If You Want The Bucs To Draft A Quarterback…
January 31st, 2022Joe has seen a lot of comments about what the Bucs should do at quarterback for 2022, provided Tom Brady retires.
The core of this Bucs team is strong. And even if a starter or two is lost to free agency, it doesn’t mean a few holes cannot be plugged. The Bucs can make another run. Heck, two years ago the Bengals only won two games and now they are in the Super Bowl.
But, yeah, that’s because they have a quarterback. On the flip side, the Rams did not have Matt Stafford last year and they were a playoff team. But they found a quarterback and look where they are.
(By the way, after watching the past two wins by the Rams, any defensive coach deciding to blitz Matt Stafford in the fourth quarter of a close game should be forced to watch Lovie Smith-coached Bucs teams in a locked closet for two weeks straight. Why do otherwise smart coaches either ignore the obvious or try to outsmart themselves?)
Joe has read some folks think the Bucs should just draft and develop a quarterback, apparently forgetting that’s why they drafted Kyle Trask. OK, Joe will play along here.
Quarterbacks are slim pickings in the draft this year. Maybe the best is Kenny Pickett of Pitt, but he’s not Joe Burrow. He won’t go No. 1 and may not go in the top-five.
Helmethair Mel Kiper of BSPN has Pickett currently going No. 16 overall. So that tells Joe he will go in the top-10. Why? Because teams are desperate for quarterbacks, that’s why, and they will always overpay. If a team hits on overpaying a quarterback, the upside is limitless and far outweighs the gamble.
Personally, Joe would make a call to Mark Davis and the Raiders. Who knows if their next coach (Josh McDaniels?) even wants Derek Carr, who is entering the final year of his contract.
Puh-leeze, don’t get Joe started on Teddy Bridgewater.

I agree the Bucs will need a QB…the following year after TB12 retires. If I am wrong then I suggest trying Trask. There isn’t a lot of cap room and we still need some players. Give him a strong O-line and see how he does.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:08 am
I say sign a former Buc…the one…the only Josh Johnson. Only half kidding of course. This really does suck…a two year teaser just wasn’t long enough. Thankful for the Super Bowl win, however.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:09 am
Licht isn’t drafting a qb because he’s a super bowl winning GM and drafted one last year. Glad Licht is building the team and not the droplets who twaddle their inanity here.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:10 am
Drafting an unknown when you just drafted one last season in the 2nd round is a horrible investment…
Trask did face some top defenses last year of college and excelled… He put up some good stats against Alabama top defense… The Bucs are said to have several great qb position coaches so they should be able to tweak his ability to at least have a chance…
The Carr possibility is exciting but likely costly…
Bridgewater being fragile would not likely play all Season…
The Winston idea is a joke and they need their head examined!
January 31st, 2022 at 12:12 am
1. I am still in denial think Brady comes back for one more year
2. They drafted Kyle Trask to groom and try to start …. so sign Godwin and Jensen and Fournette, get the pass rush humming and give him a chance.
3. Or Russell Wilson.
I don’t want to hear about Aaron Rodgers just because I can’t stand the guy. He’s an arrogant horrible leader.
Teddy Bridgewater 😂 Hell no. I would rather start Trask, ready or not.
Tannehill, no thank you.
Carr? maybe, I’ve been on the fence with him for years
January 31st, 2022 at 12:28 am
He’s gone, he’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
He’s gone, he’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I’d pay the devil to replace him
He’s gone, and he’s gone
Oh why, what went wrong?
January 31st, 2022 at 12:35 am
trade for Rodgers or Deshaun watson, hell even russell wilson. if not just tank for the future number 1 pick in 23. This saddens me after a magical two years.
And by all means if Brady is done the bucs better not try and pull money back from Brady after all he has done. It will curse our franchise forever if they get cheap. Hell let him keep his money he may decide in september he wants to play again
January 31st, 2022 at 12:48 am
Hopefully Licht will grab a qb to compete with Trask within the first three rounds. The more bullets that we fire at the position via the draft, the better. Keep shooting at least once a year and maybe we get lucky…
Carr makes no sense to me unless we get him dirt cheap from the Raiders. Like 4th round pick cheap which ain’t happening. Carr is also in the last year of his contract and probably deserves to make at least as much or more than Garoppolo and Cousins. To me, Carr is not a true difference maker like Brady was/is, Patrick, cry baby cheese head, and Wilson are. Let teams like Dallas be stupid and grossly overpay for their above average qb’s.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:51 am
Qb class this year is hot garbage, we’d be better off with trask
January 31st, 2022 at 12:58 am
Possible Brady retirement:
-No reason not to give the second year,,second round Trask get a chance after practicing and playing with Brady before these stinky garbage QB list we would have to pay more.
-No clue about coaching 2022 (?)
-No clue about FA, trades, and salary cap (?)
-Licht usually comes up with 2-3 draft picks that will eventually develop over time if not right out the gate. He builds through the draft and a number of picks could come the Bucs direction.
January 31st, 2022 at 1:06 am
I don’t think Trask is the answer. There’s got to be a QB in this draft that they like and think could be coached up. Unfortunately, we’re going to need the picks to get DL, CB, RB. TE, WR, and OLB.
We”ll be lucky to go 8-8 this year. Too many holes to fill.
January 31st, 2022 at 1:13 am
Why would the Bucs draft a QB? We just saw how it’s done. Build a good offensive line, have 3 star WRs, then get a proven winning QB. Why would we go backwards to spending 5-years trying to guess if you got the right guy or not?
January 31st, 2022 at 1:20 am
Rod Munch Says:
January 31st, 2022 at 1:13 am
Oh yeah, that was easy, just spend a gazillion dollars to get a proven winning QB. Just like that, right?
We were lucky that Brady wanted to come here and very lucky he took a below-market salary. That kinda thing isn’t easy and it’s often cap-busting and doesn’t usually work out as well as you hope.
We won’t be able to afford anybody else if we have to pick up a giant salary like Wilson or Rodgers.
January 31st, 2022 at 1:30 am
sasquatch — Proven QB = aging veteran who other teams think is washed up.
That’s not a gazillion dollars.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:10 am
If Brady retired, no reason not to give Trask a chance compared to any of those other chump QB that would cost more. Resign Whitehead andDavis and maybe Suh to a one year deal maybe. DE, CB, OL, DT, TE, WR, OL.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:11 am
One simple reason to go with Trask is salary cap. He is already built into it. If you bring in Carr or Bridgewater or anybody else from another team, then the cap hit is going to be unreal. Don’t compound the loss of TB and Gronk by overpaying out of desperation.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:29 am
It’s an ugly offseason in QB for both draft and free agency. If Brady wanted to play two more seasons, he could make a strong case that he is the only QB who could keep TB competitive in that that window.
Kenny Pickett is the best draft prospect in a bad class. Trask is better than all of them. The FA list looks horrific. No good ones at all. If no Brady, make the overture to Russell Wilson, the only surefire winner. Or just go with Trask for a season, with low expectations.
I want the Bucs to land an edge rusher like Logan Hall in rd 2-3.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:32 am
Ironically, the Rams did to the 49ers what the Bucs did to the Rams. Only the Rams don’t have Todd Bowles. And the 49ers have Jittery G, who always manages to flip basketball passes to opposing players when panicked.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:42 am
Did you guys notice how the Rams comeback began with the officials’ phantom unsportsmanlike conduct call on the 49ers on a critical down? This is the second week now that the Rams received gifts. LA Super Bowl indeed.
January 31st, 2022 at 2:54 am
No. Draft Beef! Lotta Beef.
January 31st, 2022 at 4:00 am
Right steele!
January 31st, 2022 at 4:25 am
Corral of ole miss. Best one in draft
January 31st, 2022 at 4:36 am
For the slogan lovers: “Save The Licht House”
January 31st, 2022 at 4:45 am
Why than did they draft Trask if they had no plans for him? Just to throw money away ? My grandmother could use it, if they have no plans for her. Where does she need to apply at? B.A. loves Blaine Gabbert, that scares me
January 31st, 2022 at 5:46 am
you have to give Trask a shot ! he had better #’s than Burrow in 2019 why don’t y’all want to give the kid a shot? very strange if you ask me? if he would have come out this year he would be the first Qb drafted….
January 31st, 2022 at 5:47 am
I would feel a lot better about Trask if we saw him get some reps in real-time this season. That said, they didn’t draft him in the 2nd round to ride the pine.
LOTS of unknowns.
January 31st, 2022 at 6:04 am
they did it to learn from Brady and he did that all year…
January 31st, 2022 at 6:15 am
Having two young QB’s worked in Washington, where RG3 got badly injured and
Cousins was available. One thing that needs to happen, IMO is DS76 needs some special coaching to change his pass blocking technique against speed rushers.
There’s some mean and nasty defensive teams in the NFC, and he needs to
use his his bulk and strength to beat these rushers and give our passing offense
a chance.
January 31st, 2022 at 6:18 am
I never buy the narrative about which quarterback classes are weak or strong. The whole league slept on Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. Darnold was a safe pick. Narratives are busted all the time.
January 31st, 2022 at 6:20 am
Watson, Wilson or Trask … employ a scary defense & we’re good …Tom retiring ohhhh well he wasn’t ours anyways thanks for it all… bt at some point we have to breed our own qb . As a buc fan I’m still chasing that feeling
GoBucs!
January 31st, 2022 at 6:40 am
Russell Wilson is our guy. Can make all the throws, championship pedigree, excellent deep ball passer, good character, strong arm, high football IQ
January 31st, 2022 at 7:08 am
@Buc92’ …..exactly! Defense, Defense, Defense..a Bucs tradition…should be the focus, keeps a team in the hunt, ALWAYS! The South division is there to be owned, Bucs should be #1 for some time if they don’t . By far the most talented team, without Tommy and
January 31st, 2022 at 7:13 am
@Buc92….exactly!…focus on a dominate defense now, a Bucs Tradition. Will keep them in every game regardless of the QB…
January 31st, 2022 at 7:24 am
I’m appreciative of Brady for changing the culture, bringing the city a super bowl. But he’s a patriot, he was a rental. This is like a man being married for 20 yrs and had the opportunity to bang Jessica Alba for a while, but the person he loves is his wife. The bengals – who are more lowly than the Bucs have had a shot at a handful of real deal franchise quarterbacks. Carson Palmer, boomer, Joe Burrow. It sure would be nice if we, FOR ONCE, could have someone we could be excited about for the next 15yrs. And no, no one ever felt like that about Winston.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:28 am
There are no descent QBs in the draft and no descent QBs in the free agency. So you might as well give Trask a shot. Carr is a free agent after 2022 if he doesn’t resign with the raiders.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:30 am
Does anyone really think the Bucs will bring in Deshaun Watson with Darcie Glazer Kassewitz as an owner?…..not to mention the two female coaches and thousands of female ticket holders…
“America’s Quarterback “hassle” groping was one thing but Watson’s behavior is another.
And, yes….of course we should give Trask a chance……unless you can get your hands on Rodgers, Wilson or Carr without breaking the bank.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:30 am
Why draft a qb if we already drafted one last year that was not even tried yet? Some fans makes no sense. You don’t believe in trask, but you believe in someone that is just a bet too. This is laughable at best.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:34 am
Western Buc
Your best example would have been Brady a 6 th round pick . I am not sure about about the
league sleeping on Josh Allen who was the seventh pick. Agree on Mahomes playmaking and decision making shone, but in playoffs games against both the
Bucs and Rams too much scrambling and taking big losses hurt his team’s chances.
That said I do think if you get somebody like Burrow that shows the ability
to be calm under pressure and make good decisions in a class it does elevate the draft class and it was a no brainer to draft him.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:34 am
I’m not sure we (or anyone) would choose to have a QB with the last name Pickett. It’s like a running back who’s last name is Fumble. 😊
January 31st, 2022 at 7:36 am
Sign a mid tier qb or draft a late round qb they really like and completely open up the QB1 spot. This shouldn’t be a re-build.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:39 am
The anti Trask crowd is out in full force. The guy as far as I know has never taken a snap in a regular or post season NFL game so therefore how do you all know so unequivocally that Trask sucks as an NFL QB? Hmmmm? He surely was not an awful QB in the SEC a few years ago. I say if TB12 does retire, let’s give Trask a freaking chance before tearing him down armchair GM’s.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:42 am
Don’t you all think the Bucs drafted Trask knowing they couldn’t do any better in this years draft? It’s been no secret Tom is 44, and could retire anytime. Bucs knew it best, and even with a SB roster decided to use their 2nd round pick on Trask last year. Why, because they knew there were good QB’s in last years draft, and next to zero this year. If you don’t want to roll with Trask, and rather see the Bucs bring a vet in fine, but you won’t find one in this years draft who’s light years better than Trask. Truth be told, he’d be the first QB taken this year based off his last year of college tape, and production.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:43 am
Speaking of Burrow, this looks like a really good matchup of QB’s in the super bowl. The young QB who has helped turn his team around against a veteran QB
who has the opportunity to show on the big stage just how good he can be.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:55 am
Tank this season because there are some good QB in the 2023 class. They won’t have to try snd because their schedule this year is brutal. LKeep the picks, take your lumps and hope you draft the next superstar.
January 31st, 2022 at 8:09 am
People are looking at trades that I don’t think have a chance because it’s the only options for these teams and they are not going in with no QB. If it’s not Bridgwater it will most likely just be Blaine and Trask the rest is pretty much wishful thinking.
January 31st, 2022 at 8:38 am
Think a second guys… if we have such great QB coaches…. Moore, Arians, and such, why would we necessarily have to hire a guy right out of college? Sure, we have one of those. But don’t think there aren’t some very talented young guys languishing on bad teams with poor coaching this very minute,… just like we were not too many years back. Trade for one of these guys, let him compete with Trask and maybe one other vet, and develop one of those young guys into the franchise QB of the future?
January 31st, 2022 at 8:44 am
All of this talk about tanking makes me pissed off. Fans of the Bucs that have been around for 40+ years do not want to go back to a season where we are not competitive. I enjoy every game, every season. And we are not in a rebuild either. We have lineman going to the pro bowl, excellent WR’s, we may resign our RB and have pass rushers.
January 31st, 2022 at 8:51 am
Bridgewater is a good barometer for gauging Trask as a starter. If he can truly “beat out” Bridgewater for the job, then you probably got yourself a top 15-20 QB in only his 2nd year…similar to Mac Jones and Cam Newton. Ideally, you want a young QB to start as they are significantly cheaper and much easier to build a contender with. Once these young QBs cash in, the dynamics of the roster change significantly. Wentz in Philly was probably the best example…on a rookie deal you could surround him with a solid defense and run game. Once he got that big contract, the wheels started to wobble for the Eagles. Cousins is another….never produced remotely close to what he was paid.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:01 am
@ usedtostarting
I agree. The people asking for Wilson, Rodgers, Carr or even Bridgewater are not paying attention.
We will have to trade away our entire draft for Wilson, Carr or Rodgers and maybe more.
Plus – we just do not have the salary cap dollars to pay Wilson, Rodgers or Carr.
We have @ $20 million to spend on our draft and about 24 free agents – including several very expensive FAs like Godwin, Jenson, C. Davis and Whitehead.
Go study the salary cap guys and look at our free agent list. Then you will come back to earth…
January 31st, 2022 at 9:01 am
Why the need to draft a QB? Didn’t Licht use a second round pick on Trask? You don’t select a QB that high unless you think he’ll develop into a starter.
Honestly, to me it was a wasted pick. I need to spend some time on Picket tape.
As I’ve said before, Burrow (not Mahomes) is the best young QB in this league. He’ll prove it if Cinci can keep him upright, as their O Line stinks.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:03 am
If Brady retires and we are unable to get Rodgers or a sound vet I would think they will role with Trask if he is ready. Only Bruce Arians and the staff can determine that. I am confident they will make the right choice there is ZERO chance Bruce Arians is doing a rebuild at his age. He is looking to win now as he does not have much time left in this league.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:20 am
Anyone who dismisses Trask out of hand does not understand football. It is I’m[possible to judge whether he can be an effective NFL QB or not.
Many opine that all rook QBs should sit for a season or two and learn the game. Who better to observe than under the GOAT?
Before hitting the panic button and sifting through the current crop of college QB’s, the kid deserves a chance.
I saw nothing in pre-season action last year to label the kid anything but “upside.”
While options like Carr, Wilson, and Watson (please, no) are intriguing, the team has kicked the cap down the road enough as it is. Why not see what Trask has for a season, and settle the cap situation down more?
January 31st, 2022 at 9:23 am
I’m not a big Bridgewater fan, but the Bucs don’t have the draft capital and cap space for a big name this season to get one of the big names.
I’d be OK for a Teddy “Bridge”Water competing with Trask for a year to see what the team has in Trask.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:35 am
I’d be OK with that Cobra…but also look for a high pick QB a couple years ago on a bad team that has been undercoached, that we could get for a second or third rounder. And hopefully put a year unto the guy with Moore and Arians coaching, to give some more options in the future.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:22 am
Quarterbacks are slim pickings in the draft this year. Maybe the best is Kenny Pickett of Pitt, but he’s not Joe Burrow. He won’t go No. 1 and may not go in the top-five.
I think it’s a bit early to make that claim. As we all know, these QBs get hyped like crazy for the draft, and if he is the best one, he’ll get talked up a lot between now and the draft.
Teams at the top of the draft (as we all know) are there because they make bad decisions.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:15 am
Irrational thinking… we have a coach who is the “QB Whisperer” and we just drafted one last year… maybe just maybe he’s developing as he should be?
January 31st, 2022 at 11:49 am
Trask!! Far better and played in stronger conference
January 31st, 2022 at 11:59 am
Carr isn’t going anywhere. McDaniels likes him.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:03 pm
I see a dark horse to compete with Kyle Trask next year that will not cost much at all. Mitch Trubisky who I am more and more convinced looked bad because of Matt Nagy’s play calling.
January 31st, 2022 at 6:53 pm
“The whole league slept on Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes”
Allen was the 7th pick. Mahomes was the 10th pick. The whole league didn’t sleep on them.
