Bucs OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
Hey, when you are the Super Bowl champions — and the Bucs are for a few dozen more hours — you don’t get to draft where you want the next year without giving up a load to trade way up in the first round.
So when folks put out “redraft” stories, they are kind of useless. A redraft is serious rear-view mirror logic and woulda-shoulda voodoo. But Joe found this one interesting in relation to the Bucs.
Over at ESPN, that outfit did a 2021 redraft and Bucs beat writer Jenna Laine suggested she would have drafted … the same guy the Bucs drafted in the draft to begin with, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.
The Bucs were wise to grab Tryon-Shoyinka despite having starter Jason Pierre-Paul, now 33, under contract through 2021. They needed to be thinking about the future, and Pierre-Paul wound up missing five regular-season games in 2021 while dealing with a torn rotator cuff. Tryon-Shoyinka was able to step into a rotation and have success without the expectations that come from starting every week, and he showed tremendous growth, registering 4.0 sacks, five tackles for loss, 10 QB hits and three passes defensed during the regular season, with his best game coming in a Week 4 nail-biter at New England, where he had two sacks and four QB hits.
Joe is not going to harp much on a rookie who took a year off football for The Sickness (though it didn’t seem to hurt guys like Micah Parsons). You could argue JTS hit the rookie wall. OK.
But JTS vanished when the Bucs needed him the most, in the playoffs. He had one tackle (a tackle for loss) in 48 snaps in the postseason.
And it does concern Joe a little that JTS’s best game came in Week 4. Did he really peak in October? Or did defenses pay more attention to him and as a result, he didn’t know how to handle the extra blockers?
There was a lot of internal hype from the Bucs about JTS in training camp — both from coaches and players. With Jason Pierre-Paul likely gone — with the Bucs needing to count nickels — JTS is the man right now. He has all offseason to rest and hit the videos to find out what he needs to improve.

The first round pick had to be either an OLB or DE, a player capable of taking over from JPP or Suh. We all knew that was a given.
The guy the Bucs missed out on was Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, the fine OLB who inexplicably dropped like a rock, completely out of the first and into the mid-second round. I think teams (including the Bucs) gave pause to his weight, in that they were afraid that he’d have trouble shedding blocks. However, he’s very quick and agile; shedding blocks hasn’t been a big problem for him. In any redraft he’d definitely shoot up into somewhere in the middle of the first round.

My take is that Jenna is like many team-beat reporters: she doesn’t want to criticize the team as she wants to encourage team personnel to give her tidbits. A team will cut a reporter off if the reporter poisons the relationship, and that means the reporter’s next piece will be their resume. A redraft is suggestive of criticism, Jenna wasn’t going to open Pandora’s Box.

JTS isn’t going to be a starter that will effectively replace JPP. Lacks football moves. I don’t think there is anything in the offseason that he can do to get to JPP’s level. Hope I’m wrong…..

Four sacks and 10 QBPs while only playing 50% of the defensive snaps is a pretty decent first year for our #32 pick… He didn’t play in 2020.
Plus he stayed relatively healthy all season.
Nowhere to go but up for JTS.

I’m guessing they looked at film on him from early in the season and figured out how to deal with him. Is there any news at all about JPP?

I think JTS is more comparable to Shaq than JPP. Shaq does one thing exceptionally well due to his speed/athleticism. JTS seems to fit that mold more. JPP is a freak athlete who could play on the interior or the ends…..standing up….even in coverage. To me he’s the one defensive player, if healthy, we need back….even if its on a year to year basis with incentives.

He’s raw and he needs to grow into his body a bit. Sky is the limit. Dude gotta put in the work though. A LOT will be written about this dude come training camp.

Outside of Micah Parsons edge rushers usually take a little bit of time to develop. Let him have a full offseason in an NFL program and let’s see what he brings next year. The guy is a genetic freak and showed flashes.

Could never figure out why folks waste their time talking ‘redrafts’. You are where you are; move on.
No way to know who’ll still be available when the Bucs pick Rnd 1 (pick 27), Rnd 2 (pick 60), Rnd 3 (pick 91), Rnd 4 (pick 130), Rnd 5 (pick 169), Rnd 7 (pick 247) & Rnd 7 (pick 259). Personally don’t pay much attention to Rnds 5-7 picks, although every once in awhile we hit on one. Rnd 4 is a crap-shoot IMO in terms of hitting on a starter or a key rotational player, but rarely in Year 1. But there’s no way we can afford to miss on our Rnds 1-3 picks (like we have so often in the past?), so the priorities for those picks have to be extremely well thought out.
My preference for those 3 Rounds, in no particular order, is: CB, DT and DE/OLB. Those are the 3 areas that we’re either most lacking in (CB) or where we’re oldest (DT & DE/OLB). And to get quality talent for those position groups that can potentially start, we have to draft high. Rnd 4 would be a good place IMO to grab a TE (we’re hurting there too). Then with the other 3 picks grab a WR, RB & OLineman and hope for the best.

Just think of our first round pick as a high second last year. we didn’t really have a first,and everything is fine with what we picked.our second was a high 3rd, our 3rd was a high 4th ,and so on.so basically,we didn’t have a first round pick last year… gonna be about the same this year.

There are occasionally guys that set fire in their first year at that position, but not many. I don’t think there’s any reason to think he won’t up his game significantly this year after a whole offseason to train, knowing the defense, and no doubt having the weaknesses in his game pointed out. Still reason to expect big things from him.

I think he did well enough, all things considered. He did hit the rookie wall and it was on top of the mountain of having sat out a year.
I don’t blame him for sitting, he made his decision at a rough time, before vaccines, and stuck with it.

Why do I keep hearing people talk about salary cap issues. The Saints have been dealing with salary cap for years. La Rams have been dealing with salary cap issues ever since the Goff deal. These guys that are juggling the cap are professional That just needs to find the right talent and not worry about the salary

joe-sho didn’t do much…
and we were sort of lucky that anthony nelson kind of made enough progress to show that he can be like a carl nassib for us next year
(like when nassib was thriving in his 2 years with the bucs)

You should NEVER EVER count on a rookie pass rusher, that’s just dumb, they rarely come through, in particular 2nd round picks. Maybe in the top 10 you might count on them all year, but even that is crazy if you go off history and how unproductive rookies are at that position.
But Tryon showed more than enough for me to think he’s going to be a good player in the long run.

If anyone watched film, you would know JTS was getting chipped by TE’s & RB’s. As well as getting double teamed when he was getting a lot of early wins against tackles. I can’t wait to see him progress next year in one spot. And not being moved all over the place

He has a lot of work to do. Still not enough technique, but he didn’t flash all-world super talent in the first place. A rotational. They need to keep going after more edge and pass rushers in this offseason.

I didn’t like the pick at the time period he plays with speed but I didn’t see a lot of strength, and he only had 2 sacks after week 4. Kind of reminded me Eric Curry, took himself so wide and out of the play.

He had a decent first year when you consider where he was drafted, and how much he played. Good prospect, should be better in 2022.

He should dye his hair blonde, would be more fitting for the way he plays.
