Cheap alternative.
A move like this might just anger Bucs fans.
Four years ago, Joe was a huge fan of Carson Wentz. He finished an MVP-level season when he was leading the Eagles to the NFC East division crown. And then in Los Angeles of all places, it all came crumbling down.
Wentz had his knee blown out on a touchdown run. And one of the NFL’s most exciting quarterbacks was never the same. He hit rock bottom (so Joe thought) in Philadelphia when he couldn’t beat out Jalen Hurts.
His former quarterback coach, Frank Reich, went to bat for him and the Colts acquired him and hoped working with Reich would restore Wentz’s magic. The opposite happened.
So Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic believes Wentz can be had for a loaf of yesterday’s bread.
Wentz has a salary of $22 million ($15 million guaranteed) in 2022, along with a $6.3 million roster bonus. He’s under contract through 2024 but has no guarantees beyond next season. In other words, if things go well, great. You get him for three years. If things go terribly, you’re not tied to him. You can move on after one season.
Predicting compensation for quarterbacks is always difficult. Usually, it ends up being more than anticipated. The New York Jets received three picks, including a second-rounder, from the Carolina Panthers for Sam Darnold. But Darnold was coming from a terrible situation, was on a less expensive contract, and the Panthers were desperate.
In fact, Kapadia thinks the Bucs can pick up Wentz for a mid-round draft pick and with his somewhat low salary, the Bucs could keep some of their big-ticket free agents.
But really, would they? Would Chris Godwin come back to Tampa Bay if Wentz was his quarterback? Would Ryan Jensen? Would Playoff Lenny?
Joe doesn’t believe Wentz is a big enough draw for that. Sure, Wentz could be an OK game manager for a cheap price, but maybe too cheap. He may scare off your best free agents.
And once again, it’s been nearly 20 years since a team won the Super Bowl with a game-manager as their full-time starting quarterback.

CG most probably, because they will tag him, Jensen and Lenny will follow the money, I don’t think the QB situation will seduce them, unless TB 12 comes back……

#1 Colts fan and former player Pat Mcafee said was a heart attack every play, just how erratic Wentz is. Anything could happen on any play lol. Jameis came to real quick to me. Pat was not knocking Carson, but just being a fan of the Colts. So do not really want “Mr Heart attack” behind the center for the Bucs.

Blaine Gabbert has been in the building for the last three years as the Bucs #2 QB. He has miles of tape throwing to Evans, and Godwin, they must all have some sort of chemistry. He’s been Brady’s second QB coach the last two years with input on the game plans. he knows this offense inside, out. There’s a reason he’s been with the Bucs so long. Arains trusts, and loves him. Has said many times he would be more than glad to go to war with Blaine, and was quoted as saying he’s the most underrated QB in football. Had he gotton a chance to play he would’ve opened eyes around the NFL. Arain’s words, not mine. You really should be talking more about Gabbert Joe, because Arain’s is going to give him his chance.

I think Wentz would thrive in this offense due to the down field throws. The guy has a big arm and was once on his way to being the MVP of the league and then that injury happened. He would do big things in this offense and can be had for cheap

Why trade a draft pick and pay that much for a mediocre QB……When we could go with a number of cheaper FA QBs or Gabbert with Trask as backup….or go with Trask…
I’d rather Trubisky, Dalton, Bridgewater, Winston, Flaco, Fitz or Mariota

If our goal is to shoot for the number one pick in 2023, then Wentz is a decent option. Personally, I think that letting Gabbert start all 17 would be a cheaper and better option if losing is the goal.
As far as our free agents go, if they don’t want to be here because of whom we choose to start at qb, then f them and goodbye! Chris is the closest free agent that we have to being a superstar, but he has proven to be extremely injury prone while missing games the last three years. It’s not like we’d be letting Derrick Brooks or Mike Evans just walk folks.

Have a feeling it’s going to be a mediocre 2022 season with 2023 looking bright just bad timing this season in landing a quarterback with out gving up too much at the detriment of the other areas of concern on the team

The Colts offense would have been total garbage without Jonathan Taylor…
C. Wentz does not fit this offense. He is a below average QB and his salary is too high.
I would rather have Cousins but not for the price we will have to pay.
It’s starting to look like Gabbert/Trask is going to be the way to go…

My feeling is they will go Gabbert/Trask……Several teams looking for QB and this draft is not promising on the position.

You can win a SB with a mediocre QB. Trent Dilfer was a first round castoff with our Bucs than went on to win a SB. Brad Johnson, who Arains compared Trask to, also won as many SB’s as Rodgers. Rich Gannon was garbage until he hooked up with Gruden, and won league MVP. I’m not saying Gabbert will do that, but right now he would give us a chance to compete. Trask hopefully pushes, and overtakes him, but if he does good, win, win. Add up cap factors, knowing the offense, his size, and arm, blaine Gabbert just makes sense.

The party’s over. We couldn’t win it WITH Brady in 2021. Now Brady is GONE. Time to rebuild. Let Goobert and Trask duke it out and build offensive and defensive talent around them.

There are zero choices that look good, thanks to Todd’s Bowels and the Horsefaced Commandant joining forces to push Brady into Geezella’s barn .
In the end I fear the Lame Goobert / Kyle’s Trashkan flea circus with a triple covered Mike Evans who will be held under 1000 yards for the first time in his career.
If the Bucs had the ferocious lock down defense of a championship team, this might still be enough to get back to a wild card playoff berth.
But the Bucs obviously don’t, so they won’t.

Might as well go with Jameis again if this is the other alternative. At least you don’t have to give anything up to get JW and the financial side has just as much benefit (not tied to him beyond 1yr). Wentz couldn’t excel with the best RB in the game so it’s not likely he’d fare much better here.

My guess is that being paired with Mike Evans is a bigger draw than the QB .
Afterall they played with Jamis through some bad seasons.

Put his stats next to some of the “better” QBs in the league. Like Josh Allen. You’ll find he didn’t pretty damn well with Michael Pittman Jr and a college scout team to throw to.

He’s a lot better than people think. The scary part is when he becomes a gunslinger and forces things. The Buccaneers offense allows for that, Brady was just more reserved.

For all the people saying lets ride with Gabbert. This guy is proven to be terrible. No arm talent, and a turnover freakin machine when he has played. Just because he knows the playbook does not mean he will be any good.

We have a QB hanging around who had better stats than Wentz in college. He also has been trashed by a low quality team sacrificing him.
Get Trask ready and build a good team around him. If he isn’t ready yet, play Gabbert until he is, or Gabbert does a Fitz.
In 2023, as conference champs, we can do this over again, if Trask doesn’t translate like I think he will.

We could do worse than Carson Wentz. I would talk to our FA’s and get a feel for what they think is acceptable….

I’d roll with a Trask/Gabbert combo before trading for Wentz (or Cousins for that matter) & further limiting the FO’s ability to keep in-house UFA’s.
From my perspective, it really makes more sense to see what Trask can do after a yr of behind the scenes development. Before going all-in on a rental.
If the team backslides & Trask is a flop…That’s not the end of the world…The 2023 QB options (UFA & Draft Class) are better than the 2022 slate & a top10 pick is a better starting point to deal from, if the FO wants to go grab a new QB1.

ever since his early run with the eagles, before he got injured and nick foles took over, he hasn’t really been able to comfortably get planted back into the starter role with what was originally expected of the dude…
it’s like he can no longer really settle in as a starting qb or something to that effect…
so please say no to parson wantz

Wentz is, like Cousins, a decent fit, and an even more watered down workmanlike option. Health concerns are real. He’s always been overhyped and hasn’t proven himself.
Wentz is closer to Blaine Gabbert level. Both are (shrug), .500 season, maybe slightly better. Bucs revert to being just a team in the pack.
