The Bucs And B.J. Hill

February 16th, 2022

Joe is unafraid of the Bucs getting younger and replacing some of their old men.

Great teams and general managers don’t cling to the past and fear change.

Joe types that with Ndamukong Suh in mind. Excellent player, strong leadership type, historically durable. But Suh also is 35 years old, on a limited snap count, expensive and prone to some inconsistency.

Is it time to move on?

Joe thinks it might be, given the Bucs’ many expensive priorities in free agency.

Enter Bengals playoff hero B.J. Hill. He’s also more of a 3-technique-type defensive tackle like Suh, something the Bucs need alongside manbeast nose tackle Vita Vea.

Hill, 26, was stolen by the Bengals from the Giants via trade before the 2021 season. He has missed just one game in his four-year career, and the former early-third-round pick out of North Carolina State is hitting free agency at the perfect time for his wallet. Joe has seen projections that Hill will have multiple suitors and could command above $7 million per season.

Joe sees Hill, known for his work ethic, as a guy with relatively low mileage on his tires and a chance for the Bucs to get younger up the gut of their defense.

Signing Hill and drafting a second-round edge rusher would give the Bucs quite a new look and fresh legs for their front-7.

Ira Kaufman talks about this year’s Hall of Fame vote in a new TAMPA TWO with Derrick Brooks. Another great production from The Identity Tampa Bay and Joe.

We automatically got younger at QB no matter who we have……

I strongly believe it’s time to get younger elsewhere….

JPP, Suh, Succop, Pinion, Jensen Gholston are some examples although I think Gholston is a keeper.

Backup positions like McClendon can easily be switched out for youth.

    Keep Ira…..

  2. Robert Says:

I say we go old skool and bring in guys off the street for workouts.

  3. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Im guessing this guy comes from a nice price tag and probably loves being in Cincy right now with Joe Cool

  4. Swampbuc Says:

    Bowels will just ruin him.

  5. AL121976 Says:

TBF – We should keep Jensen and Gholston, the others can go tho

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

It’s been 3 1/2 weeks since that game. At what point does saying every day that somehow Todd Bowles ruined your life make you a whiny b!tch?

  7. Tony Says:

The perfect way to make it back to the Super Bowl & win it again & the offense wouldn’t even have to do much & they could still bring Brady back. Let Jensen go bring Brady back & MAKE GISELLE THE CENTER! Not only would Tom not snap the ball THERE WOULD BE SO MANY OFFSIDES PENALTIES FROM DEFENSES THAT WE COULD JUST MOVE THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD BY PENALTIES!

  8. Swampbuc Says:

Jerk in Michigan – the fact that the bitching about Bowels annoys you is perfect. Good reason to keep doing it. Why don’t you tell us again about how Tom Brady was a washed up splash hire and would prohibit the Bucs from re-signing their good players?

  9. Swampbuc Says:

    Tony, you’re a fargin’ genius!

  10. Anonymous Says:

Young productive DT’s with potential get paid

  11. Biff Barker Says:

Maybe keep Jensen and most definitely Big Will. Suh isn’t taking enough snaps to command big money.

  12. Adrnagy Says:

What more leadership you want with v vea and one year wonder shaq.

  13. adambomb418 Says:

You are not afraid of a Bengals DL coming to Tampa? I mean, Michael “Ghost” Johnson proved they just play different there, ha.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

It’s going to be difficult for the Bucs to outbid teams for players this off season.

Especially teams like the Bengals who have a ton of salary cap space to work with.

Most of our free agents this year will come out of the “clearance sale” bin…

  15. Stanglassman Says:

BJ Hill is a beast. That entire NC ST DL was amazing his senior year. The tape Hill vs the OL at the seniorbowl practices was a thing of beauty. He would be a great addition.

  16. Eric b Says:

Work the space get creative, it coyld happen. BB did a good job of it. WE NEED TB12 BACK!!!! ONE MORE TOM ONE MORE!!!

  17. Doctor Stroud Says:

We’ve tried to bring in free agent defensive linemen from the Bengals in the past, and it hasn’t worked out too well.

  18. fred Says:

we need to trade for Jeffery Simmons

  19. Swampbuc Says:

One look at the cluelessness of the uncoordinator and his defense in the final 30 seconds of the Rams game, and no one is coming to the Bucs unless Licht has to overpay. No Brady, a Goobert and a Trashkan. WooHoo.

    Party like it’s 2009.

  20. David Says:

    SwampBuc
Bad play call. Worse execution. Not sure why no one wants to call out the pro bowl safety Winfield on that play but he stood there as the best receiver in the NFL just ran by him. Regardless of the blitz call at that point, maybe if Winfield does his job there and doesn’t let the receiver over top of him, they still have a chance.
    But whatever, it’s over.
Todd Bowles is an extremely respected defensive coordinator who worked miracles this year because they didn’t have a pass rush from the front 4 most the time and their entire secondary was a mash unit.

They will have plenty of people willing to sign here

  21. sasquatch Says:

This would be a good move along with adding another interior DL on draft day 1 or 2.

  22. D-Rome Says:

I would like the Bucs to take a flyer on Rasheem Green who played for Seattle for the past few seasons.

  23. Jason from JA Says:

    That might work Tony.
They’d HAVE to work closely together (Mr and Mrs Brady)
Their kids could work the sidelines.
We could TRY to get Arians to make the sidelines PG rated (to keep Brady and family)

  24. Steven007 Says:

Joe in Michigan and David, well said. Swamp, you need a Xanax. Time to stop living in the past.

  25. Swampbuc Says:

Ooh,007, such a bold handle. Are you a secret agent?

How about you take a Midol and insert a tampon. And your complaining only encourages me.

Bowels ruined the season. Until the disarray he caused is sorted out and next season begins, it’s still relevant to take note of Bowels release against the Rams.

  26. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Can we use Dante Fowler? Fowlclowns just released him. Had 11.5 sacks playing next to Aaron Donald last year. Maybe similar numbers playing next to Vea?

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Suh also is 35 years old, on a limited snap count, expensive and prone to some inconsistency.’

You’re absolutely right Joe; Suh is 35, his snaps have been decreasing yearly & he is somewhat expensive (although his productivity seems to warrant the $9 mil that he made when you consider that Vea is getting paid twice as much for less productivity).

But is BJ Hill the answer for what’ll turn out to be roughly the same price? Production last year with the Bengals (5.5 sacks, 4 QB Knockdowns, 5 Hurries, 6 TFL & 50 tackles) in just 505 def snaps (47% ) was more on a par with what Will Gholston got (4.5 sacks, 7 QB Knockdowns, 5 Hurries, 7 TFL & 36 tackles in 507 def snaps (44% ). And Hill’s productivity in his previous 2 years with the Giants wasn’t nearly as good (only 1 sack per season).

Looks to me like the Bucs would be getting another Will Gholston as opposed to a Ndamukong Suh whose productivity is about 50% more than either Hill or Gholston.

  28. Buccos Says:

Pay Suh his money! Let that dude ball for us as long as he wants. That is a HOF’r you are talking about who can still dominate when he feels like it or needs to.

  29. Steven007 Says:

Swamp, I’m sure you don’t remember but I’ve actually defended you and some of your legacy posts before. I know, it makes no difference but I just wanted to point that out because it’s not like I rag on you constantly (though from the sounds of it you’d be delighted if I did). But your attempts at internet burns – [sigh] – are woefully inadequate and embarrassingly juvenile. “take a Midol and insert a tampon” – really? Hilarious! I’m so enraged! Ha-ha – uh, no. Dude, your insecurity is showing. Keyboard warriors do not affect me one iota. I’ll leave it at that.

As for Bowles, he’s the best DC we’ve had in these parts in years. Fact. He also took a giant dump (as well as the players) during that final play. Also fact. But why belabor the point now? Especially when you and I both know that he’s the DC here for now and the foreseeable future? But if this is your hill to die on go on with your bad self.

  30. SlyPirate Says:

    BUYER BEWARE

I don’t know much about BJ Hill his stats took a big jump in his contract season. The two years prior he was the invisible man.

Too similar to Chris Baker. I’d pass.

  31. SB Says:

Funny as sh!t. NOBODY was being a whiny little biotch last yr when we won our last 8 games straight including the Superbowl with a top 3 defense. We didn”t even let the No.1 offense in football score a TD in the SB and EVERYBODY was happy. How quickly the fair weathered turn.
Sad but expected in today’s world unfortunately.
    Get a Frickin Life!

  32. SB Says:

Sounds like Swampbuc is quickly becoming the next Ndog or Listn.
He is doing a good job IMO

  33. PhxBucsFan Says:

Sounds like Swampbuc is quickly becoming the next Ndog or Listn.
He is doing a good job IMO

I was thinking more like TMaxiPad . . . Ndog is another great example.

  34. Swampbuc Says:

On the plus side for you nuzzles, Bowels crapped out of his interviews distracting him from gameplanning, so he will be back ready to blitz his brains out in 2022.

  35. Steven007 Says:

Nuzzles! So cute! And sooooo edgy… Haha. Dude, you’re out of your depth.

  36. Swampbuc Says:

Thanks, counselor. I mean, such heartfelt and sincere advice from you. Get a second tampon.

  37. Steven007 Says:

You’re welcome. It wasn’t advice, just a bit of the truth. And you keep coming back so you obviously need to hear it. Get a second tampon! Dude what are you 12?! What a riot! Hilarious! Such a potty mouth! Aw, I’m sure you’re a good boy at heart.

  38. Steven007 Says:

And one more thing, you should sell that space in your head that you’re renting to me for free. I do appreciate it!

  39. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Gotta keep Suh. He should retire a Buccaneer. He’s been absolutely awesome here. He and JPP are the type of players that we never imagined here and we’d be foolish to do basically the same exact thing we did to the other championship team.
Suh is HOf type player. You keep those guys and draft behind them. FA is for re-signs, huge upgrades or plug and pray guys. DRAFT TRENCHES this year.

  40. Swampbuc Says:

Double oh seven – don’t flatter yourself. Other than your obsession with Todd’s Bowels and his being overly criticized for blatantly and almost willfully destroying the Bucs season and sending Tom Brady to the stable with Horsey, I can’t remember a thing you’ve ever posted.

  41. David Says:

I like SUH as well but I don’t understand people saying keep him and let him retire here… Why? He was darn near worthless last year. I can think of two games where he showed up and none of them were in the playoffs or down the stretch.
Unless he wants to stick around as a veteran rotational back up for at least half the salary he just made, he gone

  42. Steven007 Says:

And yet you come back repeatedly, reacting to things I… Posted. You’re such a generous landlord!

  43. David Says:

At this point everyone should just ignore SWAMPBUC. His ignorance is beyond comprehension. One of the best DCs in football and he wants to get rid of him because of one play. Pathetic.
If the players execute everyone is saying how it’s a brilliant call because no one expected him to blitz there. Instead Winfield stood still as Kupp ran by him. At that point I don’t give a crap what the play call is, the players need to execute, especially the pro bowl players.

Bowles is here for at least another year, hopefully longer. With JPP & SUH being shells of themselves this year and the DBs being a mash unit, we are lucky Bowles was there. Without him this team probably loses a couple more games

  44. Cleanhouse Says:

Suh, Jensen, Fournette, Gholston, most important free agents to sign in my opinion- unfortunately Godwin is hurt so that clouds things- Good to sign him long term but I imagine he wants big big money- we all know the conundrum.
Will it piss him off to be franchised again?

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Cleanhouse … Agree about re-signing Suh, Jensen, Fournette & Gholston. Unless we intend to reinvent the offense, Godwin is also a must-sign. Franchising him though only worsens our salary CAP problem (he’d cost close to $20 mil AND that can’t spread it out over several years if we franchise him). Nah, we’ve got to bite the bullet & re-sign him to at least a 4 yr contract (maybe 5). Providing it’s doable obviously.

More re-signings become ‘doable’ IF we’re willing to ‘go cheap’ at the QB position (big difference between paying $5 mil for 3 QBs versus paying $45 mil for 3 QBs). With some smart salary CAP management, that $40 mil ‘savings’ could pay for all of those 5 players just mentioned, plus probably several quality backup players like Kevin Minter (who played a big role for us last season IMO).

QB is THE key decision far as I’m concerned. Until we decide how we’ll proceed at QB & sign those guys, we won’t know what we have left in salary CAP to sign the remaining huge block of players to backfill our team. And until we backfill this team, we’re not SB contenders. Nice core, but not a truly competitive TEAM. JLL has LOTS and LOTS of critical decisions ahead of him.

  46. Wild Bill Says:

There was not much of a pass rush this past year. The defensive backs were a major weakness. These two areas and QB have to be the focus via draft, trade and free agents. Some aging vets who are way past their prime need to be replaced. Sad but a reality in the NFL.

  47. Buczilla Says:

7 mil for Hill seems a bit steep and Suh, though old, is the better player. I think that we could draft a d lineman with our first round pick and get similar production to those two.
