If The Bucs Want To Go Slumming…

February 14th, 2022

Cheap alternative.

There may be a cheap option if the Bucs are looking for a playoff quarterback to replace Tom Brady.

Joe is using “playoff” with a very liberal definition of the word.

Though it is hard to believe since he’s been on good teams, Colts quarterback Carson Wentz has only played in one playoff game. He started for the Eagles against the Seahawks in 2020 and threw but four passes.

Wentz, who is as brittle as a potato chip, really hasn’t been the same quarterback since he blew out his knee late in the 2017 season with the Eagles. He was on his way to an MVP year.

Now Wentz appears to be available, per Chris Mortensen of BSPN, who reported yesterday the Colts are looking to unload him.

Wentz is sort of a poor man’s Kirk Cousins and Joe doesn’t know if he’s any better than Jimmy GQ. He may, however, be much cheaper than Jimmy GQ. And who knows how good he may be surrounded by talents like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and Playoff Lenny while playing behind a stud offensive line.

Only Colt TBBF is interested in is x-Colt Andrew Luck…….BA needs to invite Luck to his lake house & get him really drunk and talk him into coming out of retirement to play for the Bucs.

  2. BamaRich Says:

    NO

  3. Rick Says:

    I wouldnt mind him.

  4. JS Says:

No thanks. I would rather hold my nose and start Trask.

  5. Kalind Says:

They can do a helluva lot worse….(Trask)

  6. Jordan Says:

Like the idea of him or Trubisky, and then focusing on the rest of the team.

If Brady really does want to go to SF, a 3 team trade with 49ers and Packers would be a great way to get Rodgers to Tampa. Jimmy G to GB and 2 first round picks, Brady to SF, Rodgers to Tampa.

  7. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I said it last night. I think this is Arians QB. I think he’s Carson Palmer the second. My only concern is how brittle he is.

  8. allbuccedup Says:

Its going to be slim pickens for QBs this year. Green Bay is promising Whining Rodgers anything he wants so hes not going anywhere. Russell Wilson seems happy. The Raiders are going to give Carr an extension. Wentz is trash might as well go with Trask or bring back Jaymiss.

  9. zzbucs Says:

Every QB named for the Bucs is a sort of a gamble, except for TB 12….

Maybe I am tired of al speculation…..I am conviced that whoever the QB, the Bucs roster will still a very good one….

With no Brady,as It looks like, I will choose the cheapest one…Because all of the qb out in the market have pros and cons…….

So whoever comes, with the exception of the turn over machine, will have my support, plain and simple

  10. posey99 Says:

This seems the most logical. Value, upside, etc.

If Watson were to checkout and the glazers gave the nod, he’s probably the most talented QB available. Obviously lots of homework there.

Cousins I really like aside from his contract, Licht could probably rework it somehow.

Either of these guys and Trask I think we are set.

  11. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I said it last night. I think Wentz is Carson Palmer 2.0. I think Arians is going to resurrect his career with the players around him.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

    Cheaper than Jimmy G?

    OTC has Jimmy G at @ $27 mil and Wentz at @ $28 mil…

I don’t want either for that kind of money and neither does their current teams.

  13. Oxycodoms Says:

Qb will only take the team so far . Dline needs to be upgraded

  14. Oxycodoms Says:

Saving money on a guy like wentz to spend on rest of team may be the answer injury prone though risky investment

  15. Craig Says:

If the Bucs really want to go slumming they can get Blake Bortles. He might even give them money to come here, kind of a recycling of Jags leftover QBs.

  16. Nate Says:

    Kyler Murray anyone?

  17. tampabayallday Says:

    Cousins over wentz

  18. PassingThru Says:

Good Lord. Just suck for a season and take the pick of the litter next season. Handing the car keys to Wentz isn’t the answer.

  19. Architek Says:

    No Wentz
    No Jameis

    Just all No.

  20. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

It might not be the cheap option, but rather the only option.

  21. Phred Says:

Sign a journeyman veteran, let them compete with Gabbert for the starting job. Keep the team intact, improve the O-line and let Fournette, Evans and Godwin make our mediocre quarterback look special.

Think that’s our best shot at winning. Also, would give TB12 all season to “un-retire.”

  22. Jfgobucs Says:

    Could be our brad johnson

  23. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

If you want to save dollars and get experience , Minshew or Mariota would be far better options. Either one would thrive here. However if you want to go right back to the Superbowl , Wilson is the holy grail.

  24. Robert Says:

Better get a brick at QB cause he will get mauled.

I say run with Trask, Gabbert while we develop younger talent in the trenches.

And, can we please trade ME while he has value!!!!!!!!!

  25. PassingThru Says:

Look, Wentz got massacred in Phili, a fresh start in Indy was just what the doctor ordered to resuscitate his career. Indy overpaid, but their roster screams “Win Now” so I understand their plight. The result? That massacre in Phili took a toll, Wentz looks like a broken man.

  26. DrunkInYbor Says:

No thanks! Also is it safe to say everybody thinks Vernon Hargreaves is a jack apple now.

  27. Phred Says:

There are no good options at QB. Can TB12 be replaced?

Rest of the team looks good enough for a SB run. We’ll have a mediocre QB and still do well.

The Ravens won a SB with Trent frickin’ Dilfer!

  28. DrunkInYbor Says:

No Watson either! Dude has been accused by how many women of sexual assault. He’s going to settle. But that’s a bad bad sign. Also a moral no from me but to each his own. Famous J. also made m cringe with his off field crap

  29. TheBeachBoy Says:

No, no, no no. My dad is a huge Colts fan and I had to hear about Wentz all season and please……just no.

  30. Phred Says:

    “Jfgobucs Says:

    Could be our brad johnson”

    Exactly.

  31. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Arians has always been high on Wentz, but in Indy he had the best running game in the league + a great defense, and was unable to do much at all.
I am not entirely sold on him.

  32. Duane Says:

Wentz is too fragile and had the good fortune of having Taylor carry that offense. Best case scenario is we keep throwing around names of stiffs like Wentz and Jimmy G, and Brady gets so frustrated that he has to come back sooner than July. In order to speed up this process, let me suggest Andy Dalton, Nick Foles, and Fitzmagic.

  33. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Signing Wentz, Jimmy G, or Bridgewater is just another way of giving Trask a shot, since all will get injured for multiple games next season.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

@Phred: I am not at all sure this D can dominate to the extent a Brad Johnson-type QB could bring a Lombardi.

With few exceptions, the Bucs have won by outscoring opponents, not by stopping opponents.

Without Tob Brady, even the offense is not as potent.

  35. Cobraboy Says:

    Tom

  36. Robertg Says:

Why would we trade ME? Best reliable receiver we have. Some fans think the answer is to trade away great players, for what? Picks? We need to release jjp and get another pass rusher. Resign Suh and our corner

  37. HC Grover Says:

Trask and hope for Brady back. Simple. Draft some Beef. Get rid of the flotsom tried and failed players. Find a couple undrafted FA.

  38. EEK Says:

    we could do worse

if Brady decides to come back mid-season, Wentz could find a comfortable seat on the bench or be waived to make room

I like the idea a lot

  39. HC Grover Says:

Make Brady the offer he can not refuse. I want Brady back.

  40. VSyl Says:

Please no Wentz. This guy sucks badly. I would rather see myself (i’m bad) throwing for the bucs than this guy.

  41. tampabuscsbro Says:

    Honest to god.

The Trask haters should want Trask over Wintz.

  42. Buczilla Says:

Lol, no. I’d sooner see Jameis here than this dude.

  43. Brian Says:

All this talk about Godwin recently got me thinking. Who carried the Rams O in the SB? Kupp.

Who did TB12 look to in last years SB? None of the guys that were here prior to TB12.

  44. Listnfrmafar Says:

You get what you pay for. Ask Bill Belichick, he learned the hard way. It cost Kraft $163 MM to fix what he broke.

  45. Bqen green Says:

    He’s a bust.

  46. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

INO Wentz seems to play a bit “timid”, as if his confidence is completely in the crapper now. If the Colts cut him then maybe bring him in to compete with Trask, but I wouldn’t expect much out of Wentz at this point. Plus if you look at his time in Indy he needed a great RB to open play action, so if the Bucs let Lenny walk I’m not sure the Wentz-Bucs fit will work?

  47. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Bucs already have a red headed # 2 @ QB that 75% of the fan base isn’t thrilled about. They good…

  48. FairMinded Says:

If we can’t get Garoppolo or Wilson, honestly Wentz is not a bad alternative at all. Would take him over Teddy B or Trubisky.

  49. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Thanks for the report. This is the kind of stuff I’m looking for at this time of year.

Now I will check out Mr. Wentz for myself and then decide whether he is in my mix or not. I’m hoping we will find someone who is capable of taking us somewhere in the playoffs next January.

    Go Bucs!

  50. Bobby M. Says:

He’s an a-hole that burns bridges everywhere he goes….no thanks. Nobody will want to play with him, it will be like having Winston all over again.

The NFL is constantly starving for QBs….for two teams in two years to send you packing with moderately decent stats should tell you he’s a head case, no different then AB but this is the leader of your franchise.

  51. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Jordan, your idea intrigues me. Any more details?

It would be really bizarre if we found ourselves facing Tom and SF in the NFC championship game! (If we had Rogers I would have to bet on San Fran.)

  52. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    Rodgers

  53. ocala Says:

He is the only QB that was always wearing his mask when he was not playing. No other QB in the league was even close to as good as he was at wearing a mask. Masks do not work so he still got the virus, but he was the best at wearing one in the league.

  54. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Unlike some of you I have faith in Bruce Arians and staff to bring out the best in whoever becomes our starter. I believe he still has some of the “QB Whisperer” left in him in spite of the fact he gave up on Jameis after only one season. (I think he already had the “insider info” that he would find TB behind door number two ultimately.)

    Go Bucs!

  55. firethecannons Says:

no thanks to wentz rather roll with Trask if it is between those 2

  56. Hodad Says:

Blaine Gabbert will start the season, Trask will back him up.

  57. Swampbuc Says:

Run Vita Vea in the wildcat. All QB options except TB12 suck. Just bash the big guy up the middle every play.

  58. Swampbuc Says:

And before some genius gets all indignant, imagine being facetious.

  59. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Hodad

    I’m still with you bro… Gabbert/Trask

That’s really all we can afford.

  60. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Phred, all Dilfer had to do was just manage the game for Baltimore that year!

This was something Jameis Winston with his overflowing athleticism and raw QB skills could never seem to grasp. Don’t know yet if he finally learned this under Sean Peyton. There is nothing wrong with his brain. He has a very high IQ.

More water under the bridge! Just saying.

  61. steele Says:

Wentz is a watered down Cousins, a half notch better than Trask or a rookie, or Blaine. Few of the obvious veteran QB options offer more than a Rex Grossman ceiling.

Watch: they are all going to be getting outrageous offers in this crazy market. Everyone will be trying to imitate the Rams and Stafford, and paying up for losers. I sincerely hope the Bucs aren’t foolish enough to waste huge assets for any mediocre place holder.

Best options, IMHO, remain cheap trade for a veteran who is good and overlooked, or draft Pickett. And evaluate the heck out of Trask.

  62. Sport Says:

Here’s some more spaghetti on the wall.

    Andrew Luck

    In BA I Trust!
