Sean Murphy-Bunting Clutch In Playoffs
February 15th, 2022Joe was going through stats last night and came across something pretty cool.
Joe knows some Bucs fans gripe about the cornerbacks. No, they didn’t play that well last year and part of that was they were injured. Let’s just say they were inconsistent.
And it seems whenever fans are upset at the Bucs corners, Sean Murphy-Bunting always takes quite a few arrows. No, he’s not a great tackler and he struggled in the playoff loss to the Rams.
Now in the 2020 Super Bowl run, SMB had three picks in the postseason. Only two active player have more picks than SMB in the playoffs: Richard Sherman and Duron Harmon both with four.
Joe likes players that make big plays in the biggest games. So while SMB didn’t have a great 2021 season because he was hurt most of the time, Joe thinks he will bounce back (provided he stays healthy) in 2022.

His fall down, attempting to single cover Cooper Kupp, resulting in a 25 yard gain, out of bounds to stop the clock, was a thing of beauty.
He had been struggling. Todd’s Bowels left him to hang out to dry on that play. Of course the following play, the “cover no one” defense where no one knew their assignment and no one blitzed effectively if they even knew they were supposed to, was even more brilliant.
Stunning that Todd doesn’t have a head coaching job after all that interviewing the week before the Rams game. Good thing his team was well prepared, otherwise it would reflect poorly on Bowels.

Bunting is one if the worst corners in the league.
February 15th, 2022 at 1:20 am
Our corners problem CD3 not able to catch picks
SMB lost in zone coverage can’t tackle in open space
Dean refuses to believe what he sees and jumps a route
..fast as hell but a stick in the mud in coverage..coverages… he can tackle tho

SMB reminds me of Ron Burgundy’s cologne, effective 30% of the time, but in general he just stinks like s(p)it.
February 15th, 2022 at 1:51 am
Swampbuc, you nailed it again.
Kupp absolutely humiliated SMB on that play. Glorious stats don’t make up for one of the two disasters that cost the Bucs, well, everything, wasted what was the most amazing Brady comeback and what I still believe would have led to a SB repeat, just eight quarters later.

Was a key guy in the super bowl playoff run. Give him a pass in that last game this year. Injuries and rusty?
February 15th, 2022 at 5:36 am
To those who say SMB sucks, I present to you your alternates: Pierre Desir and hamstrung Richard Sherman!
Only losers think everyone sucks.
February 15th, 2022 at 6:51 am
He sucks. He’s not good. Draft a starting corner w the 2nd round pick.

I thought the world of SMB after his performance in last year’s playoff run. Then I watched him get toasted n injured in game against cowboys the first game of the year. So I went back to watch his performance from 2020 season before playoff n Super Bowl. I then watched his games after returning from injury this year, I must give my objective overview of him, SMB is a bust, really. I looked back n notice this guy consistently miss simple tackles that result to big gains. I couldn’t believe it. He’s fragile, passive, n slow. Let’s quit bailing the likes of SMB n OJ Howard out with excuses for poor performance are results to recovering from injuries. Players are cleared to return to play because they have healed from injury n not cleared to return because they are still injured.

I know y’all hating on SMB when he was covering kupp but seriously there’s not a DB that can cover up 1 on 1. In the SB they double him n he still gets open. That guy is a freak n that’s coming off a acl injury. I hope CG can come back like kupp did. But seriously kupp is prob the best route runner since AB prime days. His cuts are clean n precise. You just can’t stick with the kupp

The most positive thing about Bunting, he will catch it if he is in position. Trouble
is, he is not in position often enough. He often trails receivers in coverage and he has averaged only 3 pass defenses in the last two years. In the 2021 playoffs he was a nonfactor in pass defense with 0 INT’s and passes 0 defended.

Lol Alaska Buc
Sex panther….
He certainly has not impressed overall very streaky player and unfortunately the good streaks aren’t long
February 15th, 2022 at 7:49 am
He sucks he couldn’t cover my grandfather and he’s dead get rid of him !
February 15th, 2022 at 7:50 am
The only people who decide if the players are good or not are the coaches.
February 15th, 2022 at 8:14 am
We have to draft another corner pretty highly.
Maybe even draft one, and also sign a vet like Patrick Peterson.
Pass defense can’t be such an obvious weakness to attack for opposing teams. The run defense is going to stay top 10 as long as we have Vita Vea and Devin White.
February 15th, 2022 at 8:17 am
The entire secondary was “meh/blah”…..based on Bowles play calling in the last 45 seconds of the rams game, he had more confidence in blitzing everyone than our CBs ability to cover well enough to burn the clock out.
February 15th, 2022 at 8:40 am
He is garbage and has made a bunch of highlights for the other teams WRs; the fact that Bowles thinks he can cover well in man says a ton about Bowles ability to coach and scout DB talent
February 15th, 2022 at 8:42 am
The Bucs have drafted a bunch of good CBs, but he isn’t one of them. Need competition for him in the off-season.
February 15th, 2022 at 9:08 am
He’s called Burnt Toast for a reason. I would rather have a corner who can cover on a regular basis and is a good tackler than someone who’s only good for a few big plays here and there. Burnt Toast cares more about looking good than being good. He’s soft as Twinky filling and has no heart. Swampbuc please, Bowles wasn’t on the field and it’s not his fault they were confused. They’ve been in his system for 3 years and if I’m correct the MLB is the one supposed to make sure everyone knows the call. When do the players get blamed for not knowing their assignments?
February 15th, 2022 at 9:13 am
Whitehead is second to AWjr in the secondary. Davis really overrated and if he’s not it’s because the other CB are so bad. Drop Davis, resign Whitehead, get an above average and average CB in the second and fifth round. I don’t remember when the Bucs CB had a solid CB krew.
February 15th, 2022 at 9:17 am
* Drop Davis, resign Whitehead, get an above average and average CB in FA and draft in second and fifth round.
February 15th, 2022 at 10:12 am
That’s the risk of concentrating on a single summary stat, even if it is an important one. It’s one thing to intercept a pass, it’s another to be solid at pass coverage. The latter is more important.
That’s the problem with JC Jackson who figures to be the premier free agent CB, along with Carlton Davis. Jackson is outstanding at picking-off passes, but he is just “good” but not near-elite at pass coverage. To be frank, you should always approach INTs with a bit of caution, generating good INT numbers can also mean that you’re putting the team at risk.
February 15th, 2022 at 11:02 am
The Bucs secondary pretty much since the days of Monte, has been a unit that is
not very good at man to man coverage.
But, at least they get confused playing zone, can’t read the receivers coming at them, and basically suck at zone.
So, they can’t cover man to man but at least they can’t play zone.
Perfect.

Too inconsistent.
Makes some great flash plays here and there, but is routinely burnt in between. It did seem like his tackling was starting to improve for a few games, but then he looked pathetic against the Rams…
February 15th, 2022 at 12:56 pm
I’ll take consistent coverage and solid tackling over splash plays and trash tackling any day of the week.
February 15th, 2022 at 1:31 pm
What have you done for me lately? SMB us horrible. How can you play professional football on D and can’t tackle. How many 3rd & 2 or 4th & 3’s did we see him hit the receiver short of the 1st down marker yet get carried 4 yards past the marker. If this team doesn’t acquire a shut down corner How can you expect another run at anything?
February 15th, 2022 at 2:01 pm
I don’t blame SMB. The coaches use the best they have available. The real problem is the team got by with mediocre dbs in the Superbowl run last year because the pass rush was awesome. This season the Bucs had a lousy pass rush. Age and injuries? Some of both. We would easily gotten to the Super Bowl this year if we still had last year’s pass rush. Simple as that. No pass rush left an average db group exposed all year. Add in injuries and it got b even worse. We had no name free agent dbs much of the season and the Rams and Nrw Orleans had dam good receivers. Kupp ate us up both times.

Damn sure looked good to me taking one away from the nfl’s mvp drama queen in last years playoff, Up in Green Bay…
