New Bucs quarterback?
There would be several winners and losers with the knowledge that Bucs quarterback Tom Brady played his final game in the NFL, barring a stunning announcement.
(Wouldn’t it be cool if Brady, so PO’ed over people in his inner circle leaking he would retire, says, eff it, and tells his wife, “Get the pirate beads out, honey, I’m playing for the Bucs again!”)
One winner is Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask, so believes Nate Davis of USA Today.
With Brady set to call it a day and QB2 Blaine Gabbert headed for free agency, the 2021 second-rounder – Trask didn’t take a snap as a rookie – is now the only quarterback on the Bucs roster. That will change, but maybe Trask’s opportunity is coming much sooner than he realized.
Yes, Trask is the only quarterback on the Tampa Bay roster if Brady retires. Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin are pending free agents.
Would the Bucs hand over the keys to a guy who has never taken a snap in the NFL, never been on an active gameday roster? The last we saw of Trask was a preseason game. It’s hard gauge how well Trask played against Amazon drivers, short-order cooks and pipefitters.
Midway through the season, Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich began singing the praises of Trask, saying he does so many things like a seasoned veteran but reporters never got a chance to see it because media, since The Sickness broke out, is banned by the NFL from walking inside the walls of One Buc Palace and is never allowed to watch a regular-season practice other than stretching, individual drills and maybe special teams work.
So Joe asked Leftwich if he could share a couple of examples of what Trask is doing behind the scenes like a seasoned vet. Leftwich responded he’d rather keep that information to himself.

I am good with Trask taking over and seeing if he can be one of the up and coming NFL talents of our day or do we need to look elsewhere 2023… Use the draft and free agents to refill the best possible way to give the team success…

This is the year to see what we have in Trask. The draft isn’t stocked with qb talent this year and we still have a solid oline, Mike Evans maybe Chris Godwin. It’s not a bad setup for a young quarterback. Get a much better idea with this team than say the jets or jags and there young qbs

@Bruce – highly unlikely the Bucs draft a rookie QB. Trask is basically a rookie – no need for two. The WFT did that with Kirk and Bob Griffen a few years ago – it didn’t work.

If for no other reason, I wish Brady would play one more season and have Trask as the #2. The other reasons to have Brady back are pretty obvious.

@ Bruce – highly unlikely the Bucs pick a rookie QB – that’s basically what the already have in Trask. It didn’t really work for thw WFT when they picked Bob Griffin III and Captain Kirk.

Just starting to be unconfortable with all this Brady reirement situation….. Bucs needs planning same as the rest of the league and this situation does not help……, I love TB12, but he did not win a SB by hismself, he had a GREAT team around him, so it´s not about him and his feelings about next year team…..We probably will loose some players, but the roster is still great….In case this situation not being comfortable with next year team is correct….which Is hard to believe……

It would benefit Trask and TBBs, If Brady goes one more. They could let Trask get more knowledge. Also, benefit from tutelage from TB12.

I’m not understanding all of the Trask criticism. The kid did pretty good in the toughest conference in college football, the SEC. 69 td’s v. 15 picks. Yea – go out and get Jimmy GQ but I’m also in favor a giving Trask his shot.

Joe, I think Trask would be more of a winner if he had one more year at the feet of the goat as his back up. That being said a close family friend of ours is friends with Trask having gone to UF with him. I asked our friend for some insight into Trask, and this is what he had to say. Trask is all about football. Not much of a party goer, very level headed, friend to all. He lives for football, and grinds away at it like that’s all there is. At least it’s safe to say he won’t be grabbing headlines by grabbing the crotch of uber drivers.

Bucs fans and management will be winners as long as they don’t do what they did in 2013, which is go into the season with a Josh Mccown type backup journeyman throned to be a viable starter. There is no need to go after putrid Gabbert or a Bridgewater or their likes. They don’t need to spend any draft capital on any QB not named Rodgers, Wilson or Watson. Even Derek Carr, who is a solid QB would be only a good signing as a free agent, but not if we trade for him. I would much rather take a 4 win season with Trask than a 8-10 win meaningless average season with an average starting QB. There is no future for any franchise if their QB is not a baller. Broncos have been in the worst possible situation for quite some time and I don’t want Bucs to try to become the Broncos after Manning retired.

I would imagine when Brady was signed by NE as a 6th round pick….ignorant NE posters at Joe Patriot Fan……claimed that Brady would lead them to an awful season.
How does anybody really know how good or how bad Trask will be?…..they don’t.

Next year’s schedule is no joke. We play basically every playoff team and wildcard team. If Trask is the guy – I hope he’s been studying and eating all the avocado ice cream in Tampa Bay.

Wow, so many closed minds in Bucsville nowadays. I’ve come to expect that in political elections, but heck this is football … give Trask a chance. No one knows what we have in him … yet. We’ll find out soon enough, but danged, at least give him a chance.
Trask may not be the answer, but IF he is, Bucs just struck gold. That’ll allow us to use our available draft picks and salary CAP $$$ to fill other NEEDS. And we’ve got many, so IF Trask works out, that’d be a VERY VERY GOOD THING.
I look at what New England was able to accomplish this year (10-7 & playoffs) with rookie Mac Jones at the helm and I’m encouraged. Granted he has an excellent defense backing him up (#2 in the NFL) AND he had a decent running game (#8 in the NFL) which both lighten the load on him somewhat. BUT … he still performed reasonably well (Pats had the #6 ranked offense). Jones only threw 11 INTs on the season, and I’m sure that a part of that was that the Pats’ offense didn’t put the game on his shoulders all the time, like we did with Tom Brady.
With Trask at QB, Bucs COULD take a similar approach. IF BA uses Trask like he did Winston, Trask will probably fail. That’s asking too much of a rookie QB IMO. Instead, make sure he has a good defense in back of him, a good OLine in front of him, and a decent running game to keep the opposing defenses honest. Get him a quality TE, RB & slot WR to work the shorter passing game effectively and he MIGHT surprise a lot of JBFers.

I’m happy either way. As long as we don’t let Godwin and Fournette go. We need to focus on finding corners (hire Richard Sherman as a coach), outside linebackers that can cover and blitz due to too many one dimensional players there (maybe try Devin White there and get a middle linebacker) [maybe someone like Kwon Alexander at mlb if he’s free. Or try Britt there.], fix our OL, TEs, and RB depth.
Hope JTS get stronger and work on leverage for bull rushes. He got potential. Just need consistency. If he play a little lower pad level and keep moving his legs, then I think he’ll improve.
I’m happy about the future for this team. If Brady and Gronkowski stay or retire, then I’m happy either way. They served their purpose. Gave us fans bragging rights. Very thankful for this year and last year squad.

I don’t really understand the hate trask gets he’s played 0 snaps in the nfl give him a chance. He’s got talent that’s not the issue. He put up a lot of numbers in college so kid can play. Now does that mean he’s going to be great in the nfl? Hell no but I’d be fine seeing what he can do if tommy calls it quits which I think he’s going to. I’d rather see him play and either prove he’s a talent worth investing in on his rookie deal then seeing a guy like Kirk cousins or bridgewater or minshew or gabBert type bought in so they can be average and maybe lead us to 8-8 or 9-7.barring bringing in Rodger’s,Watson, or Wilson I say give him a chance let ‘em him play. Hell if he does play and oh idk wins games against next years schedule he’s a keeper for sure.

Many many many other teams have gave the keys to the offense to a QB that has never taken a snap in the NFL. not really a big deal. It happens every year. We drafted him for this very reason right here. That’s why I never AGREED with Joe on the whole we don’t have time to develop players we are all in for the SUPER BOWL. That’s why JOE just writes stories and isn’t a NFL exc. you have to develop the players you draft for reason like this one. TB12 hasn’t retired yet but if he does that’s why last year we got a QB to develop behind Brady invade injury or retirement. YOU PLAY FOR THE PRESENT AND AT THE SAMW TIME DEVELOP FOR THE FUTURE LIKE WITH ANY BUSINESS.

Where’s the $$ going to come from to sign a FA QB? dont complain about the QB situation. we knew we were gettin an elite OLD QB. he wasn’t going to play here for 5 years. i love and appreciate everything TB12 has done for the Buc’s Loved him with the Pats since they beat the Rams in the Superbowl back in 2001. (I Hate the Rams and their d-bag fans). Let’s roll and see what we have in Trask before we say he sucks. We gambled the future and won a Superbowl and division title and after the last 10-15 years i’ll take it!!! LET’S F’N GO BOYS!!!!!

Let Trask start if TB12 does not come back. Bring in an experienced back up if things go south. Mariotta is a FA and would be a good back up to have and would not cost much.

I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be Trask other than the fact Arians has always liked Gabbert even though he’s garbage. This long list of hot diaper QBs available would only cost more money than Trask so there is no reason to not give the SEC QB a Burrow chance.

I am going to give Trask the benefit of the doubt. U of F was sh*t before he became starting QB. He lifted them from also ran and almost won a Heisman on the way.
I hope he makes it, but I don’t want to see another five year plan, we have been there and done that.
Trask flies or sinks in two years, nothing more, but he would probably end up like so many ex-Buc QBs, and win a Stupor Bowl.
For back-up, Blake Bortles would be cheap; and he can replace Gabbert yet again.

I would love to see what Trask could do. Any young quarterback is a crap shoot. He doesn’t have to be Tom Brady. No one is. He doesn’t have to carry the team. It is time for the defense to step up and take the lead. Offensively we need to protect the ball. It was fun to lead the league in offense but not necessary. Trask would have plenty of weapons. His task would be to manage the offense. This team in this division could and should make the playoffs no matter who the QB is. We may not be Super Bowl material but we should at least be able to make the show. Trask came out of nowhere to shine for the Gators. Who is to say he can’t do the same for the Bucs. I would much prefer go with Trask versus a retread who has proven to be ineffective. Now if Tom decides to return for a victory lap, all the better. It would give the Bucs one more year to develop Trask. With focused coaching attention and film study of the GOAT, he would come out as prepared as a young QB could be.

Give Trask a chance to win the starting job in training camp. Lets look at the likely qbs that will be available: Winston, Jimmy G, Cam Newton, Bridgewater, etc,,,,, None of those guys are better than mediocre so why not try to see what the Trask kid can do.

I thought Trask looked pretty good in preseason, it was hard to really evaluate since he was playing with a bunch of guys who wouldn’t make their teams, but he showed he is pretty accurate, and a lot more mobile than Tom Brady
If we can make it work on the cap, I’d trade for Jimmy G with just one year left on his deal. Make them compete. If Jimmy looks better with Arians, then you keep him and extend to a long term deal. I think he might just a better idea than an actual fit in Shanahans offense, Jimmy is pretty mobile, but he’s really more like Tom Brady that drops back and then throws, just with more speed to run for a first down or run away from Aaron Donald….

Kyle Trask is listed as being 6’5″ and 236 lbs. That’s a pretty big guy to try to wrestle down.
Josh Allen’s big. He’s 6’5″ and 237 lbs.

Mebbe with Brady’s announcement, a lot of trolls and naysayers on here will leave. Quite a few of them are idiots. We don’t know much about Trask cos he hasn’t really played in a regular season game. He deserves his chance. Gabbert stinks. I hope Bowles stays another year and finishes the defense. The off-season will be interesting cos of all the changes. Bucs have a good core to build from for a nice change. SB and Division champs…….nice change from double-digit losers, bottom feeders, etc.

The stats below from the 2020 SEC Championship Game show that Kyle Trask played toe-to-toe with Mac Jones. Jones started as a rookie in the 2021 season with the Patriots and did well. What’s with all the Trask hatred here saying he can’t start and do well? What’s the factual basis for all that? None.
Mac Jones: 418 YDS / 9.7 AVG / 5 TD / 1 INT / QBR 92.3
Kyle Trask: 408 YDS / 10.2 AVG / 3 TD / 0 INT / QBR 91.7

People keep posting Kyle Trask’s stats like they mean something.
Success in the NFL is about tools and skillsets, not college statistics.
NFL talent evaluators have a uniform opinion Kyle Trask — he doesn’t have elite arm talent and lacks explosive athleticism to move and create outside the pocket.
That’s usually a recipe for disaster as a QB. If you watched him at Florida or in the pre-season, you could see the lack of zip on his passes and the way his deep throws would flutter.
He was a late-2nd round pick for a reason. If you’re starting Kyle Trask, you’re accepting a full rebuild of the team, and you may as well trade guys who won’t be around in 2-3 years for whatever you can get right now.

Honestly, the reason I say give Trask a hard look is the division isn’t going to be strong w/ the teams x QBs in the division. This might be the yr to get away w/ it & still be competitive.
