Tony Boselli Questions Whether Jaguars Offered Byron Leftwich A Job

Now this is especially interesting considering that iconic Jaguars left tackle Tony Boselli works for the Jaguars official website and is an active NFL broadcaster.
Collecting a check from a team doesn’t mean you have all the inside scoop, but it certainly means you have great sources, especially when you’re a franchise legend.
Boselli was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week talking about the new hire of Doug Pederson as Jags head coach.
But what about Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, who was said to have the job but refused to work with Jaguars GM Trent Baalke and wanted Jacksonville to hire a new personnel chief?
Boselli doesn’t think the Jags were ready to hire Leftwich.
“I wonder how close it was. Were they has close as all the reports?” Boselli said, adding that there was so much wild speculation about a pending Leftwich hire on social media. “…He was a serious candidate. I know that. And they took it very seriously and they were very intrigued with Byron.”
Boselli added that he’s a big Leftwich fan and is rooting for Lefwich but the Jags weren’t ready for a young coach with limited experience.
“I think just his experience had something to do with it,” Boselli said. “Nothing against Byron per se.”
At the end it came down to are you going with the Super Bowl-winning coach or the young guy newer to coaching,” Boselli said. Pederson won the 2017 Super Bowl season with the Eagles. He and Leftwich are former NFL quarterbacks.
On CBS Sports Radio, Bucco Bruce Arians friend and former Giants Pro Bowl running back Tiki Barber said he believes Leftwich is in a good place and was very wise to be picky with Jacksonville.
“The organization is committed to winning and committed to him. As a first-time head coach, the last thing you want to go to is an organization that’s in dysfunction and seems lost,” Barber said.

Off-topic question/observation: QB Coach Clyde C was on SiriusXm this morning for a lengthy discussion, mostly about Brady and how unique he was/is. I’d LOVE to see a write-up on this site about that discussion – it was awesome and Coach Clyde gave some details about Brady that are rarely heard, and he gave some insight into the mind-set and mentality of the Bucs this coming season! Will JBF be doing an article on his interview soon? (Like, ASAP?) Us fans all need to hear Clyde’s words because they were very encouraging for this season.

With the Rooney rule, you never really know if coaches are getting interviews because of it or if they are legit candidates……I guess the proof is in the hiring & that isn’t happening very often.
BL’s best shot at HC is to develop a QB like Trask & take over when BA leaves…..if he can do that, he’s set.
And, if there are draft picks being handed out for hiring a minority HC….then we should get them if wed promote BL or Bowles….

Hell NO! They were intrigued because they couldn’t understand a word he was saying during the interview. What makes this guy HC material? Is it because he worked under Brady? All I know is prior to Brady he was a losing coach. Add that to the other two losers the Bucs have the trifecta of disappointment. I know, I know go back a decade and BA won a few games.

Rooney rule is useless these owners are going to pick who they want as head coach or gm. Look at Eric Bienemy I don’t think he even got an interview. The league made an example of Jon Gruden but there is a lot worse things going on at the top. Maybe no Goodell is the main culprit.

I bet if Brady interviewed he would get the job immediately.
I also bet if BL could actually call a game and win he would get the job. We’ve all seen how TB plays BL’s playbook until he has to call his own and goes wide and starts picking teams apart. The Bucs won in spite of BL. i.e. he’s not qualified.
TB on the other hand should get another shot.

“Nothing against Byron.” That says it all. Byron Leftover is still OC here for a reason. You have to wonder whether TB12 was learning from him, or if it was the other way around. I was guessing our plays right on more than half of every snap, and I’m just a casual moron. Sorry but this situation is telling. BA should be taking this into account about who he really wants calling plays next year.

Do you mean that a Supreme Court that has had 115 selections…and only two blacks, and 5 women, the rest being White “Christian” males mostly English descent with some of we Irish mixed in. And of course there has never been an Atheist.
In the NFL there were 3 black HC’s at the time of the Rooney rule. Now there is ONE black coach out of 32!
I’m old enough to remember when I believed black guys couldn’t play QB. Of course Warren Moon and others showed MY ignorance. I don’t know about you guys but I like to LEARN from my MISTAKES. And so to all my black brothers I apologize for once being so incredibly ignorant.
70% of the players are black with 1 out of 32 as HC. The Rooney Rule has failed and I’m surely not smart enough to come up with a better solution.
I would bet the house on the proposition that out of those 70% there are some incredible head coaches.
Sadly there is a group of folks who simply hate even thinking about this problem. They view any solution as discrimation against we poor white snowflakes.

The Rooney Rule was enacted with the best of intentions. But now it’s just a kick in the nuts to all the black coaches who get multiple interviews for high level positions. Only to get turned down year after year. It seems every year a couple black coaches get interest from multiple teams. Only to be turned down. I understand these teams probably already have a favored coach lined up. But it can’t be easy for black coaches to have interview after interview and not get hired. This rule currently seems to have unintended consequences and may be making things worse. I don’t have the answer to fix it. But something needs to change.
As far as Byron Leftwich not getting hired for the Jaguars job. I don’t believe Byron was a Rooney rule interview. The Jaguars decided Byron’s experience in the league didn’t justify his demands. So honestly it wasn’t a good fit for Leftwich or the Jaguars. Byron’s demands were very smart. He obviously wanted to be responsible for his own decisions as a head coach. Not be hamstrung by an inept front office making poor choices that he would ultimately be held accountable for. I have a massive amount of respect for him. For making those demands and not backing down. He clearly wants to be successful in this league. I hope some other team looks at the way Leftwich handled himself during the interview process with the Jaguars. And they realize he is a savvy smart coach. Who isn’t going to take a bad job. Just so he can get a raise and promotion.

The guys at the local sports bar feel that Leftwich has a higher opinion of himself than is warranted.
It was only because of Brady that he was even being considered as a head coach prospect, and because he is black.

Yawn⌠the Jags made a decision that they thought was best and BL didnât make the cut. Personally I donât think he is near seasoned enough. A HC is so much more than Xâs and Oâs . BL only has a few years calling plays, and those plays are out of the game play put together under BAâs nod, and of those plays there is constant communication between the Bucs booth, BA and BL

Only 32 positions, in reality a handful per season. The Rooney rule us flawed but I believe in evolution and you will see more minority & women HC’s. It will happen, too many eyes are open now. I say fire BA and hire Flores if you want to continue winning. The guy I’d really love to see is Dan Campbell, he’s a real players coach.

Lefty overplayed his hand by demanding his own hand picked GM ( Adrian Wilson ) and now has to build his resumè off of Gabbert/Trask/Door # 3. Not a bet Iâd place. Not sure Lefty has the âCEOâ type mentality needed to be a successful NFL head coachâŚunless you put stock in his âMagic Johnson Smileâ as described by Raheem Morris in 2009.

Well I will say Pederson has more credentials than Byron. He is is a known good coach and outstanding person. If you have a SB win as a coach you are a rock star. That said we sure need more black head caches in this league. I hope it happens soon.

Coach Flores is a hero for exposing what most already know and what is true in the NFL and most professions in this Country. A Black has to twice as good as a white person to be chosen for any position of importance. He has to be twice as competent, twice as tolerant, twice as humbleâŚ. And despite that he will still be ladt hired and first fired. Meanwhile no nothings like Listnfrmafar feel empowered to criticize a man who has accomplished significantly more than he can even fathom simply because of his skin color. It is what it is, sports should be a simple meritocracy but like everything else thatâs more the exception than the rule.

I agree with Tampabucsfan, but if we’re playing wishes, kisses, and dreams… I’d like to see both coordinators go and a rebuild from BA down. If going all in again, then Flores come in as co-HC/DC; bruce take over play calling, like he implied, as co-HC/oc and get Wilson. Flores inherits team, after BAs inevitable farewell tour. Unfortunately, the Flores suit is going to bog him down…GO Trask!

If assuming BL gets an adequate quality QB in 2022 and is able to make the offence competitive and show some semblance of the Brady era of only slight. He should be a top hire next season. If the team retains weapons and a adequate QB and Tampa offence is weak then heâs likely not a HC candidate.

I personally think Tampa should invest in Cousins. Based on PFF, SISdata, his TD/INT, Yards, and other analytic sites Cousins was a very good QB last season. Placing 8th and 10th on PFF and SISdatahub. With Brady and Rodgers ahead of him in the NFC whom both may be retired or out of NFC. Only Stafford and Dak rank hire in NFC. He is valued at the level of a Murray or Wilson now for production in the NFC.
Basically to have the best QB in the NFC now you just need to be near the level of play of Matt Stafford, that is very possible for Cousins on Tampa.

The bar is relativity low with all the legends retiring on the coach and QB side in the NFC. A team like the 49ers could be a throw away from a SB with Jimmy G. You donât need that other level QB play anymore when you had to beat Brees Brady and Rodgers, A young Cam or Young Ryan. if all the other QBs are weak to only relatively good to be in a SB representing the NFC.
