is more likely to get used or played by an agent than informed.

So Joe is typing the following with a raised eyebrow.

Earlier this week, veteran NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler reported that embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson added the Bucs and the Vikings to his list of potential destinations whenever he is sprung loose by the Texans, who Watson vowed to never play for again.

This came shortly after he signed a massive contract with the team. And yes, the gifted and talented Watson fully followed through with Operation Shutdown all of last season.

On the heels of Fowler’s report, Watson’s agent tells another veteran of the NFL reporting world, Josina Anderson, that he and his client have not discussed the Bucs at all.

Joe finds this difficult to believe. Are we to swallow the notion that Watson and his client have not once entertained the thought of Watson playing for the Bucs since Tom Brady retired. Really?

Oh, Joe supposes this could be true but only a naive person would believe that.

Joe is not saying Anderson’s reporting is wrong; please do not misunderstand. Joe has a hunch this a CYA effort by Watson’s agent to make sure he’s not running afoul of NFL tampering rules, and to keep the door open to other potential suitors that may pop up in the coming days.

Remember, the combine is a week from Monday. There, NFL suits and agents will do a whole lot of tire-kicking to set the table for the free agency dinner bell which follows only a few days later.

We don’t need another thug. JW comes to mind.

  2. Bird Says:

Of course him and agent have talked about certain teams
And of course he wants to go to a team that is playoff caliber to resurrect career

He doesnt want to get busted for illegal tampering w free agency not beginning for a few weeks

  3. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Newest story is Miami owner Ross may have step away and sell to Dolphins vice chairman and partner Bruce Beal who is also president and partner of Ross’ real estate conglomerate, Related Companies. He already had a right to first offer deal in which he would like Tom Brady to come into as minority owner. Tom is building a 30m dollar mansion in Miami. Maybe he’s the first player owner for Miami?

  4. Tye Says:

BEST news I’ve heard all week…
    Hope it stays that way!

  5. cmurda Says:

Exactly Bird. Also, strictly from a negotiating standpoint, it would be better for Watson and agent to not make it appear they are leaning toward a certain team. There’s nothing to do this.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

I get why Watson’s situation is “news” considering the Bucs just “lost” the best QB to ever take an NFL field…..

I find it almost impossible to believe though that Licht will be willing to pony up two or three 1st rd draft picks – AND then have to find $40M every year to pay a QB…

A number of the “options” being thrown around as possible replacements for Brady will be Free Agents in 2023. Carr, Cousins, Garoppolo, Murray, Mayfield, Stafford – none of these QBs are under contract for 2023

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Good.

  8. Joe Says:

Maybe he’s the first player owner for Miami

Pretty sure that’s not kosher per NFLPA agreement with NFL. That doesn’t mean there may not be a wink-wink agreement with Brady after he retires he can guy a piece of the team.

Trubisky on a one year prove it deal.

  11. HC Grover Says:

    Just say no.

  12. HC Grover Says:

WOW The Brady Fish,,,will he bring back Flipper? Faster than lighting?

  13. Buc92’ Says:

Everybody relax it’s just so they won’t get hit with tampering. He’s your Qb & Darcie glazer signed off on it because if not , Licht & Arians wouldn’t be permitted to speak to that camp. Go Deshaun !

    GoBucs!

Trubisky on a one year prove it deal.

    ….

That just means to start Trask. He would beat Trubisky out before pre-season

  15. SB Says:

Darci would never let Watson come here.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Brady and Flipper would pack Miami Stadium to the rafters. Bucs have the Cannons and Dolphins Flipper. I would like that.

This is more true than most would believe.
    WAY worse than crack.

Thanks do not need the the headache!

  19. HC Grover Says:

    No No No to Watson.

  20. Bobby M. Says:

Whatever names you’re hearing publicly aren’t remotely in the running. Its all a public chess game to drive up trade offers….most likely targeting the Panthers in this scenario.

  21. chickster Says:

    Watson or bust bitches

  22. sasquatch Says:

This is deep into yawn territory. Wake me up when there’s an actual move for a QB. Until then, I’m not worrying about it.

  23. Tony Says:

We’re gonna send Gabbert & picks to KC for Mahomes.🤣

  24. chickster Says:

we cant go back to 7/9

  25. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Joe, this would make a good article or poll. Assuming Brady is retired and the buccaneers need to trade for and or sign for an available experienced QB whom do the fans on this site really like?

Presuming most experienced FA will require 25-35m/cap hits and new contracts with some QBs needing even higher 40m cap hits and many 1st for a Watson, Wilson and AR?

Lower priced FA no trade required

Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, Wentz, Gabbert, Taylor, Newton, Mariota

    2nd rounder or late first

    Jimmy 20-30m/y
    Tannehill

1 first rounder minimum maybe more for trade and costs at 20-35m/y cap hit

    Carr, Cousins, Mayfield,

    Multiple first rounders 35-40m/y

    Watson Wilson AR

This is assuming the players and teams would agree to the trades, likely because they have a replacement QB they themselves are signing or trading for or most of the teams would never trade their QBs.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

Tony I like your style. But be careful, there are puritanicals here that take football blogging very seriously and may not have any fun reading your posts.

Personally, I love the idea of shipping the Goob off for a can of sardines and a coat hanger. Mahomies would be a huge bonus.

  27. Bqen green Says:

If y’all got Watson, you’d change tude pretty fast, speed of light fast. Joe couldn’t get an article up, in support of the New bucs QB fast enough. Yall have experienced the biggest migraine in football, a guy named Antonio Brown. If Arians serves any purpose, it should be the ability to coach the Watson situation. After all, BA is fast and furious friends with reputed pervert big ben. BA should’ve learned something out on the links with his great friend.

  28. Tony Says:

Yep. I think we could probably bring Josh Freeman back & he would do better then Blaine Gabbert right now.

  29. New England Patriots Fan Says:

If Tampa got AR or Watson and had to mortgaged even 3 seasons of picks, and 45m/y cap space. Within minutes everyone would be excited and pumped for the season.

But I understand the Watson problem, BA will have to do the AB solution hire only fans and adult stars for away games, so he keeps his hands off the physio/massage therapy staff

When running the cost and numbers for a quality QB in hindsight it’s insane Brady didn’t attract huge interests in 2020.

If he got released today restructuring his cap hit for Tampa, 15 teams would be interested and he would probably play for 20m/y plus 10m/y for Gronk.

  30. Jerry R Jones Says:

Who cares. He’s evidently a massive piece of sh!t playing ghetto games. Don’t need another Jameis Winston.

  31. Doug Says:

    Give Trask a shot!!!

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Bucs decision for QB should be an easy one……anyone but Trask Gabbert or Watson. Simple as that.

  33. steele Says:

NEPatsFan, from your list (there are more that you didn’t include), I’d take Tannehill over the rest. That’s not saying much.

  34. steele Says:

Pickgrin, you bring up a good point. At this time next year, many of the same bad QBs will be FAs again, and it will be an even worse QB draft than 2022. Given the dearth of options that make any sense (besides going youth and a low-expectation long term window of 3-4 yrs), why sweat this offseason at all? There is nothing much to go all-in for.

How about going 100% entertainment with no serious notions about a SB? Go Ryan Fitzmagic McGregor on a one yr rental. Your “great” veterans can stay or go, but the ones who stay can remain undisciplined and have fun. BA can keep eatin’ and drinkin’ and leave after the next season, taking TB and BL with him.

THEN they can get serious again.

  35. cmurda Says:

The Browns would take a Bromosa for Mayfield. No thanks

  36. Swampbuc Says:

All the options suck. Especially Kyle’s Trashkan. I didn’t know there were so many Quaker Gators. The Gators I know want the names and phone numbers of DWat’s massage therapists.

  37. T REX Says:

Good. Ya freaking morons that want him.

    Turn in your Bucs card.

  38. Swampbuc Says:

Let’s get Tebow! He’s a Christian and won a Heisman and was a better QB than Kyle, who really should start because of all the great film he’s put down in college, and that’s always a predictor of success in the NFL but Tebow is better and he doesn’t get massages and he’s never going to belittle a dominant woman who treats her man poorly!

    Yay Tebow! Next Bucs quarterback!

    YAY!!!!!

  39. Posey99 Says:

Def tampering talk. The big factor with deshaun is no charges have been filed. Pretty hard to prove anything when no cameras are allowed inside those places. Highly doubt he harassed 22 massage therapists. Every other week you see cops at those places shutting them down for prostitution type activities, then another pops up down the road. They just want money and he probably doesn’t want to pay them. I can see what he would want out of the houston area if he had that going on, go get a fresh start in a new city.

  40. Show Me the TDs Says:

There are some things in life more important than football. A huge NO to Watson!!

  41. Swampbuc Says:

A huge NO to anyone who has ever sinned! Only born again players for the Bucs! Players who have never touched a woman, or themselves.

Tebow and Jesus for the Bucs.
