Now this is a wild suggestion.
No, Joe’s not a mock draft kinda guy. But Joe guesses maybe they are OK for sparking chatter.
Over at NFL.com, Lance Zierlein, who is a draftnik, a Houston-based sports radio personality and the son of a renowned football coach, posted a new mock draft and believes (well, this week he believes) that the Bucs will draft Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral at No. 27.
From a size and playing style perspective, Corral doesn’t fit the profile of QBs Bruce Arians has grown accustomed to coaching. However, that shouldn’t stop GM Jason Licht from making the pick if he believes the former Ole Miss star can be Tampa Bay’s long-term answer in the wake of Tom Brady’s retirement.
Would Joe be surprised if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht drafted a quarterback in the first round? Yeah. Should Licht? Joe won’t argue this but there are two reasons why Joe would be surprised if the Bucs pick a quarterback.
1) It tell Joe after watching 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask practice, the Bucs have serious reservations. Otherwise, why draft a quarterback in the first round?
2) This would suggest the Bucs are in more of a rebuild than a reload or a remodel. The Bucs have the firepower to make another deep playoff run so long as they have an experienced quarterback — unless you are telling Joe the Bucs are going to trade/sign a veteran quarterback and draft one.
Corral would be an interesting pick but why does Joe get the impression that Corral is a bit on the brittle side?
Aside from the Trask angle, would the Bucs draft Corral with the thought that Byron Leftwich will take over after Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians retires?

If the Bucs draft another QB I would step away from being emotionally invested in this team in any capacity. The Lost Decade was horrible. I’m not going to put myself through that again. I’d watch and root for the team of course, but I would be done with listening to any post-game discussion, listen to anyone breaking down losses, or listen to anyone talk about how the team should improve or what they should have done.

We enjoyed the Super Bowl with our All time defense and recently with Brady, a feat of magic how he turned them around. Now expect another 18 year cycle of sucking. This is miserable to even be holding these conversations. I for one feel sick. Short of Aaron Rogers or Russel Wilson, all is lost. Even with either of them it would be a tall task. I for one feel sick…I’m not ready for all the misery again…

Listed at 6′ 0″. That means he’s really 5’11”. Trask is a true 6’5-1/4″. Trask is as tall or taller than almost all NFL linemen. Taller than Brady. Taller than Rodgers. Same height as Ben Rothlisberger.

That would defeat the whole purpose of drafting Trask in the second round last year. Also I believe Licht said they didn’t like any of the QBs in this draft more than Trask. I say less than 5 percent chance they draft a QB.

I feel bad for Trask. Given the coaches at Tampa Bay and the irrational fan base (starting with Joe), for his sake maybe he should be traded to a team like Pittsburgh where he can step in for Rothlisberger. Kinda like the Falcons traded Favre to Green Bay after sitting him on the bench his rookie season. LMAO.

Hopefully the Bucs front office will be throwing shade all over the place.
Trask’s game has more promise of adapting to the NFL than any QB in this draft. If he hasn’t quite gotten there, send him to a QB whisperer.
The mechanics problem can be mended, the throwing motion adjusted, no big deal. He will still be accurate and able to make great throws.
There will still be an occasional duck (even Brady has those), and Trask might stare down a receiver sometimes, but that accuracy puts him higher on the list of NFL QBs than even Jameis.

He’s a tough kid and has a compact throwing motion. I hope that he does well under pressure from an NFL defensive line. Can he throw a simple slant pass? That’s such an underrated skill that has been so elusive for Bucs QBs over the years. Brady did it better than anybody.

Bottom line is , Brady plays next Year ,,, if he wants to live in Tampa it’s prob Tampa but the Coaches and Devin White ( yak Yak pollution) have got to commit to another level of focus ….. if not he will be traded ( as Brady knows he owes it to the organization , his cap hell) ; prob to the Browns, SanFran , Dolphins, Titans or a few others ……. Tampa Bay Gave Tom everything he wanted and now he’s going to leave them in Cap Hell ,,, Talk About tarnishing your carrer and reputation ……… Tom fully well understood his player / friends responsibilities when he resigned !! 1. Its been said over and over. This QB class stinks and its been stated had Trask stayed in school and had a similiar type year he would be considered QB1 in this class. So the Bucs would not draft a QB they have graded lower than Trask higher in the draft.
2. Corral may have some of the physical traits he has zero experience running pro style offense.
3. Wont happen in 1st round. If someone they like slips way down in to later rounds than sure you take that gamble. I think you should always take a QB every 2 years or so.

Rome, I hear where you’re coming from and reflexively might feel the same way initially. However as soon as the season rolls around I’ll be as invested as ever. Trust me, I know this based on vast experience.
Sonny J, a few of the pre-draft periodicals compared Trask to roethlisberger. With the exception of his arm which doesn’t seem to be quite as strong as young Ben’s. He also has great touch and good accuracy. I’m interested to see how he develops.

The only opinion on QB’s I care about is Jason Licht’s. BA is a short timer, I suspect BL is too. Bucs cant really afford a FA QB and keeping key players. Face it, SB window is closed.

@ Joe, I love the site, but I am sure from past experiences you know that you and I disagree on what the Bucs should do at QB (minus Tom Brady). In fact, I think the Bucs should do the exact opposite at QB than you would do. You also talk about all this talent. What talent if we lose all of our free agents?

Once the draft prospect analysis heats up in the upcoming weeks, you will see the stock of Matt Corral fall to the mid rounds. He is an unimpressive athlete with underwhelming passing performances. He was a baller at college level, but is a very poor man’s version of Baker Mayfield for the pro game and that does not bode well for any team that invests heavily in him.

None of these ABT (Anybody But Trask) articles are making any sense anymore. They’re just speculation run amok at best, and border on ridiculous & counterproductive at worst.
Kyle Trask was a 2nd Rnd pick and was the 6th QB taken at #64 (behind Trevor Lawrence – Jags starter #1; Zach Wilson – Jets starter #2; Trey Lance – soon to be 49ers starter #3; Justin Fields – Bears starter #11; Mac Jones – Pats starter #15). So what’s the problem here? Bucs had the LUXURY of letting Trask sit for a year to learn from the best QB of all-time (just like 49ers had the luxury of letting Lance sit behind Garappolo).
So now we get subjected to ridiculous, never-ending media hype about how Trask can’t be any good because he’s never taken an NFL snap? Huh? Lawrence, Wilson, Fields, Jones all got to start because their teams didn’t have any viable QB options. Bucs did; his name was Tom Brady.
We’ve got Trask under contract and can probably re-sign Gabbert (since he knows BA’s offense?). Pick up one other QB in the Lost-and-Found and let the 3 of them compete in Summer Camp (like Belicheck did with Jones, Hoyer & Newton?). May the best man win.
Now can we PLEEEASE write about something else? For starters, I suggest that MAYBE we could explore this very questionable notion that ‘The Bucs have the firepower to make another deep playoff run so long as they have an experienced quarterback ‘. MAYBE from the aspect of the large number of open holes we have in our starting lineup at present? AND maybe also from the aspect of how to fill those holes IF we also pay for an ‘experienced quarterback’ like Rodgers or Wilson to run our offense?

Since the GOAT retired, I’ve seen numerous commenters (likely Gator fans) on here shoot down the idea of Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray and Jimmy Garoppolo all in favor of Kyle bleeping Trask.

I get Joe that this is the season of speculation, and the Bucs have a LOT to speculate on. For instance …
o Our TEs. OJ is a FA, as is Gronk (who’ll very likely retire or sign with someone else). That leaves us with Cam Brate (overpaid at $7.3 mil) and Codey McElroy ($825K) as our TEs. I might be wrong, but I think that should be a concern.
o Our Center right now is … oh wait, he (Jensen) is a FA. He also happens to be THE leader of our OLine. I might be wrong, but I think that should Center is a concern.
o Our DLine has FOUR FAs who might not return: Suh, JPP, Gholston & McLendon. Numerous JBFers have commented in the past how crappy our Secondary was when the Front-7 didn’t kick-ass. Well, it appears that our Front-7 is MAYBE in for some big changes & probably won’t be kicking nearly as much ass in the future. I might be wrong, but I think that should be a concern.
Could go on speculating about the RB position group, the state of our WR group especially IF Godwin isn’t re-signed, our other OLine concerns, or could just focus on how badly our Secondary needs upgrading.
OR … we could just keep talking about how spending every shekel & draft pick we have to acquire Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson or Jimmy G will turn us into instant SB contenders. Ya, that’s fun too. No place close to reality, but fun nonetheless.

Godwin will get signed, if he wants to much, let him walk. With grayson, Scotty Miller, back paired Tyler Johnson and Evans… that’s still a hell of a WR squad.
If gronk comes back he will most likely play in tampa. Close to his buddies, family and businesses. Plus no state income tax.
Playoff lenny I’m going to guess will return too. Tampa went out on a limb giving him a chance when he was seen around the league as AB jr. There may not be a big free agent interest in him as other RB’s

Okay, so his delivery is really compact and quick, which helps. He is Case Keenum on an average day with fresh, though fragile looking legs. So maybe he could fight it out with Trask and let the best low expectation QB win. Problem is he is a completely different QB than Trask, and does not really fit BA and Leftwich. Remember before Brady came, Jameis in BA’s offense lit it up, but unfortunately too much for the opposition with those picks. I look at Trask and think potentially Jameis, with maybe 10 less picks. If that can happen, we are a 10 to 9 win team, because we still have a lot of good players. Ultimately, I would stay away from Corral if I were the Bucs. Pick a good corner or lineman. You always need them. Wait on a QB till there are actually some good ones to get. If you see any potential of greatness in Trask, let him play. Hopefully we hear good chatter about Trask in the next few months leading up to training camp. If that chatter is there, then I think they will give him a legit shot.

The QBs at the Senior Bowl—Pickett, Howell, Ridder, Strong— did not impress, but a lot of that was because the offensive line sucked. All the QBs were sacked or running for their lives. So it was not a great evaluation. For now, we’ll have to look at film, and wait for combine and workouts.
But the Bucs met with Kenny Pickett, arguably the most NFL-ready of the bunch. Joe Burrow-like in many ways. His “small hands” will drop him down into mid rd 1.
Matt Corral is a skinny 6-2 205. He’s got small/narrow mechanics, and arm strength similar to Garoppolo, which is just so-so. Not very good outside the pocket and (again Jittery G-like) not great under pressure.
Pickett is okay. If they manage to get him, have him duke it out in camp with Trask.

Trask was drafted in the second round,but that doesn’t mean he is going to start. We don’t know if he’s ready or if he will ever be ready. Maybe he’s just a backup. Maybe he’ll just be a trade chip in the future.

You say Trask mobility is limited, but there is actual video footage of him running a QB Power for a TD against Alabama.
In that same game Trask ran several designed QB runs that picked up critical 1st downs for the Gators.
Trask is No Lamar Jackson, but to say he doesn’t move well at all reveals a lack of football knowledge.
When you can run a designed QB Power play for a TD against Alabama, you can move well.

I’m refering to his pocket mobility and footwork which is a totally different thing than running in a straight line. Trask has very slow feet and is incredibly stiff. Its all on tape….but UF fans are too blinded by their allegiances

For example, Tom Brady is incredibly slow but has tremendous footwork and pocket mobility. Who cares if Trask can run a QB power against bama? He has cement feet in the pocket.

It’s all speculation, and Trask is a mixed bag. His college career can be interpreted any which way. The comments from the coaches are boiler plate optimistic and vague, “he’s learning”. Most importantly, his preseason performances were, well, a mixed bag. That’s where it will remain until we get more evidence.
