Bruce Arians Offers Insight Into Why Byron Leftwich Is A Good Coach

January 4th, 2022

Gets love from Bucco Bruce.

Joe suspects for however many more games the Bucs have this season, whether it is two or five, that Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians will be happy to offer up why his offensive and defensive coordinators, Bryon Leftwich and Todd Bowles, should be hired by another NFL team as a head coach.

One such chance came for Leftwich yesterday in Arians’ day-after presser.

Arians was asked about how Leftwich has receivers ready to step in immediately, sometimes just hours after being elevated from the practice squad.

“He’s a hell of a coach,” Arians said of Leftwich. “He has a great way of explaining things to guys in a very simplistic manner and he’s very calm – totally different than me.

“He just has them ready. They have bought in, and they are doing everything they can to get better. They’re really showing up on the field.”

Joe guesses the best example of that is the immortal Cyril Grayson. Bouncing around the league trying to hang on after never playing college ball at LSU, Grayson has found a spot on the Bucs and looks to be, because of injuries and a quitter, a major factor at receiver for the rest of the 2021 season.

Hell, Grayson may be a starter. For a playoff team. For a defending Super Bowl champion.

If Grayson and others are examples of Leftwich being able to develop young players, that’s going to be a selling point for him when he has a sitdown with an NFL general manager for a head coach job opening.

  1. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He could go to Jacksonville as a head coach. but there is one big problem. Jacksonville has chosen to retain Trent Baalke!

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs are 4-3 in games when they fall behind early.
The key to success in playoffs is to get an early lead and then rely on D and running game- coming from behind against playoff teams is very difficult.
Leftwich’s early game plans will be on trial…

  3. Adrnagy Says:

Hes garbage. Cant wait for leftwich and arians to leave.

Everything works when you have tom brady.

  4. AMI_Chris Says:

I don’t care about the Jags but: Can Shad Khan really afford to take another flyer on an unproven coach? Gus Bradley, Doug Marrone, Urban Meyer — none had any pedigree as an NFL head coach. I think the Jags need to do what the Bucs did with Bruce Arians — hire an experienced head coach with some demonstrable level of past success in that role.

  5. lambchop Says:

    @Adrnagy,

I wouldn’t say he’s garbage, but Tom Brady does make everyone look like geniuses. But, with BL and BA gone, what certainty do we have that the next coaches will be any better? For whatever reason, JL, BL, BA, TB, and Tom Brady together make this work. If you take any of those pieces out, I don’t know that we’d be SB winners or NFC South champs this season.

  6. Weebs10 Says:

I still don’t get how some of our fans hate on this coaching staff. Yes, Tom Brady is the GOAT but my goodness we have to give some credit to the coaches for last years magical run and keeping the ship afloat with all the injuries this year.

  7. Francisco Guzman Says:

Weebs10 is that even a question? You know how many times this coaching has gotten outcoached? Also don’t seem prepared on game day.

  8. Francisco Guzman Says:

We will see what BL can really do now. How can they scheme their way into scoring points without a guy like AB.

  9. PanhandleBuc Says:

He needs to step his game up on play calling creativity!

When Adrnagy says that Leftwich is no good and he can’t wait for Leftwich and BA to leave, it is because Adrnagy was a Jamies fan.

    Just remember Adrnagy’s past assessments:

Is not that jameis hasn’t receive offers … I’m sure he has. The fact that jameis may not want those offers and is waiting for Bucs. Loyalty ?

Josh jones. A. Jackson. E. Cleveland Etc etc were still available.
If Tristan wirfs was all that .. why did he got passed 13times ?

  11. Lesko_Brandon Says:

BL’s offensive Philosophy, first play, run the ball in the middle, lost 2 yards, second and 12 play, run a screen pass, gain 5 yards, third and 7, throw a deep ball to Mike Evans that has double coverage, incomplete. There you go 3 and out. Punt 30 yards…….

  12. Jp09 Says:

@ Geno, that’s great stuff. It’s amazing how much people whine and cry when they don’t get there way

  13. Bruce Blahak Says:

2nd and 2, empty backfields? ….infatuated with passing, they’re very capable of pounding the ball on people but…

  14. LostDecadeSurvivor Says:

People who this BA/BL are terrible simply don’t understand football at a deep enough level to respect their opinion. Like sure they aren’t Bill Bellicheck, but that’s like drafting Herbert and complaining that he’s not Brady.

  15. Seńor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I would add Perriman to that list with Greyson. Perryman did not do much in the NFL until he came to the Bucs 2 years ago. Then he was sitting at home this year and since being back with the Bucs, he has caught some key passes.

  16. Craig Says:

Leftwich is too conservative on his base plays. With Brady there is always another play waiting, but that is Brady and his super powers.

Leftwich runs the ball on first down. It is as consistent as the sun coming up in the morning. That is too old school for the current NFL, with Mahomes, Jackson, Hurts and such creating a new normal.

Leftwich at the Jags would look worse than Bowles did in Jets land.

  17. HC Grover Says:

Enjoy this while you can. If the coaches and top players leave next year it will be back to the rebuild grinder.

  18. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Todd Bowles defensive philosophy, Don’t touch the opposing QB. Give him time to tie his shoe lace. For the Linebackers, tackle the other team like you are tackling your grandma. And for the DB’s, just pray that the ball does not head your way otherwise, oh well, another completion.

  19. Adrnagy Says:

    @geno.
You keep drinking toilet water. And stop being obsessed of me. Dont make up stuff.

Ask yourself … what has leftwich done ? Cardinals? Bucs ? Take away brady and see.

Ill give credit to bowles. He has done alot with defense ALONE.

  20. LVMYBUCS Says:

If he has to explain why he is a good coach then he aint a good coach. Good coaches need no explanation.

  21. Adrnagy Says:

Arians is obsessed with making leftwich a HC to make him feel a HERo.

Last year leftwich and arians offense was horrible until they turn to brady. And we all know at least those who know football that the defense and all players responded to brady not leftwich or arians. Playoff lenny was born after arians smashing him thru season

Arians and leftwich couldnt develop and gave up on winston.
So youre telling me Leftwich and arians will develop trask ? Lol

He didn’t make up anything. He didn’t type anything or add anything. He simply posted YOUR posts over the past couple of years.

  24. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joe

You make an excellent point! With the GOAT on the team it’s hard to guage BL’s true talent from the QB position. TB12 obviously has a LOT to say about the offense and game plans.

But it’s not just the QB position that should on BL’s resume. Your post is spot on Joe.

Even at QB however the fact that Brady is the GOAT and probably taught BL more than BL has taught him is not a negative at all!! It means BL has total control of his own ego and that in the process he’s had the chance to pick the brain of the GOAT for two Super Bowl runs…the first already successful.

  25. BA4President Says:

If Brady was the ONLY reason for the team’s success, then he would have closer to 20 Super Bowl rings rather than 7. Brady makes everything much better, but there are no Super Bowls without his team mates and coaches showing greatness as well.

Was the Bucs offense good the year before Brady?

  27. Lesko_Brandon Says:

I can’t believe ADRNAGY said that about Brady…. “a leftover ?” “will not win another SB ” “no arm strength”… oh my…..

@Geno711,,, r u keeping track of all people posting here ? LOL !!!

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

Did anyone watch that last game??? Prepared? Wake up Bucs fans those were your starting DB’s and once again made a mediocre at best QB look like a 10 year vet. 2 offsides on D AGAIN!!! And 2 unsportsman like penalties on offense. The players had no consideration of winning the game. The sideline pass play call to Rojo scared the crap out of me, if Brady doesn’t throw a bullet that could of been disastrous. BL gets credit for Grayson, please Grayson and Brady get credit for Grayson. I said it before with a offense as talented as this one WAS, they should be running plays other teams wish they could. Oh right or wrong, the way BA handles AB situation is BS. Great coach my arse, 40 yrs coaching 2 SB’s as an assistant to two GREAT HC’s and make NO mistake Brady got him last seasons,.not only aging but bringing the right talent, who wouldn’t of played for BA and changing team culture.

  29. Bobby M. Says:

Jags are looking to DEVELOP a young QB…..who has Leftwich DEVELOPED? Two back ups….I don’t give Leftwich any credit for Brady, that’s laughable. I think Jags look at Chargers OC or Cowboys OC….they’ve been there, done that.

  30. geno711 Says:

    @Lesko_Brandon

I pick up on a few of the most hatefully negative guys.

Adrnagy was one of a dozen or so.

  31. Listnfrmafar Says:

    playing, not aging.

  32. TBNative Says:

To all who would disparage our coaching staff, let’s pause for a moment of reflection:

    Raheem Morris
    Greg Schiano
    Lovie Smith
    Dirk Koetter

It’s easy to say “throw out the coaching staff and start over!!” but starting over is a long and painful process with no guarantees. Sure, Brady is a huge part of our success right now but I’ll take a Super Bowl championship followed by a 12/13-win season – coupled with some infuriating play calling and failure to make in-game adjustments – over another “lost decade.”

  33. Ben green Says:

Just look at the offense the first 5-6 games last year. I think leftwich was calling the shots, and it didn’t look good. Brady changed things, and effectively calls the plays. At least leftwich had brains enough not to mess with greatness, and got out of the way. I don’t think he’s a very good coach, and any team that hires him will look like the chuck and duck Winston bucs

  34. Ed Says:

Lets see how Leftwich adapts to the new starting lineups. There is no longer an over the middle threat (Godwin) or a route running dart (Brown). What he has are vertical burners with Perriman and Grayson. Can he find a way to get those guys the ball in open space.

Also will he change up the repetitive WR screens which need receivers like Godwin and Brown make a quick move and get a missed tackle for decent yards. Evans, Grayson and Perriman are not receivers that have the ability to cut and get WR screens.

The Bucs will have to create more opportunities for the guys on the field and find some tricks to get points on the board.

I’m going to wait and see what kind of adjustments he makes going into and during the first playoff game. If they run the exact same offense they have been running I believe good defenses will take away the middle of the field and the crossing routes.

Can Mike Evans be schemed more into this offense or is he strictly a downfield and red zone receiver? This is a test for Leftwich.

  35. Lesko_Brandon Says:

With the offensive firepower the Bucs currently have, we should be cruising against teams that have no chance of getting into the playoffs. It turns out, it is always a nail biter and Brady has to carry everyone out from the toilet. If BA and BL have the imagination and creative ways to scheme, create more play action, flee-flicker, double cross route, cross-route with one player all the way down,… with this talent you can do anything other than run in the midle with no opening.

  36. Steven007 Says:

Geno, that was heroic trolling Ardvark with his own posts. And then to have him come back and have the gall to imply that you misrepresented him?!

List, FYI, the first two scores were made largely with our starting secondary not in the game. You are aware of the travel snafu I presume. If not, there was a significant one resulting in our two starting defensive backs not even arriving to the stadium until after the game had begun.

  37. SKBucsFan Says:

As much as it wouldn’t hurt me to be Leftwich go, I will feel bad for the Jags if he becomes the head coach. Trevor Lawrence’s career will go downhill fast! BL doesn’t seem to be a good leader. They don’t need a players coach, they need a hardline, hard working coach to whip them into contenders. …well that and a good draft or two.

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Quick question for the coaching staff naysayers. Answer truthfully now. Would Tom Brady have come here if there was a different coaching staff?

Now, we can argue that they could do better BUT…how much control does Brady have to change plays at the LOS? And, if we’re to give credit for a top 3-5 offense, lets not forget the year that Mr. 50/50 had before Tom.

As to the defense, IMO no coach has done more in less time with the roster we have. Yes, we have Suh and LVD but look at the secondary. They’re all young players.

Point is, you can’t have it both ways. When they play well it’s the players, when bad it’s the coaching. WRONG! It’s a TEAM effort. If you’re still banging on the coaches after a SB victory and a 12-13 win season, there’s something wrong with you, IMO!
Dare I invoke the name “Pressbox Smitty”?! Have we forgotten how horrid, passive, and soft his defenses were?!

  39. Listnfrmafar Says:

Bucsfan, to be honest I think Brady saw wasted talent that he could have success with and by selling Gronk on the team he had all the pieces he needed. Keep in mind, if.he failed how would his legacy be viewed compared to Belichick? I will say this I believe he would of rather gone to 49ers because Shanahan has a very creative offense and had the players, Vrabel in Tenn because the weakest part of their offense is QB and then Bucs. I think the coaching staff was more of an allure for Gronk than Brady. I can’t see him going gaga over BL as his OC.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

    How do you spell Jaguars.

  41. Rob Singer Says:

BA needs to explain why he’s lying about the AB incident. He didn’t “quit”–AB simply left the field (get the hell off the field!”) just as he was told to do. The only AB mistake was to do it in such dramatic style.

We’ve got AB saying his ankle was hurting while AB claims there was no such discussion. He only says he won’t say what the issue was that got them both upset.

BA, here’s some advice: you just took away Brady’s no. ONE receiver and good friend whom he was mentoring. Just before the playoffs. Either come clean….or WATCH OUT! You don’t want Brady being your enemy.

  42. Ben green Says:

Lesco, you make a great point. Brady doesn’t have the time to draw up plays. That’s the coaches job. The offense is very unimaginative, and without Godwin and Brown, can’t be run the same way. Godwin and Brown could get open very quickly, hence the targets. These other recievers can’t get open as fast and the offense needs to morph. They have three quality tight ends. Ben would like to see the bucs feature them all in 12 and 13 personel. It was nearly unstoppable in NE with gronk and Hernandez. I question if leftwich has the ability to change the offense that much.

  43. Ed Says:

Tom Brady top statistical quarterback in NFL, #1 in below categories. Certainly should be one of the MVP’s. If Brady gets 300 yards passing vs Panthers he will set his career high. 488 yards and he sets the record for most passing year in NFL history in surpassing Manning and Brees, albeit they did it in 16 games.

    Total Passing Yards: 4990

    Completions: 456

    Touchdowns: 40

    Passing attempts: 682

  44. David Says:

I really hope BL stays. He needs more time before he becomes a head coach.

Bowles hopefully stays on as well.
    Wishful thinking.

  45. Captain Oblivious Says:

In my experience, if your boss is talking you up to another organization, he is trying to get rid of you.

  46. Anonymous Says:

This coaching staff is so incompetent they managed to win a Super Bowl last year, have the second best record in the NFL this year, be top ranked in offensive and defensive categories and get superstar players to buy in and take less to be a member of this team. Could it be that the negative commenters who never coached on any level have no clue how good they have it?

  47. Buczilla Says:

I’m not too happy with Bowles right now since the pathetic jets just steamrolled us with their running game, but I think that Byron deserves a shot though. Bad coaches like Jeff Fisher keep their jobs for years and even get second chances, but Byron can barely get a whiff for an interview?!? It’s nonsense and Byron deserves his shot.

  48. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    “………..Todd Bowles defensive philosophy….”

    🤣😂🤣

    spot on.

  49. Wesley Says:

But why the deep balls on 3rd and short? Some of his calls are just dumb.

  50. Buczilla Says:

I want to rip my hair out on some of Byron’s calls, but every coach makes bad calls. Byron has presided over one of the best offenses in the nfl three years running and won a super bowl. Other guys have gotten head coaching jobs by accomplishing far less and Byron can’t even get an interview! Well, maybe by the sorrowful jags, but he should be a top two or three candidate right now.

  51. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Just because you say it doesn’t make it so. Lefty is not a good OC & would be a worse HC.

  52. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

I’m still trying to figure out who BA is trying to convince, himself or us.
