The only difference between Bucs fans watching games this past season and Kyle Trask watching Bucs games was that Trask was handsomely paid for doing so.
In his rookie year, Trask was not active for one game. So he got paid to watch games, basically, and the Bucs made it clear he was a developmental quarterback,
Yesterday on NFL Network, reporter James Palmer noted that while the Bucs have not ruled out Trask completely from being named the 2022 starter, the clear goal is to find a veteran quarterback to start. That’s because, per Palmer, the Bucs are in a win-now mode.
“They really like the development he has had in the quarterback room, with Tom Brady and this coaching staff that is so good at working with quarterbacks,” Palmer said of Trask. “It doesn’t mean [Trask] will be their quarterback [in 2022]. … Nothing is in stone. … He is in play as well as a trade [for a quarterback] as well as free agency. The draft doesn’t seem likely.”
Palmer seemed to back up draft intel that Joe read: if Trask was coming out in the draft this spring, he may have been the first quarterback drafted.
Joe will type this again: If your starting a quarterback has never been active for a game, much less ever taken a snap in a game, you are rebuilding. Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians is 69 and is not returning to the Bucs to coach a rebuild.
Trask could start, but Joe is convinced he would have to beat out whatever veteran the Bucs sign (fill in the blank with a veteran quarterback) or Blaine Gabbert (who is not under contract).
A team in a win-now mode is not going to entrust the offense to a green-as-grass player who has never stepped on an NFL field for a regular season game.

Blaine Gabbert has been in this offense four years. He’s been Brady’s #2 the last two years. At 32 years old he’s 6’5″ 235, can run, and like Arains says, has a cannon for an arm. Why am I the only one saying this guy is going to get his shot to start? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Gabbert had 8 different O.C.’s his first 8 years in the league. No wonder he didn’t succeed. Now in B.A.’s offense that he knows like the back of his hand for four years ya’ll think B.A. is going to throw that away? You think B.A. wants to teach Turbinsky his offense from scratch? Money wise, cap wise, his size, and experience in this offense, he’s going to be the opener. I’m on board with going with Gabbert, Trask.

Every NFL coach is always in a ‘win now’ mode. Whether they are provided the resources to do that with is a whole different matter.
Talk is cheap. Free agents whose agents cry ‘Show me the money’ aren’t.

AT the age of 69, I think BA still has time to put new pieces in place and adjust as necessary. He has done it with at least 4 other QB’s through the years. So I hope his
focus should be on improving the team and getting results even if there are growing pains. Don’t reach for the stars and sign a veteran QB with such a high
price tag that it prevents improvement in other much needed areas.

i think BA has 100% confidence in blaine gabbert to be the “hold down the fort” qb when sh!t hits the fan…
sometimes your starting qb gets knocked around and only plays 10 games in a season, and that’s where blaine gabor, son of zsa zsa gabor, keeps us afloat with a 3-3 record over a 6 game stint, until the starter is ready to go again…
it’s fairly easy to understand…
but tebow madness could be fun fun fun!

Were the opening sentences of this article believed to be true by Joe, it would be one of the most ignorant things he’s ever written. Clearly the difference is tthere is a guy who works all year to understand, first hand, the gameplan and learn and analyze with each play what was happening in the context of what he should do as a player. Compard to a fan who is not even allowed at practice. When you work with Tom Brady all week long, sit in the QB room, and particpate in team activities, that is a key part of any developmental player’s routine. To suggest with any degree of seriousness that Trask was just an interested spectator is plain dumb. Trask earned being picked in the 2nd round, and should have a chance to compete if not for starter, as THE backup, and he can take a couple years to further develop. But my bet is as the free agency period plays out, it will be clear the Bucs are going to have to basically rebuild with just a few key players at the core remaining.

Hodad….I realize Gabbert came in the game at garbage time he has always been AT BEST mediocre. To me, a good backup QB is a guy who can step in and help win at least half the games. I don’t think Gabbert has that in him. Frankly, I don’t think he’s quite as good as Mike Glennon, whom I’m not suggesting is a starting QB at all.

The thing with Gabbert is the players would know from practice if he was capable and if he was, you’d hear guys dropping his name as someone they have confidence in. We’re not hearing any of that from the players….not even Leftwich, its only Licht and Arians. When the Chiefs let Alex Smith leave, they weren’t sniffing around for another replacement of any kind. They KNEW what they had in Mahomes based on what they saw at practice. Same with Rodgers in his early days…..teams know what they got before these guys get in the game. We dont have anything.

If starting Trask is rebuilding, then trading for Watson — after pulling Gruden from ROH for private emails — is the complete abandonment of morals and principles and makes the Glazers hypocrites.

He’s also never been sacked or lost yards on a run. Never lost a game and so on.

Regardless of how things go with the search for QB1, I think it might be worth the Bucs while to try to scoop up Taylor Heinicke either this year or the next. We know he’s at the minimum a capable back-up, so he’d be a good benchmark for Trask to compete with whenever it comes time for the transition.

Blah blah blah. It was the Bucs decision to use him EVERY PRACTICE in scrimmage and I believe that’s working. The Bucs wanted him there in case Brady was hurt n Gabby feel flat on his face. Who’s to say if Trask wasn’t drafted by another team that he wouldn’t be the starter. Just more typical Joe cherry picked anti Trask articles.

Gabbert is a FA. So if you’re resigning him to be the starter, does he want starter money?
I’d be much more agreeable with the comments above if he had 1-year left on a backup deal to see if he had anything left in the tank, rather than paying him 10-12 mil a year for 2-3 years to remind myself he’s just mediocre after all.

I get that Trask is completely untested, but wouldn’t it be prudent to see what this kid can do under live fire for 17 games? Bringing in highly flawed quarterbacks like Garopollo, Cousins, name your bum of choice, and overpaying for them while simultaneously losing out on key free agents because we were stupid enough to overpay for them is counterproductive to say the least. Watson is special and I’m cool with losing a few free agents in order to get him, but these other schlubs are not worth it.

Plain and simple: Kyle Trask is our future and the future is bright! Gabbert knows the system inside and out. He is the best bridge QB until Trask is ready! Yes, there will be growing pains but as Buc fans we need get behind it and support it! Go Bucs!

Joe, you keep bringing up the fact that Trask was inactive each game as if it is an indictment on his ability. It is not! It would not have made sense to have three active quarterbacks on game days when you had needs at other positions. Arians has confidence in Gabbert as the back up, so it only made sense to sit Trask. Trask was a luxury pick last year and there was no urgency to start him. Maybe with hindsight they should have given him some game reps. At any rate, I don’t believe if we start Trask that we are in a rebuild. Let’s see how free agency unfolds first. If the Bucs make a strong push to resign their critical free agents, then the Bucs are not in rebuild mode. If Trask ends up starting, then it is because he was the best man for the job.

With our cap and FA situation, the smart move is to sign an inexpensive vet QB (like Gabbert) and sign your big FAs putting a TEAM around whatever QB is under center.
The GOAT took the better part of a season to learn this offense. So, whether it’s Wilson, Jimmy G, Cousins, Rodgers, or god forbid Watson, there will still be a learning curve. And, if I’m not mistaking, ALL of the QBs listed make north of $20+ million a year (I’m low-balling!).
The Bucs need to be smart about this move. Smart isn’t always sexy!

23 free agents on a team is a rebuilding team. There will not be enough money left to overpay for a flawed QB, and they are all flawed.
I like Trask and do not want this to look like he is QB by default, but he will be QB for the majority of the Bucs season. He might not be the original starter, but with fair competition he should be better than fine.
I find it funny that people are talking about him not being able to stand up to the schedule for next year. There is no such schedule, and what the schedule says doesn’t have squat to do with what the season will look like. The teams that were good this year will take a step back next season, other teams will peak.
The Bucs might find a new peak with Trask, it is the best option for 2022. I await it eagerly.

To be fair to Blaine his only real chance to start since he was the 10 overall pick in Jax in 2011 & half of ‘12. His starting WRs were some guys named Jason hill and Mike Thomas. Not a good team. I’m not saying the Bucs should sign and start him. I’m just saying he might be better than people realize. Trask wasn’t as highly regarded coming out of college and doesn’t have the experience in the system as Blaine. I get that fans want to see what Trask can do given the opportunity but I don’t know he’s ready.

Craig, thank you. I’ve been saying that for years. Rated schedule strength is the most insipid metric in football. Look at it historically. Never works out to be what they thought it would be. The Saints are without their head coach and a quarterback. And their best offensive player will probably miss close to half the season with a suspension. And that’s our toughest division opponent. You can use the same narrative with most of the other teams as well. And of course it works both ways.

Trask played superbly at UF for two seasons in the SEC, settting multiple UF passing records. Bucs fans did not.
Trask played superbly in the 2020 SEC Championship game against Alabama’s Mac Jones (who started his rookie season for the Patriots). Bucs fans did not.
Trask was drafted in the second round and was considered by the Bucs for the first round. Bucs fans were not.
Trask spent all training camp, preseason, regular season, and the playoffs practicing with the Bucs, and learning from Tom Brady. Bucs fans did not.
Joe hates Trask. Like some stupid Bucs fans.

Joe only appears to be anti-Trask because he obviously believes that the Bucs can be a SB contender in 2022 with the ‘right’ QB. Personally I agree with him to the extent that EVERY TEAM is a SB contender when the season starts … right up until they lose enough games to miss the playoffs. And any team that actually makes the playoffs is a SB contender. Cincinnati’s 10-7 record was as bad as anyone’s who made the playoffs, and they came pretty close to winning it all.
Problem I see with acquiring the ‘right’ QB is that they all want money, and preferably LOTS of it. Right now the Bucs have 47 players who we’re paying for in our salary CAP, and I’ll be very surprised if 30 of those are actually on the final 53-man roster. Bucs currently have TWO kickers on our roster, and the odds of both of them making the final cut are pretty much zero.
In that 47 we’re also carrying Brady (retired), plus Gronk & Suh (both of whom are UFAs), with the 3 of them costing us a tad over $32 mil. We’ve also got a number of players signed who were on our Practice Squad but never made the active roster (and probably won’t this year either; they don’t make much however).
IOW the Bucs have LOTS of holes to fill with either draft picks OR FAs OR both; I’m estimating at least 23-25. And of those, quite a few are starters & key rotational players (slightly over half is my guess … someplace between 5-7 on offense & same number on defense). No sweat though; we currently have $6.8 mil in excess salary CAP to make it happen. Piece of cake … we’ve got Jason Licht to work his magic with the CAP numbers. And when he gets through solving that riddle, he’s got some prime real estate in the Everglades to sell each & every one of us.

Gabbert’s contract will probably have a low salary (probably @ $4-$5 million) but will include incentive bonuses that will pay him for # of games started, TDs, Pass yards, completions, play off wins, etc…
Incentive bonuses do not count towards this years cap but will count towards next seasons salary cap. This should help us out a little bit.

Bucsfanman … I wholeheartedly agree with re-signing Gabbert to be in the QB mix. Also though want to see us sign another FA QB to compete with both Trask & Gabbert. Both contracts should be relatively inexpensive, but I have no problem with us putting incentives in both their contracts so that IF they win the starting job, they get paid more (especially IF they win games of course).
As I look at what teams were competitive this past year WITHOUT a big-name (and high-dollar) starting QB, I do see a few. Titans, 49ers, Patriots, Eagles all made the playoffs, but none of them had particularly sparkling QBs. None of them made it to the SB either, but all 4 of those still have weaknesses in their roster beyond QB. Besides, Rome wasn’t built (or reloaded) in a day.

We are all trying to read into everything but the reality is they don’t know at this point. They are researching the free agents and researching what it will take to get Watson or Wilson etc. … Hopefully not Aaron Rodgers.
Trask is destined to be a back up this year or potentially traded.
In order to resign Jensen and Godwin and Davis and potentially Gronk, they need to get some done fast.
As much as we value draft picks, I have absolutely no problem dealing away two first round picks to get Watson or Wilson.

I’m not really sure who this right QB is.
The FA QBs suck they are FAs for a reason. We would need to cough up a kings ransom IF a trade were to happen for a good one which we still need to not resign a lot of players to pay him and we lose draft picks as well.
Build the team for the future. Any team could be a SB contender but we kicked the salary cap can down the road last year and we are paying for it this year.

Problem is they didn’t do it in 2021 with Tom Brady and the 2022 schedule is brutal. They’re not doing it in 2022 regardless of who the QB is. Bringing in an expensive criminal to quarterback the team in 2022 is foolhardy.

It would probably be best to get Trask and Gabbert. See if Trask can cut it if not there are more options next year then this year. Yeah it sucks but the salary cap is a thing and it’s not best to kick the can down the road so we can bring in Bridgewater/jameis/jimmyg/Wentz. Who all are not that good.

It’s also not like the Gators while he was there were overloaded with Talent either. no good O line no running game two good receivers and a generational TE. that was it.

Niles, I went to UF from ‘76-‘81 and have been a Gator fan ever since.
I watched Trask come in to relieve Flippy Franks and spark the Gators. I also saw him throwing to Pitts and Toney, two of the best to ever do it in college. He’d stare them down and force balls to them, a lot of the time they caught those balls.
Those throws will get picked off in the NFL. But hey, you’re a Trask super fan and a real smart guy, and I’m sure you’re right, Trask is the next Joe Burrow. You should call Bruce Arians and give him your assurances. I’m sure he’d appreciate your well educated input.

All yall that hate on Trask college stats when that’s all you have to go buy is how he played in college because he hasn’t played in the NFL yet . I have one question why would you draft a quarterback this year or even next year because the only thing you can go by is what they done college 🤔?? The same thing goes for any player that’s drafted out of college you don’t know what they are until they get a chance to play. So stop haten on Trask and just wait and what he can do just like who ever we draft this year!!

I’d like to see us go all out and get Watson if he checks out and this is overblown, or let Wentz compete against Trask. If Trask can beat out wentz I’d be ok with Trask starting and Wentz would be a decent insurance policy or vice versa.

Also Kadarius Tony isn’t near as good as you’re saying he is. Pitts yes generational. Tony no. Also he had no good run game and the O line was average at best. You’re acting like he was Mac Jones at bama (who turned out to be good in the pros) where he was surrounded by one of the best offenses in the last few decades in college football.

That isn’t anything new with college quarterbacks and even NFL QB’s. Brady didn’t look off corners on every play either. Lots of back shoulder and jump balls but his ball placement was next level. Look at receivers like Evans, Godwin and someone like Cooper Kupp. The defense knows exactly who’s getting the ball.

I am not saying I agree with the choice, but if you have listened very closely all year long and also looked at Bucs cap structure, you will realize that the quarterback under center week 1 in 2022 will be Bridgewater #1, Trask #2, Griffin #3. If Gabbert is re-signed he will back up Teddy and then Trask moves to #3. Trask will get an opportunity to start at some point in 2023.
The only blockbuster could bring Wilson. No Carr, Rogers, or Watson will happen. Neither will Jameis, he is headed to Houston to reunite with the coach that drafted him.

THIS IS TERRIBLY MISLEADING.
While this is true most of the time, it is true because most teams that are starting a QB with zero snaps are starting a rookie QB, likely a high 1st rounder, and they had a high 1st round draft pick because their team is awful.
The Bucs are not that. The Patriots were not that before Tom Brady. The Chiefs were not that before Patrick Mahomes. The Ravens were not that before Joe Flacco. All 3 of those QB’s did very well their first seasons.
This does not mean Trask is the next Brady or Mahomes, maybe Joe Flacco (has a ring at least), but holy cannoli give the guy a chance!

But you still might qualify as a hater if you don’t demand the Bucs start Trask for 17 games, you know, to see what we’ve got. Bottom line – the QBs in camp will compete to start, whoever they are. Unless Brady really does come back. The coaches will pick the starter on the basis of performance – and if it’s not Trask then Niles will squeal like a little girl who dropped her ice cream cone.
Your for example take with Wentz was sensible. Not what Trask lovers are looking for.

LMAO. That’s what FRANKS did. He couldn’t see past the primary receiver.
Trask was the OPPOSITE. He saw the field well and threw to ALL his receivers. And, if his production was due to Pitts, why was his TD production not affected at all when Pitts was injured early in the Georgia game and left? Pitts caught only 1 TD before getting injured and leaving the Georgia game. Trask threw 3 more TDs to win that game. And, Trask completed 30 passes to 10 different receivers that game. This seems like an opportunity to type, but doesn’t really inform us of anything significant. We have no clue who the QB will be, and until something newsworthy actually happens, it will be just more hot air. I guess deep down we all expect this, but heck.. trust the process, and Let’s Go!

Niles, you’re right, Trask never stares down his receivers. I saw him do it a lot, but I was probably watching old film of Rex Grossman. Yes he should be the starter because he’s obviously better than all the other options and you know this because….well, you just know. Good enough for me. BA needs to come out and declare the job is his now because why hold a competition? They drafted the guy, they watched him in practice all last year with the third team. He’s ready. The fact that he didn’t beat out Blaine Gabbert is just a formality, he’s really ready to start in the NFL. His college games are all the proof anyone needs.

Here’s a little nugget for y’all. It’s been reported that during BAs Achilles rehab, Brady and leftwich would come up with the gameplan. Arians would come in later, and take a red pen to a lot of the gameplan. Without Bruce arians meddling, Tom Brady may very well not have retired. This infuriated Brady, and the relationship quickly soured. Ben can’t understand why the organization stuck with BA, over Brady. Brady would’ve been fine with leftwich as head coach. You didn’t have to go get Josh McDaniels, or Billy O’Brien. Now y’all want Arians to “develop” a new QB? Unless it’s a proven vet. Arians judgement can’t be trusted. All they had to do was retire the old man.

It’s kind of strange that so many think Joe hates Trask. Everything I’ve read is pure neutrality from Joe. So anything short of a screaming endorsement demanding that Trask start is hate!
Want to talk Georgia game? In the second half, the Dawgs had three different defenders have balls hit their chests. If any of them could catch, they’d have been pick sixes. Go watch it, find an excuse – I’m sure his receiver fell down or ran the wrong route.

Oh you’ve sold me on Trask. I’m reformed. I watched every game he played in college, and looking back he and not Trevor Lawrence should have been first QB taken. All the people paid lots of money to evaluate players had Trask as a 3rd rounder tops. But not us! The greatness of Trask is about to be unveiled !

JUST LET TRASK PLAY!
Let him start the first 3-4 games next season and see how it goes. If he’s terrible and does nothing but struggle, then you yank him, it’s that simple.
There’s far great UPSIDE to letting Trask start than there is for DOWNSIDE because you can simply bench him if he’s not getting it done and doesn’t seem to have ‘it’ when it comes to the Pro game.
It’s not rocket science. Let Trask start and see what he can do.

BradyBucs, next years offense won’t look like it did under Brady. Ben’s not talking about the results, but the concepts and strategy. Arians had little if anything to do with actual play calls the last season and a half. He’s desperate to prove that he had something to do with it, hence the red pen. Ben Is told that it wasn’t leftwich who Brady was shaking off on the sideline, but Arians. He would get on the set, and attempt to override the play, only to have the goat embarrass him. Arians isn’t capable of teaching a young QB anything other than bad habits. The only chance this team has win, is to get a proven QB willing to stand up to BAs nonsense. Again, why is the bucs management standing up for this guy? Does he know where bodies are buried? It makes absolutely no sense. Leftwich is and was the obvious successor.

Tampon – yes that game. Trask clanged three passes off of Georgia defenders hands and chests, who would have been unimpeded to the end zone. But dawgs can’t catch so Trask was bailed out. He was very careless especially considering that lead you mentioned, but don’t worry. He’ll be a fab Bucs starter. I’m convinced. You got me hooked!

As per your own article and the attached video from NFL reporter, the Bucs coaching staff are pleased with Trask progress and they have not ruled him out to compete as their starter. I am not sure how you compare Trask to an average fan watching the game. That is so irrational.

It isn’t “Trask-hating” to state the fact that Trask is a question mark in every way. Look at film. Look at his preseason games last year, which is the most recent evidence we have. Equal parts good and horrible. At best, a work in progress that the coaches won’t and can’t commit to, under the best of circumstances. He’s not ready.
All this talk of the Bucs being in a “win now” mode. Without TB12, with veterans poised to leave, with internal issues that haven’t been resolved (as far as we know) with bitterness still palpable from losing stupidly, what is this “win now”?
You don’t plug and play anyone into TB12’s slot so easily. THERE IS NO QB ON EARTH who can lead this team as well as he can/could. TB12 simply not being around automatically drops this team to a lower slot.
Is this “win now” because Arians says so, and that’s HIS time frame? Good luck. It’s a bad offseason for QBs, veterans as well as draft. I don’t have a crystal ball, but based on so many issues that need to be addressed, we’re looking far more than one offseason to even think about SBs.
Gabbert? Have you guys looked at tape of his starts with the 49ers? Go ahead and watch them. He’s the epitome of mediocrity. Period.

Jameis never threw a pass in a real game either. He started right away. Of course his first pass in a regular season game was a pick 6. So I don’t buy that Trask story line at all.
