Did Tom Brady Blast The Defense?

Interesting take from Richard Sherman after Tampa Bay sports media icon and Bucs Kickoff podcast host Rock Riley asked him about letting Buffalo come back in the second half Sunday.
Rock was focused a bit on the great pride the defense takes in stopping the run. Sherman took it a step further and implied that Tom Brady himself wagged a finger at the defense for allowing Buffalo to drop 24 points in the second half.
“Quarterback runs are always tough to deal with, but there is a sense of urgency to the defense and a sense of understanding that that cannot happen ever again,” Sherman said. “You know, regardless of the scenario, what the situation is, especially going into the playoffs, it’s time to button it up. And I think guys have gotten that message. TB really gave it to us in the meeting, obviously after the game. And we’re going to get that fixed.”
Joe loves that one-liner, “TB really gave it to us in the meeting.”
Sherman earlier noted that Brady has crazy attention to detail and routinely sits in on meetings for every offensive position group.
Or was “TB” defensive coordinator Todd Bowles?

TB12 is the man, and we are so lucky. He gets it. He builds relationships and leads people through inclusion, motivation and by winning. He’s not just big-timing people in meetings. He’s the master, the GOAT, our generations Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan/Wayne Gretzky. Am I the only one that feels this might be confusing. TB could be Tom Brady it maybe Todd Bowles, who one would expect to get after the defensive players. We should probably ask Bowles to change his initials to prevent us from being confused. There can be only one.

That “elite” rush defense gave up over 170 yards, at 9.1 yards per carry.
On the season the Bucs are 19th is opponent yards per carry, they’re not special, and certainly not elite. Teams don’t run on the Bucs all that much, but when they do, they have good success, in particular if they stick to it.
Hopefully the defense can turn it back on like they did for the playoffs last year, otherwise its all going to be on Brady’s arm.

Yeah I’m sure TB is Todd Bowles. Wouldn’t make much sense for Tom Brady to be reaming out the defense when he didn’t have his best game heading into the 2nd half. Doesn’t seem like his fits his character

It seems that 20 years ago, men could take an asschewing and not turn it into a “diss” and decompensate into sniveling weaklings. Now everyone wants to be told how great they are when they aren’t, and any criticism is deemed to be unjust and worthy of a march, protest and cancellation of someone.
The proof is in the incredulity at the idea that TB would jump somebody’s ass.

Listened to the interview. I agree with other posters that Sherman was talking about Todd Bowles, not Tom Brady.
So the answer to Joe’s title is?
No Tom Brady did not blast the defense.

Our biggest team problem is that the offense is elite at times and the defense never is but when the defense gets a 3& out or at least gets off the field fairly quickly the offense does the same, goes 3& out out gets of the field quickly. Rarely ever does it take advantage of that. It does score off turnovers but you can’t rely on them. Too many times when one side of the team gets hot the other goes cold. Unfortunately in the Bills game they both went cold in the second half. So many try to blame BL for lack of imagination when calling plays but every play he calls has worked in different games, everything is based upon blocking and execution and its not his fault when they don’t happen OR the other team plays better. Our offensive problems is not his fault its the players from Brady down. In the Bills game everybody thought we would or should run it down their throat because other teams did it and the Bills have the best pass defense in the NFL. Instead BL and Brady showed that they would do what they wanted to do and passed on every play. The Bills game is a microcosm of our season. Either the defense slips when the offense does its job or vice versa. When or if they ever start playing complimentary football like they did in overtime we will be unbeatable because we’re still winning even though the team struggles, but still the offense has to score at least 30 points because we are undefeated every time we do that.

If that’s not commonplace in the NFL, then that’s just another reason he is the GOAT. Knowing on what’s going on in the heads of everyone on offense seems like a necessary thing for a QB to know.

Just to clarify in the middle of the interview, Sherman was clearly talking about Tom Brady and that he sat in the middle of all the offensive meetings to discuss things.
At the very end of the interview, Sherman was talking about how Todd Bowles blasted the defense.

Complimentary football for this team is if the offense plays 45 mins and the defense plays 15mins. Because if the offense scores the defense will give it right back or try to. Which in turn gets them tired, worn out so they can tackle. They are good against garbage teams like the Bears but any kind of Good competitive team or no name QB they can’t hold their own.

This defense is always going to be susceptible to the QB runs.
If teams wanna attack us like Josh Allen and run the QB between the tackles, have at it. I was having fun watching our deliver blow after blow to Allen……Eventually it was one hit too many and Allen had to finish the game hobbled.
Gotta give a lot of credit to Allen. Very impressive what he was able to do on one ankle…….But good luck to any QB trying to minimck that. They will be lucky not to ed nd up like Winston finishing the game on crutches.
That game plan wong beat us in the playoffs.

They clearly were not the game plan. It was Jos Allen runs…….They found a few holes vs a prevent defense. Big deal.
A team like that could never beat us with their RBs, thats why they barely used them…………If you are worried about RBs running all over us then worry about Kamara this Sunday, and we’ve pretty much owned him as a rushers as far as i can remember.

Agree with JimmyJack on that one Rod. Of Buffalo’s 19 runs, Allen had 12 of those (for 109 yds). Singletary had 4 (for 52 yds) & Breida had 3 (for 12 yds). Allen was obviously huge in the run game, but neither Singletary nor Breida had any rushes in the 1st half (it was ALL Josh Allen). Singletary had 2 great runs in the 2nd half: one for 29 yds around right end; another for 18 yds over left tackle (his other 2 rushes went for 2 yds & 3 yds). Breida had 1 good run for 11 yds over left guard (plus 2 runs of -3 yds and 4 yds).
Our biggest problem in terms of the run was that we gave up several BIG ones (which we don’t normally do). Longest ones: Allen 14 yds (right end); Allen 10 yds (left end); Singletary 29 yds ( right end); Allen 18 yds (left guard); Breida 11 yds (left guard); Allen 23 yds (left guard). Those 6 runs represent 104 of their 173 yds rushing. Don’t happen to see any trends there, do ya Rod?

Taysom Hill, Even without a busted finger (it’s not in great shape, throwing hand too) doesn’t have half the arm talent Allen has. If he wants to try and run on us all day, bring it. Typically we do well against kamara too. Don’t get me wrong, we need to take this game very seriously and absolutely destroy these posers.

Without the defense their is no superbowl so please stop with the media narratives!! I believe that was Brady right just like the defense deserve some criticism Brady does to ain’t no player is exempt for criticism !!!

TB = Todd Bowles in this case, but wither way, more than well deserved. Pathetic and embarrassing. But TB12 did his best Shaun King impression for most of the second half so he best not be wagging a finger at the defense when a measure of competence from him would have made victory a formality. Instead he’s missing wide open guys all over the place and checking from runs into passes at the wrong time.
Hopefully a wake up call — but we’ll see with the Saints coming with a formula that Buffalo proved can stomp the Bucs.

Ok so far this year offense have scored 411 points and D let up 297. That means O averages 31.6 points/gm but D let’s up 22.8 per game. That tells me the O is -23 points a game at kick off. The numbers don’t lie.

JimmyJack — here’s what the defense has done in the last month vs runners.
Buffalos RBs, 7 att, 64 yards, 9.1ypc
Falcons RBs, 21 att, 119 yards, 5.6ypc
Colts RBs, 17 att, 86 yards, 5.0ypc
Giants RBs, 10 att, 56 yards, 5.6ypc
Those are only RBs, not including the QBs. The best they’ve done is average 5.0 ypc vs the Colts, when they basically sold out to stop the run. That’s hardly impressive, and not indicative of a top defense. Hopefully the team can turn it back, I think they can be a good run defense, but this is not a great run defense, that is previous rep at work, nothing to do with the 2021 team.
If I’m wrong, if they can suddenly turn it on for the playoffs and be a top defense again, then fantastic, you can call me stupid for doubting them. But this isn’t just a month-long deal, teams, when they’ve chosen to run on the Bucs have been doing so. The reason they don’t choose to run against the Bucs is mainly due to COCKwell and gain in the secondary, it’s just too easy to pass to worry about the run, unless you’re the Redskins and just want to run out the clock, so you just run up the gut for 3.3 yards per play until the game is over.

If it was only one play, then sure, but this is a month long trend at this point.

Okay I have to say this, Tom Brady gets much praise for his abilities and his command of a team and deservedly so but that comment “Brady brought you a ring” is only half true. You see Brady came to the Buccaneers because with his HOF eyes he knew that they were a seriously talented team. He loved the speed of the team, that it had above average hands and its physicality. So in reality it was the TEAM that won the ring not just Brady.

That hasn’t been a season-long issue Rod. Bucs have held 7 teams to under 100 yds rushing (ironically we lost 2 of those … Rams & Washington). What does concern me is that in these last 3 games (all wins), opponents have all rushed for over 100 yds but their run-pass ratios have been quite low. Colts only ran it 20 times for 107 yds (30% run-pass); Falcons ran it 23 times for 121 yds (33% run-pass); Bills ran it 19 times for 173 yds (25% run-pass). It’s almost like opponents are now using the pass to set up the run instead of vice-versa.

Rod Munch im not worried about stats. Im talking about game plan………Youre talking about the Giants running on us 10 times. 10!! That basically tells me they werent trying to beat us by running the ball……And they probably wouldnt of been able to either.
The Colts werent trying to beat us with the run either. Their running game did very little til they caught us in shell defense late in the fourth. That was one drive.
The Atlanta game might be worth a discussion because their run dominated us for their opening score……But for no good reason they got away from running the ball like the losers they are.
Sounds to me like your having an argument with yourself about elite run defense. I dont think anybody said they were elite but thats what you seem to be arguing about. Very bizarre.

Because those teams simply have decided not to rush the ball, that’s my point, when they do rush the ball, they have great success. Sooner or later teams will figure out that the ‘elite run defense’ doesn’t actually exist, and when they do, they’ll be putting up 130 yards a week, like a bad rushing team, the Falcons, just did a couple of weeks ago.
The Bucs HAVE to get that fixed for the playoffs — and I think it’s as simple as ton thing, make sure White is running forward on every play and stop dropping him into coverage. White, when he’s rushing the passer, also clogs up the run game, at least up the middle, in addition to getting to the QB.
BUT, in fairness to Bowles, this pass defense has been so bad, mainly due to injuries, that they’ve been seemingly playing a lot more zone, and it has slowed down how badly they’ve been getting beat in the passing game. If/when we ever get the defense healthy, I’m hoping they can get on that hot streak, right as the playoffs are starting.

Also, yes, there are absolutely people here, and around the nation, that keep saying this is an elite rush defense. That was the case last year, but that is not the case this year.

Greg, not sure what they teach down south in school beyond spitting tobacco into a cup 101. Last I checked 297 total points allowed ÷13 games=22.86 points or 23 points per game.(That’s called rounding up). So go back and count how many teeth you have left in you mouth and try to figure this equation out again.
