What Derek Carr Wants
February 16th, 2022Joe was sort of hoping that with just one year left on his contract and a new coach coming in who may want his own guy, quarterback Derek Carr would be shipped out of the desert.
And trading for a quarterback entering the final year of his contract won’t normally cost an arm and a leg.
It appears Carr wants an extension from the Raiders, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Journal-Review. And from that request, we can get a ballpark idea of what Carr may want from his new team if the Raiders decide to move him.
As it relates to Derek Carr and the @Raiders, the sense is no proposals have been exchanged yet on an extension. You’ll see various numbers being thrown around, but, as I’ve been reporting, any extension would likely be in the $40m per season range.
— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) February 15, 2022
So at $40 million, you are looking at Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott kind of bread. That’s about what those guys make.
Joe likes Carr and thinks he is about as good as Prescott but not as good at Watson.
So the question is, if Carr becomes available, is he worth Texas quarterback kind of dough?
February 16th, 2022 at 12:11 am
No QB is worth that kind of money. That is exactly why none of those guys are winning any super bowl. Getting paid that much takes away from the team and getting other good players. Brady knew this and that is why he always took a lot less.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:11 am
Probably not
February 16th, 2022 at 12:41 am
Vea in the wildcat! Run the big guy up the middle! It’s foolproof.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:46 am
Watson can sling it and run exceptionally well. If not for his off field bs, he would be untouchable insofar as trades go. Carr is a good qb, but 40 million per good? Hell no. Dak is good too, but seriously overpaid. Unless the cap goes way up only the best of the best like Mahomes and Allen are worth that kind of money.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:47 am
But why would we care about how much Carr wants for an extension? I thought the point of getting a QB from outside the building this offseason would be to contend for another year while we still have the roster power before we make the swap to Kyle. What would be the point in (assuming we get him) extending Carr at 31 when we could find out what we have with Kyle for cheaper?
February 16th, 2022 at 1:02 am
Yeah if Carr needs to be traded for and it’s that kind of money, it prohibits the Bucs from signing many other key players.
So — either TB12 comes back, maybe Licht and associates will make Geezala an offer she can’t refuse for Tom’s services.
Or, it’s the Goobert & Trashk clown show.
Or it’s Buttwater.
Or (choke) it’s JaMiss.
This is what life looks like without Brady.
And Bowels has probably lost the confidence of the team, so that defense can only get worse.
The free agents — other than Chris , I really think he will re-sign — Lenny, Cappa, Jensen, Gronk, Gio, Rojo — they’ll jump to the highest bidder because they can and honestly, they should.
It’s ok though. Who amongst u,s outside the Pudriot trolls that insist on clinging to this site like a hairy wart, isn’t used to enduring 5 and 6 win seasons?
Welcome back, Yucs.
February 16th, 2022 at 1:04 am
Carr’s not worth anything close to that $40M/yr #….$40M is = to the entire current Bucs “under contract” 8man OL….
Maybe he’s trying to price himself out of a long-term deal with the Raiders??
February 16th, 2022 at 1:05 am
Dak has proven that he is elite. He has become a top 5 QB in the league. Derek Carr is nowhere near that good. He may be top 15 by that is about it. He is never going to put a team on his shoulders and lead them to the promised land. He is dec my but ai wouldn’t pay him more than 25 mil per.
February 16th, 2022 at 1:15 am
ohhhhh i get it…so gisele wants a briefcase too 🙂
February 16th, 2022 at 1:15 am
The only QB worth that kinda dough would have been Brady, but he was smart enough to spread the wealth.
February 16th, 2022 at 1:17 am
lol at dak is elite…clowns should be banned ^^^^^^
February 16th, 2022 at 1:22 am
I agree adam. Dak is elite……………(snicker snicker) because he’s on the Cowboys and they get such unwarranted hype from the America’s Team Media brigade BS. It was fun watching them go down in pathetic flames against the Niners. I would take Derek Carr over Dik myself but definitely not pay either of them $40 million. However if the market is set and that’s a price, then we’ll be enjoying Lame Goobert overthrowing receivers, throwing interceptions, taking sacks, and yielding to Kyle’s Trashk who will do the same but with less ball velocity.
So Licht is really in a jam. I blame Bowels.
February 16th, 2022 at 1:54 am
What Carr wants is more than he is worth. But just watch. The market for QB is going to be the most ridiculous you’ve ever seen. Bad QBs will be ASTRONOMICALLY overpriced and signed by desperate fools trying to out-Matt Stafford everyone else.
It comes down to harsh simple realities. Brady or no Brady? Brady chose to walk into the sunset with the horse-faced commandant. Wishy-washy? Not acceptable. The door cannot be held open for him unless he lets this team go into the draft and free agency with no direction.
All-in for a SB one more time, or lower expectations and adopt a 2-3 year time frame? Bucs won’t have the assets or a competitive position vs. other teams, even if Licht wants to go all-in. But most importantly, there is no QB who can plug-and-play into this team replacing Brady, who is, yes, the only QB who can do it with this team as it is comprised.
That leaves the more modest goal. Keep a few of the veterans, but let most walk because they are overpriced. Strengthen the trenches, OL and DL (the only way to be the bully).
Assess Trask’s value right now, and decide exactly what he is, a starter (I’d be surprised), or a backup or a trade chip. Draft smartly. If no Brady, consider Pickett. Then edge, CB, OL, RB. Avoid all the big name overpriced QBs—Rodgers, Wilson etc. won’t be reachable. Avoid all of the sucky free agent QBs. Trade modestly for an under-the-radar QB from another team who has the tools and has won as a starter before (Mike White, Drew Lock) and might blossom with new team. Open camp with an open QB competition.
February 16th, 2022 at 2:01 am
Steele I swear you need to be at the table at One Buc. It’s tough to face the truth. You are.
February 16th, 2022 at 2:01 am
I’d tune in to watch that- I think he has the grit to win. I like him.
February 16th, 2022 at 3:08 am
Do you remember who was lobbying for Antonio Brown as hard as Brady was? None other than Russell Wilson. Begged for AB. Licht and Brady bringing in AB was, in hindsight, season-ending poison.
Imagine if AB had instead ruined the Seahawks, done nude jumping jacks up there. Pete Carroll wouldn’t have been able to deal with him either.
Imagine if Licht had instead signed Odell Beckham instead of the Hollywood Rams.
Would we be here celebrating a SB repeat instead of fretting about Kyle Trask?
February 16th, 2022 at 4:03 am
What David Carr wants? The story is about Derek.
February 16th, 2022 at 4:21 am
If I’m the Glazers, I’m offering Tom Brady a forever-future with the Bucs as Player/President/Owner/QB Coach (when he does finally retire).
Give Giselle some equity, Baby! Give Tommy control! Licht reports to Tommy…Tommy gets that eighth ring on his finger and then gives Giselle those puppy dog eyes and says, “I feel so incomplete. I mean, look honey…my thumbs are so lonely!” He then finally retires after winning his 10th Super Bowl.
The Glazers become the wealthiest franchise owners in history all because they gave up a few points to Giselle! SMART!
If I were the Glazers…
February 16th, 2022 at 4:25 am
YIKES ten foot pole numbers NO THANKYOU 40 Million a season Bye Bye little birdie
GO BUCS!!!!
February 16th, 2022 at 4:40 am
This is my number one choice. I live in the bay area in California. I watch Raider games all the time as they are still broadcast locally. This guy is a warrior Who sincerely wants to win
And is willing to do the small things. Please let this happen please. Trade a second a third a a 2 next year we still are set to win NOW
February 16th, 2022 at 5:09 am
Steele … ‘Keep a few of the veterans, but let most walk because they are overpriced. Strengthen the trenches, OL and DL (the only way to be the bully).’
Letting most of the veterans walk plays well in Peoria, but replacing them with comparable talent that can actually get results on the field doesn’t come cheap (not to mention the strong leadership guys like Jensen & Suh provide). Hard to replace quality vets with draft picks because very few newbies perform at a high level while learning the ropes, even 1st Rnd picks.
Agree totally about ‘strengthening the trenches’ or in our case ‘keeping the trenches strong’. Bucs had one of the best OLines that money could buy for these past 2 years (ours does happen to be one of the most costly). Our DLine is aged for sure (Suh, McLendon, Gholston plus JPP if you consider him a DE) and needs to get younger, but that’s near impossible to do in a single year. What are the odds of effectively replacing all 4 that I just mentioned with cheap draft picks and/or others?
February 16th, 2022 at 5:28 am
Joe … ‘So at $40 million, you are looking at Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott kind of bread. That’s about what those guys make.’
Spending 20% (or more) of your salary CAP on a single player … QB or otherwise … is poor management IMO. Owners who overpay for the Watsons, the Prescotts, the Wilsons, and yes even the Rodgers don’t seem to be hoisting the SB trophy very often.
Tom Brady was smarter than all of those other top-tier QBs. He always kept his salary reasonable ($25 mil a year with us) which allowed management to sign higher quality weapons & protection to support him on the field. That $15 mil difference can buy a lot of groceries … especially when you get to play with Tom Brady.
I like David Carr (oh and Derek too Joe) but not at $40 mil a year. Could see $25 mil a year, but I’d much rather see us spending our salary CAP dollars on building a quality TEAM, not just on one player.
February 16th, 2022 at 5:30 am
qb’s taking around 40 mil in cap space per year just care about lining their pockets beyond belief…
no matter how much they claim they care about their team, they don’t…they really don’t
my johnson simply could not handle 40 million dollars worth of hookers, and that’s a fact
February 16th, 2022 at 5:41 am
i watched a show once early this season about ranking quarterbacks in the league…
if i recall correctly, it was florio and phil sims…
it was interesting…i said to myself “cop a squat and see what this is about”…
it was pretty good…they were ranking all strting nfl qb’s…they detailed and discussed all the qb’s…the elite would be like the top 5…tom was there as well as the other few usual suspects…
dak in their minds if i recall correctly, came in somewhere between 10-15…
a lot of guys were ahead of dak including a lot of the young guns like burrow and herbert and josh allen…
after an extensive discussion, dak had at least dozen guys in front of his as per said dudes…
so in conclusion, dak is a very good quarterback…even top
tier-ish…
elite?…well that’s a whole other ballpark…
elite is top 3…maybe top 5
February 16th, 2022 at 5:45 am
^^^^^^^^
geez…a bunch of typos…i need that morning coffee…sorry dudes and dudettes
February 16th, 2022 at 5:51 am
Dithering will get the Bux to Gabbert as the top QB’s make their deals.
February 16th, 2022 at 6:03 am
Stars are aligning for Watson to Tampa, just as they did for Brady . The football Gods still have their hands on the organization let’s keep riding the wave !
GoBucs!
February 16th, 2022 at 7:32 am
$1,338,750
That’s what Kyle Trask makes…..if we give him a shot, we have $38,661 250 to spend on other players.
That’s Chris Godwin, Davis, Jensen of z number of other combination….
No thanks to the $40mil QB
February 16th, 2022 at 7:36 am
Nope because once they get the money the rest of the roster suffers. Tom Brady is the only guy who’s been back to a super bowl more than once since 2010 and that’s partially because he doesn’t demand that kind of salary.
February 16th, 2022 at 8:04 am
Enough with Brady giving us a great deal. There was a risk for our Bucs, his age, playing elsewhere and a different coach. Well his deal will suck in 2024..
The Buccaneers will have a $24 million cap hit in 2023 regardless of whether Brady plays for them or not. That’s because of the void years attached to his contract.
Wake up, most $$QB contracts are you proved it and you are our franchise or we saw some good stuff and are invested. The Trask pick put us in a bad spot, now. The Bucs expected TB12 to stay another and MAYBE help Trask. The great ones focus in themselves! Otherwise they are not great. The notion let’s draft a guy high and he’ll lead us to a Super Bowl is frequent, but rarely works.
If we want to continue with success of the last 2 years we have to make a big move for a QB. It’s Russ or Watson.
February 16th, 2022 at 8:16 am
It’s not just the 40 million you’d pay him, you’d also have to trade for him. Vegas isn’t giving him away. Joe’s just hung up on Carr, and can’t let go. The Bucs will resign Gabbert, and start him. They will hope he has a Rich Cannon type second act to his career. If not they hope Trask can be the answer. If they both fail, they’ll look in earnest next season. For now, it’ll be Gabbert, and Trask. You know it’s true Joe.
February 16th, 2022 at 8:39 am
On the Bucs Carr would be the best QB in the NFC South if that is saying much.
He is a quality passer and has a quick release. Nothing to pass up.
Contract-wise he is over-valuing his worth. How many playoffs and AFC West championships has he won over the years? He isn’t a QB that can carry a team to a SuperBowl.
Matt Stafford had Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald win that game. He was greatly helped by a PI call on the goal line that Bengal linebacker made a clear play on the ball. All game long officials were letting the grabbing and tugging go without any flags. Stafford is good but threw a perfect interception in the NFC championship game in 4th quarter that Niner’s dropped. A historic muff that would have given Niners the ball and allowed them to burn clock and never get Rams in position to kick game winning FG.
February 16th, 2022 at 8:40 am
Vea in the wildcat=yes! Lol
February 16th, 2022 at 9:23 am
You guys are aware, that Giselle earns approx. 40m per year? So, maybe some flowers or an invitation to a restaurant won’t change her mind…
February 16th, 2022 at 9:23 am
Swampbuc still jealous of Giselle. Sigh.
February 16th, 2022 at 9:27 am
And to the Watson chatter: If you take the Jameis’ suspension for the ähem ‘Uber hassle’ as a measuring stick Mr. Watson will be suspended by te league for at least one full year – guilty or not as we learned from deflate gate.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:22 pm
Just enter Geezella into the Kentucky Oaks horse race the day before the Derby. Although she may have to pass a test to prove she is a female.
That would create a lot of stir and exposure, maybe give her something to focus on besides telling Tom what to do every day. German Buc is right, a mere briefcase full of money and a bag of oats won’t be enough.
February 16th, 2022 at 12:54 pm
Tom didn’t leave for Giselle, he left because he doesn’t view Tampa as a contender even with him playing next season. To convince him to return, you’ll need to keep the o line, and get even more weapons beyond Evans, and keeping Chris and Fournette. Tom wants it all an AB, Gronk, Chris. Evans, a better TE2, better RB2 and I think he even wanted Odell mid season. Which would’ve been cheap and huge when AB flipped. Tom wouldn’t have been angry as Odell could’ve played for AB and AB could’ve been cut.
While I understand the cap issues Tom was cheap for his level of play and value, AB was near vet minimum (1m), and Gronk was cheap for what he is. Many stars took pay cuts to win in 2021. But as Tom alluded to yesterday he envied how the Rams went all in to win a SB, “You’ve got to go for it”. He was never retiring in 2021 until the organization got complacent and cocky at the end of the season and assumed you can win a SB a with third stringers and injured guys. What happened to Rams when Odell went down they couldn’t do anything except throw to Kupp and needed 3 penalties to score one TD, and you expected Tom to just target Evans and fournett every throw for 3 playoff games and win a title.
February 16th, 2022 at 5:08 pm
Tommy likes winning titles. Not making excuses and keeping the idiots around that lost the chance at repeating. I don’t blame him one bit. We’ll be exposed big time next year against a very tough schedule. 4-6 wins max regardlesss of which non Brady QB. It’s a Yucs life again.
February 16th, 2022 at 9:21 pm
Sound like what our old QB wanted. Look where he ended up, under a 1 year 1 million dollar contract.
Carr isn’t worth it, he chokes too often.
