Shaun King Names Three “Shown-Enough” Quarterbacks For Bucs
February 4th, 2022Bring on Mitch Trubisky!
That’s not something you hear much at your local Big Storm Brewery taproom as Bucs fans guzzle Bromosa or Wavemaker Amber Ale.
But if the 27-year-old former Bears quarterback landed on the Tampa Bay roster next season, one Bucs fan wouldn’t freak out. That’s Shaun King, one of four quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game.
King now works for VSiN after stints on various networks, and coaching quarterbacks and running backs for the University of South Florida.
Trubisky, 27, was a backup for the Buffalo Bills last season and is set to become a free agent.
He is one of three quarterbacks King puts in the “shown-enough” category to possibly be worth the Bucs signing to replace Tom Brady. It was King’s contention, on WDAE radio, that the Bucs might view Trubisky as a guy who could take a huge leap under the coaching of Bucco Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich.
It’s easy to make fun of Trubisky, but he does have experience and he’s not a turnover machine or a stiff like Mike Glennon.
In 2020, Trubisky was the Bears’ starter under a new coaching staff and was benched in Week 3. That tells Joe either Trubisky was dreadful or the new coaches never wanted him to be their guy.
Arians has said many times that he doesn’t like quarterback competitions — sort of if you have two QBs, then you don’t have one.
Joe would trust the Bucs if they went the Trubisky route. Arians certainly deserves the benefit of the doubt (though Joe might scream in private all spring and summer). One obvious upside to Trubisky is that he’d come very cheap after earning $2.5 million this season.
King’s other “shown-enough” quarterbacks are Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:37 pm
Brink him in as a Back up for Trask
February 4th, 2022 at 1:39 pm
I’d take Trubisky 64% completion, 2-1 td to int % over Gabbert 56% and 1-1 td to int.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:44 pm
Unwatchable
February 4th, 2022 at 1:46 pm
If you bring him in he’s here to compete with Trask. We all saw what happened with Winston when he had to compete for his job. He couldn’t handle it mentally.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:46 pm
Pass on Mayfield….too short and injury riddled. Too much bark….no bite.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:47 pm
Shaun King
One of two Bucs quarterbacks that lost an NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points
February 4th, 2022 at 1:48 pm
No, no,, and no, to all three.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:53 pm
Hopefully Licht & Arians has figured this out. They must have a plan of attack. I do love the Mayfield commercials though.
February 4th, 2022 at 1:55 pm
Gabbert, Trask and….Howell
February 4th, 2022 at 2:04 pm
I laughed Trubisky off when I first heard that suggestion….
Then I googled him…. His stats and win lose record aren’t horrible… His Bears days could be partly the coaching issue fault…
Most interesting, he is the only QB that has started in over 50+ games and never once threw a pick 6!
February 4th, 2022 at 2:05 pm
Other than JimmyG, why would we waste our time with those two stiffs? They just devalue the team, the players, and the fans. Trubinsky? Seriously. Might as well just re-sign Jameis….
February 4th, 2022 at 2:10 pm
Its confirm! Leftwhich is coming back not to coach but to play QB. Hes your bucs starting QB
February 4th, 2022 at 2:10 pm
What, no Tim Tebow?
February 4th, 2022 at 2:17 pm
In a book of bad ideas, this is Chapter 1.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:19 pm
It doesn’t matter who the QB is….the team will all show up 30lbs over weight with pot bellies.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:19 pm
ok teblow would just be like the wildest move ever after brady…lol
February 4th, 2022 at 2:21 pm
Only Watson gets me excited. The rest are not spectacular. But if I had my choice of “not so spectacular” it would be one that’s cheap, doesn’t require a draft pick, can be a mentor to Trask and has good knowledge of the system…winner Gabbert
February 4th, 2022 at 2:22 pm
baker isn’t gonna work because you never want anyone around you they call biff, chip or skip…
and baker falls in with those richie rich boys club names…
#BiffBakerChipAndSkippy
February 4th, 2022 at 2:23 pm
when nothing works, just bring fitzmagic back 🙂
February 4th, 2022 at 2:26 pm
I would bring in Trubisky or Lock. A hard no to everybody else. Both these QBs were mishandled by their teams, not played to their strengths, and had failed coaches who didn’t believe in them.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:29 pm
Trubisky would be fine to compete with Trask for the starting job…
Cheap, still young……FA…..no draft picks to give up….I’m OK with it.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:33 pm
Who? I had to look him up. Yep. Another first round bust.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:34 pm
This is a good idea, we need at least one new guy in the QB room in my opinion.
Trivially could easily do a lot better in Tampa than he did in Chicago. He was never a turnover machine like Winston, which is very difficult to fix as we all found out the hard way.
He just didn’t really have crazy elite playmaking talent or a great offensive line.
Gabbert, Trubisky, and Trask – put all of the other money and picks to building a team around one of these guys, and I think one of them may be good enough to keep us as a playoff team.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:37 pm
WalkdaPlank Says:
February 4th, 2022 at 1:47 pm
Shaun King
One of two Bucs quarterbacks that lost an NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points
Actually, the Bucs offense gave up a safety…..so the Rams defense was held to 9 points……same as LA Rams vs Williams in ’79
February 4th, 2022 at 2:38 pm
” One obvious upside to Trubisky is that he’d come very cheap after earning $2.5 million this season.”
Won’t come any cheaper than Kyle Trask who’s already under contract. No way! Either bring in someone who has taken a team to the playoffs before or just go with Trask.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:38 pm
Another worthless opinion from a has-been. Shaun King was an interception machine in his brief NFL career (27 TD – 24 INT).
February 4th, 2022 at 2:42 pm
no way do the glazers let trubisky, gabbert, trask, etc. lead this team into half a season’s worth of primetime games and games of the week…
it’s gotta be a guy who at least warrants a nickname…
someone with at least slight hoopla
February 4th, 2022 at 2:43 pm
This may be the most depressing joebucsfan article ever.
February 4th, 2022 at 2:45 pm
i don’t think a guy nicknamed “twitch blowfitzky” should be quarterbacking the squad…
sorry
February 4th, 2022 at 2:48 pm
TBBF
Good point, I will be sure to make the correction in future Shaun King articles
February 4th, 2022 at 2:51 pm
Why not bring in Trubisky, Mariotta or another free agent to “COMPETE” with Trask and let the best man start
February 4th, 2022 at 3:00 pm
Play Trask first, while the Brady lessons are fresh, don’t show him someone with the bad habits of a Trubisky.
All the Bucs can afford is someone like Trubisky, or Bortles. Neither have as much upside as Trask might. There is one way, now, that we can know what Trask is or might be.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:00 pm
Now this is the Yucks I know!
February 4th, 2022 at 3:04 pm
Uh.. NO! I can’t believe Tribisky’s name was even mentioned…Get one of these: Jimmy G, Carr, Wentz, Rodgers, Watson, Wilson
February 4th, 2022 at 3:05 pm
the best one is deshaun watson…
the only problem is he has become the r. kelly of the nfl…sort of…
you can bring that to the table after tommy terrific…
it would have been ideal if jameis would have just stayed and sat behind the goat for a couple years…
rather than be the understudy to brees…
2 years behind tom, then back into the fire would have not been bad…
but no one knew how it would play out or exact timelines…
heck, with jameis sitting behind him, tommy might have remained competitive and not wanted to give up the spot for like 5 years…
who knows…
but at this point it’s hard for all parties for jameis to come back home…
and on a very serious note, the stadium was becoming a total ghost town with jameis at the helm…
maybe fitzmagic for a year plug in, as this gets figured out
February 4th, 2022 at 3:06 pm
I would like the team to keep Lenny, and feature the run a bit more. A journeyman QB that can manage the game can win games. BA is likely looking for a veteran gunslinger to get the ball down field. A healthy mix of the two is the most probable outcome. Manage the turnovers better than Jameis, and try to take advantage of mismatches that Brady did. That QB will have the personnel, coaching, and opportunity to make this happen. You can almost make the argument for any signal caller not named Trask or Gabbert.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:08 pm
Bucs will draft either Pickett or Willis in 1st rd.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:09 pm
dang typo:
you ***CANT*** bring that to the table after tommy terrific…
February 4th, 2022 at 3:13 pm
I don’t think the Bucs want a QB controversy or QB competition. Either they mortgage the future and acquire a big name like Wilson or Jimmy G, or they roll with Trask and bring in a backup FA like Flacco, Dalton, or dare I say Fitzmagic.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:16 pm
Get Rodgers after you resign all you free agent key
February 4th, 2022 at 3:18 pm
GET AARON RODGERS!!!!!! YAAAAA GET AARON RODGERS..
February 4th, 2022 at 3:18 pm
Mariota would be another good FA QB competitor for Trask……
Knowing BA….it will be Gabbert. Like it or not.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:24 pm
What QB is out there that’s already won a Super Bowl? Nick Foles.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:27 pm
Adam from NY
baker isn’t gonna work because you never want anyone around you they call biff, chip or skip…
I resent this post. Since you are from the Empire State, I hope you are freeing your nards off, whining about your state income tax. lol
p.s. Giants and Jets are still available
February 4th, 2022 at 3:31 pm
biff you’re the exception because you’re a fellow bucs fan 🙂

February 4th, 2022 at 3:32 pm
Jimmy GQ. 😉
February 4th, 2022 at 3:33 pm
Someone fill Shaun’s head up with helium? That noggin is gigantic!
February 4th, 2022 at 3:48 pm
No!
Just draft Sam Howell and let him and Trask give the offense some much needed creativity. Play both and pick up that bama RB Brian Robinson Jr.
We will RUN our way to another SB!….(with a few zingers here and there)
February 4th, 2022 at 3:52 pm
I cringed when I read Trubisky but after thinking about it, I realized I don’t want Gabbert at all so I would be ok with Trubisky.
February 4th, 2022 at 3:53 pm
Craig
If Brady lessons meant anything then Matt Vessel, Brian Hoyer and Jacoby Brissett wouldnt all be medicore. You can’t teach what Tom Brady does, you eitger have it or you dont
February 4th, 2022 at 3:54 pm
Cassel
February 4th, 2022 at 4:04 pm
I’m glad King didn’t list himself
February 4th, 2022 at 4:05 pm
I mentioned Trubisky a couple days ago….as did a few other guys.
Again…. the guy has talent, but has been rather undeveloped in an NFL cesspool organization. Let Arians and Moore get their hands on him.
February 4th, 2022 at 4:05 pm
Joe Blaine Gabbert has also won a Super Bowl! And Ryan Griffin!
February 4th, 2022 at 4:06 pm
MadMax: I saw Sam Howell described as “a poor man’s Baker Mayfield”. That’s less than ideal, if true.
February 4th, 2022 at 4:10 pm
roll with kyle Trask and beef up the d
February 4th, 2022 at 4:18 pm
Mitch would definitely an upgrade on Gabbert. He did make the pro bowl in 2018. Might as well kick the tires see whats left.
February 4th, 2022 at 4:20 pm
Yes, I also mentioned trubisky a few days ago. Stats better than you’d think. Low cost. Experience. Youth. Potentially moldable. I think I used the analogy of Jim plunkett who was a first round draft pick who didn’t do much until he landed with the raiders later in his career. You never know.
February 4th, 2022 at 4:43 pm
Thanks Tye, good info on Trubisky.
I have no preconceived notions yet. I am still doing my own homework. I have ruled out Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson at this time for various reasons because of my preliminary research. The odds appear long against them, though I DO have much faith in Jason Licht. Trubisky might be a realistic option for us.
February 4th, 2022 at 4:50 pm
Trubisky? WTF? Are these people smoking something? They’d be better off with Blaine Gabbert(seriously).
February 4th, 2022 at 5:07 pm
Trubiscuit huh. The discussion’s going there now? Say, I have another great idea. And it solves doubts about whether Byron Leftovee being more than just a middling OC. Have him unretire and be our next QB. It’s the best of both worlds. Problem solved.
February 4th, 2022 at 5:24 pm
Bucco iz gonna go with Gabbert. His fave. Trask as bacup.
February 4th, 2022 at 5:24 pm
Im with Joe on this. You gotta give Bruce the benefit of the doubt.
Just think how many people thought Carson Palmer was a nobody. He was a basic bust run off of a few teams.
We very likely could see the same thing here. Dont care if its Trubisky, Gabbert, Trask. Whoever. If Bruce knows one thing its the QB position. Let the man find his guy and enjoy the ride!
GO BUCS!!!!
February 4th, 2022 at 5:39 pm
I have ptsd from shaun king
February 4th, 2022 at 5:56 pm
Being an ex Bears fan ..gave up about 12 years ago, MT had a good year when he had receivers. Not so much when he didn’t. The BUCS have receivers if they can get Godwin and Gronk back. Worth a look.
February 4th, 2022 at 5:57 pm
Of course I’d prefer Russell Wilson..if he becomes an available!!!
February 4th, 2022 at 6:21 pm
Garappolo?
To quote the now retired GOAT, “that f***** guy???”
February 4th, 2022 at 6:30 pm
I live in Chicago and have seen my share of Bears football… listened to more than my share of Bears sports radio.
You don’t want Trubitsky.
February 4th, 2022 at 7:20 pm
I agree on your Trubisky take, Rob F. The joke was that the Bears were in a “Prevent Offense” that prevented them from scoring points.
February 4th, 2022 at 7:31 pm
He did score a TD against HOU last year.. so he is somewhat mobile… heh heh heh.. No way..
February 4th, 2022 at 8:39 pm
Shaun King is an idiot period
February 4th, 2022 at 8:52 pm
No thanks on trubinsky. Unless the Bucs are going for the #1 draft pick in 2023. Then that makes since.
February 4th, 2022 at 8:53 pm
Too bad King is lazy and cared more about everything else than football. If the idiot had worked as hard as Brady’s left pinky, he might still be playing quarterback for the Bucs. I dismiss anything Burger King says on princple. Unless maybe it were a recommendatino for a restaurant with a high fat, high colesterol offering.
February 4th, 2022 at 9:10 pm
Has anyone actually watched Trubisky over the years? Yeah the Bears were not over all bad with him, they went to the playoffs a few. But any Bears fan and others who watched any Bears games with Trubisky playing QB, then you saw just plain bad offensive football. Trubiskys first year, the Bears had a defense that would rival some great defenses over the years, and Trubisky lost the “double doink” home playoff game against the Eagles. The Bear Defense “that year” was easily one of the best defenses in the last decade, led by the newly aquired Monster Kalil Mack. Mack was in monster mode that season. And Trubisky still could not win that playoff game at home. He has never looked like he is very confident. He can run well, but as a QB, it is about THROWING the ball, and Trubisky just has never shown to be consistently competent at that. Trubisky benefitted from a very talented Bears team over his time in Chi town, but he actually pulled them down. If the Bears had a decent QB with that defense the Bears had, they would have hoisted their 2nd Lombardi Trophy.
Just a side note, go back and watch the Bears and GreenBay on game to start the 100th season.
Mack had one of the most dominating games I have ever seen by a defensive player. Rodgers still pulled it out of his booty, with his “Willis Reed” moment.
But just Mack going full on Monster Mode is awesome to see.
GO BUCS!!!!!!
February 4th, 2022 at 9:23 pm
okay after this i’m not listening to shaun kang any more…
and does he really have an affinity for burger king?
those whoppers are addictive because they sprinkle that magic dust on the patties when being made at the factory
February 4th, 2022 at 10:17 pm
Grab Colt McCoy from the Cardinals. I believe he’s also a FA and looked pretty good this past season while filling in for an injured Kyler Murray… Name calling in 3, 2, 1… Go!
February 4th, 2022 at 10:48 pm
August, good insights on Trubisky there. The question is, did he improve at all in Buffalo, getting some coaching from Brian Daboll? Trubisky would be one of many so-so options, a pretty quiet bridge to some future QB, Trask or maybe a rookie.
In other words, open camp. I’d prefer going after Pickett or Corral in the draft, if Trask doesn’t get the nod.
February 4th, 2022 at 10:55 pm
I would take him over Mayfield and possibly Jimmy G. Jimmy G and Mayfield are both liabilities. They both have good receivers, good running game, great defense… The only thing holding those teams back is their quarterback play.
Mayfield is a definite no. Jimmy G might be an option. Trubisky was decent when he could stand upright. When he played there the Bears offensive line was horrible and management was under pressure to get Fields in the game.
I’ve been pining for Deshaun Watson but just saw that his cap hit the next 2 years is 40 million per.
No thank you.
They need a quarterback and I don’t know if there’s one out there that can get it done
February 5th, 2022 at 12:46 am
Shawn King has been at those Big Macs again.
February 5th, 2022 at 5:09 am
First we need to get over “replacing” Tom Brady. That’s not happening and it doesn’t need to happen.
We need to replace Brad Johnson! That IS possible. Find a smart, accurate, QB who can keep the offense respectable enough to let a great defense do the real work of winning.
I can’t believe I’m going all D.R. here. LOL But thems the cards we’ve been dealt. Game changing QB’s like Brady or Mahomes..Burrows..or Josh Allen are simply rare. That’s why they are great.
So since we’re not going to find a “great” QB for next year let’s simply replace Brad Johnson….or another SB winning QB..Trent Dilfer.
The WORST type of QB IMO is the “Fameis Jameis” type who believe they are great but don’t have all the requirements for greatness. Did Fameis ever make anybody great? Did ME13 and CG make JW look better? JW had a cannon for an arm and while very slow could actually run efffectively. But he couldn’t even manage himself much less an offense. Check the sheets.
February 5th, 2022 at 6:15 am
Next year is gonna be a big drop off regardless.
February 5th, 2022 at 7:47 am
Think I will quit reading this or listening to local sports radio until they quit calling for the return of Jameis
February 5th, 2022 at 10:27 am
Bobby M. Says:
February 4th, 2022 at 1:46 pm
Pass on Mayfield….
I don’t know about that. If we could get Mayfield on a Winston to the Saints type of deal, that’d certainly be worth kicking the tires.
February 5th, 2022 at 11:11 am
My bear fan friends just can’t figure out that every player is lesser of a player in their organization. AR told them he owned them, and they rolled over and asked for another helping. You think Sapp, Brooks and Barber would have let that pass? Talk about a lousy culture. The Bears are doomed.
February 5th, 2022 at 11:49 am
Hell no!!!! Get rogers or wilson or jimmy g period
February 5th, 2022 at 12:23 pm
Those dudes have shown enough for me to say No Thanks.
February 5th, 2022 at 2:24 pm
Hey King, stop eating the breaded and deep fried lard.
February 5th, 2022 at 2:47 pm
Start with Kyle Trask look what he did against LSU and Alabama throwing touchdowns
February 5th, 2022 at 7:50 pm
trade for wilson or Watson please
February 6th, 2022 at 8:44 am
Touristy wouldn’t move the needle. Even if he won 10 games. Bucs need some juice at QB
