Bucs In Line For Two Additional Third-Round Draft Picks

January 27th, 2022

A windfall could be coming the Buccaneers’ way in a matter of hours, welcome ammunition to reload for the 2022 season.

Joe is talking about the new NFL rule that says if you lose a non-white assistant coach or executive because he or she is hired by another team as a head coach — or hired away and promoted as a general manager or top football executive — then the team the coach or personnel executive departed is rewarded with two third-round draft picks by the league.

Those picks would come at the end of the third round in consecutive seasons, following the traditional compensatory picks in those rounds.

Sooooo, if Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich gets the Jaguars head coaching job, which appears to be a lock, then the Bucs would score an extra third-round pick in the 2022 and 2023 NFL Drafts.

If Tom Brady were to retire soon (a big ‘if”), at least the Bucs would have extra picks with which to trade for a quarterback.

Perhaps Derek Carr, for example, could be had for both of those late third-round picks? He’s got one year left on his Raiders contract for $19.8 million.

And if Brady doesn’t retire, well, those picks sure will come in handy for an all-in-again front office.

just when you thought EEOC had no benefit. do we get double if TB and BL get gigs?

  2. HC Grover Says:

    Why only if not white?

  3. Robert Says:

BL is as good as gone. His resume will never be better than working with Brady.

  4. HC Grover Says:

Wow if Bowles gets hired too we get 4 picks?

  5. cmurda Says:

Grover. To promote the hiring of non-white assistant coaches and then to reward that team for launching the coaching career of said non-white person(s). I know. I know. You were thinking the best person for the job should be hired regardless of ethnicity. Don’t use logic. Umm, no soup for you.

  6. HC Grover Says:

OK then Bowles is not white I bet he gets a job someplace. Then we get 4 3rd rd picks this and next year. Bowles has Super Bowl win experience even with the sour end this year. With 4 3rd rd picks you can trade up around and get an extra pick.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What if we lose a WR due to insanity?

  8. Robert Says:

“What if we lose a WR due to insanity?”

2nd round compensatory pick provided they are minority or LGB….

hey, if it’s good for the SCOTUS, it’s good for the NFL

  9. JimbobBucsFan Says:

HC Grover, the NFL is currently engaging in something akin to “affirmative action” to spotlight minority coaches in the league for career advancement purposes.

Something like this is also what Bruce Arians has been engaged in voluntarily for many years now.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Is there any takers on T. Bowles?

4 third round picks would be sweet….

  11. Marine Buc Says:

How many picks do we get if one of our female coaches is named head coach in NO or Jackville?

  12. CChead Says:

If you loose 2 coordinators its 3, 3rd round picks not 4. I still would take that. Grab Kris Richards from slimy Saints and make him DC.

  13. crazybucs_CL Says:

these two coordinators getting the gig, may be the BEST scenario for us.
How about BA, do we get anything with him being gone????
    I don’t thing so… he is white, and arian … damn…

  14. fern Says:

    Derek Carr?
    I’ll pass

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    @ CChead

Cool man thanks. Did not know all the details of the rule. But I would still take three third round picks for both Bl and Todd B…

  16. Costa Rica John Says:

Unbelievable. It’s really not about the context of your character it’s about the color of your skin.

  17. Beeej Says:

If they come out as gay, does the third become a second, or maybe a first?

  18. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Color of skin is irrelevant. Hire people who are good at their jobs. Doesn’t matter the position or experience. I agree coaches are recycled way too much but it was it is. Those recycled coaches fail and the franchise will suffer. That’s the owners and managers fault. I’ll take the draft picks! So hire whoever you want but I don’t think teams should be rewarded for just hiring a minority and to watch them move on to another position. Be thankful you had them on your staff if they are wanted by others and wish them well in the future careers.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Oh great so if we lose Spytek we get nothing cause hd is a atupid white guy. Bucs better stop hiring white dudes, its hurting the team.

Hopefully this rule doesnt also apply to players. We got a couple of white on the team that I like.

  20. Ash Says:

    Bowles isn’t going anywhere

  21. Adrnagy Says:

Extra draft picks ? What for …. ? So licht can draft a kicker , punter and back up QB

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Glad the Bucs get 2 extra picks if Leftwich leaves…..

But its only because Lefty is “non-white”???

    WTF is that BS?

All teams should be compensated when they develop and then lose a top coordinator – regardless of skin color.

I wasn’t aware of that rule and am very disappointed in the NFL for the perhaps well-meaning yet still very much race dividing stance……

Humans should be judged by the content of their character and actions and in this case – job performance – NOT by the color of their skin.

  23. ClodHopper Says:

What would we get if he were white? One, or none?

  24. JimbobBucsFan Says:

So long Byron. Great job! Thanks for all that you contibuted to our success! I wish you great success. 😍 🤩 (But never at our expense! 😆)

    Go Bucs!

  25. steele Says:

Guys, you do NOT want Derek Carr. He’s awful. I’d rather tolerate Kyle Trask than Carr, a proven loser.

  26. HC Grover Says:

The team that hires a not white HC oughta get something too. How bout a extra 2nd round pick?

  27. EEK Says:

I’m glad he’s getting his shot.
The offense often seemed to start slow and they seemed quick to abandon the run game at times.
Maybe some of our success was Leftwich. If Brady can run it back this year without him, we’ll learn a lot.
Best of luck in your next job.

  28. SPARKY Says:

    [Not cool. — Joe.)

  29. sasquatch Says:

It’s supposed to incentivize hiring and advancing people who have historically been overlooked or bypassed for coaching opportunities because of race. It does seem like a ridiculous way to incentivize, but it’s something. If any clowns commenting here don’t think some kind of incentives are warranted, you might living on another planet.

  30. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

If TB12, those extra pics won’t matter much, unless they score the next Joe Burrow, or trade for Russel Wilson. Don’t want Karen Rodgers.

  31. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

I’m glad we will get the picks, but it makes no sense. If we lose a black coach, we did not do anything promoting diversity. If the Jags HIRES a black coach, that makes more black coaches. After we get our picks the NFL should try and figure out this rule. Maybe someone can educate me as to the reasoning. Perhaps I am missing something

  32. Beeej Says:

“It’s supposed to incentivize hiring and advancing people who have historically been overlooked or bypassed for coaching opportunities because of race. Who alive today bears responsibility for that?

  33. SPARKY Says:

Ok, sorry Joe, I ‘ll keep to football from now on.

  34. Mike Johnson Says:

Brady leaves, We’d better get somebody.

  35. ChiBuc Says:

I say win, win…see ya. My only question is, do we have to give the picks back if we fire Bowles?

  36. rogertampabay Says:

just talking about the mechanics of this. so lets say the saints hire one of our assistants. then we would get more draft picks. so doesnt that work against helping minorities getting jobs, if the saints hire BL, they help us by getting us picks. if the goal is to get minorities hired, shouldnt the picks go to the team that hires. it seems to be an un-incentive.

Ah yes, because obviously all the efforts of slavery disappeared the moment the last one was set free, right?

Lol, such a dumb fan base. Bunch of fragile old white men complaining about receiving extra picks…

  38. unbelievable Says:

    *effects of slavery

    Damn autocorrect

  39. PassingThru Says:

For those who dream about Leftwich AND Bowles leaving…

No, the Bucs would only receive 3 third-round picks, not 4, if they lose two black coordinators or assistants. However all 3 third-round picks would be a single season draft bonanza, rather than having the picks spread out over 2 years.

I doubt Leftwich leaving would impact Brady’s decision one way or the other. I never had the impression that Leftwich knew more about offenses and defenses than Tom Brady, though I’m sure Brady probably appreciated an extra voice. And I never thought their relationship was as strong as Brady enjoyed with Josh McDaniels or even Charlie Weis.

  40. captivajim Says:

with a solid O line; Wilson would be best trade

  41. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Last time I checked being called a member of a minority was about isssues beyond the shade or tint of your skin only. In a world where large numbers of people don’t know the difference between fact and fiction it will be interesting to see if I can find a consensus definition for the word “minority”.

  42. Mike C Says:

Unbelievable, if you believe unfair behavior is going to fix unfair behavior you surely haven’t studied history. And by history I mean something other than American.

  43. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I am sure Tom Brady can work well with any decently qualified OC. 😎 However, there is a real chance that Arians will directly take over the role when Byron Leftwich leaves us.

    Go Bucs!

  44. SOEbuc Says:

    Non-white??? Wtf is that???

  45. Irishmist Says:

How is non- whiteness defined, precisely? Are the coaching candidates given a DNA test, or are they lined up next to a color chart on a wall?

  46. Ash Says:

The sky is blue wtf is that? Lol

  47. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

BYW, this rule could punish black coaches. What if the Bucs wanted to hire a Black coordinator from the Falcons as a head coach. The Bucs would be rewarding their division rivals, the Falcons for letting someone get a better job ? I’m white and think most of these type rules hold

  48. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Mike C

Don’t worry, DeSantis will finish telling you what you can learn and what is history.

  49. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

Hold I meant to say, the people they want to help they hold them back

  50. BashingBucs2520 Says:

I’m telling you this rule is going to negatively impact non-white coaches more than it does in a positive way. Why would the Saints hire Leftwich to give a division opponent another draft pick? The coach may be gone in three years but that draft pick could turn out to be a franchise cornerstone whether by trading it or hitting the lottery in rd 3.

  51. BashingBucs2520 Says:

    @Dyno-White ! # 45

Looks like we are on the same page!

  52. Hodad Says:

David Carr? Who the hell wants that loser? Look at our division without Brees, Payton the Saints will suck. Sam Darnald, in Carolina, Matt Ryan in Atlanta they don’t worry me. For all we know Gabbert, or Trask might turn out to be the best QBs in the division.

  53. SB Says:

    Why Joe?

  54. HC Grover Says:

We need some extra picks. 17 games is too many. The players are beaten to a pulp by the 17th game. They are walking wounded out there.

  55. Mr Bean Says:

On hiring non-white candidates…. About 20 years ago, very early 2000’s, the airlines were not hiring as many pilots were on furlough. So at the local FBO (flight school) there were a bunch of us looking at how to get to the airlines. So this flight instructor (I won’t mention his name) came up with this brilliant idea. He applied to a bunch of jobs and put his ethnicity as Hispanic on all applications. Did he have an accent? Yes. Was he Hispanic – no, he was from Poland, blond hair, blue eyes, as Northern European as you can imagine. He was the first out of all of us to get a job. His FAA record still lists him as Hispanic and by now he is a captain in a major airline flying A320.

So the system, while created with the best of intentions, can be abused. On the flip side, some of the best pilots I’ve flown are black. But then again, every time they are paired with another pilot they have to be conscious of the fact that the other guy thinks they made it only because of the color of their skin; not because they are good. That is a horrible way to feel all the time, I would imagine.

  56. BuccaneerScotty Says:

we have Trask we don’t need a qb!

  57. LakelandSteve Says:

First! No one is hiring Todd Bowles after last weekends defensive play calling.

Second: As a Bucs fan it pissed me off to hear Matt Stafford out of all people talking about how he loves taking the soul out of the Bucs or more likely Tom Brady. I hope Brady somehow hears that comment. It fired me up and I am not a player, I can’t imagine what any of the Bucs players would think after hearing that.

  58. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Maybe we draft the next Big Ben! Notice I didn’t say Brady, well that’s because their will never be another Brady. Go Bucs! Winning is so sweet! Go Bucs!

  59. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Oh and remember Joe how much you loved Carr? What if he comes to the Bucs…Maybe just maybe he wins us another SB! Maybe it was destiny. I still want Brady back. Go Bucs! Searching for answers…

  60. unbelievable Says:

@Mike C – I am by no means claiming this rule is perfect, just pointing out the absurdity of some of the comments made here.

I suppose the league could just do nothing instead. Because doing absolutely nothing always seems to create change, doesn’t it? Anyways, if you or anyone else wants to cry about us getting extra draft picks, have at it.

  61. DoooshLaRue Says:

    13% deserve everything.

  62. cmurda Says:

@Jmark. No idea why you would bring an American hero into this. Just ask the tons of folks moving to Florida from the Blue drama queen states. Meh, nevermind. I’m going to get yelled at again for discussing this.

  63. Masterlock majic Says:

Bailey zappe going to be on the board..get it done

  64. Steven007 Says:

American hero?!?! Hahaha… 😆😂 Just a politician, no different than the rest.

  65. steele Says:

If Brady leaves, the problem is that 2022 and 2023 are weak draft classes for QBs. Add to that the sucky list of veterans besides Rodgers or Wilson (who may stay in Seattle, and only wants to play for four other teams inc. NO or Dallas). So in this window, Brady has some leverage, doesn’t he. Unless you give Trask a shot.

I think we need to start looking at draft and FA.
Edge: Chandler Jones, Harold Landry, Jerry Hughes, Justin Houston. Draft edge: Jermaine Johnson, Logan Hall, Arnold Ebiketie, Sam Williams, a few others.

    D line interior: Akiem Hicks.

  66. SB Says:

  69. Buczilla Says:

I’m Cuban and more than half of the people that I meet don’t know what the hell I am. I don’t mind because we are all genetically identical and equal in every way. I would personally feel belittled and embarrassed if I thought that I got a job over someone else because I am a minority. These rules do more to hinder than help race (social construct and total bs) relations.

How about we start teaching that all humans, regardless of race are equals instead of trying to shame non minorities into thinking that they’ve transgressed against minorities by the simple fact of their existence? I don’t want the fact that I’m a minority being the deciding factor as to whether or not I get a job over a non minority. CRT, this NFL rule, etc. are complete rubbish and should be tossed in the trash. We are all the same folks, whether you like it or not is irrelevant. 😜

You are making innocent people toDAY responsible for it by punishing them for being the wrong color, therefore they are, in fact, being held responsible.

  71. Winny Testaverde Says:

Going from Brady to Carr would be awfully depressing. Brady may have spoiled us fans rotten. Not sure I could stomach watching a Carr/Gaebert/Trask led Buc offense moving forward.

  72. SB Says:

I hate when you can’t bring up a valid point when numerous invalid points were already posted.

  73. Swampbuc Says:

I prefer my pizza with pepperoni, sometimes with some other toppings.

And air fryer chicken wings are the only way to make ’em.

  74. unbelievable Says:

Holy dramatics. Who are these “innocent people being punished” LOFL?

All I see are some extra incentives being given to owners to have them give a deeper look at certain candidates who have historically been passed over, even when equally qualified.

There are no quotas here. Nothing is forcing someone to hire a less qualified coach just bc their skin color. Bunch of snowflakes.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

It’s pretty disgusting that in 2022 we’d still have people who will defend making decisions purely based on the tone of someone’s skin.

BTW, what would Obama get in this assistant coach auction? He’s only half-black, so does he only bring in one 3rd rounder? What if you have a coach that is a quadroon, or an octoroon, do you get like a 6th or 7th rounder? What’s the exact cutoff that makes someone not black enough for the NFL to give compensation?

  76. DoooshLaRue Says:

  78. unbelievable Says:

@Rod- who is making decisions “based purely on someone’s skin tone”?

    Answer: no one.

This is why I said y’all are being waaaaay over dramatic about this.

  79. steele Says:

In response to Stafford’s trash talk, Brady and the offense sucked the soul out of the Rams to tie the game, and I believe would have sucked what little was left of the ashes, had they won the toss in OT. If Stafford wants to talk trash, he can say all he wants about the final two big plays, props to him and Kupp. But he didn’t touch Tom Brady.

I was going to ask you guys about rooting interest for this weekend. This decided it. Go 49ers.

  80. Swampbuc Says:

I’m cheering for US soccer to continue their quest for world cup qualification. Screw football.

  81. Christos Says:

We can say what we want about other Qbs and how they fit and we have a lot of talent. Many of those arguments could be true. But i really hope Brady comes back for one last ride. When he came to our beloved Bucs i always anticipated 2 or 3 years, lets be honest he wasnt gonna play until 50. I really hope he comes back. Is not the yards, is not the TDs, is not the far fewer turnovers, is not how he make the OL far better in our eyes cause he knows when to give up a play or take a short pass. Sure is all of them but the most important thing is the aura, the leadership, call it what you want. He taught this team and these players how to win. All of the years of the Lost Decade we remember how many times this team figured out new ways to loose. Brady show them how to win. I m not sure if he goes all of the other players learned his lessons. We say many of our young up and coming players regress this year mostly because they thought that they were Probowlers. Hope Brady stays for a last year. Go Bucs

  82. Anonymous Says:

Good luck Coach Leftwich, and thank you for running one of the NFL’s top offenses here in Tampa for the 3 years you were here. While some detractors just cannot credit you for the numbers your offense put up, players and coaches know you were the leader of this offense. I’m tickled not quite pink reading angry, envious comments from people who have had the entire pie for years crying about someone else finally getting a sliver.

  83. Colin in Canada Says:

The league wants to give an incentive to teams to develop minority coaches and executives because diversity is a strength. The bucs have done a good job with this and the team may benefit from it. That is a good thing.

I think saying “non-whites” instead of minority is an interesting choice from the Joes and seems to have revved up a few of the people in this comment section. I read the resolution and it does not say “non-whites” anywhere in it.

Hopefully BL and TB both stay because they are doing a great job.

  84. Doctor Stroud Says:

Talk of Derek Carr coming to the Bucs has been going on since Lovie Smith was the coach and attempted to install Jeff Tedford as offensive coordinator.

  85. Mike C Says:

Against rasism is for old white fragile guys.

  87. Bucs Guy Says:

Because if BA has said and we’ve seen how hard it is for a Qb to learn his system in one year . Sign who we got and need! Really? How about all those offensive sacks and turnovers allowed/caused by the Bucs offense in the first half? The way the defense didn’t give up and kept at the Rams in the second almost won Tampa Bay the game. I hope Bowles stays and finishes building our defense.
